Capture / Retrospective MIDI Record

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2022 - 21:17

There’s one thing that I’m really, really missing from other DAWs and that’s the ability to not care about hitting record (I like to compose most of my music by recording live performance parts).

I’m not exactly sure how this would be implemented best in Renoise, but I’m thinking of a constantly recording buffer and the same way Ableton does it (Capture Notes)… Maybe others could chime in on exact implementation. I just wanted to throw this out there, as the one and only request I’d have for the next milestone of Renoise.

Modifier key to put multiple samples dragged into Keyzones editor into single note

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2022 - 21:10

Referring to a question I posted earlier, I’d like to use modifier keys when dragging samples into the Keyzones editor, to have them placed on a single key and optionally (by using another modifier combo) have them sorted into velocity ranges on that same key.

Suggested behavior:

  • Hold CTRL while dragging multiple samples into Keyzone editor to place them on the same key
  • Hold CTRL + SHIFT to place them on the same key and automatically arranged into velocity ranges.

Trying to get to grips with basic edit operations

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2022 - 20:59

I’ve had Renoise for I guess ten years but always put it aside because I didn’t find it intuitive to do basic things. This time around I actually want to find out how to do these things, in as simple methods as possible, preferably using single-step operations (one hotkey combination and done). Here goes:

  1. How do I clear the current column that the cursor is in?
  2. How do I deselect a currently selected column?
  3. How can I clear the current cell including any effect parameters, without interfering with my clipboard?

How do I drag multiple samples to one single key?

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2022 - 19:10

Making a drum kit with several round-robin samples, meaning there’s multiple sample variations of the same hit, on the same key.

When dragging in samples, they always tend to be distributed over the whole keyboard. How can I have them on a single key without having to afterwards go in and change their Baset Note and Note Ranges?

Online private tutors for Renoise? Or In-person Los Angeles area?

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2022 - 01:19

I notice that there are on-line tutor session for all other DAWs. Through sites like Wyzant or Lessons.com you can pay a fee for private help. Is anyone willing to do that for Renoise? This could be a good way to make extra cash but i cant find anyone who does it.

Record notes plugin via OP-Z midi echo

Renoise Forum - July 27, 2022 - 20:09

Record notes Chordjam via OP-Z midi echo:

  1. load Chordjam in [slot01]
  2. Set midi routing in plugin tab [slot01] to [slot02]
  3. load VST in [slot02]
  4. select “OP-Z” in “output device” in [slot02]
  5. select “OP-Z” in “input device” in [slot03]
  6. in [slot03] set “assigned track” to record midi to track-xxx
  7. when armed, Chordjam output notes will be recorded to “assigned track” with no delay

Remark:

  • I this case is use Chordjam, but any note generator plugin can be used
  • Be sure that the midi in & out + midi echo is enabled on the OP-Z
  • with “slot” I mean instrument slot
  • track-xxx is desired track to record notes to, it can also be set to “current track”

An album of lyrebird songs that somehow turned into folky stuff

Renoise Forum - July 27, 2022 - 15:40

I recorded a lyrebird’s song with an old tape deck and when I listened back, the music was a combination of the lyrebird and whatever demos I’d had on the tape I recorded over. Not sure how exactly it all happened, a cosmic mystery for sure. The resulting music was a stream of short, folksy songs about ghosts and the passage or stopping of time.

How to send bank select with Midi CC 0 only?

Renoise Forum - July 26, 2022 - 07:45

I’m trying to sequence my Dreadbox Typhon, using a normal DIN-5 midi cable from my MOTU interface, and “LineIn Ret” mode. The timing seems good enough, but I can’t choose the bank/program.

The Typhon is a bit peculiar in that it uses Midi CC 0 only, and not 32. If I use Inst Midi Control to send CC0 = 3, then PC 5, then it will select bank D, program 1 as selected. (Note: the Typhon menus are 1-indexed, not 0-indexed).

Is there any way I can get Renoise to send just CC 0 and not 0+32?

I tried putting this in as midi instrument controls, then sending them using the FX column but that seems to be ignored. If I manually click the bank (CC0), then PC under instrument midi controls then it does select the correct patch.

Key Tracker Reset Hydra To LFO To Hydra

Renoise Forum - July 26, 2022 - 05:20

Using the key tracker to reset an LFO works great, but what if you want to reset many LFO’s/Devices at once? It is messy to have a ton of key trackers just to do this.

What if you want one key tracker to reset multiple LFO’s/Devices? And what if you wanted one of those reset LFOs to control many devices? This device chain does all that.

Instrument cuts off suddenly on a specific line if not solo'd

Renoise Forum - July 26, 2022 - 01:34

Brief Description: This bug (I assume it’s a bug) just started suddenly today on a song I am working on. In a specific pattern (Pattern #16) of my song, at line 31, my bass will cut off suddenly when the track is not solo’d, but when solo’d it continues as normal. This only occurs with my current instrument on this one pattern in this one track. All other tracks are muted so I don’t think it’s phase related. I copy/pasted the pattern from elsewhere in the track and it repeated the behavior. This same pattern is used throughout the song and this issue only occurs on Pattern #16, it works as intended everywhere else. Additionally, the playhead continues to move forward on the sample waveform so it isn’t stopping play suddenly to my knowledge. I have also tried copying the track and using that and the issue persists.

