Cannot resize reajs vst windows (works in reaper and bitwig)

Renoise Forum - January 16, 2022 - 12:48

The reajs vst window cannot be resized, which makes it unusable for a lot of jsfx… is there a way ?
This is vst2 64bit, part of the reaper reaplugs vst suite. In bitwig and reaper the resize works.

Favorite Non-Native Filter

Renoise Forum - January 16, 2022 - 05:37

What’s your go-to filter that’s not Native to Renoise? Audio Damage’s Filterstation is looking pretty slick to me atm

Right Click>Instrument Properties>Macro

Renoise Forum - January 15, 2022 - 21:19

It’s kind of a tease having these Macros here and not be able to record a right click. VSTI pitch bend, Mod Wheel, Aftertouch, and other basic controls would work here as well. Having a right click function for Phrases couldn’t hurt here either.

Save All Instruments As:Tool Idea

Renoise Forum - January 15, 2022 - 15:24

Not sure if it’s possible but it’d be handy to have something that’d save all your instruments/.xnri for you in a project folder or something, it’d streamline the workflow a bit more for sure. Something similar for Phrases would also be nifty. I wouldn’t mind dabbling in coding a bit, I have no idea where to start though

New tool (3.3.2): Piano Roll Studio v1.0 build 264 (January 2022)

Renoise Forum - January 15, 2022 - 00:00
1. What is the “Piano Roll Studio” or “PRS”? Concept

Completely programmed from scratch, the Piano Roll Studio, also known as PRS is a «customizable window tool» with multiple viewing and editing capabilities, focused on the extensive mouse use, exclusive to the DAW Renoise (64 bit, v3.3.2). PRS is a «classical piano roll» that concentrates its potential in controlling 7 important viewing and editing branches in parallel with Renoise:

  1. Note monitoring. The PRS allows you to view a complete Pattern-Track with differentiation of Note Columns or an entire Pattern (all existing Note Tracks) to visually understand the composition, using the track colors.
  2. Identification and location of notes and effect parameters. Visually, it is possible to easily jump between the Pattern Editor of Renoise and the Note Editor of the Piano Roll Studio or vice versa, to locate notes and parameters, without getting lost along the way.
  3. Complete Note Editor. PRS allows you to edit Note Blocks directly and quickly, individually or in groups, with simple or complex editing operations. Click, drag, stretch, shorten, transpose, translate, everything is possible… even preview notes or chords directly.
  4. Complete Effects Parameter Editor. PRS allows you to load, insert or edit any type of effect parameter, in the Volume, Pan, Delay, Sample Effects sub-columns or the Effects columns of the tracks. The Parameters Editor (lower panel) is directly linked to the Note Editor (upper Grid) with full correspondence between both. It even allows you to easily create or edit curves with Click and drag.
  5. Building and editing of chords through the Piano. PRS works extensively with chords, offering 60 different chords, with a customizable chord groove. Insert or edit chords as if you were only inserting a single note!
  6. Transposition Scales for note editing. PRS allows you to load and display any Transposition Scale of the instrument for the 10 octaves of the piano, working with both individual notes and chords.
  7. Magnificent control with a variety of peripherals. The editing and operation of the Piano Roll Studio can be controlled with an alphanumeric keyboard + mouse, with a MIDI controller + mouse, with an alphanumeric keyboard + MIDI controller + mouse. Additionally, the supported mouse (and its software) can use «macros» and «keystroke mapping» to increase direct control.

Piano Roll Studio. Notes Editing Mode

The Piano Roll Studio offers a classic design, well ordered, easy to understand and control taking into account its complexity, fully customizable «on the fly», with a familiar panel layout, with the playback of the progress of the song horizontally, thought to interfere as little as possible due to its floating window character. Above is a Top Control Bar, below is a ruler with markers. In the middle area, on the left, is the upright piano, accompanied by the right Grid to display and edit the Note Blocks. At the bottom is the Parameter Editor panel, accompanied by a left panel to navigate between Notes and Effects Columns and to be able to switch between parameters. PRS prioritizes the importance of using effect parameters, moving away from possible simple piano roll layouts, which are little more than note editors. The Parameter Editor is a key point of the program.

