SDCompo archive available?
Does anyone know if the SDCompo archive of submitted files is still available? Currently http://www.sdcompo.com/ redirects to a storage unit ad.

How to set up Pipewire for Renoise on Linux?
I have recently switched over to Linux and I am having a bit of trouble setting everything up.
When I open up Renoise I get this error “Failed to create a RealTime priority thread for ALSA. Will create a non RT thread instead…”
I know I need to set up either JACK or Pipewire but I’m not sure how to do this or. I’ve heard good things about Pipewire so I’m wondering if anyone here has any experience with it and can help me out with it.
Thanks in advance!

FM synthesis on Renoise? Maybe!
I stumbled upon this concept by accident, even if you don’t get a complete and versatile FM it’s interesting to experiment with.
There are obvious limitations but perhaps it is just a matter of concept and technique.
Instead of using the traditional LFO as a modulator, I used an envelope with time synchronization and a very short loop of 20 milliseconds that correspond to 50 Hz.
You can modify loop size from 1 millisecond (equivalent to 1 KHz, absolutely insane!) to more than 16 seconds.
There are many improvements to be made and parameters with which to experiment, envelope shape and pitch range are the two most obvious.
FM.xrni (9.5 KB)
I hope it will be stimulating and fun

Slightly Odd behaviour when importing a midi file to empty song
1- Have a blank song
2- drag in a short midi file
3- Pattern 0 becomes pattern 1
4- press clone pattern in sequencer, you get pattern 0 back again with a pattern 1 following
Expected behaviour would be pattern 0 is retained at step 3?
Also if you start with 2 empty patterns, you end up with this in the sequencer:
Test midi file:
simple.mid (88 Bytes)

Midtempo Attempt
Hey yall! sorry I’ve been gone from the forums for such a long time!
As of late, I feel like I’ve been getting better at this whole music thing and I wanted to show off something I made today that I’m really proud of
This is the first time I’ve used Serum and i feel like it came out okay~
i do feel like it does need a tiny bit of fixing, and there’s always room for improvement, but as of now I’m proud of this piece!
Go ahead and leave comments/criticisms! all are welcome!

Tracks I use for inspiration
Because I’m always asking for granular resources and yakkin’ about Max/MSP and glitch/abstract music, there’s a set of videos of a sequencer I purchased in the past called 2020 Semi-Modular Beat Machine. It’s constructed in Max/MSP and is generative in nature. This is what I like to reference for sound on occasion. The videos by “Hirota i” are the ones I find the most compelling. They’re pretty much sine-wave based, with a small amount of FM thrown in.
This is the full list: 2020 - YouTube
Renoise can do MOST of what this software does, and better. It’s pretty neat, though, and a great way to experience stuff many most likely haven’t heard before.
And an example of how Renoise pretty much nails it!

How do I import midi files without adding a new "midi instr.", keeping the old vst instrument?
Yes? I tried loading with options and de-selecting create instr.midi, etc, but no luck?
I have the need to go trough many midi files, chord progressions, to be exact.

Syncing External Hardware Sequencer with Renoise
Hello! I have a beatstep pro that I am trying to sync my sequencer up into renoise. My steps are…
I create the desired 16 step beat sequence on my beatstep pro on MIDI channel 10.
I set my LPB to 4 lines and go to edit mode and press play on the beatstep.
I notice renoise isn’t recording the midi at the right times. There seems to be a delay or catch up moment where all of a sudden the midi notes that were suppose to be playing 10 lines ago are all of a sudden on a single line.
When the sequence is playing I notice when I press in on my pads nothing is recording however when I turn off the sequence on the beatstep I can add in notes live no issue whatsoever. I figure the midi should be the same as if I was playing live on the pads.
I have tried with and without syncing the beatstep pro as the main clock.
I have tried uses 0 and 1 as step length.
Is there something obvious I’m missing?
edit: This seems to be the case anytime renoise is Playing the track and I try to add midi while it’s playing live or not.
solution: Today I learned what quantization does. Thanks manual! I must have turned it up by mistake. I’m loving renoise so much

New Tool (3.3): Song Preview Sample
This started as an idea just to add a custom sample to a song that can be used as a preview when you are browsing your .xrns in the renoise browser. It turns out to be handy as a song revision record too when you use it to save multiple preview samples:
New alpha: Song Preview Sample
ledger.scripts.SongPreviewSample_V0.5.xrnx
Workflow:
-
Render a pattern or part of a pattern that you would like as your preview sample (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R)
-
Use instrument box menu to Set Selected As #Song Preview Sample on that render. It gets added to an instrument named #Song Preview [X] .
(shortcut of same as manu available too) -
Continue working on your song, then get a reminder after [X] saves, that you should update your preview sample. Repeat 1) and 2)
-
NOTE: Make sure you re-save again after setting the sample if you are planning to close renoise as the reminder comes after the save action.
-
NOTE 2: If you use renoise’s ‘Delete Unused Instruments’ you will lose the preview instrument, so recommended to do deletions manually with the help of this tool.
////
Preview sample:
Instrument that gets created:
////
Preferences:
Tools menu: Ledger`s Scripts:Song Preview Sample
You can set:
-U.S. date notation in sample naming - M/D/Y instead of D/M/Y
-An additional timestamp for the samples contained in the #Song Preview [X] instrument
-Reminder frequency: The default is 5, set to zero to disable reminders/ tool.
////
Update reminder:
This is what pops up after [X] saves. You can access the preferences from here too.
////
Instrument Example:
Samples are named in format [DATE] : [TIMESTAMP] : [XRNS NAME]
Example with timestamp disabled here. You can see the song name updating as you look up the list. The samples are also mapped from C-4 for most recent, down the white keys for easy previewing

Spooky Toybox Fun
Some slightly spoopy stuff for this halloween. Bits of synth, samples, loops and good ol’ violin. Nothing too crazy, but I hope you’ll like it anyway.
Fun fact, Soundcloud suggests this is should be Jazz. What on earth are they smoking!?

•••ReGranulizer••• Granular synthesis xrni
Hi all,
As a result of discussion in this thread, I’ve made a pretty functional granular synthesis instrument in renoise using phrases and the sxx command to trigger sample slices. It has some quirks and limitations, certainly, but is a good start toward native granular synthesis in renoise. Check it out here:
ReGranulizer v1.xrni (1.0 MB)
Read the comments when it opens, drop in a sample, and experiment!
Happy to answer any questions in this thread if anyone has any.
peace

Smallest keyboard I can get away with without any problems?
I am currently using a 60% keyboard without arrow keys which is very frustrating so I am going to upgrade. However I am unsure whether to get a full size keyboard or whether I can get away without having certain keys. At the minute I’m just thinking about arrow keys but I’m wondering whether I can benefit from having a numpad and function keys. I’m pretty new to renoise so I am not aware of every keyboard shortcut. I don’t want to regret not getting a full size keyboard later down the road. Any advice?
