Is there a way to disable phrase selection via MIDI program change commands?
On my recent projects I’ve been making use of an old MIDI module that relies on program change commands to initialize and switch patches on MIDI channels. I do this via the M2 pattern command. For certain channels (which I’ve assigned to individual instruments), I like to create phrases when I need to do something that’s not feasible in the regular pattern mode, and switch to keymap mode and assign the phrases to notes that I know I won’t use for melodic purposes.
Now the problem. Since I use the M2 command at the start to initialize patches on every channel, this also causes the corresponding instruments that contain phrase data to switch to using that phrase (or the closest one to it) in program mode, which makes it affect every note. This is undesirable behavior, so does anyone know how to disable it?
In the case that it’s not possible, does anyone know an efficient workaround? Currently I’ve thought of two, but I can’t use them for one reason or another:
-
Place Z7F commands on every note I don’t want a phrase to activate on (way too time consuming)
-
Insert a series of system exclusive messages in the beginning of the song to disable program change message receiving on all necessary channels on the module, then place M2 7F commands after that (hypothetical, as Renoise doesn’t natively support sysex insertions and I don’t yet have a method of doing this in real time)

Looking for Musical Contests
Hello,
Are there cool websites to find cool musical contests?
I would prefer:
- free contests
- free choice of the daw
- free choice of the style
I don’t care about prices. My goal is just to find some cool contests to have fun. Something with stems or sample packs. And deadlines around 1 or 2 months. Does it exist?
Thanks.

Energy consumption on M1 MacBook
Hey guys. Using latest MacOS, M1 MacBook and latest Renoise versions.
In ‘Activity Monitor’ I noticed that even when only a blank Renoise project is opened and nothing is playing Renoise is still eating ~15 on energy impact (while also taking 300Mb memory and around 10% CPU). Is this an expected behavior? And if not, can I provide any details to help you resolve this thing?
This seems to drain the battery, slowly but steadily.

FR: Quick way to adjust volume and pan in instrument FX chain?
Not sure if this has been suggested before, but it would be very helpful to have a quick way to adjust volume and pan for each FX lane in the instrument FX. That is, without having to click on each lane and move the mouse down into the device lane.
For instance, using the mouse wheel on the little meter at the end of each FX chain would be an option for changing volume (and holding down a keyboard modifier while using the mouse wheel for pan)?

Keybindings.xml can not be viewed in Chrome
I can display Keybindings.xml in the old Internet Explorer only.
This file opens in Chrome via the menu Help… List keyboard shortcuts.
In Chrome and other web browsers based on Chromium, I get a security warning and no info on screen:
Unsafe attempt to load URL file:(User directory) AppData/Roaming/Renoise/V3.2.4/KeyBindings.xslt from frame with URL (User directory) /AppData/Roaming/Renoise/V3.2.4/KeyBindings.xml. ‘file:’ URLs are treated as unique security origins.

A couple of weird covers
I’ve been starting to enjoy reimagining a couple of songs, without just being a straight up cover. Here’s a couple below (who’d have thought Mariah Carey would end up sounding like a stalker?)

Merge songs or import a part of a song
Hi there,
Is it possible merge two songs (including instruments and VSTs) or import a part of a song (few patterns) into another one?
Thanks!

Redux Error when opening Ableton
Hello,
I’m relatively new to Redux – I’ve only been using it for a few months. After updating to Redux 1.2.2, I get this error message whenever I open an Ableton file that had an instance of Redux in it:
After hitting ok, the Redux instance is set to init and demo version – I deleted the demo version from my computer though. If I open a new instance of Redux, it shows the correct registration, etc.
I tried deleting the temp files referenced, and I tried restarting Ableton and my computer, but nothing seems to be solving the issue.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. It really sucks because I programmed out some (what I thought were) pretty cool and intricate breakbeats that now seem lost due to this error.
Thanks

Renoises Grand Grand Grand Father
Hehe. I just installed Protracker in my Amiga Emulator. Damn, I’ll never say anything bad about UIs today. I mean, I was quite good on Protracker in the early days but now I almost forgot everything. Lol.

Option for a Flat/Sharp Toggle?
Hey y’all! A new user to Renoise here, making the switch after 10 years of using 0cc-FamiTracker.
Is there any shot for adding a toggle for flats instead of sharps? For me, it makes a lot more sense reading music in flats instead of sharps and it kinda hinders my progress if things aren’t “correct” for me. Would love to see this option added if possible!
Another unrelated question considering that I’m a newbie to this program, but is there a way to reassign how the piano is laid out on my computer keyboard? I want to remove some keys in order to reassign keys such as the “=” and “]” keys. Thanks!

Wavetable vs. Granular (with one grain) - difference?
As the title says, I don’t really get the difference between wavetable synthesis and granular synthesis with only one grain, like in the polyend tracker - which has both wavetable and granular (with one grain).
I think that granular shines when you use multiple grains all over the sample and automate their positions, that makes for some intriguing pads. But what if its limited to one grain? Isn’t it basically the same as wavetable synthesis with automated wavetable position?

The original tracker workflow (on amiga) - a demonstration
It was 2012 when I saw a tracker (renoise) for the first time in my life and the exotic “hacker” type interface got me hooked right away. I tried milkytracker too and with time I slowly put the puzzle of the history of trackers together.
But this video explained and demonstrated the upcomings and the workflow of the historic trackers so well, that I really feel like “I get it now!”, I now understand the place where trackers stand in the musical universe and where they absolutely outshine every other daws approach.
This video opened my eyes to why some things are hard to do in Renoise (- its just not where it came from), where the potential lies that I just haven’t used yet (even more and bold sampling than I currently do) and finally the amazing job the developers of Renoise did to connect the trackers of back then to the possibilities of todays music-making-technology (VSTs and such).
I know there are a lot of amiga veterans in this forum, looking down on youngsters that haven’t been brought up with this background, but this post is for people like me who enjoy getting a glimpse into the past and getting educated, inspired and entertained by it.

Using Sends for FX/automations
Hi, the automation stuff has always been my big setback in Renoise. I’ve done a lot of reading and have been experimenting with send tracks. As I want to be able to use the same effect in different ways multiple times in a track (or sometimes, track group). So now, I’d like some input concerning best practices.
This example is an oversimplification, but would be sufficient to have a better understanding of what to do. I think I’d prefer using the pattern editor for automations, as it’s likely quicker.
Let’s say I want to apply D16 Decimort 2 and Devastor to entire drums section (for distortion/bitcrush).
And Valhalla Delay to a couple of tracks (individually) on the “Atmos” section.
Obviously, the sends would be placed on the aforementioned tracks/track groups and sent to the send tracks. Should the FX be placed in the send tracks? And automations are done in the sends section? In general, what do you think is the most efficient method of having such automations?

Fircomp 2 does not show up in Renoise 3.3.2
I’ve been interested in trying Fircomp 2 (fircomp 2 - Jon V Audio), but it’s VST3 only and does not show up at all as a plugin in Renoise 3.3.2 (Windows 10). There is no VST2 version of the plugin. Apparently the AU version does work fine on macOS at least.

Is it still possible to get the old scream filter?
I used to love the sound of this, is it still possible to use in “modern” Renoise?
Thanks!

How I loooooooooooove this little sweet fellow! It ads such funky swing that it’s almost comical how the song sounds completely different when turning it off.
