Ableton Link transport sync problem
When attempting to Link Renoise and Pro Tools over the local network the link is recognized by both but the Renoise transport doesn’t engage when I engage the Pro Tools transport. If I engage the Renoise transport first the expected Link induced countoff happens but Pro Tools doesn’t budge.
I tried Renoise on a third computer in the network as a test and got the same result.
Investigating further, I opened Bitwig on one of the machines. Two Links appear in each of the three DAWs and Bitwig and Pro Tools engage with each other as expected, transports synced, but Renoise does not engage.
I feel like I’m probably missing a simple setting in Renoise? Any help is greatly appreciated!

macOS: Reason Rack Plugin interface unresponsive without Enable Keyboard
Hi,
Did anyone have this issue and find solution for this? RR plugin interface is not clickable with Enable Keyboard unchecked. Otherwise keyboard notes input doesn’t work.
This turns out to be quite annoying being unable use my computer keyboard and tweak Reason devices’ knobs simultaneously. Using macOS.
I’m trying to avoid using any additional midi gear/keyboards.
Cheers

FX Chain Stepper from LFO
Tonight I will bring you an effects device chain meta modulation stepper patch, working with the custom graphical LFO points! It was a real fun little hack to do, and I think some people here might be happy about it, because I have seen such a feature requested now and then!
It works quite well to my understanding so far. Just when you trigger multiple notes at the same time, it will only advance one step…unlike the modulation stepper it only works monophonic. Also when the song speed and tickrate are very low, for each note played there can be a short delay until it will register a new note and step on.
How to use it?
To work with it, drag & drop the preset file into an effect chain, or right click the effect chain and select “Device Chain”->“Load…” and select the “fxstepper.xrnt” file. Take care, loading the preset will overwrite any existing FX chain in that track, so if you do not want to replace, you might want to create a new track/device chain for it, load the patch into it, and then you can drag&drop the devices around to where it suits you.
Then when you got it ready, the first thing you might want to do is to choose an instrument/sample for the “Velocity Tracker” device. This instrument/sample will trigger the stepper on every note played.
The next thing you might want to do, is to edit some values in the code field of the “Step Formula” device. The following values can be edited to have effect on the action:
- “ntaps” should exactly match the number of points of the “Step Table” LFO device for the hack to work properly. (Due to a bug max 256 values)
- “step” is the number of steps skipped in the table for each note played. It can be a positive value, or a negative value. It can even be a fractional value, for example “0.5” will skip a line every 2 notes. If you set it to zero “0”, the stepper will choose a random point for each note played.
- “start” will set the starting point that the stepper selects when it is loaded and when a reset is triggered. It can be a fractional number as well.
The next thing you might want to do is edit the LFO “Step Table”. As said, it should be set to have the same number of points as selected in the formula device. Then you can just enter the data points, and you can also use the “Ext. Editor” functionality in all it’s glory to fine tune your data points.
Then you will want to set up the “Mod Targets” Hydra device, linking it to the effect parameters that you want the stepper to modulate.
Lastly, the “Step Formula” device has a first parameter called “RESET”. This will automatically return to zero when you change it. However whenever you set it to a nonzero value somehow, for example by moving it, or by right clicking it to write a value to the pattern FX column or to point automation, at that point the Stepper will reset to the position declared with the “start” parameter, so you can sequence repetitive modulations.
So that is all about it so far I think. I hope you people have some fun with it. If you find anything quirky about it, have ideas on how to improve, want to give some feedback etc, feel free to write here, I can try to fix it.
But please keep in mind that it is a pretty freaky hack, and not everything will be possible to fix for me. Shouts out to @slujr for suggesting this hack to be done.
Download the patch:
(EDIT: V1.1 makes start wrap around so you can use negative numbers to count from the right side)

New tool: Chord progression tool
Here is a tool to generate chord progressions out of some random chords.
It is a way to kick-start a new track when out of ideas. Or… That was the idea when creating it
Renoise is a digital audio workstation. It lets you compose, edit and record production-quality audio using a music tracker-based approach. It features a wide range of built-in audio processors, alongside support for all commonly used virtual...
Since it’s my first tool, and also my first encounter with LUA, it probably has more bugs than lines of code. It do work on my computer though, of course.
It writes to the current pattern. Screenshot of gui below:
More info on the tool page.

