Windows: Instantiate of "New Sonic Arts" "Freestyle" VST failed

Renoise Forum - May 28, 2022 - 23:37

Got this issue now with a VST2 Plugin called New Sonic Arts Freestyle. It was working before. And it’s working, when i’m rename the plugin dll to something else. Its called “Freestyle.dll” by default, change it to “Freestyle2.dll” let Renoise load it without errors. Pretty strange.
The plugin works fine with the default filename in FLStudio, so it seems to be a conflict with Renoise 3.4.2 somehow.

Error is pretty simple, but no crash logs which would help here more.

VstPlugs: Trying to instantiate D:\VST\Instruments\New Sonic Arts\Freestyle.dll
VstPlugs: Instantiate FAILED (caught structured exception) !!!

I’m not sure, what i can do here. Reinstall doesn’t work.
OS is Windows 11.

Redux not remembering settings

Renoise Forum - May 28, 2022 - 12:54

This is on Windows 10. Reaper 6.58.

It seems that on my install the settings file isoveridden on exiting the DAW for some reason.

When I change a setting, e.g. the scaling I can see it changing on Config.xml, e.g.

<UIScaleFactor>150%</UIScaleFactor>

Then I leave the code editor open and close Reaper and it becomes this:

<UIScaleFactor>Auto</UIScaleFactor>

Notice that if I only disable and then enable the plugin it is fine. It only happens on exiting Reaper (when unloading the DLL I guess).

It happens with every setting. I can only use defaults. What to look for? Is this a bug or something with my install?

Technoburlesque: Image Snatchers 3 by The Feminalz

Renoise Forum - May 27, 2022 - 16:20

After first and second, here comes the third installment of tracks made for, and inspired by, this almost 10 years running feminist technoburlesque show.

I’m really proud of the reworks of first two “neuro-disco” cuts which are both reworks of disco traks from 70s and early 80s.

Everything done in Renoise (and bits of Ardour) on Linux + mastering in a place running fully FLOSS signal chain.

Please enjoy and let me know if you’re interested in doing remixes or want to look into xrns files.

Overload protection kicks in while offline rendering

Renoise Forum - May 27, 2022 - 15:18

Hi, the overload protection also kicks in sometimes at the end of an offline rendering and IMO should be completely deactivated while rendering…? Maybe it kicks in too early, while plugins still switching rendering mode to realtime or something… I could provide an example song using Hive only, but maybe you cannot reproduce then.

Renoise3.4.2 sample recording latency

Renoise Forum - May 27, 2022 - 04:17

Renoise 3.4.2 There is a latency when recording a sample. It happens even if I adjust the latency in preferences. Is it possible to record the play no latency?

When adding VSTs only a fraction of the added VSTs show up. Plus other funky stuff

Renoise Forum - May 26, 2022 - 17:38

I got a couple of VSTs I wanna add.

#1 I open up Renoise.
#2 Hit Ctrl + “,” for Preferences.
#3 Go to “Plug/Misc”.

In other DAWs I just select multiple paths and that’s it.
But I read that Renoise support 2 paths because it supports 2 paths.

#4 So I created a “VST Plugin” folder where I copied all VSTs.
( C:\Program Files\Renoise 3.4.2\VST Plugins )

#5 I click “Browse” and set the path to:
C:\Program Files\Renoise 3.4.2\VST Plugins
I also tried out my desktop path:
C:\Users\C\Desktop\VST Plugins
I also tried out scanning my whole C:// drive.

#6 It scans and finds all the VSTs that I copied into the folder.
I can see this via the status task on the down-left corner.
But I can only use a fraction, like 1/10 of the plugins.

So far I tried clearing the cache, installing Renoise new,
checking of course if I have the newest version (Renoise 3.4.2 x64), different VST plugin paths, googling the problem, and searching on the forum here as well, I tried it with running the app in admin mode and without admin mode.
I tried every option in the “Plugin/Misc” tab in the VST Plugins window from: Checking and unchecking “Enable VST2 plugins:”, “Additional VST2 paths:”, “Enable VST3 plugins”, “Rescan previously failed plugins”, “Scan for new plugins on startup”, “Run all plugins in sandboxes (arrow to the right separate process)”.
Checkinr or unchecking those boxes led to the same result in the same amount of time and so on and so forth.

