ReFX - What happened
@rockfistus wrote:
I noticed a lot of ReFX plugins are just straight up not available anymore. I use PlasticZ still and it’s literally the ultimate synth bass plugin, I couldn’t imagine my Renoise life without it. I liked a lot of their plugins actually but I’m backing up my copies of PlasticZ for sure!

Bug: can't set edit/play pos to last line in song
@beublo wrote:
I get a std::logic_error: 'invalid edit pos. valid values -> (1 - song_end)' when I try to set the position programmatically.
Initially I was using the _beats variant and thought it may be due to some rounding error, but even when settings sequence/line directly, this error occurs.
To reproduce, create a new song and enter in the terminal renoise.song().transport.edit_pos = renoise.SongPos(1, 64).

How far can renoise compete with Komplete?
@Tumulte wrote:
Now we have stretching I really wonder… how useable can renoise be as a ROMpler virtual instrument platform ?
I mean, it has most of the features… scripting…
But my knowledge is limited : could renoise be used to build good/realistic virtual instruments ?
What’s missing if it couldn’t ?
Thanks

Automation over multiple patterns
@Sparky wrote:
I noticed a few posts about automation envelopes over multiple patterns back in 2011 - has this been implemented - am I missing something?
If not, I would have thought the easiest way to implement it would be to change the “horizontal zoom” of the current pattern - that would allow let’s say 4 patterns in total to be automated over.

Contellations (new-age)
@Fabrice wrote:
Hi there! Here is track composed in new-age genre, quite inspired by Kitaro’s style.
The flute part is played by me on native bass flute, but a bit re-sliced/processed in Renoise.

Sending Midi to Bitwig on macOS?
@helltrack wrote:
I’m trying to send midi from Renoise to Bitwig on macOS. I’ve set up a IAC Midi device, which I have selected as the midi output in Renoise on a track, but the damn midi notes won’t register in Bitwig for some reason. I’m using the HW Instrument device (with the same Midi Device selected) followed by a VST. Obviously I must be doing something wrong.
Welp

Bluetooth headphones and Renoise, any good solution?
@TheBellows wrote:
I wanted to use my bluetooth headphones with Renoise, so i bought a USB bluetooth adapter i thought should solve my problem, but this just acts like a separate soundcard which doesn’t work at all with Renoise. It just hangs and i got maybe 3 seconds of audio in slow motion after 5 attempts, so that doesn’t really do it for me.
I looked at some other options that you could connect to aux input of a car radio to play songs from your mobile, but i’m just not sure i have found one that actually works with the headphones output that can send audio to my bluetooth headphones.
Can any of you recommend a device that saves my day?

Font Bug at Normal size 100% scaling
@triple_zero wrote:
So making things look good for people with a HiDPI monitor is real nice and all, but I don’t think it should degrade the visual quality for users at the default settings of “normal size” font and 100% scaling.
I uploaded these side by side screenshots to demonstrate. The left one is “normal size” at 100% scaling, and the right one is at 150% scaling (which is unusable for me because I don’t have a HiDPI monitor).
You can clearly see that the dot in the zero is off-centre at 100% but it’s perfectly fine at 150%. And there are a LOT of zeroes in a normal Renoise pattern, they all look off, and it makes the graphics designer in me very sad. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Now I read in another thread that you can change a config file and revert back to the old font. I’m going to do that because I really can’t work like this. Imagine the reverse if you like, you’re a musician, trying to do some graphics design, and the radio that is playing music in the background keeps skipping beats, messing the tempo and glitching out.
I think that selecting the old font should be an option in the settings screen, because right now it’s kind of hard to find. I’m lucky I even noticed the post saying it was possible!
However I’m also filing this as a bug report because while I can fix the problem on my side, clearly this font is not meant to be rendered at this size, or maybe the renderer is like, really bad at hinting. I’m not sure what went wrong, but fonts shouldn’t look like this, not for a program that you use multiple hours a day.
People have said before they don’t “like” the font, but I thought it should be useful to point out not the matter of taste, but what is actually wrong with it, so that it can be fixed.

What do 3.3 really needs…
@Tumulte wrote:
Oh… it sounds like a troll topic that will go into a flame war, doesn’t it ?
Well it isn’t. Because I really asked myself this question : what would a 3.3 really be about… because 3.2 is actually a pretty damn GREAT update that solves most major problems that were left.
VST 3 ? I very much encourage you to read the “Please add VST3 support” thread. TL;DR : it wouldn’t improve anything, and there’s no plugin that is VST3 only.
Piano Roll ? I’ve written a topic about how hard it is to break a fundamental design choice (renoise being a tracker) and it wouldn’t bring anything to the table. Let it be a tool.
So what else really ?
Multi-tracking. When you think about it, this is the ONE thing that prevents renoise from being a complete DAW. You can do everything and beyond with renoise… but if you have 3 mikes, you got to buy another software
Better Duplex integration : to me, this is the second thing that makes renoise stand out in the wrong way, the hardware/software integration is rather frustrating. We can’t hope for a push/Ableton live experience, nor we can expect big manufacturer to notice the small Renoise… but duplex kinda feel like a half baked cake. It’s almost amazing but very limited. Same goes with custom tools… user maintained tools often go abandonware.
Better midi automation : the automation is limited to 2 per track… which is… limiting.
MPE : this is niche, for sure. It almost didn’t make the list. But renoise capabilities with a 5d controller… this could be nuts
I’d like to hear you favorite feature requests but i’d like you to not rush on your keyboard but rather think for a while about :
- does it go with the general design philosophy of Renoise ?
- is there a quick and easy workaround ?
- would it really improve the overall experience of using Renoise ?
May this thread but full of great ideas and devoid of noise and unpleasantness
