Automated panning and cancellation question

July 10, 2019 - 15:23

@brinemeister wrote:

I want to do symetrical stereo pulsing effects on certain instruments but I dont really understand what I should be careful of doing to avoid cancellation…

For example, If I had two perfect sine wave instruments both starting from center and moving outwards to hard left and hard right then back to center to do this kind of symetrical stereo pulsing thing would I have any cancellation issues? It will be fine on headphones, but what about on a two speaker setup, or two speakers and a subwoofer?

Ive heard people talking about inverting thing to avoid cancellation. Presumably if one of the two sine instruments mentioned above was inverted then it would cancel the other out. Is that right?

Also, is this kind of symetrical stereo pulsing thing going to be ‘mono-compatible’?

sorry, its a noob question

Renoise and Roland TR-08 Midi Automation (TUTORIAL)

July 10, 2019 - 05:44

@joebloggs wrote:

Hello
Ok so i had such a hard time figuring this out so im now posting this in the hope it will help someone else

Knowing how popular the Roland Boutique range are, im sure many will find this helpful!!!

So I wanted to be able to connect, trigger and automate many controls of the Roland TR-08.
I tried a program (VST) I found online but it was sooooo complicated and the support was just RIP lol so I kept trying with Renoise.

Now I have figured it out so hopfully you wont get the same headache I have, PLUS it WILL save you money on 3rd part VSTs or add-on.

What do you need?
Well you need a Roland TR-08 and Renoise

Whats the end goal?
To be able to connect to your TR-08 via MIDI
Trigger the TR-08 via MIDI from Renoise
Change and Automate the values of your TR-08 via MIDI from Renoise (Example Levels, Decays, Tones, Tunes)

Here is a little step guide to get you started:

Setting Up The TR-08 with Renoise
  1. Connect your TR-08 to your computers USB port then launch Renoise
  2. Select “Instrument Settings” Tab
  3. Click “Ext. MIDI”
  4. Select “Device” as “TR-08”
  5. Change “Channel” to “10”
  6. Check “Mode” is set to “ext.MIDI”
Pattern and Automation
  1. Use the keyboard to kind each instrument (example: Bass Drum, Snare…)
  2. Choose an empty Track
  3. Just make a quick beat / loop using those keys in step 1.
  4. Select “Track DSPs” tab
  5. Scroll to the “Meta” category
  6. Double click “*Instr. MIDI Control”
  7. Check “Linked Instruments” in “*Instr. MIDI Control” is set to “MIDI: TR-08 (Ch10)”
  8. Click the presets menu in “*Instr. MIDI Control” and select “Import Preset…”
  9. Select the “Roland TR-08.xrdp” file (Download Link)

You are now set to start automating the controls of the TR-08

PLEASE NOTE: Due to restriction of “*Instr. MIDI Control” I could not enter ALL instrument CCs
Some are missing for the CowBell - You can always edit the onces I have included to make room for all the cowbell setting if you need too
Here are the missing CCs for the Cowbell

Effect: Control No:
CB TUNE 86
CB DECAY 87

Hint:
If you have a different boutique then the TR-08 you can use the same process as I did with “*Instr. MIDI Control”
All you need is the Midi Implementation Chart from the Roland website for the boutique in question.
When you have it, look for the Control Change sections to see a full list of the Instruments and the CC Numbers

To some, this may have been very obvious but to me I searched everywhere for this and found nothing!
I even purchased a VST plugin to try and help but it just made things even more complicated lol

Hope you find it useful!

Renoise and TR-08 Editor Controller

July 10, 2019 - 01:00

@joebloggs wrote:

Hi all!
This kinda has 2 parts so please read all before posting replies ;0)

PART 1:

I can connect and control the TR-08 with Renoise but im finding that its limited to sending back only 1 parameter change per line…

Example: (For controlling the SnareDrum on my TR-08 via Renoise in the Pattern Editor)
SnareDrum - Lv: M0 [1D00] ~ [1D7F]
SnareDrum - Tone: M0 [1900] ~ [197F]

Say I had a snare hit at line 4 i would then have to add “M0” in the “Panning Colum” followed by 1D00 to 1D7F in the last colum to adjust the Level of the SnareDrum, But What if I want to change BOTH the “Level” and the “Tone”?
I tried expanding the last colum to display another 4 spaces to enter the 1900 to 197F but it does not effect the TR-08 - its as if it only recognizes one permater change at a time.

