Having different theme per song, is it possible?
i tend to hear music as colours and so would like to have Renoise themed per song.
launching a .xrnc file loads Renoise with the specified theme, but i haven’t managed to load a specific theme & song at the same time. I’m using linux, and have tried:
- xdg-open & gvfs-open: only accept a single argument to it’s theme OR song
- geo open: allows multiple arguments, but opens two instances of Renoise.
is it possible at all? I’m relatively new to Renoise, and happy to be pointed to “learn to script it”.
many thanks.

Natural (and cheap) "Human-Machine" interface
Multiband Send: the best usage (with no doubt)
[PROFESSIONAL TECHNIQUE] With Multiband Send tool you can split audio signal into 3 bands. Bearing this in mind create 3 Send tracks (target busses): MONO, STEREO, SURROUND. On the MONO Track add Stereo Expander effect and set it to Mono (Expand Slider set max to the left), On the SURROUND Track also add Stereo Expander effect and add a little values to the right (expand the stereo field to around 33.334 and add a little surround, something like 2.750)… From your instrument track use Multiband Send tool as the last one in the effects chain, as shown on the image. This is dope method to keep low frequencies strictly in mono, while higher can be more expanded in the stereo panorama field. This prevents phase issues and gives true mono compatibility for the mixes (and yet on the mixing stage!).

Effects doing nothing
Hi. I’m puzzled by the way effects are working in a song. I added a filter to a track. It didn’t seem to do anything. I added a distortion effect to another track. Nothing. I added it to a different track that used a different instrument. It worked.
So I started to experiment. I created a new track, entered some notes, and added the distortion effect. It didn’t work. Now I copied the distortion effect to another track, the one in which effects seemed to work. It worked.
So, now I have two tracks: let’s call them Track Weird and Track OK. I enter the same notes in both, with the same VST instrument. Track Weird has a distortion effect, but it does nothing. Track OK has a distortion effect that works.
Now, here’s the funny part: if I bypass the effect in Track Weird and mute Track OK, leaving the effect in Track OK enabled, Track Weird sounds as if the effect had been applied to it! I.e. I have this situation:
Track Weird, distortion effect bypassed
Track OK, muted, distortion effect enabled.
This results in the sound of the instrument being distorted.
But if I enable the effect in Track Weird and disable the effect in Track Ok, the effect is not applied.
I guess there’s something I don’t understand. I thought this was pretty straightforward: you have a track that produces sound. You place an effect in that track, and the output of that track is affected by the effect. But that’s not how it’s working. Sometimes the effect has no effect. And sometimes an effect in a different track does (because it’s the same instrument?).
This is Renoise 3.3.1.

Sequencer behaves incorrectly with Jack
On Linux (Fedora x86_64 in my case), when routing audio thru Jack, pattern sequencer do not schedule patterns with mouse click. What happens is that cursor jumps to the same row in selected pattern, as if you do right click. I also noticed that Play button blinks whenever I select a pattern, maybe it’s somehow related to the problem.

Phrase editor controls to pa
Hi. New guy here, with the first post and feature request: please add the phrase editor Vol/Pan/Dly/FX toggles with accompanying hexadecimal sliders to the pattern editor. As a new guy I’ll be coming to grips for some time with both the various commands and the hexadecimal system. It’s nice that each toggle has its own specific list of commands, and sliders help a LOT with the process of inputting values. And the whole time I can learn and get good enough to just know what to enter. Sound good or am I missing something? Thanks-

Aliases for plugins and phrases in Renoise rocks!
I’m really enjoying the possibility in Renoise to use AudioUnit/VST Aliases and Phrases for each individual Aliased Instrument. This works best for drums plugin: one instance of the plugin and separated (via aliasing) each drum sound into an individual instrument (+phrases separately for hi-hat, toms etc.). Never found such smart and efficient possibility to use instrument plugins in other DAWs.

