Best portable battery powered drum machine for finger drumming?

July 30, 2019 - 20:45

@Garrett_Wang wrote:

last time I went travelling a long time ago I took a Boss dr670 with me.
The sounds were cheesey stadium rock but the pads were really sensitive and it was great for finger drumming. Nice, I still enjoyed it.

Now I am searching for something thats slightly better sounding but still battery powered, small, portable and with nice sensitive pads and at a reasonable price.

Please recommend something to me…unfortunately it seems like these small battery powered drum machines just stopped getting made. Its like the small battery powered drum machines market just stopped and stayed stuck in the past focussed on stadium rock accoustic kits only. Also its shocking and ridiculous the prices people are asking for these old school machines. Surely there is something new and better?
Is it the end for these kinds of machines?
this is sad, anyone know something better?

heres my ideas so far from best to worst:

TOO EXPENSIVE

CASIO XWPD1:

AKAI XR20:

BOSS DR880

BOSS DR770

COMPARITIVELY SHITTY (BUT SENSITIVE FINGER DRUMMABLE PADS)
[a little shitty, but still too expensive!..stadium rock, phil collins]

BOSS DR670

YAMAHA RY20

ALESIS SR16

New copyright law to violate and destroy sample-based artistry?

July 30, 2019 - 14:09

@Garrett_Wang wrote:

"German electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk have won a long-running copyright battle over a two-second clip of their 1977 track Metal On Metal…
The European Court of Justice ruled that musicians cannot “sample” other artists’ records without permission…
The ECJ decision could have huge implications for the music industry…
Monday’s ruling means that any reproduction of a sound sample taken from an existing recording must be authorised by the original producer…
But the ECJ also ruled that use of a modified sample that was unrecognisable from the original could be used without permission."

Does this mean that tracks using even just a snare, just a hihat, just a tambourine must now be burnt on a pile of ‘illegal songs’?

Or that all breakbeat samples must now have too much flanger on them or something so that they are ‘unrecognizable’…when does a single hit snare sound become unrecognizable…this shit is annoying.

Personally I think Kraftwerk really sucks anyway…

later on they will complain that synthesized sounds are ‘too powerful’ and cause violence or some bullshit like that…first, make samples illegal…after that any song using drum machines will be ‘gangster’ or ‘drug related’.

Should we make classical music like ‘Wagner’ illegal? As it is known that he supported Hitler?
That hitler stuff is pretty gangster if you ask me…maybe should make Wagner illegal?

Unresponsive UI troubleshooting help

July 28, 2019 - 20:02

@jmarcels wrote:

Hi there,

I’ve recently reinstalled the Renoise Demo after getting my Macbook fixed and I’ve noticed an issue that I didnt encounter before the reinstall - the UI is very unresponsive. The major area I notice this in is the main tracker view - scrolling the pattern is very laggy and was definitely not like this before. The other thing unusual that I noticed was during first startup, two crashes happening during the scanning of two plugins, plus another two crashes after deleting my config files and having it rescan - this time being a different plugin. I attribute this to the plugins but i thought it was worth mentioning. I have followed the advice in this post, and these were my results: I restarted renoise and had it crash twice on plugin scan (seer above), then once it loaded on the third time and interface was not laggy, it was back to normal - I then went into fullscreen, and the lag started. Exited fullscreen and the lag persisted. Only a restart helped.
I’m using Renoise 3.1 64bit, on MacOS v10.14.5.

Could anyone help me troubleshoot this? I’d usually attribute such lag to my laptop’s retina screen but as I have used Renoise before on this machine I know that it has worked just fine.

Any ideas on what this may be? Many thanks!

Automation: Envelope vs Note effect. Priority

July 27, 2019 - 19:25

@lilith wrote:

Maybe I just don’t understand the principal. I can do automation via the automation lane or via track effect commands. The automation lane seems to have priority over track effects.

Is there any reason why there are no automation lanes generated when using track effects commands and vice versa?