Stepper-like behavior with meta devices in FX chains?
Hey all, looking for an assist here…
I’d like to be able to emulate the stepper modulation device’s behavior in the instrument or track fx section using currently available native meta devices. I’ve been able to achieve some stepwise motion using a couple of different approaches…
First, using an odd combo of a key tracker, hydra, and lfo and some destination splitting and feedback, but the movement was not regular, and the desired looping behavior wasn’t achieved. I also used a signal follower and a very short trigger sound tied to lfo frequency to step through a series of values. Satisfactory movement, with some fiddling, but same issue with a lack of cyclical movement.
I’m a dunce when it comes to the formula device, but I wonder if there is some way to utilize this (or some other combination of meta devices) to replicate the utility of the stepper device in fx chains.
Love to hear your ingenious solutions if you’ve got em!
eternal gratitude if so!

A Signal-following Stereo Doofer
Similar to the iZotope Ozone Imager. This rudimentary Doofer allows for the stereo signal to be triggered at or above 5kHz (or other frequency ranges) with further adjustment of the the “HP Freq” knob. Dest Min/Max adjust for how much of the signal affects the Sensitivity. The lower the Sensitivity, the more ‘touchy’ the effect is, which really allows for an active stereo expansion. The initial setting is a nice upper-mid mastering setting - a lively, moving stereo spreader without affecting the low-end. Keeps panning activity exciting, yet less of an ‘on/off jarring’ feel.

OSC Doesn't Accept BPM Values Below 32
As the title says, this should go down to 20 now and the explanation in the Preferences menu would need to be updated too.

Recorded audio is not syncing
Halo World, I need your advise… AFter I sequence the midi in RENOISE, I record the audio but for some strange reason, after a few bars, it goes out of sync.
I read when recording audio, to take out the audio plugin delay(turn it off).

MacOS (Big Sur): cabinet simulator broken in R3.4
both with loading old Renoise files, or inserting new instances the cabinet simulator sounds completely off in R3.4, like a heavily downsampled aliased mess. tried different sample rates. M1 macOS 11.6.4

Renoise on Pi (resource usage)
Hi all,
i’m thinking of getting Pi (model 4 - or other) soon - to be able to use it solely with Renoise. Can anyone, who owns any models, make a comparison of projects:
- Open project on PC/laptop (mac/win/linux) - document resource usage
- Open same project on Pi (the more models - the better) with same parameters(latency, sample rate, etc) document resource usage
video would be perfect - or screenshots of resource-intensive parts, and short summary in general. Since we got support for ARM in the latest update ► Renoise 3.4.0 & Redux 1.3.0 released it would be great to have general overview of how Renoise behaves.
any additional information is very welcome (which audio interfaces & midi instruments are working, any major flaws of this approach etc)
Thanks!

Notch on new Macbooks obscures some gui elements
When in full screen, the notch obscures whatever goes in the middle of the upper part of the gui - in my case it’s octave setting. Would be great if Renoise could be notch-aware and move items to the sides, or even if a simple checkbox to avoid that area be available.

[Tool Idea] Migration between AU VST2 AND VST3
So because this whole world of M1 native problems, some plugins behaving better via au native bridge process some better via renoise sandbox, plus discontinuity of VST2 plugins, it would be nice to have migration tool between those plugins formats AU VST2 and VST3 [and any other for other systems].I’m aware that some formats raport different parameters sometimes, but still i think it would be usefull migration tool. Maybe there is ? but i didnt find one.
How i imagine it would work.
Well you would
- select source device from available in project
- you would select targeted format
- plugin compare all plugins parameters name by name and map one parameter to target parameter if same name
- if some parameters cant be mapped automatically, show list of those parameters in left column, and on right select with all parameters of targeted format, and “skip this” option
Click migrate and it converts, or create copy of this instrument/device, so you can test manually test if migration was done how it should.

MacOS (Big Sur): when Output Thermal is bridged, gui doesn't show up
As in title, when Output Thermal is bridged, gui doesn’t show up, its white/blank
- It was working in 3.3,
- it is working if starting Renoise as Rosetta2 mode in 3.4
- it is showing when using AU version

Numerous Native Instruments Plugins No Longer Work with Latest 3.4 Osx ARM
I’m on an Apple MacBook Pro M1 Max and after launching the latest 3.4 Renoise and opening one of my tracks I was greeted with an error: “The following plugins could not be found or failed to open: AU: Native Instruments: FM8”
I loaded the 3.3.2 version of Renoise to double check if the plugin was at fault and loading the same track was fine. Loading version 3.4 again and the same track had the error mentioned.
On a clean new song the following plugins are loading but with no audio:
Absynth 5, FM8, Super8
The following plugins DO work:
Battery 4, Kontakt, Massive X
Massive (standard not X) plays but changing any knobs in the plugin GUI while playing causes a massive audio pop.
Maybe this is a known set of incompatibilities at their end but seeing as the plugins all worked fine on the previous release before the official ARM version I’m also letting you know here.