Steps to reproduce: Play the song linked here starting from Pattern #16 with the bass (the track is titled simply “Bass” and is colored deep blue) on (but not solo’d). Everything else is muted. Then play Pattern #16 with the bass solo’d and see the difference. Note that the instrument (Instrument 09) will cause this issue at the same line regardless of pitch or when it begins play, as long as it plays before Line 31.

Find the file here

Hope it’s a me problem and not my file so I can learn what not to do!

Renoise as a VST plugin with a bridge

Renoise Forum - July 24, 2022 - 21:45

FL Studio has a very useful feature: you can load the whole DAW as a VST plugin into another DAW. The implementation is done with a seemingly light VST bridge component that opens up the application.

The FL Studio approach takes care if audio rooting and the song tempo & position sync in a perfect way. Effectively the setup setup works as ReWire was intended to work when it was still a thing.

Please implement the similar VST wrapper for Renoise. I’m pretty sure that this would make the Renoise much more interesting software to many professional producers.

AirPods Pro with Renoise on M1 Mac

Renoise Forum - July 24, 2022 - 16:32

Hi, the title pretty much says it all
Looks like something doesn’t really work with Renoise 3.4.2 when I run the output through my AirPods Pro.
This used to work on my Intel Mac before I switched to the Apple Silicon Mac.
Now, what happens is that when I switch output to the AirPods, it works for 3-4 seconds and then the sound is gone. Clicking reinitialize will bring back the sound for 3-4 seconds, but that’s all.

I know BlueTooth is not ideal for working on music, but I have a lot of time on the go and don’t want to buy wired headphones just for Renoise.

Any way to fix it on my end? Or is it a bug?

Killswitch Keymap

Renoise Forum - July 23, 2022 - 15:58

It’d be nice, if there isn’t a way to do so already, to Keymap a button to kill all played sounds on an MIDI keyboard, or have it someone on screen, though having it as a Keymappable button would be ideal for all those times the noises go on forever.

Additionally, extra Keymap functions would be nice, such as play, stop, loop, record on/off, note forward/backwards, octave up/down to have mapped on Keys not used for playing. Me thinks it’d really enhance the workflow and would be neat.

Thanks.

AU (Phonec2) audio rendering fails after update to Renoise 3.4

Renoise Forum - July 22, 2022 - 04:38

Heya! I’ve run into some interesting behavior…

Description:

After updating Renoise to 3.4.2 on an M1 Mac running macOS 12, a previously functional AU plugin started failing to output audio. I’ve confirmed that this AU properly functions in at least one other DAW (a test install of FL Studio 20.9.2), that the same behavior occurs on Renoise 3.4.0, and also that it properly outputs audio in Renoise 3.3.2 in the same configuration. The VST version also functions properly in all versions.

(I’ve also noticed that, independently, Reaktor 6 has started outputting audio on Bus #02 by default, requiring you to enable that to get output. This behavior also shows up in 3.4.0 and not in 3.3.2.)

Reproduction:

  • Open Renoise
  • Load Phonec2 (AU) as plugin
  • Play notes

Expected results:
Audio output, plugin sequencer animating

Actual results:
Neither of those things

Relevant log lines:

STAHLSCHLAG - Doomed

Renoise Forum - July 21, 2022 - 23:26

Hi there,

I just finished the production of a new album. As usual I tracked everything in Renoise. I love it so much. It is just perfect for my needs.

Anyways I wanted to share the first single of it and the official music video. It is maybe not everyone’s taste but well isn’t it cool what we are able to do.

Renoise song directory mode

Renoise Forum - July 21, 2022 - 21:50

Hi,
I want to propose another format of saving of Renoise song - just directory like MySong.xrns.d,
that will contain all stuff that xrns (zip) contains.
Please notice that most cases of saving the .xrns file is during some process of working on a piece
and you are saving unfinished song with intention to work on it later on.
So hundreds or thousands times when you press ctrl+s, resources are wasted to compress everything into .xrns file, while actually you need it only at the end of the song making process, one or maybe few times if you want to correct something. On each save, you don’t need to update all sample data which can be large, actually you need to update just changed components/files of a song project.
For songs with small amount of audio samples this does not make a difference,
but if song contains hundreds of megabytes of samples then it does, mainly for two reasons.
First is more obvious - saving time and unnecessary compressing all of the samples that
actually might be unchanged but take 99% of disk space in the song.
Second one is allowing incremental or differential backups, which I’m finding very important.
If everything is zipped into one file, backup tool will always see the whole file changed,
despite only valuable 1% of data inside has changed. In case of directory mode, backup system will see
for example that sample files are unchanged and will add to backup only small amount of some xml or metadata files.
So I believe that directory format should be default to work with songs, and currently used .xrns format
should be used only for exporting songs for publishing, sharing or archiving.
P.S. currently in Renoise saving a song is blocking whole UI without giving a clue what is going on - if Renoise system really needs this time? Or saving is finished and my system froze for some other reason? Would be nice to have some clearly visible indicator showing that saving is in progress.
