Beatsync keyboard shortcut?

Renoise Forum - August 26, 2022 - 10:34

I think I may have seen this requested before, but being primarily keyboard driven I find the process of having to click the beatsync box a little bit of a workflow stopper, if a keyboard shortcut for beatsync was created this would be a nice little upgrade

Does any have an old (pre ver. 2) quickstart pdf? It contained something hilarious

Renoise Forum - August 25, 2022 - 16:28

Some of you folks who have been around a while might remember a line in the old quickstart that was like:

“Before we get started, sit back, relax, and roll yourself a huge spliff…”

I’ve always thought this was hilarious and makes me nostalgic for the days when devs were being a bit more cheeky in their documentation. I’m sure they eventually realized this was “unprofessional” and took it out.

I would just like to have a screenshot of it for lols.

Thanks in advance

Wavetables in renoise

Renoise Forum - August 23, 2022 - 17:15

hey all, just thought I’d share this technique for making rudimentary crossfading wavetables natively in renoise.

Pretty simple idea. Multiple modulation sets with stepper devices set to a step value of 0, custom crossfade curves, stepper reset tied to a macro. This example has four waves in the table, but the principle can be extended if you want more “frames.” Obviously, crossfading is a fairly primitive form of wave morphing, but it works, and can sound pretty decent, at least in my opinion

here’s a very simple example of the principle:
basic shapes wavetable.xrni (5.8 KB)

the main downside of this method being that if you wish to further sculpt the modulation of the sound in a consistent way across waveforms, each modulation device must be copied and pasted across modulation sets. so it’s a little tedious. But, the upside being that you can have entirely different modulation behavior between different wave frames, which can make for some very interesting sounds. Fun to stack multiple waveforms in each set, too… as usual, sky’s the limit

Does Renoise fully utilize the latest cpu's?

Renoise Forum - August 23, 2022 - 13:37

I’m running out of processing power in Renoise so I’m planning to update my ryzen 3600.

I’m trying to decide between 5700x and 5900x. Can Renoise use all of the cores/threads (12/24) on 5900x? If I’m understanding this right, more threads is better than slight increase in clock speed?

Need help reading SysEx MIDI data

Renoise Forum - August 22, 2022 - 01:46

I have 3.5 in Floppy disks filled with MIDI sequencer data made over 20 years ago. My old MIDI disk drive no longer works and I need to get the data from the floppy disks loaded on my Windows 10 PC and then fed back into my old Alesis MMT8 sequencer, to run my Roland U20 midi keyboard.

I used to use a program called SysEx 97, but that no longer works on Windows 10. I’m looking for a program to replace the SysEx 97, and I was hoping that Renoise would work. Does anyone know if Renoise can read SysEx data from a floppy disk drive ?

Summary of the path needed

SysEx MIDI data from 3.5 inch disk loaded into Windows 10 PC
SysEX Midi data from Windows 10 PC to sequencer

Thanks for any suggestions .

Roland U20 keyboard
Alesis MMT8 sequencer
Windows 10 PC
External floppy drive with USB plug
USB to midi in / out MIDI cables to run back into the MMT8 sequencer.
Sequencer OUT cable to Roland Keyboard

Could somebody please fix ZynZilla?

Renoise Forum - August 21, 2022 - 18:30

@It-Alien @noisebeuter @Raul or somebody?

I can get it to work - I had to adjust the ‘manifest.xml’ file to read API 6.0 (I know it could be 6.X). Then I had to ‘Enable’ the tool, as it was disabled.

I now can get the tool to show up and it works - Look!

The issue is that I keep getting the same pop-up error message.

main.lua:577: unknown property or function ‘insert_sample_mapping’ for an object of type ‘Instrument’
stack traceback:
[C]: in function ‘_error’
[string “do…”]:48: in function <[string “do…”]:35>
main.lua:577: in function ‘generate’
./gui.lua:861: in function <./gui.lua:860>

If I knew how to fix it, I would. This particular Tool is incredibly versatile. It’s structure is not too different from the PadSynth, but it’s sound generation is VERY unique. Very FM-ish tones and excellent variety for more melodic waveforms. I repeat, this sound generator is very different.

If anybody could fix this, that would be excellent!

Cheetah MS800 Instrument

Renoise Forum - August 21, 2022 - 07:30

I was really in love with Aphex Twin’s Cheetah EP a few years ago, and it became a really personal album for me. At the time, I was totally involved in acoustic music, and devoted no brain power to thinking about DSP or how certain electronic sounds are achieved.

Fast-forward, and after wading through all of the hype around that album and how complicated the eponymous synthesizer that was used for many of the sounds is supposed to be, I realized that some of my favorite digital-and-crunchy yet flowing-and-smooth patches that can be programmed on the instrument are really just bread-and-butter for present-day renoise.

So I made a little instrument:

Cheetah_12.xrni (14.8 KB)

Most macros are there to let you thicken things up, but the first sets the speed for how quickly the samples are cycled through. All the waveforms used are just hand-drawn, but it can be fun to swap out for radically different synthesis methods, i.e. one sample is FM-generated and another one is “8-bit.” It can be especially nice to set a few samples to “silent” to give some breathing room as you cycle. I have yet to set up the LFO’s to be “prime” to one another, but a little bit of tweaking could set up some really complex sound unfoldings.