As for the plugins themselves:
I know they work in FL Studio and Cubase.

I’ll add a video pretty soon because I heard this helps the troubleshooting progress.

Edit:
#1 I also tried moving the .vsts directly into the VST Plugin folder so Renoise doesn’t have
to dig through folders of subfolders.
#2 By doing this I realized that by scanning plugins Renoise kinda randomly copies .vsts
to funny directories.

I found the Kia.vst in a FL Studio plugin folder. I didn’t put it there.
I found that ReDominator.vst was in 3 or 4 different spots at the same time.
But what if I wanna scan the plugin? Does Renoise duplicate the plugin so it can say:
Sorry, duplicate I don’t touch that.

I will post the video tomorrow.

New sidechain routing and additional frequency issues on chorus and flanger

Renoise Forum - May 26, 2022 - 14:46

Hi there ppl and first of all, Renoise development crew!

I got two things regading Renoise 3.4.1 version I just downloaded and working on it.

  1. In terms of sidechain, I remember when I could use this tool (Renoise up to 3.3.1), I was able to assign whatever parameter of an effect could be triggered by signal in a channel (for xmpl a kick drum), like I often used gainer effect and a gain was a parameter to use for a sidechained signal (for xmpl a bassline). Or, I could make some more sophisticated way like turning down low frequencies on EQ 10 effect, just to have sidechained signal still audible, but when kick enters, low freqs of bass was cut off. But, now on Renoise 3.4.1…I cannot do it. So the question is, could you please go back to that sidechain effect back again? Or maybe 2 different sidechains could be implemented at once in new version, just like EQ 5 and EQ 10? This would be perfect, as I have to go back to my previous Renoise version
  2. This is not as much changing the way effects works as previous point, but what I noticed when using Chorus or Flanger: when activating additional filter on the right part of it, 4 xmpl activating BP Moog, when moving frequency slide you can see a big amount of Hz up for 1/7 slide range fromt he left, then suddenly you see “Inf Hz” from this point up to maximum. In previous renoise versions that showed real frequency range. I think its just a bug, but does not affect sound at all.

Btw, any of you other noticed some bugs maybe? Let me know if there are some.

Thanks!

Instrument column randomizer

Renoise Forum - May 26, 2022 - 13:03

Hey, does anyone know of any way you can randomize the instrument column, preferably within a defined range? Similar to the randomize notes tool perhaps. I want to speed up my workflow for hocketing between different vsts. Thanks.

Audio Routing - change several busses at once

Renoise Forum - May 26, 2022 - 10:51

HI,

in the Plugin section of renoise ist there a chance to change multiple bus entries under Audio Routing at once? Or do I have to change every single entry? Example: Drumazon vst has 12 busses and I want to change them all to track 4 - how can I select all entries and set them to track 4? Or do I need to change every single entry one after another?

Workflow/GUI Related - LFO/ Effect distinction

Renoise Forum - May 26, 2022 - 08:27

I would welcome it if an Modulator looks a bit Different to an Effect.

That will make it easier at the first look in a Chain and it makes a easier brain-anchor, when u think that u want modulate something and know how it looks instantly…

  • it can be a colored border
  • it can be an different background tone color
  • it can named as Modulator

i like the second one

Show/Hide Pattern Matrix displaces cursor

Renoise Forum - May 24, 2022 - 12:26

There’s an issue where showing and then hiding the Pattern Matrix will move your cursor to a different track. It happens when you have enough tracks that you have to scroll horizontally to reach the rightmost ones.

This way I can reproduce it easily.

  • Create 16 tracks
  • Move to track 16 in the editor window
  • “Show” Pattern Matrix
  • “Hide” Pattern Matrix

On that final step my cursor is moved from track 16 to track 13, but this depends on the “width” of the different visual elements, so it’s just an example. All I did between these screenshots is hit Tab 2 times (which is my shortcut for this function).

I toggle in and out of my Pattern Matrix pretty much constantly in my workflow, and it has become quite a grating hiccup. It feels very unintuitive that toggling a visual element would move my actual navigational cursor. Hope it can be can be looked at, or that I’m missing something.

Thanks!

GranCrackle - Additional Clicks & Pops

Renoise Forum - May 24, 2022 - 01:55

Since I’m still in the process of begging for true granular functionality within Renoise, I continue to make small Doofers that will give SOME of the effects I hope to create from using Renoise’s sampler alone.

One such granular entity is a ‘crackling’ sound; small clicks and pops that would occur on a sustained (or any) sound if a granular effect device was set as a pass-through. A blended sound.

This Doofer can be placed either directly on an Instrument’s channel or as a Send Effect. It requires a sound to pass through it to have any sort of crackling happen. Thinking about it here - let’s say one would want the effect to be happening, but not heard - I do not know how to trigger the sound without another sound passing through it, as it requires sound to pass through the PDC Test Delay device. I’m using the Signal Follower device as a very light Attack/Release/Filter - not too sure how much it’s doing beyond adjusting the frequency ranges the PDC Test Delay can be heard.

In any case, here’s another Doofer that kinda/sorta gives me an effect that I’d want to create with a real Renoise-native granular device.

[Redux] Do not pack samples to the project file (VST Chunk) [Important]

Renoise Forum - May 22, 2022 - 18:31

It would be very convenient if there was a setting to disable the packaging of samples in the project file, to load them from disk.

Why?
  • Many DAWs use periodic project backups, and since samples in the uncompressed wav format are packed into VST Chunk, a project can weigh a lot if there are a lot of samples and Redux instances. And if such saves accumulate, the folder can very quickly begin to take up gigabytes. At the same time, the behavior as it is now is very convenient for transferring the project.
  • The same instruments can be used in multiple projects. On the one hand, the current behavior is convenient, since instruments and samples are unique in each project, and changing one does not change all the others, but on the other hand, sometimes the opposite behavior is needed. Firstly, it can drastically reduce the disk space occupied by the instrument (for example when you use several huge instruments), and secondly, it allows you to replace samples in all projects at once. This behavior requires knowledge of what you are doing, so the default settings should be left as the current behavior.
Searching for samples

I propose to implement two sample search strategies: an absolute folder path and a relative path. Moreover, these settings must be written to the system configuration, not in the project itself.
Then a person can allocate a global folder for storing tools

Topics for discussion
  1. What to store separately, and what, nevertheless, in the project? On the one hand, you can load the entire instrument from disk, with all the samples and settings, but then when you change the instrument in one project, it will change in the others, which is not obvious. On the other hand, you can store only samples as separate wav files, while the rest of the parameters take up little space and are successfully saved to the project. But in this case, you need to think over the convenient organization of samples and search in subfolders in order to prevent a huge number of samples from all instruments in one folder at once, as this is very inconvenient.
Behavior On saving
  • If the settings specify the packaging of samples in the project, the current behavior remains.
  • If the settings specify the loading of samples from the disk, the samples are copied to the specified folder, and a flag is added to the project that the samples must be searched on the disk.
On loading
  • If the project does not have a flag that samples must be searched on disk, the current behavior remains.
  • If the project has a flag that samples must be searched on disk, samples are searched (see Topics for discussion #1 and Searching for samples above) in a subfolder of the specified global folder. If the sample is not found, a window pops up asking you to specify the path to this sample. After specifying the path, the sample is copied to the search folder.
Conclusion

This is a very important request, the absence of this feature prevents us from using Redux as a sampler because our projects (especially the backup folder) start to weigh gigabytes. We have to use less convenient solutions that take samples directly from the disk. At the same time, the current behavior is very convenient for security and portability, so it should be left as the default behavior.
I really hope that this proposal will find a response and will be implemented.