PRS is probably the best note and parameter editor ever built as a comprehensive external tool for Renoise, taking advantage of and making the most of the capabilities of its API. The software, and more importantly, respects the peculiarities of Renoise while being very minimally invasive. A piano roll for Renoise should never be conceived as a separate program. According to its creator, ulneiz, the Piano Roll Studio has been programmed largely to be able to obtain and use the Parameter Editor (that lower panel of the tool window).

The Piano Roll Studio gathers a large number of requests or wishes from a multitude of Renoise users in recent years who have always wanted a «classic» piano roll effective to use as a support in conjunction with Renoise to solve your most complex compositions. At the same time, its design and features are clear proof of ulneiz thinking. Strongly designed for use with the mouse, almost 95% of the Piano Roll Studio window surface can be interacted with by the mouse pointer (click and wheel).

Piano Roll Studio. An original tool for Renoise.

This new software, programmed from scratch and fully tested by ulneiz, has been in private development for more than 13 months, in parallel and coexisting with the development or maintenance of other tools, before finishing the first release version, version 1.0. The Piano Roll Studio brings great value and boost to Renoise and it turns out to be a great complement that also covers some shortcomings that this DAW has, more oriented to control using keyboard commands.

If you as a composer are looking for a serious piano roll to use alongside Renoise, the Piano Roll Studio is the perfect candidate. Combine both worlds (tracker + piano roll) to improve your workflow!

2. Two Versions: Demo & Full Version. Get the Full Version of Piano Roll Studio

The PRS program is distributed in 64-bit XRNX format through a «Demo Version», free of charge, so that any user can test it. PRS is also available as a «Full Version», which requires a Custom User License.

  • Piano Roll Studio, Demo Version. The demo version has exactly the same functionalities as the full version, but with limited trial time and a floating counter window. That is, it is not a shortened version but it is for a limited time. You will be able to test all its features, but it will only take a few minutes to do so. Once the stipulated time has elapsed, the tool will lock up. If you want to continue using the tool, get the Full Version.
  • Piano Roll Studio, Full Version. The Demo Version uses the same installation package as the Full Version, but the Full Version is 100% functional, with no limitations. The Full Version of Piano Roll Studio only requires a Custom Use License that is installed manually. If you are interested, please contact the author «ulneiz» to obtain your Custom User License.

Contact with “ulneiz” to get de Full Version of Piano Roll Studio: Go to https://forums.renoise.com/ & search «ulneiz» user (to contact you much be registered inside the forums).

3. Download the Piano Roll Studio (Demo Version) and User’s Manual

Please, if you are interested in the PRS, read the User’s Manual. It is available in the Spanish language and translated into English language. Practically all the details are explained inside of the User’s Manual. The User’s Manual is also accessible from the tool (in the tool’s installation package).

Cantabile Performer...For FREEEeeeeeee!>>>

Renoise Forum - January 14, 2022 - 19:11

Not to get too excited…This is NOT for a new 64bit freebie or cracked or whatever…

ONLY interested for the oldskools who still do 32bitz (like me)…

You see, Cantabile was FREEWARE to version 1.1…Still grabbable…

Only crash TWICE for me on initial plug scan of 710 plugs then all clear sailing…Still way better than some DAWs out there NOW & this from 2006…

Not have near the features of later versions BUTT HAY! It allows record of audio or MIDI & also load a MIDI to play & many other ‘meat-potatoes’ operations…

I actually prefer its small GUI of the time…

New dreampop/'gaze/ambient release

Renoise Forum - January 14, 2022 - 11:20

https://www.youtube.com/embed/76i8gOMo4nk

Just released this ambient dreampop collaboration with an amazing vocalist who does lots of her own production too. We even got hooked up with Chris Bigg (who worked on 4AD album covers as part of v23) for our cover art, it’s loosely in that universe

A good deal of the production like all of the beats, the rhythmic synthesizer lines etc were made in Renoise in this track–it stays in my workflow no matter what music I’m doing these days.

