Is there a lua call to toggle "override window manager shortcuts"?

July 25, 2020 - 18:32

Hello everyone,

Just wondering if there’s a function in the API (or maybe even a key binding?) to do this, it would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Linux: still dropping notes on plugins playing chords

July 25, 2020 - 18:13

Renoise 3.2.1 x64 on Linux Mint 19.3 using JACK. Still getting dropped notes when the same track is playing several notes with a VST/DSSI/etc. plugin. Randomizing the note delays seems to “help” reduce the number of notes dropped, but still not a perfect workaround.

Modulation Sets

July 25, 2020 - 16:16

Hi,
I’ve made a few lanes of modulation sets on a sample - is it possible to control them in other ways than clicking them? Can they be automated or attached to a macro?
Thanks!

Some pre sales questions I wanted to ask and some advice on moving forward

July 25, 2020 - 13:51

Hi guys and gals,

So just a brief history I used Impulse Tracker back in the mid 90’s, was the beginning of my journey with composing music and by far the best experience of my mid to late teens. I had the pleasure of communicating with Jeffrey Lim a couple of times in those days.

Impulse Tracker opened up doors for me to the point of being one of the very few who took a PC to rave parties in Sydney and played live with Impulse Tracker. LOL… I will never forget those days.

That was about 20 years ago…Due to circumstances in those times, composing became a second hobby and soon was not something I could dedicate time to anymore.

Here I am 43 years old, 2 kids, beautiful wife, living the dream…

The dream of getting back in writing music has been haunting me for 20 years now and I feel I am now ready again.

So I initially thought something like Ableton was the go to product and not only did I buy a license for it which cost a pretty penny, I invested in an external soundcard a Native Instruments Komplete 6, an Akai MPK Mini as well.

I have not really invested too much time in Ableton at the moment, but my roots are really with Trackers, that is what I know and remember.

So I found Renoise, Schism Tracker as options for modern day tracking.

Sorry for the long winded intro, here are my questions.

  1. When I play my Impuse Tracker original tracks they do not sound as good as playing them thru Schism Tracker, why is this ?

  2. Is Renoise, really the best option for me, if I want to utilize my external Midi equipment like my MPK Mini as a Synth to play notes, or samples etc…etc… Is this even possible to configure it with Renoise ?

  3. In personal or professional opinions is something like Renoise inferior, superior to software like Ableton when it comes to composing music, what are the pros and cons of each. The last thing I want to do is choose one then move onto the next.

  4. Is it possible to load up sample banks other than sample files eg WAV files, any way to import Ableton sample packs into Renoise?

I think that’s about it for now… too many questions.

A big shout out to the developers of this software, just the fact that your keeping the tracking scene alive with software like this deserves a big pat on the back.

Mitch.

New Tool: (3.2) Drum Layers (July 2020)

July 25, 2020 - 09:46

New Alpha: Drum Layers

  • Note this version will always keep a minimum of three empty sample slots on any instrument that is chosen while it is open. Shouldn’t be a big deal but worth knowing.

  • Being an early alpha keep eye out for bugs. i did manage to crash renoise once when I had one of the envelopes detached in renoise and navigated elsewhere. Couldn’t track it down again but do report it here if you run into it so we can try and get a proper report to taktik.

Drum Layers

Designed to take drudgery out of layering drums or other samples.

Keyboard Shortcut: Drum Layers

Best place to start is with an empty instrument slot. Press Wav button on the leftmost slot and drag a sample into the sampler. You can now tweak with the other controls and navigate around the sampler. Repeat for slots 2 and 3.

Also:

  • Each sample layer has its own modulation and fx lanes pre-routed
  • You can Solo and Mute each layer. The tool uses specially named gainers in the fx lanes to do this.

Should be fairly self explanatory if you are familiar with the sampler functions. I’ll update more details later. More features planned too.

Renoise spectrum analyzer is AMAZING to improve your singing skills

July 24, 2020 - 09:43

Okay, can we agree that the Renoise spectrum is the most beautiful of its kind?

