Optimal/Semi-optimal Locations of Library etc. Folders

Renoise Forum - June 3, 2021 - 04:25

Hi, I’d like some insight/thoughts/guidance concerning Renoise-related folders, for long-term usage. That is, for preservation if I have to update/reinstall Renoise and so on. And just in general, for organization, in terms of storing presets/songs/tool settings/etc. long term.

If someone could take a decent look at this, it would be a lot of help for me. I’ve read the manual, concerning presets/libraries and so on. But that didn’t seem sufficient. At least as a non-Renoise OG. So, please help with where I should put this stuff.

What is my folder structure?
-I’m a Mac user and all synths/DAWS/plugins are installed in their default locations, on the internal drive.

-At the root of external drive is a folder called “Production”

-Subfolders of “Production” include:
a) “Samples”
*This is the master folder of samples, to be used by Renoise, other DAWs, hardware samplers, whatever.

b) “Work”
*This includes stuff created in other DAWs but not currently Renoise, though perhaps I should change that. Hopefully this thread will provide relevant insight.

c) “Content”
*This is the main topic of this thread. The function of this folder is basically “preset/library location for plugins and DAWs.” If I update a plugin or DAW, or if my computer is stolen or whatever…I should be able to regain access to my third party soundbanks for plugins, my DAW templates, third party tools (and their settings), and just in general the additional “stuff” for plugins/DAWs.

*The subfolders of “Content” would depend on the situation. For example:

-A “TAL” subfolder would just be patches, as that’s the only…additional stuff for TAL plugins. In such cases, aliases/symlinks/etc. can optionally be used. But regardless, this is the eternal, long-term master location for the patches.

-A “Native Instruments” subfolder would be the (in NI terminology) “Content Location.” That is, the additional stuff that adds functionality to NI products.

-A “Renoise” subfolder would be to store Renoise stuff that may or may not get deleted when I update Renoise. Basically, stuff that is currently in:
~/Documents/Renoise/User Library
&
~/Documents/Renoise/Installed Libraries

As of now, in the User Library, there are items stored in subfolders called “Effect Presets,” “Instruments” & “Songs.” And within “Songs” are “In Progress,” “Finished” and even “Templates” (which implies past and potentially future templates which I might want to use again).

And installing the “Extras” in Renoise Backstage seems to have created that “Installed Libraries” folder.

What do I want to achieve?

I would like to move Renoise-related folders/subfolders within the context of:

  1. the aforementioned folder structure (and its goals)
    &
  2. any potential technical limitations

I’m open to additional suggestions as well.
Thanks to whoever read through that

Redux Question about MIDI import

Renoise Forum - June 2, 2021 - 23:06

I’m new here.
I’ve been considering buying the Redux plug-in. I’ve downloaded the demo version to try.
There doesn’t appear to be a way to import raw MIDI data. Even drag and drop doesn’t seem to work. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to import MIDI. It would be a lot easier to transfer songs I’ve already started if I didn’t have to start over and input note by note.I would like to know the answer before I buy because it’s an important feature to me.

Thanks. Any feedback is appreciated…

How to change the default length of a pattern (for ALL songs, not just your current song)?

Renoise Forum - June 2, 2021 - 17:43

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I’ve wanted to know this practically since I bought Renoise. In my songs, I like my patterns to be 128 lines, instead of the default of 64. This means every time I start a new song, I have to change the number of lines in the initial pattern to 128, then go into “Song Options” and change “Default Pattern Length” to 128. I’d like to be able to change the pattern length of every new song by default to 128, but so far, I haven’t seen an option to do so in Renoise. Is there such an option or setting that allows me to do this?

If not, it’s no big deal. Changing the pattern length for every new song is just a bit tedious, that’s all.

WIP: Ice Queen SID Remix

Renoise Forum - June 2, 2021 - 08:29

Hello,

i"ve done a very rough recreation of the Song “Ice Queen”. It took me hours of reverse engeniering the structure and notes.
i havent used any tools like sid2midi or similiar, just my ears.
Instruments are provided by Arturia Analog Lab 5 and rendered down to norrmal samples.
The DAW Im using is Renoise. Well, since the basic structure and melody line has been created im running a little bit out of ideas how to procced now, since it is obvious very short. The speed of the song is quiete high (150 bpm) and not easy though. Do you have an idea how to lenght this a bit and spice it up with some more content? Its not yet balanced very well and the mastering steps are missing, but i believe you get the point

My new album, created in Renoise during 8 years (IDM, MS-DOS games, classic electronic music)

Renoise Forum - June 1, 2021 - 20:36
smarturl.it Lunar Holmen - Kreissack

Through that link you can listen via any streaming service of your choice. This is a beast of an album; One hour of music, with the idea that there has to be something new coming at the listener at all times. I was heavily inspired by classic electronic music (Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk), more modern electronica/idm (Röyksopp, Boards of Canada) and also the MS-DOS games of my youth. It’s all very experimental.

Hope you have a listen and enjoy! All comments welcome too!