Please add option to disable client side decorations

Renoise Forum - January 14, 2022 - 10:51

Would it be possible to have an option to disable client side decorations (the close, maximize buttons etc. that renoise draws)? Unfortunately my Window manager doesn’t want to put window decorations on a window that already has client side decorations, even though the Window manager decorations would provide much more control over the Window than the client side ones.

Time signature changes in Jack Transport confuses Renoise

Renoise Forum - January 14, 2022 - 10:45

I stumbled onto a possible bug (or maybe working as intended, but in that case it maybe needs a rethink)
I sync Renoise to Ardour with Jack Transport, and was working on a song that has a part with where the 4/4 is broken up with 3/4 measures here and there. I edited in the time signature changes in Ardours time signature editor, but when I try to play it back in sync Renoise seems to get confused with the changing time signatures, every time the time signature changes in Ardour, the Renoise playback jumps to a different spot in the song, almost as if the time signature changes makes it recalculate position as if the entire song was in the new time signature.
My workaround was to remove the time signature changes in Ardour, but then it gets less convenient to edit the audio since measures in the editing grid doesn’t line up with actual measures in the audio.
Might there be some issues with the Jack Transport sync and changing time signatures?

H8 Tracker 1.90 Beta - Test Tune, DL Links, Other>>>

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2022 - 14:26

Well just finished a short test tune in H8 Tracker 1.90 beta which is tracker that came out in 2001…

Probably many here have not even heard of it…I’m sure a few have though…

I find this tracker good for short tunes or concepts exploration is fast workflow but you must be man enough to tolerate a few pitfalls & a beta environment…

The reward is a portable tracker that is compact & free of garbage features with automation curves which are the FOREFRONT of the tracker…

Here’s tune I uploaded last nite worked on it on-off during past week…NOTE…There was no crackles on any playback 'till I started recording the output of it even though it just uses directsound…I’ll have to try some different recorders to try & solve…

alonetone.com Girl Cheese Sandwich

A track by TalkOrBell

There is NO CHEATING using H8Tracker…QWERTY only & when I am doing QWERTY only I use a method called tactical composing…

Since this was coded by a 19 year-old Polish kid I am surprised it was not QWERZ format…Kid had ingenious ideas too bad it did not go further…

Images here-

If you want to challenge yourself to make a tune on a 20 year-old tracker with LIMITATION & CONSTRICTION yet refreshing simplicity & actually quite stylish you can DL here…NOTE…It’s just a 329 KB ARCHIVE! It includes TRACKER, 3 GUI-Less plugs & ONE demo tune!..LOL!..TIGHT CODING!

OR

http://www.maz-sound.de/archives/h8t190.zip

This would make a great ‘challenge tracker’ for a contest of sorts…

It loads WAVs (not all) XIs & the rest is VSTi-VST only quality plugs work if you have any questions post them on alonetone under my test tune in comments…

ALSO…I have a large old GUI-Less plug collection links still good but don’t wait…95% of these will work 100% in H8 Tracker…My next tune I plan on a GUI-Less compo…

Midi - renoise as device?

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2022 - 12:29

Maybe this is already existing functionality, but I ask anyway.

Is it possible to have renoise published as a midi-out device? So that other applications can discover renoise as if it was for example the Microsoft GS Wave…

The next step is ofcourse the possibility inside renoise to use this as an input, in the same was as an external keyboard.

It would make my life easier, the alternative is going down the virtual-midi-ports-darkness.

Windows 10 upgrade to Windows 11. Experience with Renoise?

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2022 - 11:41

Has anyone upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 while keeping Windows 11 files (documents, programs …)?

