Buying serial number for Renoise 2.8.2 (in 2022)

Renoise Forum - December 23, 2022 - 01:08

If I buy the serial number for the full version of Renoise, will I still be able to use version 2.8.2, or would I have to upgrade to 3.4?

The reason why this would not work for me, is because I have an older mac, and only version 2.8.2 seems to work (I’ve tried installing newer versions, and it does not work) I’ve had the Demo for a bit now, and I really want to buy the full version. Just want to make sure that when I do buy it, I will be able to use it while still being able to use version 2.8.2.

Thanks in advance!

Support for multiple (computer) keyboards

Renoise Forum - December 21, 2022 - 21:10

Imagine a modern notebook with a smaller keyboard that also is used as a workstation via a docking station. Currently you can only setup the shortcuts either for the notebook keyboard or a connected fullsize keyboard, but not both at once. I think this scenario exists very often these days, so support for shortcuts per keyboard would be nice. I have no idea, if the os exposes the keyboard information and key source in an appropriate way though…

If the above is not possible, then a way to step thru multiple keyboard bindings would be nice. Maybe a selectbox which shows the last loaded bindings/paths and is placed right to the “Oct” stepper.

Not sure where to put this, but I was pretty impressed with this progress, and thought I would share.

Check out the way they overlaid those controller messages at 04:09 right on the track. Pretty neat.

Glowing Gridlines (IDM, Electronic)

Renoise Forum - December 20, 2022 - 15:06

Hi everyone! I’m a hobbyist music producer living in Sweden. I’ve been making music for a while but with long breaks in the middle. I picked it up more seriously again around 1.5 years ago, when I rebooted with the Maschine MK3 (and also FL and Reason.) Since then I have been working on progressing more effectively. I got the Polyend Tracker half a year ago, and after some time I started to get into the tracker workflow. This got me into Renoise, and after a bunch of smaller tracks, I finished my first full track in Renoise - Glowing Gridlines.

I’m into old retro-y tracks, and also IDM and Jungle from the 90’s and 2000’s. This track is more of a lo-fi setting (not cheesy lo-fi hiphop), perhaps a bit inspired by old albums from Warp and Rephlex, but also different in many ways. I like to mix some clunkyness with more serious and modern sounds.

You can check out the track here: Song - Glowing Gridlines (IDM, Electronic, Renoise) - YouTube

I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback on the track, as well as any tips or advice. I need to find a bit of interaction and feedback to keep this hobby going I think, since I don’t know any electronic musicians in real life :).

Means to MIDI Input Modulation

Renoise Forum - December 19, 2022 - 21:46

I came across a really cool VST called PocketDial from David Su which modulates the MIDI input of any track on a DAW. The concept of modulating MIDI inputs is not possible natively in Renoise. Technically speaking the MIDI input and audio output are taking into account before any sort of modulation on the sound can be done.

A somewhat workaround this problem is utilizing a VST wrapper with routing capabilities in its place. In this case, Kushview’s Element is one of few that has this capability. As such, you can get this going as shown in the screenshot video.

https://files.catbox.moe/rp0xfb.mp4

Pros:

  • Woohoo more shenanigans.
  • Element can open up to other possible uses besides Midi Input Modulation.

Cons:

  • Not Native, only can use VSTs thus Redux is probably the only “native” way for Renoise.

Just bought a Bass

Renoise Forum - December 19, 2022 - 17:39

Hey, all

As the title says, I just ordered me a bass. Decided on an Ibanez GSR206B in that beautiful (to me) Walnut finish. Its a six-string. I have zero bass experience. This may or may not have been an impulse buy. Short story, I was perusing holiday deals on sweetwater and started browsing through all of the instruments that I don’t own. Saw this bass, very specifically an 8lb 10oz with a rather standout application of the walnut finish. This beauty has been calling to me since. So, pulled the trigger and ordered it up.

Long story, the more I thought about it, the more a six-string bass made sense to me. I’m far more rhythmic than melodic. I have always gravitated towards percussion (particularly hand-percussion and tuned folkish percussion) and own quite a few instruments from those families. At the end of the day, I’m self-aware enough to realise that I likely will never have the particular type of hand/finger dexterity to play a standard guitar of any variety with any amount of virtuosity that would satisfy myself. The type of hand/finger dexterity required for bass, I believe I already more or less have. (this may be bullshit, but I believe it ). Also, as I shift ever deeper into the Experimental/Ambient genres, something about the bass jsut seems more accessible to “noodling.” Like, I just know I can pick this thing up and make sounds that I want to hear and likely even compose with. Also, I ain’t getting any younger, but I’m thirsty for something a bit more traditional that allows me an opportunity to learn, while expanding/solidifying my western music theory knowledge.