How to 'key-scale-rate' and 'key-scale-level' for single cycle sample based instruments?

July 26, 2019 - 14:57

@Garrett_Wang wrote:

I want to make my instruments made from looped single-cycle-waveform samples sound a bit better and more pro…reading through the adlibtracker manual i found out that to set up a little bit more pro-sounding instrument I should use ‘key scale rate’ (attack and decay becomes shorter as pitch inscreases) and ‘key scale level’ (volume decreases as pitch increases). How would I achieve this in renoise?

KEY SCALE
When set, makes the sound shorter at higher frequencies. With normal musical instruments, the attack and decay rate becomes faster as the pitch increases. The key scale rate controls simulation of this effect.

KEY SCALE LEVEL
When set, makes the sound softer at higher frequencies. With musical instruments, volume decreases as pitch increases. Level key scaling values are used to simulate this effect. If any (not zero), the diminishing factor can be 1.5 dB/octave, 3.0 dB/octave, or 6.0 dB/octave.

Pattern Editor Keyboard/Mouse Select Cell

July 26, 2019 - 00:00

@natraj wrote:

Hi!

I am a bit confused. Based on what I am used to I would expect that left-clicking (button down, button up) into a cell will move the edit cursor into that cell, and drawing a selection would work like button down, move to different cell, then button up.

The latter works as expected. But a single click will only select a single cell without moving the edit cursor there.

I found a preferences option that says “Single click to set cursor in edit mode”. That makes the edit cursor move into the column that I have clicked, but not in the right line.

Is there an option to simply single-click a cell and move the edit cursor to it?

[Doofer] FuzzleBuerste - kind of fuzz like distortion

July 25, 2019 - 19:49

@OopsIFly wrote:

Hi I see people started posting Doofer presets here - nice thing. I want to share one I made a while ago.

When the normal distortion isn’t gritty enough for you, this one can have much more character…

It is kind of complex distortion effect, that can sound similar to the classic “Fuzz” type distortion, with asymetric distortion. It can give interesting results on almost any kind of sound…even a simple sine wave lick can become a living being using this little beast…

Dials are:

Drive - main (asym) distortion intensity
Sat - additional (symmetrical) saturation
FLT - a lowpass filter that will reduce the highs and bring in some character when dialed in
Edge - low value = smoother sound, high value = gritty sound
DC - when at 50%, the distortion is symmetrical - dial lower or higher to introduce a DC shift up/down
Uber - when at 50%, sound is neutral - dial lower to put disto focus on bass, dial above 50% to put focus on highs

Though it does use a DC shift, it will also highpass the sound to remove it afterwards. Some peaks might get a bit stronger by the shift, so use Sat or take special care…

Have fun with this little beast!

[Doofer] Bitcrush Lowpass Filter

July 25, 2019 - 18:45

@EETTEE wrote:

A really popular effect where as a lowpass filter is applied to the sound a bitcrusher with a changing rate is dialed in. When Cutoff is at 100 nothing is being done to a sound except for what an 8n Chebyshev lowpass filter does at 20 khz (pretty much nothing). So unlike the highpass variation of this plugin I posted earlier, it’s safe to let this one chill out on a bass.

Just automate the cutoff from 100 to 0 in a short ramp and you’ve got a really cool effect to see a sound off. This is a hot one bois

Anyone know where to get the casio millenium falcon cheap?

July 25, 2019 - 17:30

@Garrett_Wang wrote:

I heard heard the casio XW-PD1 aka ‘millenium falcon’ was seen on German online shops for under 50 euros?!

I would like to get hold of one at that price but dont speak german, cant locate.
If any one knows where they are please put a link. thanks for your time

these look pretty fun and battery powered for the portable backpacker finger drumming.
at that price I would definitley buy…it actually looks pretty fun has synths and sampling.
…all the other battery powered and finger drummable things are so overpriced and quite shitty to be honest, stuff like boss dr880…mpc500…damn they are expensive for what they do.