Thanks,
JouluPam

Babar Theme Song

Renoise Forum - June 1, 2021 - 14:51

Hey guys

So this track was originally meant to be the outro to another song that i was working on. But, i just decided to make it is own song.

So in my earlier childhood in the late 00s to early 2010s, when me and my family were on pretty hard times, up until 2016. There was this kids channel on antenna TV that i used to watch, it actually ceased airing year a couple months ago.

It was called “Qubo”; and it aired for 2006 - 2021, for me, the period where i was watching was about 2010 - 2014, around that time period, give or take.

And Qubo, was really one of the things that i really looked forward to when i came home from school. I remember i used to watch it heavily throughout those earlier years.

So this song is basically just a remix or flip of a theme song of a show that used to air own the channel. That theme song being Babar, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG3y04Xc2Uw

Matter of fact, it used to air on Qubo’s nighttime block, “Qubo : Night Owl”

That was one of the shows that came on that block, in the event that i was up that late.

So that’s pretty much the sort of inspiration for this track.

As always, if you have any feedback, general composition, mixing, things of that nature, feel free to speak your mind,

Thanks for reading and taking the time to listen and i hope you enjoy.

Fewer parameters for VST3 than VST2

Renoise Forum - June 1, 2021 - 11:21

I’ve made a plugin called Oversample that allows you to quickly set a parameter of a VST effect device to a specific value (used for turning “Oversample”, “High Quality”, etc., on and off).

This plugin therefore needs to enumerate all devices and their parameters in a song. When enumerating the parameters of VST2 devices, I get the full list of parameters, but when doing the same for VST3 devices, some parameters are missing. For the plugin Fabfilter Pro-C 2, the parameters start to differ at index 41. See the table below:

Index VST2 Parameter VST3 Parameter 1 Style Style 2 Threshold Threshold 3 Ratio Ratio 4 Knee Knee 5 Range Range 6 Attack Attack 7 Release Release 8 Auto Release Auto Release 9 Lookahead Lookahead 10 Hold Hold 11 Wet Gain Wet Gain 12 Wet Pan Wet Pan 13 Dry Gain Dry Gain 14 Dry Pan Dry Pan 15 Auto Gain Auto Gain 16 Side Chain Expert Mode Side Chain Expert Mode 17 Side Chain Input Side Chain Input 18 Side Chain Level Side Chain Level 19 Stereo Link Stereo Link 20 Stereo Link Mode Stereo Link Mode 21 Side Chain Low Enabled Side Chain Low Enabled 22 Side Chain Low Frequency Side Chain Low Frequency 23 Side Chain Low Slope Side Chain Low Slope 24 Side Chain Mid Auto Side Chain Mid Auto 25 Side Chain Mid Enabled Side Chain Mid Enabled 26 Side Chain Mid Frequency Side Chain Mid Frequency 27 Side Chain Mid Gain Side Chain Mid Gain 28 Side Chain Mid Q Side Chain Mid Q 29 Side Chain Mid Shape Side Chain Mid Shape 30 Side Chain High Enabled Side Chain High Enabled 31 Side Chain High Frequency Side Chain High Frequency 32 Side Chain High Slope Side Chain High Slope 33 Audition Side Chain Audition Side Chain 34 Audition Triggering Audition Triggering 35 Mix Mix 36 Input Level Input Level 37 Input Pan Input Pan 38 Output Level Output Level 39 Output Pan Output Pan 40 Bypass Bypass 41 Midi State Oversampling 42 Lookahead Enabled 43 Midi State 44 Meter Scale 45 Display Enabled 46 Knee Display Enabled

The (essential part of the) loop enumerating the parameters looks like this:

local parameters = {} for p = 1, table.getn(device.parameters) do local parameter = device:parameter(p) parameters[p] = parameter.name end

Does anyone have an idea why the parameter list is different between VST2 and VST3 versions of the same plugin?

Plugins not displaying properly

Renoise Forum - June 1, 2021 - 10:50

Plugins are all scaled way small, and this does seem to be the inverse of the UI scale setting. Sadly, setting my global UI scaling to 100% is not an option. I’ll explain:

So there was a solution accepted here in this thread: Plugins not displaying properly

Sadly this solution will not work for me since using 100% UI scaling on my built-in HiDPI display makes everything else far too tiny to use. I only have this one display.

Is there another possible solution, please? Super unfortunately, this is preventing me from using Renoise as my primary DAW. I can pretty much only use it for sample slicing and patterning right now. I would love for this to work again. At least now the problem is more consistently happening. Most especially with Vital.audio plugin and with Roland’s plugins.

Thank you!!

An (old) newcomer : questions about live performance

Renoise Forum - May 31, 2021 - 15:30

Hi,

I bought renoise years ago, and life kept me away from making music during this time. Now I want to do it again, and I have questions about live performance :

in the past, there was some plugins for this, now it seems they disappeared : are they included in the latest version of renoise, or maybe it was just abandonned ?