PART 2

Now this being said above, I did a search on google and found this little tool called “TR-08 Editor Controller”

Has anyone had any success with this VST and Renoise “TR-08 Editor Controller

What does it do?
Well if you have a Roland TR-08 this Standalone and VST can help automate many processes of the TR-08
However, since the instructions are mainly geared towards Ableton users im feeling like im bashing my head up a brick wall trying to set it up with Renoise

I have emailed the developer but from other messages i’ve seen on the net, the support is very poor.

Cheers in advance!

Opening a recent Renoise file with an old version of Renoise

July 10, 2019 - 00:51

@latarnik wrote:

I know it’s a long shot but is there any way I could open file saved from a recent version of Renoise (3.1.1) with an old version (2.7.2)? I’d like to open them on an old comp (PPC) I use as a DAW for other stuff.

Alternatively, could I export tracks to MIDI and open those with the old version of Renoise?

Edit: I also have 2.8.2 on another laptop, if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

So I’m recently getting back in the game, using Renoise for live purpouses and remapping buttons on my Key25, is there any way to make my buttons light up the way they do on Ableton Live for example? No dealbreaker if not, but it would be bloody awesome if it was possible.

Cabinet simulator, freezes in linux

July 8, 2019 - 10:44

@marbangens wrote:

Im on kxstudio (ubuntu 14.04) live iso installation.
So the Cabinet Simulator plug-in freezes Renoise,
sometimes from 0.5 sec to 10 sec freeze when I switch
cabinet type (first parameter).
This usually didn’t happen.
I my have some real-time setting wrong, maybe Renoise isn’t prioritized enough?
but I did just go with the default settings

This plugin is amazing cuz It uses almost no cpu and it dose so much to the sound

Top 10 Feature Request-List?

July 7, 2019 - 18:28

@LofiMat wrote:

How about a 10 Best of Request List for TakTik so he doesnt need to scroll & read thruogh the whole forums may to pickup some useful ideas that he could implment into Renoise 3.3 or .4?

But lets make it easy and simple here. One on point suggestion by every one in here and spezific suggestion:

(from me) SideChainCompression (no matter Audio/Midi or vst2 or 3 - what works just works)

I think TakTik might know best what to do and how to. What could be useful and wat doesnt make any sense. He’s the Dev (probally already coding the Update) so he may think 2 or 3 ideas could be implmented with ease and not much extra work for him to do, while others maybe not making any sense at all.

So NO CHAT and Drama in here - just your main ONE Suggestion Which could make sense.

If this works out like supposed I can than gather the TOP TEN Ideas and put them in here.

Dank

Bug selecting samples

July 6, 2019 - 20:14

@Zooby wrote:

Hi guys.

Has anyone noticed a bug where when you select a different sample from the sample list at the top right it plays the remainder of the last sample selected for a very short time before playing the current one? Kinda gets in the way of creativity a bit. I’ve noticed that if you load up a VST the bug sort of goes away.

Cheers

New Tool (3.1): Missing Plugins Info Simplified

It lists FX plugins only once with no track info listed either, for easier visual scanning.

How do you select all instruments and drag them out into a folder?

July 5, 2019 - 21:04

Is there a way to select all instruments in the instrument list and just drag them out of renoise into a folder?

Is there a way to do this with the sample list?

Otherwise I have to right click each individually and ‘save as’

OK, you've gotta give xStream a try!

July 5, 2019 - 19:36

@Neuro_No_Neuro wrote:

So, being me, I’ve got a some heavy demands when it comes to granular sorts of effects in Renoise. I was asking for a tool that’d give me randomized start/end times to a sample. Well, there is ONE tool here that will do that (as far as I’m aware).

xStream

Now, many of you have probably already read that I am not a coder. I’m still not. There’s a preset in xStream that does a semi-granular sort of pattern effect (or song, if you want it to) process. And it has user-controllable sliders. And you can save it as a setting. The neat thing is it can keep running and changing subtly over the course of playback. And if you stop the process and add in another FX lane, you can add in even more stuff to randomly get adjusted (like 0Rxy stuff for little buzzes). Even if you don’t know Lua (like me), you can still adjust a TON of stuff and get some really nice patterns and soundbeds. Thanks @danoise for this device and the advice to use it and find the arg sliders!

Here’s a pic of a set of chords that I made after coming up with a light 'n breezy granular-esque pattern using the granular preset:

I used a simple sine-wave piano sound, utilized the Boite Diabolique chord generator, and all the while, xStream is providing a never-ending stream of randomized values to turn the sounds on/off, pan/delay/volume (gate) change the pattern. The only thing missing is a random value generator for sample/gate length (which would ultimately bring it to creating that type of granular micro-looper idea I’ve been begging for

To use this took very little effort and provides a lot of options. If you know how to program in Lua, you can definitely grab a ton more out of it!