Renoise, midi and older windows operating systems
Hi there, new to renoise. I have an old windows xp computer that I wish to use a tracker program with to communicate midi messages to external hardware devices. from what I can tell there is a few options for software trackers that support windows xp, some being legacy software options that I am curious about potentially learning and using for music making. I am wondering if renoise is a tracker that I should include in my list of tracker software to learn?
is there a version of renoise that was developed with compatibility for windows xp which included midi out so I can control external synths and hardware?

Note offs not working correctly in redux
Hello. Not sure if this is a beginner’s question or just a bug. But I’ve used Redux for a few days, and never Renoise (nor any other tracker) before, so I at least am a beginner.
My issue is that note offs don’t work correctly. I’ve had two issues:
- The first is that note ons on my bass drum (midi note 36) muted the decay of crash (midi note 49). They do not share a mute group (the crash is not in any mute group). This only happens when the kick note on is at the exact same moment as the crash’s note off. Played freely, the crash note off doesn’t to anything, since the sample is set to one-shot (as are all samples). NNA is Note off, but I would imagine that refers to the same note? Or is NNA = when a new note arrives exactly (the same tick) as a note off? Seems like a pretty useless function, but maybe it’s tracker specific. I’ve found the/a solution, I just wanted to figure out if I’m completely missing something. So far the help files and forum search haven’t helped (I did search and look around).
My other, bigger issue, is that note offs (or ons, it may not be related to the above) just don’t work properly.
Here are two sound samples of the same piece of a song.
The first is a live “bounce” from Reason and sounds correct.
In the second, which is a render, the drums during the first three chords sound correct, and after that a bunch of cymbal hits are missed. given the (probably too) distorted and compressed mix I can’t tell if the cymbal hits start at all.
The midi loop is the exact same throughout this part of the song. I’ve used Reaper’s drag-loop-function so the midi data should be identical every time.
Nothing else was changed between the render and bounce. The only difference is that I pressed play well into the song, rather than bounce it all. Souldn’t change things… No CCs are sent, just the same midi loop with note ons and velocity, nothing else. No phrases used, just notes from Reaper.
Correct, live bounce: http://noise.technology/audio/ok.mp3
Incorrect, render: http://noise.technology/audio/not_ok.mp3
The not off-layer is empty, basically I just want the GM note hits to play those samples until they’re done. No loops are used, just one-shots.
So far Redux is great for my needs (and I will explore glitchy stuff further on) but if I can’t trust it to simply play the samples the same way every time I’m not sure I’ll continue using it. The small modulations I use (velocity to pitch, or velocity to filter) shouldn’t make a sample not be played. There’s no random element anywhere.
My first issue is easily solvable, but weird, but this second one is just unreliable. It sounds right when I’m mixing and changing notes, only upon rendering will I find out if things came out correctly. That’s not really workable for me.
The issue could also be with Reaper’s midi handling, of course.
Any ideas?
Max
ps. Likely not needed but here’s an image of the loop in question.

Unclutter and improve track effect chain
I love simple things and improved workflow so here’s a simple suggestion for the track effect chain.
It will look like this as default without the effect list shown.
When you move the mouse over a spot where you can insert a FX a plus sign appear.
Click on the plus sign and the VST FX list box appear.
Search for your FX, the most probable/suggested will be highlighted while you type and you can just press enter to insert it.
Et voilà. You have your effect inserted just where you want it so you don’t have to drag it in place and we have removed a piece of clutter at the same time.
Maybe this is already possible with keyboard shortcuts but I’m not great at remembering the millions shortcuts the would make life easy unfortunately.

Problem with render
Sometimes after render I get file with silence and I must open Renoise again and mix whole song again.
But today I get even stranger thing - one channel was not render!
https://www.xtdmusic.eu/download/testrender.zip
test1.wav was what I get first time, test2.wav - after I re-opened Renoise.
Is possible to made better re-initialize everything before render? It’s absolutely unacceptable to work with that type of roulette.

