Access to phrase editor

Renoise Forum - September 22, 2021 - 01:00

Do I understand correctly that since renoise.song().selected_phrase is read-only, there is no way to select another phrase via code? And also, we can’t make phrase play/stop via code, right?

I’m asking because I wanted to make quick preview of phrases in my tool.

Bug: Midi recording precision dependent on latency

Renoise Forum - September 21, 2021 - 12:07

Hi,

when I record midi in Renoise (macos), the recorded result get worse regarding the timing with increasing latency. For testing I play an external synth with a short impulse sound, and record the notes then, playing a short sample sound in Renoise. If I set the latency to 80ms and focus on the external synth sound, and later replay the recording, the timing is completely messed up. There should be a latency of course, but the space between the notes should be the same. This is not the case at all. Is this maybe a conceptual problem in the midi code?

I did the same test in Bitwig, and there the space between the notes stays absolutely constant, no matter what latency.

I think this makes midi recording not really satisfying in Renoise. I can’t tell about Windows version, but I would assume it is the same.

The distance between the notes should not be dependent on latency.

New Tool (3.3): value stepper

Renoise Forum - September 21, 2021 - 00:16

Hello everyone!

I’m new to Renoise and one thing I was missing is to be able to raise/lower values with keyboard inside the editor so I wrote a small tool today to solve this and to get familiar with the API.

value stepper

Step values up and down with keyboard inside the Pattern Editor.

Similar to the Transpose One Note Up command but also works for effect parameters, instrument index, panning, volume and delay.

Provides four keybindings in Global / Pattern Editor:

  • step up and down by a configurable size (default is one but you can adjust it in Tools / value stepper)

  • step up and down by 16 (except notes, they get stepped by octaves instead)

limitations

For now it only works for a single column that is currently under your cursor. Block selection is ignored.
Stepping the fading param in the volume column or the slide for the pan column doesn’t work either. I might add these later.

download

I don’t know yet how to submit stuff to be included in the tools page, so you can get it from my repo:

https://gitlab.com/unlessgames/unless_renoise

I also found an existing tool that sounds like it does the same thing called Unified Value Shift and Transpose, but it doesn’t work on effect parameters and seems abandoned.

Any feedback is welcome!

VSTs Not showing

Renoise Forum - September 20, 2021 - 23:52

I have two machines running Renoise. On my main computer all my VSTs show up no problem. On my second and quite older machine, some do and some don’t even though they are recognized when it scans for them, as I see them at the bottom when it loads or i do a rescan for plug ins. I scoured the forum for answers but found none that worked. Driving me bonkers. Arrrggghhh

Deleting unused tracks when there is a group returns un-collapsible first track

Renoise Forum - September 20, 2021 - 11:28

Dunno if I’m doing something wrong, missing an option, but noticed when deleting unused tracks in a song which has a group present, the outcome is a first track which can’t be expanded to input note events / panning & volume columns.

On 3.3.2 on windows here, first make sure you have a project with grouped tracks on the most left of the pattern, then select ‘delete unused tracks’ from the top left like;

The outcome will be;

No matter what I try to do with the first track, I can’t get it to become a ‘normal’ track where you can input notes.

Nothing earthshatteringly breaking or what a ctrl+t can’t fix, but thought mentioning.

Is there any way to change the piano color in sampler

Renoise Forum - September 20, 2021 - 05:54

Just as the title says, I have all my other colors low/dark to be easy on the eyes and the piano in sampler is just a bit blindingly white, is there any ways to change it either by changes some file or in some selection I am missing?

Ticks per line (song options ) influences internal midi routing accuracy

Renoise Forum - September 19, 2021 - 17:33

As topic says , even when there is NO data in the pattern editor and NO renoise instrument
Using a midi plugin to trigger another vsti instrument , the tpl has a big effect on the internal midi resolution .
How is this possible ?
Here is a file , the rendered audio is a midi plugin (loomer architect ) sending1/64th note triggers to microtonic , I gradually increase the ticks per line and you can hear the resolution of the timing getting tighter ( evenly spaced at the end =good )
I think tpl should not influence the midi routing whatsoever

Hide Renoise title bar [feature request]

Renoise Forum - September 19, 2021 - 16:11

Hi, I would like to request a pretty simple feature: a GUI option to hide/disable Renoise’s custom title bar. I have found a similar request in the past so I believe I am not the only person looking for it

The reasons why I would like to have this features are:

  • UI homogeneity
  • Saving vertical space
  • Reduce visual pollution

Thanks!

My Akai MPK Mini Keeps Making Piano Sounds With Instruments

Renoise Forum - September 18, 2021 - 20:51

So whenever I use my Akai Mini MK2 to play notes on individual instruments I’ll hear the sound of note being played, but it ends in a piano noise which is rather annoying. I use my keyboard whenever I’m doing anything in Renoise because using the laptop keyboard is kind of bothersome to me. If anyone can help that would be awesome, thanks.

Tascam Model 12 / Renoise Mac Midi Clock Master/Slave Question

Renoise Forum - September 18, 2021 - 20:16

Hi there,

I’m trying to sync my Tascam Model 12 with Renoise via Midi Clock… I’ve tried this approach via Tascam’s USB port as well as using Midi cables into my Mac (also via usb but the midi ports on the Tascam).

I’m hoping this is just a simple misunderstanding on my part but I have a few notes/questions:

  1. I’m trying to make Renoise the master and have Tascam be the slave. Under the midi preferences, the only options for Master are either ‘none’ or the Tascam, not Renoise itself… is this normal? Is there a way to ‘set’ Renoise as the Clock Master?