How about your experience with Renoise? Does it work the same? Works better? Does it work worse?

I understand that Renoise has “special treatment” with “the windows” of the Windows 10. Maybe in Windows 11 it works better?

I’m talking about loading dropdown menus, loading VST-VSTi plugins, loading LUA tools and these things …

Can you tell your experience here?

About the Log.txt file and the performance to start/close

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2022 - 11:35

I am on Windows 10, installed on a very fast M.2 drive (where Renoise is installed as well).

I just noticed a strange behavior from Renoise apparently related to the writing of the Log.txt file, located in the folder:

C:\Users\MY_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Renoise\V3.3.2\Log.txt

Log.txt is a file that grows in size each time Renoise is used (both when starting and closing).

What happen?
  1. If the Log.txt file is only a few kilobytes, Renoise appears to start up faster and log out faster as well.

  2. If the Log.txt file is large in kilobytes, about 400 KB or more, Renoise appears to start significantly slower and also to close significantly slower, 2 or 3 seconds slower. Not only that, but it seems to affect the loading of certain tools as well. If the initial load of a window tool typically takes 0.5 seconds, it could now take 3 seconds or more.

Has anyone been able to experience a similar situation with this case?

Shouldn’t this file be regenerated every time it gets too big?

Or maybe save multiple files log_1.txt, log_2.txt … so that these are not too large and that they do not affect the performance of Renoise?

I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here anyway. However, after trying many more things with no success, when I closed Renoise and deleted the Log.txt file (knowing that Renoise regenerates it), the next Renoise run was back to normal, and the tools already load quickly.

Adjust sample rate to arbitrary value

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2022 - 09:04

Aliasing is a very useful tool for sound design.

I’d love to be able to adjust the sample rate of a sample to any value like you could do on many hardware samplers and not just 44.1k, 32k, 22.05k …
Sometimes 28643Hz is just right to get rid of nasty top end and replace it with some tasty aliasing

Sample rate reduction vsts are not really a substitute, as they cannot account for the change in sound when samples are pitched.

Choosing the anti-aliasing filter characteristics before conversion would be the cherry on top, but not that important.

•••Zensphere's Renoise Tutorials•••

Renoise Forum - January 12, 2022 - 22:08

Heyo!

I am intending to publish a number of Renoise-based production and sound design tutorials on YouTube over the coming weeks, months, and maybe… years?

Hoping to launch with a first video in the coming days, and will post new videos in this thread, and answer any questions, if I can.

Feel free to let me know if you have any ideas or requests for tutorials! I’ll probably be doing a bunch on sample-based sound design using native dsp, as well as focusing on a handful of VSTs as well.

peace,

Something I noticed in Mitch Murder's "Renoise Fun" videos

Renoise Forum - January 12, 2022 - 19:21

I was recently re-watching the Mitch Murder “renoise fun” videos on Youtube (where you simply see a song playing and watch the tracker scroll), and noticed something very interesting: the Velocity column is empty (not used) practically 95% of the time, even for parts that are clearly musical instruments like leads, chords, melodies, etc…

Isn’t that odd? His music, to my ears, is incredibly dynamic sounding, and highly musical, so I would have assumed there’d be a fair amount of velocity-based expression in his musical passages – but apparently, nope, unless I’m missing something? And when there is a value input in the Velocity column, it’s usually for (what appear to be) the drum sections, not the ‘musical’ passages. Interesting!

It’s also interesting because when recording a MIDI controller in Renoise, the default setting will record Velocity values, regardless of whether the instrument being triggered can read them or not. So either Mitch turned that default off in Settings, or manually types in every note of every melody and chord from the computer keyboard (no velocity value is input when doing so), which is a crazy notion considering how complex his music can be…

Anyway, definitely got me thinking about his process (I’m a huge fan). Any thoughts on this, or something I’m missing?

Here’s the second video in the series, but this observation applies equally to all three of them:
