What would Renoise ‘rebooted’ look like?

January 13, 2019 - 13:52

So in the spirit of movie reboots (e.g. Star Trek) which are largely done to free future directions from previous concepts. What would a ‘reboot’ look like for Renoise?

Lets say Taktik and co decide to create a new version of Renoise that’s is (gasp!) incompatible with the old version (lets call this Renoise Classic). With a redesign from the ground up, what direction could it go in? What would could be done different in terms of the fundamental codebase and overall design?

Perhaps there is a logic to this when terms such as ‘old and bloated codebase’ are used when software has reached a certain age and further development loses its appeal.

Given trends in the audio world right now I think the following could possibly feature in some way and baked in at a core fundamental level.

  • Scripting / Customisability / Modularity – While already baked into Renoise with lua scripting it has limitations with refresh rates, lack of audio processing, GUI design etc. See also Reaktor, Max, VCV Rack, Max for Live, Bitwig, PD, Loomer Architect for inspiration.

  • Flexible audio and Midi routing – Route anything anywhere.

  • Granular sample playback / Time Stretching / FFT Processing – Trackers have always been about sample manipulation so this kind of functionality would be essential I think.

  • Live Performance and Hardware integration – See Ableton Push and updates to the MIDI specification such as MPE. Also things like the Elektron Machines and their integration into a DAW via Overbridge, also consider Renoise tools such as Guru.

  • UI / Workflow – Appealing to the musicians as well as the prosumers, but then maybe you can’t have it all and being niche is inevitable.

  • AI and Machine Learning – Only in here because its the current buzz, not sure how useful it could be... but then… Sononym..

Legacy concepts that could probably be left behind

  • Tick based timing in favour of Sample Rate processing
  • Sample based player commands in favour of Parameter Locking
  • Self contained modules in favour of folder based file structures

I’m not saying this is the direction Renoise should go in but simply curious about what a fundamental redesign could enable. What would you add to these lists?

Coloring sequence numbers

January 13, 2019 - 03:11

If you could set a color on each sequence number / row, for example via context menu "set color", a color from a predefined set of 10 colors or so, it could be helpful for organisation. Similar die colored tags in macos.

Bug or missuse ?

January 13, 2019 - 00:28

Hi. I am new to Renoise and some weird things happen when I try to make a song. Example : I create a  pattern for a VST and  that pattern gets swapped randomly with another instrument or a sample. It happens randomly , sometimes when I close and re-open the song.

Also I somehow managed to make Renoise to move ALL of my vst filters cutoff to 0. All of them. If I switch each synth filter back , Renoise will bring the cutoff values down to 0 again when I press PLAY. I did not create any automation to this track. I use Tyrell N6. Could this be a bug ? Please help. This is so frustrating. Thanks !

EDIT : I managed to find the problem with Tyrell n6 filters. Its related to the stop button in Renoise. If I press it  the filters will jump down to 0. Im sure this is not normal.

V-Spacing and H-Spacing (Vertical and Horizontal spacing) smaller than

January 12, 2019 - 23:44

Need to change V-Spacing and H-Spacing if GUI (Vertical and Horizontal spacing) smaller than Zero. How i can do that? Need to capture video to fit as much information as possible into the pattern.

I found how change font size whatever you want in *:\Program Files\Renoise 3.1.0\Resources\Skin\Fonts\Config.xml by change strings with "<Size>10,10</Size>".

Is it possible to change the same method v-spacing and h-spacing?

Bug while dragging w/ sections in sequence?

January 12, 2019 - 17:00

Hi,

if I have this sequence structure:

and now am duplicating pattern 22 by "+"-dragging it after position 21, before the section label "start", I will get this result

Shouldn't it look similar to this instead?

Also I would like to suggest to write the sections always in the way it is shown above. Currently, if you expand the pattern comments, the section names will move to the column of the pattern comments, and these are so short that almost all section names will be shortened then til unreadability, at least here. Or am I doing it not in the way it is meant to be used?

MAC: User library folders empty

January 12, 2019 - 12:31

Hi

For some reason the renoise user library on this mac have become empty. Not sure if this is a bug or what!

Its a shared computer, is there any way to reinstall the user lib and keep all my tools etc ? (ie without a reinstall)

WEIRD!

midierror

No one would have deliberately deleted the contents of the folders for sure

Hi all

January 11, 2019 - 21:22
Greetings all,

My name is Scott and I’m a new Renoise user. I have to say I love the program so far. Making glitch and drill and bass beats is SOO much easier in Renoise than in Reaper. Well just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. Can’t wait to really learn the power of Renoise

midi through (midi routing to effects)

January 11, 2019 - 19:20

Hey, I try to use a VST FX that can recieve midi notes and MPE messages. Problem : these midi messages don't seem to go throught the instrument and never reach the effect

Is there a way to route the midi messages to a VST effect ?