Default Volume/Velocity Value
Default Volume/Velocity Value (in hex) should be 64 instead of (maxed out) 7F. It’s standard value 64 (100 in dec) in DAWs. No problem to create custom template with predefined values of course. But should be set to 64 as default globally.

[GUI PROBLEM] "Run all plugins in sandboxes" slows down the Renoise GUI
R3.2.2 or old, W10
In Renoise: Preferences / Plugin / Misc there is the following option:
- Run all plugins in sandboxes (-->separate process)
- If this option is activated, all plugins, both 32bit and 64bit will run in a separate window.
- If this option is disabled, only 32bit plugins will run in a separate window.
In either case, running a separate window (both AudioPluginServer32.exe and AudioPluginServer64.exe) causes a general slowdown in the Renoise GUI. That is, any 32bit or 64bit window run separately is going to negatively influence the graphics performance of the Renoise window. Why does this happen? Is it a direct Windows 10 problem or is the problem really internal to Renoise?
One very clear way of looking at it is to navigate through the Renoise top bar menus when Renoise are running any AudioPluginServer32.exe or AudioPluginServer64.exe (you must have the plugin window open). You will see that it works as if it were drunk. And furthermore, the problem is cumulative. If you open multiple plugin windows, the Renoise GUI will perform even worse, especially in the drop down menus…
I think this issue is one of the main current problems for Renoise, from that Renoise reached the first version with HiDPI compatibility.
Renoise Team, could you please resolve this matter?

What do you think , an ignore option for the pattern
So it will jump straight from the preceding pattern to the pattern after the ignored one

[PROBLEM] unordered list return of available_devices in track
R3.2.2 or old W10
There seems to be a small problem with the return of the two lists available_devices and available_device_infos for the tracks.
When starting Renoise the available_devices and available_device_infos properties can return the VST effects to the beginning of the list. But later these properties can return the VST effects to the end of the list, changing the order of the list.
It is desirable that they always return the same order of the list. I think the correct thing is that they always return the native effects and then the VST effects.
I cannot describe why this happens…
>>> rprint(renoise.song().selected_track.available_devices) [1] => Audio/Effects/VST/TAL-Vocoder [2] => Audio/Effects/Native/Delay [3] => Audio/Effects/Native/Multitap [4] => Audio/Effects/Native/mpReverb 2 [5] => Audio/Effects/Native/Reverb ... [42] => Audio/Effects/Native/*LFO [43] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Key Tracker [44] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Velocity Tracker [45] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Signal FollowerLater, in the same project session (look up and down the list)…
>>> rprint(renoise.song().selected_track.available_devices) [1] => Audio/Effects/Native/Delay [2] => Audio/Effects/Native/Multitap [3] => Audio/Effects/Native/mpReverb 2 [4] => Audio/Effects/Native/Reverb ... [41] => Audio/Effects/Native/*LFO [42] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Key Tracker [43] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Velocity Tracker [44] => Audio/Effects/Native/*Signal Follower [45] => Audio/Effects/VST/TAL-VocoderWhy does this happen? Can this be corrected?

Dirtywave m8 tracker
Anyone getting the dirtywave m8 tracker?
Looking slick imo, though a bit weird maybe with the button layout . Gas is definitely activated, though at the moment I can’t justify a 450,- dollar purchase, also knowing I have a hardly touched polyend tracker here that needs more love. If in the future the price can come down, perhaps with a cheaper Nerdseq portable as direct competition a better choice can be weighed.
Great to see these projects come to light!

I'm happy that old version disappears from the installed list
It’s a trivial matter, but there is something I really want to thank.
That is, the old version Renoise disappears in the Windows app list when the program is overwritten and installed with the new version.
With other programs such as Bitwig Studio, even if install by overwriting, the previous version remains in the list, so have to delete it from the registry ourself.
It’s a trivial matter, but thanks for the well-thought-out program Renoise I love forever.
I’m a Mac user since Mac Plus 1MB, but recently I’m enjoying 2in1 Windows 10 laptop. But my favorite is the Xfce environment of Linux.