•GRAIN SCRUBBER• xrni

Renoise Forum - August 21, 2022 - 03:16

Hey all,

Cooked up a new native granular instrument for renoise. Credit to @beatsgo for providing the initial inspiration for using phrase control as a functional sample offset. Yes, you can automate sample start position with this instrument. Some limitations apply!

Each single line phrase (probabilistically) triggers a note with an attached sxx command. Which phrase you access with each key press is determined by the first assigned macro “start position.” Each key press triggers only one phrase, so repeated note-on events are required in the pattern editor to approach granularity. This I see as an asset because you can control the rhythm and speed of note events for various effects. A solid wall of notes on each line will approach traditional granular synthesis (depending on your bpm and lpb values) whereas slower patterns, like every 8 lines (or whatever you want), will produce really interesting rhythmic effects. Very versatile.

Anyway, play around with it, have fun, drop in your own samples and share the results if you get something interesting. It helps to start with a sample that has some interesting variation to begin with - depending on the result you are after, of course.

I’ll aim to make a little demonstration video soon. In the meantime, here is the patch. Macros should be pretty self explanatory, but if anyone has questions, this is a good place to ask.

I left a couple of macros open and there are no fx applied, just an LP filter in the modulation section.

I’d recommend starting with a pattern with every line or every other line filled, midi mapping the macros to your favorite controller (along with bpm for extra fun), pressing play and tweaking knobs. Again, drop in your own samples and see what you can create

GRAIN SCRUBBER v1.xrni (892.1 KB)

pretty tedious work making all the phrases for this one, so if you want to show some love you can donate thru my soundcloud page here: Stream •zensphere• / slujr music | Listen to songs, albums, playlists for free on SoundCloud or better yet, buy some of my tunes if you can stand them, lol : https://zensphere.bandcamp.com/
Of course, no expectation, though! This is a free will offering to y’all
hope you enjoy

New Tool (0.1): Renoise Simple Midi File Support

Renoise Forum - August 20, 2022 - 17:53
Renoise Simple Midi File Support General idea

Renoise has built-in support for midi files importing. It works by creating a new midi instrument and adds new dedicated tracks in existing patterns.

This plugin will reuse existing instrument and will only update existing tracks with notes from the file.

Current implementation
  • reads midi files with .xrmid extension,
  • prints notes and file information in Scripting Terminal.
  • adds midi note events (note, volume, delay) to selected pattern track.
  • adjusts number of pattern lines and visible note columns to match the midi file.
Capabilities and limitations

This is my first Renoise tool and first code in Lua. I am also new to the midi file format and midi events. The use case implemented here is very simple and might be limited to my specific need. It is not meant to be a replacement for the built-in midi files import nor a general purpose midi file to Renoise song converter.

It is not possible to override midi files import procedure so the midi files need to be renamed to have .xrmid extension. E.g. my-file.mid needs to be renamed to my-file.xrmid.

Currently, it only interprets note-on and note-off midi events. All notes will use currently selected instrument. On import, currently select track will be cleared and extended if needed. Only midi channel 1 will be read.

It will not work well for multi-instrument or percussion midi files.

Usage

Double click any .xrmid file in songs or instruments file browser. Currently selected track in currently selected pattern will be replaced with the notes from the file.

Feedback

This tool works well enough for the collection of midi files I have. I haven’t tested it enough on other midi files available on the internet, hence the version 0.1. Any suggestions on other use cases that it should support is much appreciated. Example midi files for testing are welcomed.

Credits

MIDI file import is done with MIDI.lua by Peter J Billam. It was released under MIT/X11 licence and has been included here without any changes in the code.

General plugin structure has been significantly inspired by Additional File Format Import Support code by Martin Bealby.

Thanks!

This tool is available on GitHub and is released under Apache License Version 2.0.

Best way to align song settings to an existing song or sample?

Renoise Forum - August 19, 2022 - 17:38

My use cases:

  • I record the basic idea of a song with a mic, and I want to use it a basis and continue from Renoise.
  • I want to remix a song, and bring in the full song or stems into Renoise to build on top.

Is there an automated way to do this? I’d also settle for a methodical, but effective and reliable way to do this manually.

My current process is to guesstimate the BPM (or look it up if it’s a known song), then fiddle with the sample start, or the delay column until it is sort of aligned. Problem is it’s sometimes hard to pin down, and can drift over time. With beat detection I assume it would be possible to automatically analyze the whole song sample and set up the settings so the pattern never drifts from it and is aligned.

Also, is there an effective way to fill a track with a long song sample, so wherever I start playback that track will resume at that spot? (I could fill the pattern with notes with sample offsets, but that would be really tedious.)

Strange mod wheel behavior when rendering to wav. NI FM7 + Renoise 3.4.1 or 3.4.2

Renoise Forum - August 18, 2022 - 15:50

Hi all. Here is the situation, i’m using NI FM7 vst for pads, i have already put a comand line for midi control to play the sound with mod wheel, everythings sounds good, but when i render to *,wav it apears that the mod wheel is off. Also problem apears when you stop song and play again.

Renoise version 3.4.1, 3.4.2

Doe’s any one experienced this situation?

update - it seams that it will only react to midi value changeing, you have to write more than one value to make it work.