So, anyone of you all play bass? How about six-string? 5/7/8/9/nth string? What should I be looking to tackle first? any good YT vids or channels I should follow? Books? DVDs? General bass theory? Specific to six-string material? I am a sponge, soak me in your knowledge sensei

Please, though, don’t come at me with the “you need to buy a 4-string first” stuff. Too late, already bought a 6-string and I’ve already read plenty on both sides of this debate and am siding with the “learn on whatever you have or want to” gigachads.

Here is the full list of all the beginner essentials that I included with my order (if i’m missing something, other than a case which I am buying as soon as its back in stock but also I have no intention of traveling with this instrument anytime soon, feel free to hit me with those suggestions):

  • Ibanez GIO 6-Str Bass, Walnut Flat

  • Vox VX50BA 50W Bass Combo

  • Vox StompLab 2B Bass Multi-FX Pedal

  • Behringer Guitar-to-USB Interface

  • D’Addario 3" Bass Strap w/Pad - Black

  • D’Addario 10’ TS-TS, Classic Cable

  • D’Addario 20’ TS-TS, Classic Cable

  • Rok-It Acous/Elec Tubular Gtr Std

Automating sample slices/loop points

Renoise Forum - December 19, 2022 - 11:01

Hello,

I can’t figure out how to change sample slices/loop points in real-time to create a glitch effect. I’ve tried using a pitch-shifter VST and I’m close to what I want to do but not exactly.

I want to do this basically: Tutorial DJ (Trans Effect) Simple Creative Mix #3 - YouTube

I’m talking about automating and bringing these slice points closer (or farther) to each other in real-time:

Cannot load Redux ARM AU in Logic Pro

Renoise Forum - December 19, 2022 - 03:03

I am getting an error when loading Redux 1.3.0+ in Logic Pro on an M1 Mac. An error appears saying ’ An Audio Unit plug-in reported a problem which might cause the system to become unstable. Please quit and restart Logic Pro.’ and the plugin UI closes.

I can load the last Intel-only AU in Logic Pro fine (Logic running without Rosetta), and the ARM AU loads OK in every other host, eg. Reaper, Live.

I’ve tried deleting all the AU cache files and resetting all plugins in Logic. In the Logic plugin manager, Redux validates successfully.

Any idea what’s wrong or how to get more information? Thanks

Mapping Pitchbend to MIDI CC in Renoise 3.4.2

Renoise Forum - December 18, 2022 - 21:26

Hi Everyone,

I know this is a somewhat perennial question with Renoise, and also understand that specificity helps, so I’ll do my best. I have Renoise 3.4.2 and am using an ancient M-Audio Oxygen 8 (v1) as a MIDI controller running on Arch Linux using Jack Audio. I would like to be able to use the pitchwheel on the MIDI controller to record directly into the Automation Editor. To do so I believe I would have to MIDI map the pitch wheel to the *Instrument Midi Control’s pitch bend, however Midi map does not recognize the pitchwheel, I believe it only recognizes MIDI CC messages.

I’ve seen that the Duplex tool can map pitchbend to CC but I haven’t gotten it working – before I put too much time trying I thought it would be worth asking if Duplex works in 3.4? Is there another, maybe simpler, tool that may convert between midi pitch bend and CC?

Another option may be an independent tool that I could route the midi through using Jack that could convert the signals – anyone know of any?

I do have Qtractor and it works very nicely with Renoise and Jack Transport, and believe will allow me to record smooth pitch bends – but I’d rather have Renoise handle my sequencing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

„Find” option for used commands

Renoise Forum - December 17, 2022 - 18:54

It would be cool to have an option to find used commands in a pattern.
For example, you type G in a find input field and all commands (like G2C) in a pattern will be highlighted (with buttons Prev and Next).

Is there a list of what hardware supports Renoise?

Renoise Forum - December 16, 2022 - 23:56

Aside from desktops and laptops, what other hardware can run Renoise?

I think I’ve seen posts saying people have Renoise running on a Raspberry Pi 4.

I’m curious what other hardware (single-board computers, primarily) are known to handle Renoise (or should, based on their specs)?