  2. I’ve been able to successfully operate the other way around, where the Tascam acts as the Clock Master, to which Renoise will react and respond to any sort of moving around to the clock when operating on the Tascam… however only when the BPMs are in matching on both systems. Ideally, I’d like to be able to make music that has bpm changes… which is why I’m hoping to Renoise as the Master… is there something missing here?

  3. It appears the Timecode from the Tascam doesn’t work with this pairing, as the above has only been successful when I try Midi Clock

Wrapping up, I’ll say by ultimate goal is to basically have all timing paremeters be operated by Renoise while being able to still record and mix etc in the box of the Tascam… I plan on using analag out functions for the actual recording which is why other functions aren’t super crucial. I’ll also add the Midi instrument settings have been successful when hooking up my keyboard etc… so this is mainly a clock question.

Thanks for your help as I’m still a beginner!

AudioDamage Quanta - Inf db clicks and dropouts (windows 10 VST3)

Renoise Forum - September 18, 2021 - 17:47

Anyone else using Quanta in Renoise? I’ve just started encountering a serious audio glitch, and I have no idea what might be causing it. Occasionally there will be extremely loud clicks that will completely top out the meters, regardless of track volume. My project is only using about 25% CPU. This happens in both the VST3 and VST2 versions. It also happens both during playback and rendering.

Here’s what a rendered Quanta track looks like. You can see the clicks that are much louder than any of the other audio.

Renoise fails to launch on Artix Linux

Renoise Forum - September 17, 2021 - 19:41

Upon trying to launch renoise, I get these error messages.

Renoise LOG> Error Message: An error occurred while launching the application: Renoise LOG> Error Message: 'Failed to load the resource file: 'Icons/KeyCommand_Linux.bmp'. Renoise LOG> Exception: Failed to load the resource file: 'Icons/KeyCommand_Linux.bmp'.

I’ve not a clue what these resource files are and I’ve tried redownloading and extracting renoise suspecting I accidentally deleted a directory but to no avail.

Undocking views / customized views

Renoise Forum - September 17, 2021 - 15:58

I love Renoise for years, but two things in my workflow are real missing in Renoise. And I think probably in others too.

The day that Renoise can load multiple songs in different tabs (like in Modplug for example) and when it’s possible to drag the different windows like Effect and Instrument Browsers in a custom setup (Like in Visual Studio for example), on that day I jump so hard from my studio chair that I can say hello to my upper neighbors through the ceiling.

Is this possible to implement?

All best Mario

Another Rudimentary Granular Effect

Renoise Forum - September 16, 2021 - 04:22

Yet another cry for real granular effects IN Renoise, NOT VST.

I have been messing around with the Convolver convolution reverb effect. In essence, it is a very rough delay/sampler that applies an IR (impulse response) as a reverb. That’s two effects in one. It’s a delay in a way because it’s ‘Pre-delay’ function is available, from 0ms up to 500ms. The Pre-delay is basically a sampler, that can have its sampling length adjusted. Adding an LFO on random at 5LPC can give the Pre-delay a varying sample length by adjusting ‘where’ it begins. It’s imposing a delayed start on a convolution signal. Place a reverb IR in the Convolver and then modulate the Pre-delay with a random LFO. A gentle chopped-sample played out over the top of the original sample, very granular.

Where this falls short is how it does not allow modulation for a ‘start’ position or a ‘length’. By wiggling these two sliders around with the mouse, you’ll get all sorts of neat artifacts (crackling, buzzing, etc.).

I’m wondering aloud (via type). If these extra sliders could gain modulation, would we actually have a very rudimentary ‘actual’ granular device? Rock and roll, rudimentary granular effect with signal delay Then, if we could have an actual signal splitter, and place that in a doofer with say, 4 convolvers, with an actual pitch altering device, and greater pre-delay time… Heck, we’d have a really pretty smear-generator.

Ah what the heck, please just give us the granular control from the other tracker, Radium. It’s beautiful and would just be part of the sampler…

Please @taktik? Pretty please?

Alternate Version of a Song I Made

Renoise Forum - September 16, 2021 - 02:28

Hey users, so i’ve been working on a project for about almost, if not, a year now. And it’s finally finished! If you look back at a couple of my older posts, you can see me talking about it, but for a while, i honestly thought that it would never come to fruition. One of the main reasons i thought this, was simply that after the 5th song, i pretty much couldn’t finish any of the new songs i started up after, either i got discouraged, or i just thought it didn’t belong, or some other reason.

However, once i put finishing, above all other worries, i finally managed to complete the album, and get it out the door. I think there was a lot of things that i could’ve done differently, and i definitely learned a lot while making it, but I’m glad that i committed to it, and stuck with it for so long, and i definitely plan on making a sequel, that will pretty much get more of what i wanted to express in this one.

The song in this post however, is a alternate version of the first track on the album. I basically just tried to strip my first song down to it’s most essential elements, and compose something more straightforward for the last song on the album, as a closing track,

So that’s pretty much what this post is about, as always, if you have any feedback on; composition, mixing, or a specific section, etc, feel free to share, I’m always looking for things that i can improve on, and get better at.

Also once i get the stems to all of the tracks rendered out and in a zip file, I’ll post them here, XRNI files too. Also, all of my music is free to download, and this album is too, so if you want to sample anything them, use them in a video, or something of that nature, feel free to go ahead and do that.

I think that’s everything so here’s the link for you to listen: Listen to Noods! (Cassette Mix) by Professional Amateur in Musical Capsule (Vol. 1) playlist online for free on SoundCloud

Thank you for reading this post, and thank you very much for taking the time to listen, i hope you enjoy. Cheers!