I’m starting to learn how to sing. It has been only two weeks and I already know/learned:

  • My vocal range (tenor).
  • Exactly at which note my chest voice breaks into head voice.
  • Better breath support,
  • Singing the exact note I want (placing the cursor first) and keeping it stable.

It has also helped me to start developing my timbre, I have gathered different acapellas I like as references and I noticed that my voice sounds kinda weak because I was lacking 2nd - 4th order harmonics, so using different techniques I’m learning to make them stand out. It’s really fun monitoring your mic, looking at the spectrum and watching your voice follow the acapella, I’ve hit notes I didn’t even thought possible.

  • Don’t forget to set the block size to 8192!
  • Remember A5 is actually A4.

Click individual note to hear?

July 24, 2020 - 09:41

Hi. I have been writing some chord harmonies and I was finding myself wondering if there is a way to somehow click on an individual note to hear what pitch it has? I can’t recall if this is a feature I may have used in the past, or if I’m just imagining things? I am aware that you can ctrl-click a note to select that instrument (very useful!) In googling for an answer to this question I also just learned that I can hit enter to hear the notes on a given line, which is also really useful, but I haven’t been able to find a way to hear each individual note.

If this is not a feature that exists, I’d really like to propose this as a future enhancement. When writing chord harmonies, I’m sometimes not sure which voice I’ve entered incorrectly. It would be amazingly convenient to be able to click (maybe alt-click?) an individual note to hear it. It would basically function the same as hitting Enter to hear the current line, but only play the clicked note. (Actually, the same behaviour could be triggered by something like ctrl+enter for a keyboard-driven version of the input.)

Thanks

Fluidsynth not showing after Ubuntu upgrade

July 24, 2020 - 01:56

I upgraded today from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04. Everything was good until I opened Renoise.

Fluidsynth doesn’t show in my plugins so all my old songs don’t play properly. I removed all the Failed db files under ~/.renoise/V3.1.1 and also did a rescan for plugins in Renoise but nothing helped.

Renoise is v3.1.1 and Fluidsynth after upgrade is 2.1.1.

Any solution or ideas on how to figure out why it doesn’t show?

A few quirks with editing patterns

July 23, 2020 - 22:20

Hello everyone, it’s been a while! Just updated to 3.2.1 a few weeks ago, awesome

Two little quirks that have been bugging me forever in renoise:

(1) can’t insert note-off in chords, ie. shift+notes to enter them horizontally on the same track

(2) soloing/un-muting channels that are part of a group: imho should unmute the group when unmuting, and recursively upwards if that group is part of an upper group, etc.

Keep up the awesome work on the most powerful sequencer and best DAW ever in existence !!!

I did a Youtube tutorial about Amens on Renoise for PRSPCT Records

July 23, 2020 - 17:22

Hi all,

I made this tutorial on Amens and Renoise with my personal workflow for the PRSPCT Records channel, please check, and show your support in the comments if you like it!

I’m planning on more Renoise related content for the channel, (I mean my entire career revolves around it and its predecessors, tracking is central to everything I do).

I really want to impart how efficient and great Renoise is and shine a spot light on trackers, and I’m curious to see how this goes down with their community.

(also Edouard whats with the 7F though ? )

Possibility to display Phrase Editor next to regular Editor

July 23, 2020 - 16:20

Phrases are great and have loads of potential, but I would find it much more productive if the phrase editor would not just be visible in the Instrument tab, but also in the side bar, so one can see both the regular editor and the phrase editor at the same time.

This way it would just be easier to select phrases or change things while working on the arrangement. I feel this would make things much easier and provide better oversight of the project.

Another helpful addition would be to give Phrases names in addition to their number. Also Phrases within Phrases within Phrases within…

New Tool (3.2.2): Rx Markers

July 23, 2020 - 15:44

IMPORTANT

  • Requires Renoise 3.2.2
  • This is an early version of the tool and you may encounter errors. Use at your own risk. Please report any bugs in this thread.
  • If you delete things in an instrument that are used by this tool and the warning tells you to undo this immediately, it’s not kidding. If you don’t then you may get errors and the tool might stop working.