Thanks

Is there a way to jump the cursor to the playhead location?

January 11, 2019 - 19:17

When I have the 'follow playhead' turned off, and the playhead is somewhere off screen, is there a hotkey or so I can press to jump the cursor/screen to the current playhead position?

Thanks!

how to constrain MIDI note recording to one column ?

January 11, 2019 - 19:11

Hello and happy new year to all !

I am recording a monophonic melody on the fly from a MIDI keyboard, and I have 3 questions, of which the 1st is my main issue :

1.

Is there a way of preventing Renoise to create additional columns within my track when notes (almost inevitably) overlap ? And if not, then is there an easy way to merge all columns after recodring ?

2.

Is there a way of quantizing on the fly, instead of adding tick offset for almost every note ?

3.

Is there a way of recording (say) aftertouch directly to the curve editor (the panel behind the effects panel) instead of the effect column, in order to get a smoother rendering of it?

Thanks in advance

Fred

Redux: ability to assign slices to a range of keys (different pitches)

January 11, 2019 - 15:58

When I bring in a sample for chopping up, I like to slice it up with different sample start points and have each slice spread over 4-5 keys so that I can play it from different pitches.

I find it difficult to do in redux:

- If I use slices, I can easily and non-destructively edit the start and end points of the slices, but am limited to one key and one pitch for the slice

- If I use separate samples, I can spread each one over a range of keys (with each at a different pitch), but the sample start point is not settable dynamically, I have to cut off the start of the sample to play it from a different start point. This really kills the experimentation aspect and fun of simply moving a marker around to set the start point.

I know people have requested the ability to set the start point of a sample with a marker, this would solve this problem. But if there is some major architectural reason that this is difficult to do without messing up a lot of things, perhaps the ability to spread slices over a range of keys would be a good alternative (also more elegant as you don't need multiple copies of a sample).

Renoise Scripting Terminal And Editor?

January 11, 2019 - 12:50
Hi there, I'm reading on some places about a scripting and editing terminal for Renoise but I can't find anything like it on the tool page, nor on the Renoise site itself about it. Where and how do I get it?

macos: symbolic links no longer supported with 3.1.1?

January 11, 2019 - 12:48

Hi, I'm ramming my head against this:

I use iCloud Drive to save KeyBindings.xml and Tools. Before you throw a "I can't understand", replace iCloud Drive with OneDrive, or DropBox, or Google Drive or whatever. Cloud-based backup of Tools / KeyBindings.

I've tried making symbolic links to KeyBindings.xml from

~/Library/Application Support/Renoise/V3.1.1/Library

yet they seem to be ignored (I make the symbolic link while Renoise is closed, then open Renoise, the shortcuts are not updated.)

I copy KeyBindings.xml to that folder (giving up, basically), and seems to work. but that is now a static copy - I need these to be updated from the Cloud.

Now, where is the default location for Renoise Tools though? ~/Documents/Renoise/Tools or some ~/Library?

Basically am trying to figure out how to use iCloud Drive (or Dropbox or whatever) so that Renoise KeyBindings + Tools are _always_ in sync.

How do I do this, please? Does Renoise prefer accessing ~/Documents/Renoise folders? Why am I finding it troublesome to even figure out where KeyBindings.xml is supposed to go? Where are the link / folder details in Renoise Preferences?

And.. If I have the Tools in ~/Documents/Renoise/Tools - how come none of the tools show in Renoise?

The best production tip/ concept you learnt in 2018?

January 11, 2019 - 00:09

One of those end of year threads, because it`s December and why not?

The best production tip/ concept you learnt in 2018?.. I finally understood the value of Mid-Side compression on buses and master bus!

I`ve had MS compressors on my hard drive for years but never really utilised them properly; just tinkering then defaulting back to stereo.  However I started demoing and ended up buying Cylone Compressor after trying on the master bus and it finally clicked.

Basically If you want to add significant compression to a bus with heavy kicks and bass (content that should mostly be centred), you`re going to collapse your stereo field as the compressor pulls excessively on higher frequency stereo stuff -> frustration and misery!

Use mid side compression and you can keep your stereo info in tact  ...Yay Pro soundz 2019!!!!!

Of course it doesn`t mean you should never use stereo processing on the bus, just that if you want to maintain stereo width, it`s worth playing with some ms processing too-- particularly if you want to do more than a couple of dB compression, as in typical SSL bus-comp style.

--------------------
Some mid-side freebies (I`ve only tested HBC recently though)

Density Compressor

MS EQ COMP - which seems to require registration manager / app

Not full m/s control, but has m/s slider so you can reduce the compression happening at the sides.  One of my favourite freeware compressors aswell (scroll halfway down page):
Hybrid bus Compressor-2

--------------------
Cheapware: (Cyclone currently going for under $10 on sale)
Cyclone compressor
