Preview Saved Songs on Welcome To Renoise GUI popup

Renoise Forum - January 8, 2023 - 18:34

There should be a way to hear a preview of the songs on the GUI list that pops up when you open Renoise; maybe with a play button or when you click it there’s a short preview much like how it’s done in the file loader.

Keep patterns for later / hide section / any tip

Renoise Forum - January 6, 2023 - 05:11

Hi !

As I explained in my introduction topic, I got Renoise less than a week ago and completely felt in love with it.
Actually, the only thing I miss, is my sleep now that I spend my nights making sounds.

In my first track that is pretty advanced, I’m starting to find some flaws in the way I organized my patterns, since I decided to start without even looking at what was possible and go with the flow.
Now, it’s time to find my ideal workflow for my next tracks, or at least the first iteration.

All that to say, that one of my main concern is that I have a tendency at keeping lots of patterns “in memory”, not being actual part of my song.
I just started using sections in the sequencer view, which is a good start making a big separation between the start of my track and my drafts.

For example, when chopping beat, I like to keep a pattern of the original chopped-to-tempo sample on the grid, without any of my modification. I also sometimes have ideas while working on a complete different part of my song that I need to draft, and keep away while I finish what I was doing.

I tried searching the forum and either found weird solutions, nothing or old things that may not be up to date since Renoise seems to have evolved a lot, but here is my question:

I would like to know if there was a way to maybe:

  • save some samples (like instruments) somewhere else than in the sequencer view and just get them when we want
  • if not, maybe we could “collapse” a section to hide its content ? that way I could hide my drafts while working on my track and open it when needed
  • Saving to file could be nice, but a bit messy if I have to save file, delete pattern, load file, …

Also, if you have any tip on how to handle such things that I didn’t think about, let me know, maybe I even completely missed a core feature there.

If there is anything that could do that, or even if the API can do it, I may be able to code a tool myself, but didn’t dig that much in the API specs or Lua yet.

EDIT: also pretty useful to save some complex automations instead of deleting them, in case we would need them later.

Dynamic Eq as a replace for Multiband Compressor

Renoise Forum - January 5, 2023 - 14:02

As probably everyone knows in order to setup a native Multiband compressor in Renoise (other than the instrument area) you need couple of sends which is not so intuitive in my opinion . So how about using dynamic eqs in a doofer as a replacement? Like 3 or more envelope followers setup by the right bp filters each triggering a specific eq band . This is how I do sometimes in Reason . I thought it might be working(properly) in Renoise too .

How do i reinstall alsa-base?

Renoise Forum - January 5, 2023 - 07:13

so a while back i uninstalled lmms in favor of wanting to try out renoise and i noticed the alsa and jack base and i thought they were plugins to to lmms that i forgot to unistall. there are still in my computer though they are no longer working as i auto removed them using the linux terminal (dumb idea). now i get a message every time i open up renoise saying that i highly recommend to use ALSA and JACK. I dont know how to reinstall them though. does anybody here know how? i use linux mint if that sort of information is needed.

External VST Surge: cannot automate some FXs parameters

Renoise Forum - January 5, 2023 - 04:36

Hi !
When using the free VST Surge, I found something that looks like a bug, maybe someone here can help me if not

Steps to reproduce:

  • Load the VST
  • add Reverb as an FX (on the right)

It isn’t possible to automate Width or Mix parameters with an “Instrument Automation”, the only FXs found by Instrument Automation are FX A1 Type and Parameter (1-12), however looking at the help section it seems that it should be named FX A1 Mix.
Same thing happens for effects on the send track.

If this is not a bug and I’m not doing the right thing, I’ll love to get some help, otherwise, if you have any clue if the issue could come from Renoise or Surge, let me know!

Thanks

How to pass keypresses through?

Renoise Forum - January 4, 2023 - 21:36

Apologies if this has been covered before.

I’d like to add some code to ZynZilla to allow it to pass keypresses through, so that every gui update doesn’t require a click on the waveform to hear the result. I imagine this is fairly simple to do, I just haven’t a clue how to do it.

Any coding wizards want to help?

New to Renoise : First Song

Renoise Forum - January 3, 2023 - 20:51

Hello forum.

Just purchased Renoise and made song #1.

After trying the demo a few times and feeling befuddled, I decided to enter the Renoise universe.

Enjoy the simplicity and minimalism of the application.

Rock On!

Can't find advanced pattern editor operations to assign shortcut

Renoise Forum - January 3, 2023 - 08:16

I can’t find it for the life of me in the assign shortcuts section in preferences. It’s driving me kinda bonkers that you can assign show/hide short cuts for every little thing EXCEPT this panel. Please tell me it’s just hidden somewhere other than where it should be in the global>view section, because I’ve been looking for it for an hour now haha. Thanks!

Renoise seems to be what I was always looking for, without knowing

Renoise Forum - January 3, 2023 - 05:01

Hey all ! sorry for this kind of “listen to my life” post, but I’ve been reading Renoise forums for a few days now and it brought back some memories from my younger days.

I didn’t find an Introduction section or topic so this post will also contain some context about me.

First of all, even though I speak about my younger days, I’m only 26, but started music production when I was around 12, spending most of my times between my DAW (ableton live / logic at the time) and some french forums about music production.
I mostly produce electronic music, but I explored different kind of sounds over that time, mostly club-oriented: electro-trash, fidget-house, house, hip-hop, techno, rave, trance, breakbeat, drum n bass, minimal… I may forgot some. (I had different alias depending on the period, maybe some soundcloud/beatport/itunes links are still out there)

Growing up, I became a Software Engineer and, spending already a lot of time on my computer for work, stopped music production slowly.

Every now and then, I felt like I had to start again and tried, but it didn’t last long for different reasons: with all that time without producing anything, I lost my habits and I feel my level is a bit lower than it used to on some points, and have to re-learn basic features of my DAWs.

My last attempt at getting back at music production was focused on breaks music with techno sonorities and a touch of idm, but was a failed attempt because I felt pretty limited with drum programming. Actually not limited, but it took ages and what not that enjoyable.

A few days ago, I bought a new laptop and decided it could be time to start doing some music production again. For the reasons above, I wanted to try out Renoise, mostly to make my drum programming process more enjoyable since this is one of my favorite parts of the electronic music I listen to and can add a lot. The first few hours, I understood nothing and could barely place a note on the grid, when reading the forum, I understood nothing about vocabulary. I almost gave up, but decided to watch the beginner tutorial series of the youtube channel, which are amazing!

When I finally felt I grasped the feel of Renoise, I realized that this workflow what was I was always looking for, but without knowing it: with classic DAWs, I was stuck in some kind of “way to do”, really really conventional, even though it’s been years I’ve been looking to leave this aspect of my music to go to a more rough and natural form art, putting some of the “codes” in the trash.
With renoise, I finally feel that I can focus on what I like the most, and make what I used to find boring in my production process enjoyable, so I bought it after 1 day of experimentations, and it’s been 2 days I’ve been working on different ideas.

I now have a pretty advanced track ongoing, and hope that Renoise will also help me finish tracks, since I was always bored with adding details, but I feel it will be different now !

Also, it happens often in my life that I focus a lot on something I like for a few weeks and then leave it forever. It happens a lot with music production, so we’ll see if Renoise will finally make me stick to it again, and meet back with my passion…

Sorry for that long message, you can take it both as some love toward renoise, and my introduction post to this beautiful community.