> Download Rx Markers 0.1

This tool allows you to control the movement of two slice markers while re-triggering the sample. Playback normally only cares when the starting marker moves, but the Rx makes it also respond to the end marker.

Press the ‘Set Markers’ button and the tool will install the following things into an instrument: a small repeating phrase, a new fx chain with two devices, and two slice markers at the Origin points (you can set these before hitting the button). Either the tool GUI or the fx chain can be used to alter the various parameters and they will update each other to any changes made.

Note that markers will stay at least one sample apart and cannot pass each other.

  • Auto Reset - The same as on a regular XY Pad, this will cause the values to move back to the center when the mouse button is released.
  • Follow mode - Causes the GUI sliders to move in tandem when one of them is used. This also applies to the XY Pad, but you’ll find it ‘quirky’ with this on.
  • Instr. Link - Links the tool GUI with the Instrument Selector so that changing one will change the other. Disabling this will allow you to work on one sample in Renoise while controlling another with the tool GUI.
  • Range - How far the slice marker can move to either side of its Origin point. Changing this will alter the accuracy of the sliders/XY Pad.
  • Origin - The central point on the waveform that the slice marker will move out from. Pressing ‘Set Markers’ again will set new Origins at the current marker positions.
  • Sliders - The first number shows the Offset (how far the marker is from its Origin), while the second number is its exact sample value on the waveform. You can click on these numbers and enter new (valid) ones.
  • Slice Size - The amount of samples between the two markers. The option to the right can be used to set the anchor point for any changes to this value.

(In the fx chain, the XY Pad’s Min and Max sliders function as the Start and End sliders of the GUI)

Other Cool Stuff

  • The devices in the fx chain allow the slice markers to be automated via macros (see the video).
  • There’s no save files. Everything is calculated from the available data. This means any songs or instruments that make use of this tool will work for anyone that has it installed.
  • You don’t have to use the provided phrase. You can delete it or create your own one with different effects (e.g. try varying the Rx value or adding backwards commands).
  • Slices have their own loop points which you can move to create loops within loops. Changing the loop type can also have different effects that will be apparent on small slices.
  • Two slice markers means there’s actually two slices. Although the second one isn’t used by default, you could create a phrase that does, which is useful because it’s changing in length in response to the first slice.

Limitations

  • Since this is a Lua tool, automations created with it are not going to result in playback that’s exactly the same each time.
  • Pressing ‘Set Markers’ will use the first sample of an instrument, even if you’ve selected another one.
  • Values are stored using the XY Pad and Doofer, so accuracy is restricted to 3 decimal places. This makes the tool inaccurate with very long waveforms, so I’ve restricted its use to those under 20,000,000 samples (several minutes long). This issue can probably be overcome in the future.
  • Playback can stop when trying to move markers past each other by clicking and dragging them with the mouse.

Sektor plugin seems to not work on renoise 3.2.2

July 23, 2020 - 06:17

Specs: windows 10 64bit, i7-7500U, 16gb ram
When I try to load any preset I made for sektor (version 1.3.9) it immediately crashes the plugin. The presets were ones I saved in renoise as .fxp files. I loaded up an instance of sektor and didn’t have anything else loaded in renoise and let it idle for a bit and I got a Renoise Has Stopped Working message O_O. On renoise version 3.2.1 it was working perfectly fine. So far all my other plugins are working as they should.

Blackhole audio server input broken on 3.2.2

July 23, 2020 - 00:43

I’ve been happily using Blackhole (https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole) as an in device to pipe output from Csound into Renoise, and it seems there’s been a regression in the latest bugfix 3.2.2, in that there is silence at the Line Input device.

This is on Mojave.

I can’t see any changes in the bug fixes list posted on this forum that would point towards this. The only thing that happened is that Renoise asked to install the latest version of Rewire, which I’m not using here
