Beginner help with chiptune

Renoise Forum - May 17, 2021 - 18:55

Hello, I just downloaded renoise for an arduino project that uses it to create a file for sound synthesis. I’m just wondering, how do I enter things into the tracker, I read the manual(first 10 pages) and am lost?

Renoise weird cpu

Renoise Forum - May 17, 2021 - 13:02

So I am testing some cpu stuff ( testing on an old i5 cpu )
I created a patch in u-he zebra hz , which enables all diva filter ( eight of them )
In renoise I can input 3 notes reaching 80 percent before going overboard , adding a fourth note gives cpu overload ( this is when the zebra-hz patch was created in renoise )
Restarting renoise and reloading the patch , I can easily input 5 notes before going hayware ,which brings it on par with reaper performance
This is verry weird

61-Key MIDI Keyboard Suggestions

Renoise Forum - May 17, 2021 - 03:31

Hey everyone,

Very new user here. Just purchased Renoise x Hive 2.1 and wanted to see what some other more experienced users prefer using as their MIDI keyboard of choice!

Some notes:
-I’m looking to keep the price at or under 300$ USD
-I would like something more beginner-friendly if possible
-I currently reside in Colorado if anyone recommends any music stores in the area!
-Compatibility is the biggest concern above all
-Looking to use synthesizer functions more than piano so weighted keys are not crucial
-Running on a MacBook Pro with macOS Big Sur

Some MIDI keyboards I am currently looking at:
-Arturia Keylab Essential 61-Key Keyboard
-Novation Launchkey 61 MK3
-Alesis VI61 61-Key Controller
-Nektar Impact LX61

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds to this post. I’m leaning towards Arturia unless I am convinced otherwise! Cheers everyone.

Vital - small GUI and sporadic crashes

Renoise Forum - May 16, 2021 - 17:16

Using Renoise 3.3.2 and having some issues with Vital. It was working yesterday, but suddenly the GUI when opening it the second time is ultra small:

Of course I tried resizing but that doesn’t help. Also it crashes quite often and the GUI becomes glitchy.
This is with Ubuntustudio 20.4 / XFCE.

How to import midi files, but in Linux, and just get sound?

Renoise Forum - May 16, 2021 - 01:33

I have FluidSynth installed. I know Renoise knows it exists because I can see that in the console output. But it doesn’t show up in the midi devices in the Load File With Options menu. When I load the midi file, I get a bunch of blank tracks with no note data. There are blank midi instruments and I assigned presets to them but I don’t get any sounds when I press play because there is no note data.

How do I get note data to import?

Wow just wow ( cpu measurement )

Renoise Forum - May 16, 2021 - 01:25

I am playing the dblue "tension "demo song , looping at patter 20
on a desktop pc , a decade old Intel(R) Core™ i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz , with 8 gigs of ram
Versus a 4 year old top of the line dell latitude E7470 laptop , core I7 -6600 @2.60Ghz 2.80Ghz , 16 gig of ram
Both are using asio drivers set @512 samples , using the roland integra as audio interface .
Both are hovering around 20 % cpu …
Measurements when using vst instruments are roughly on par .
Who would have thought that ?
I can buy this laptop from my brother but I think I am going to pass ,I was expecting a better erformance
Any geek techs who can clarify this ?

Tool to Play/Record Chords with Single Keyboard Key?

Renoise Forum - May 15, 2021 - 22:25

Hi Everyone,

One of the things I like most about Renoise is the ability to use the computer keyboard to play and enter notes. as shown here: Playing Notes with the Computer Keyboard - Renoise User Manual. Is there a tool that, when I turned it on, would allow me to pick a tonic and scale that, when playing a single key on the computer keyboard, will play the chord for that note in the scale, rather than a single note? In other words, if I select C Major, I would like the Z key to play a C Major chord, the X key to play a D Minor chord, the C key to play the E Minor chord, the V key to play the F Major chord, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Mixing & Mastering experiences

Renoise Forum - May 15, 2021 - 18:31

This is the first time that I mix and master also with studio monitors next to studio headphones and my common Hi-Fi speakers. What can I say? I can say for sure that I couldn’t mix and master without Hi-Fi speakers as a reference. But why? Well, as always I compose and mix completely on studio headphones until the track is finished, then I switch to speakers to check what’s up. This time I switched to my new studio monitors (Genelec 8030 CP) first and it sounded great, similar to what I’ve heard on headphones. But when I switched to Hi-Fi speakers it sounded like a piece of shit, completely flat without any contrast and a dysbalance in its volume regardng to all the instruments, especially when it comes to the drums (primarely kick and hihats). Due to the fact that the reason for existence of mastering is that a song sounds good on every system, studio monitors alone obviously aren’t enough. I wonder how someone can mix and master with studio monitors as a reference only, seemingly this is mostly the case, isn’t it? For me this is not the solution, I tend to mix and master on Hi-Fi speakers and check again on studio headphones. The studio monitors are an addition, but not THE reference. And yes, of course I calibrated the monitors to my room. So how can this be? Should I wash my ears? Am I doing something wrong? What are your experiences in terms of that?