I plan to use it with a mpc clone and launchpad. Is renoise ready for live performance, or should I buy Bitwig ?

thank you for your help.

Pattern insertion and deletion are slow when pressing buttons

Renoise Forum - May 31, 2021 - 12:44

When using the + and - buttons to insert a new pattern into the matrix, for sufficiently complex tracks, it can take several seconds of a completely locked Renoise before anything happens.

The weird thing is that using the shortcut keys to do the same operations make them complete without any waiting time at all. Why would using the buttons to trigger the same action as the hotkeys cause such a massive slowdown and locking of the Renoise UI?

Script tool to map midi to groove value(s)

Renoise Forum - May 30, 2021 - 15:11

Hi,

Before I start trying to script a tool, is it possible to use lua for mapping a midi cc to the groove settings?

Is it even possible to map midi to sliders in tools? I tried to midi map the slider in the tool below.

https://www.renoise.com/tools/groove-control

But when I open any tool, and hit midi map, the sliders on my tools are not available for mapping.

I hope someone can help me out.

How to load Kontakt Libraries into Renoise?

Renoise Forum - May 29, 2021 - 21:07

So I’m unable to get the VSTi plugin Bassynth to work with my copy of renoise. Bassynth is correctly downloaded into the Kontakt library and works fine independently of renoise. However, I would like to use both of them in conjunction. When I search under plugins in renoise it displays my other plugins that work fine, but when I navigate directly towards the Kontakt library or Bassynth it shows my folders are blank.

When I search for Bassynth via the file explorer on Windows 10, it shows an .nki extension. I tried to convert it with Awave, but my version of Kontakt was too new.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this issue. Thanks.

Sidechain HPF bus comp master

Renoise Forum - May 29, 2021 - 14:09

Hi troops, I’m not in front of my laptop so just trying to visualise how to do something.

In the past (in other DAWs), I used to sidechain a master bus compressor using the main signal through a HPF so that low frequencies don’t trigger it. Just sounded a lot better that way to my ears

In Renoise, am I right in thinking this could be achieved using the signal follower (with HPF enabled) set to affect ‘active / bypassed’ → bus compressor in a simple signal chain?

I’m using Linux and currently just have Airwindows Recurve and Airwindows Safety Clipper on the master out.

"Master/Slave" -> "Primary/Secondary" or "Server/Client"

Renoise Forum - May 28, 2021 - 02:07

Recently it has come to the attention of many technologists that the word “master” is problematic in nearly all contexts, and most especially when it stands next to the word “slave”

While it may seem pedantic to some, this is important especially for Renoise, not only for racial equality, but also in the interest of UI/UX clarity and being as intuitive as possible, wherever possible.

In many cases, these words have been changed to Primary and Secondary, which seem more descriptive of the relationship and tend to not to conjure images of whips/chains in people’s minds. Another term I’ve seen used for directional synchronizations is Source and Client. In the case of Renoise’s use, it may be even clearer to say Sender and Receiver, as this directional data relationship is somewhat unclear in the places it appears anyhow, in spite of their use in MIDI-specific contexts.

(I, for one, had a difficult time understanding which one is sending the MIDI clock to whom and what direction the data is flowing at all, having to discover through trial and error. I still have to go through this if it’s been more than a week since last using Renoise.)

While these words are still “standard” in terms of MIDI, software dev as a whole has changed to Primary/Secondary or Client/Server. MIDI itself is changing to keep up with the times, specifically to allow two-way communication and I’m confident that when MIDI 2.0 is finally released “master/slave” will be all but officially deprecated terminology. It just doesn’t seem like a relationship we want to highlight anymore, right? …Many people are working to change the terms “mastering” and “master track”, too, for the same reasons. No reason to sound like a racist in 2021

Thank you for considering this important social and usability issue!

Found a bug with the Phrase Editor

Renoise Forum - May 27, 2021 - 22:47

Seems there’s a bug in the phrase editor when playing notes with the computer keyboard. I programmed a chord with it for playing it by pressing one single note. If i’m on the main pattern editor, then press a note, the chord plays as expected. But when i now switch to the phrase editor tab, the chord doesn’t play as expected, it plays just one single note. Switching back to the main pattern editor and play a note, the chord plays again as expected. Playing notes on a MIDI keyboard or playing notes with the mouse on the virtual keyboard in the phrase editor works fine in all situations. This just happens when playing notes with the computer keyboard.
Thanks.

Renoise PC version 3.3.2, 64 bit (i don’t know if this also happens with the Mac version)

Steps to reproduce:
1.) load a sample or a VST instrument
2.) program a chord in the phrase editor
3.) press a note on the computer keyboard, just one note plays
4.) press a note on the virtual keyboard on the bottom with the mouse, the whole chord plays as expected
5.) press a note on the MIDI keyboard, the whole chord plays as expected
6.) switch to the main pattern sequencer
7.) play a note on the computer keyboard, the whole chord plays as expected
8.) switch back to the phrase editor
9.) play a note on the computer keyboard, just one single note plays