Recommended Studio Headphones

Renoise Forum - May 15, 2021 - 07:34

So I bought now an ATH-M50X, very happy with it (thanks @TNT) and also sold all my shitty, over-expensive Beyerdynamics. So now I am looking for a second really good studio headphones in the range of 100-250 Euro. Any suggestions for me?

I am pretty lost now about what vendor and model I should choose. I only know what I do not like:

  • Highpassed lows
  • Compressed lows
  • Beyerdynamics, and other German brands (too much “hightech” electronics fixing the sound)
  • Lack of “airness” (due compression/limitation or so)
  • Predetermined breaking points

Thanks for help.

PS: I discussed a bit on the topic with a friend, and we concluded that your ear and head size, so the pressure on your ears matter extremely for the sound. I found it funny that I mostly agree with the measurements on rtings.com while my friend trusts in innerfidelity headphone measurements. Maybe Innerfidelity is using another head dummy than rtings simply, and the head dummy of rtings matches more my head

Least painful way to use Renoise and Normal People Apps on Ubuntu 20.04.2 at the same time?

Renoise Forum - May 15, 2021 - 03:57

Running Xubuntu 20.04.2 with IceWM.

I have gone down the rabbit hole of ALSA, Jack and PulseAudio. I have come out with no solid information on what I am supposed to do and no community guides that actually work, just piles and piles of sanctimonious nonsense that “pulse bad use ALSA is good.” I want to be able to use Renoise and Apps That Normal People Who Don’t Care About Pro Audio Quality Use at the same time. When I say “at the same time” I mean “when Renoise is running, Firefox can also run audio,” not “Jack and PulseAudio are running at the same time but cannot both do audio because of software mixing even though I tried to make dmix do that.”

What is the least painful way to make this happen? I do not care about sound latency on the Renoise side, I am not playing live and I’m not syncing Renoise to any external devices right now. If I press play on renoise and there’s a 0.0000000001ms delay, that’s fine. I do not want your opinions on “how ALSA/Jack is so much better that Pulse and I switched years ago and I’ve never looked back” because that isn’t actually helping, I tried that and it didn’t work, and also I don’t care. I just want to be able to bang out a tune once every few months when the urge strikes. I just want it to work. Maybe I’ll figure out how2proaudio on Ubuntu some other time when I have the patience and it sounds fun to learn, but given everything happening in the world right now I have One (1) Learn New Thing thread, and I would like to dedicate that to Renoise itself.

Someone who won’t preach at me, please help.

Recording MIDI from VST?

Renoise Forum - May 14, 2021 - 17:36

Hi Everyone,

I know that this has been discussed over the years, but I haven’t seen a recent posting on this issue here in the forum (not since Renoise 3, at least). I would like to run a VST sequencer (such as Cthulu) that outputs MIDI within Renoise, and have Renoise record the MIDI output of this sequencer as it is running. Is this possible to do, perhaps with virtual MIDI cables? I know that I can have the sequencer drive a separate instrument directly, but the notes are not recorded in that case. My idea is to actually use two virtual midi devices - LoopBe and LoopMidi, with the sequencer output to LoopBE, have the MIDI data routed between LoopBe and LoopMidi using something like Midiberry (for Windows), and then have the MIDI data recorded on the instrument track using LoopMidi as the input device. Would this work? Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Graphic design for tracks/albums, etc

Renoise Forum - May 14, 2021 - 15:55

Aside form my regular work, I moonlight as a graphic designer, and especially enjoy working on design for musical/creative projects. If anyone out there needs graphic design for an album or a track or what-have-you, send me a pm and we can talk. I have extensive experience in print media design with a variety of clients. You can see some of my design work (quick sketches, really) on my bandcamp page here: https://zensphere.bandcamp.com/

These are all within a certain aesthetic, but I can do all kinds of different styles of work, and always aim to work closely with your creative vision.

Plenty busy with work and life/music in general these days, but thought I would throw this out there in case anybody needs some design work!

Going deeper, I’ve been following this tutorial video for making drum sounds from scratch. All was going well, but hit a wall halfway through with the effects Sends.
in the video, he maps 2 x sends to another to combine them layering some noise on a bass kick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoKoTUJAXrc

Basically I seem unable to get both Sends playing at the same time. At first I thought it was because he was using an older Renoise version, so I used the newer ‘Multiband Send’ instead, but the same problem occurs.

In attempting to troubleshoot/ test I made a new song and DID actually get all the Sends working. But then a couple of steps into recreating where I was going, I’m having the same issue. The send Split isn’t working, and only getting a signal to one or the other - selecting both Send 3 doesn’t function.

I realise this is maybe venturing way past beginner questions, but hoping someone may be able to see if it’s a bug, or if it’s me and I’ve misconfigured something?. I’m attaching a file which is a start again version of where I was going with the tutorial, and the error is occurring. Any help appreciated

How do I make my songs longer in Renoise?

Renoise Forum - May 13, 2021 - 23:55

I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I’m using 512 lines for the trackers and my track is at 180bpm. At around line 260 it’s recorded only 33 seconds worth of audio as indicated by the timer at the top of the GUI. I know of artists who use Renoise who’ve created 6-7 minute tracks so I’m failing to see what I’m doing incorrectly or what I could do to fix this problem. If someone could help that’d be awesome.
