[BUG] Browsing the presets of the VST3 plugin generates jumps

Renoise Forum - April 25, 2021 - 12:45

R3.3.2 W10 x64
I don’t know if this problem is generalized for all VST3s or is only caused by a single VST3.
I have tested it with Helm VST3 and Helm VSTi x64 v0.9.0, and the problem is only with VST3.

The problem

If the plugin has many presets, for example up to 255, when you are browsing a preset somewhat higher than half, say> 140, the forward or backward selection generates a jump, (instead of +1 it generates +2 ??? and in instead of -1 it seems to generate -1+1 ???). It happens by clicking and also with the wheel. It should only be +1 and -1.

You can try it from here:

Load Helm VST3 with at least 255 presets. Move through presets throughout the range. You will see that when browsing the presets> 140 approximately, the selection does not work correctly.

This does not happen with VSTi x64. Either there is a problem with the Helm VST3 or it is a general problem of all VST3s.

Any user who has other VST3s with a lot of presets could try this to see if it is a general problem?

Difference between recorded level and sample level?

Renoise Forum - April 25, 2021 - 12:43

I’ve noticed a weird behavior with renoise :
I record a guitar and my sound card indicates I peak at around -5dB. Great.

Then I play back the sample (all sample levels at the default 0dB settings) and the same recording through the same VU meters of the same soundcard now peak at around -10dB

It’s annoying because I do reamping and 5dB makes a world of difference and I don’t want to have to reajust every sample by hand.

Is there a setting I’m missing somewhere ?

Add fast interpolation to various dsp parameters

Renoise Forum - April 25, 2021 - 09:26

Hi,

yesterday I found out that the bus compressor is not interpolated at all for the parameters “ratio” and “makeup” at least. Maybe even more.

Here is an example xrns:
interpolation.xrns (76.7 KB)

Steps to reproduce:

  • Play, disable the bus compressor on the very last send track (within the doofer). You should hear almost no aliasing. Also watch the analyzer (using slope factor +4.8dB)
  • Enable the bus compressor. You should see and hear a lot of aliasing.
  • Disable the target “makeup” in the hydra device. The aliasing should be a lot quieter, still audible (coming now from “ratio” slider movements)
  • Enable the gainer target (3rd slot). There should not be any added aliasing
  • Disable the “ratio” target. Aliasing should be gone.

Can you add interpolation to makeup and ratio? Since this is about very precise dynamics, maybe an interpolation even faster than the gainer device was a good idea… Is this possible?

If you do this, I would love to test your results, since I am now deep in this topic, so I can quickly say if it lags too much or not, etc.

Thanks.

P.S. I guess the meta signals are meant to be not interpolated in the source already, due timed intervalls? But maybe it still could be interpolated already at the source output? Or would it then clash with other interpolations on the target side (e.g. vst plugin).

P.S.2. At least it would not hurt if all the makeup / gains in all devices were interpolated.

Simple pattern editor VST with midi out?

Renoise Forum - April 25, 2021 - 02:06

Hi,

I really enjoy using Renoise and Redux. I especially like the pattern editor (the main tracker) portion of renoise. However, I prefer to use Ableton Live session view to compose tracks and record external instruments.

With rewire support being deprecated (and even with rewire, windows DAWs don’t seem to support midi out from rewire slaves to rewire hosts) I’d like to suggest another product, a VST, that implements just the pattern editor portion of Renoise.

In my ideal scenario, I would use this pattern editor to contain a separate pattern within each ableton/bitwig clip, and basically replace the piano roll within those traditional daw applications with the renoise tracker interface. This is very different from Redux, as I do not want a transposed ‘phrase’ or apreggiator to play on every note-on, just the regular pattern. I also would like to tie this pattern with other instruments (including Ableton & Bitwig internal instruments, as well as M4L and Bitwig’s GRID). I would prefer not to have the instrument on a separate track with the tracker pattern on it’s own midi track. That makes the clip/session view too complex. I would like my tracks to show something like [new tracker vst → instrument → audio effect].

I think this potential implementation would be successful both in pure sales as well as vectoring folks to take a greater interest in Renoise/Redux. I wouldn’t mind paying a bit of a premium over Renoise/Redux to achieve this workflow.

Thanks.

[BUG] Disabled sidechain send won't disable sidechain input

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 20:35

If the sidechain send device disabled, the affected device(s) now will neither receive audio from the sidechain nor the prior device.

The receiving device should disable sidechain input, as soon as the sender was disabled.

Is the LFO outputing integer values/resolution only?

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 18:09

If I use the LFO as a transfer function, the incoming signal’s resolution seems to be heavily reduced in the output signal, like a conversion from 0-127.f to integer or so… Why is that?

Breakcore EP in Renoise (Chucky Baby - Scrap Metal EP)

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 18:02

Hey Y’all

My names Chuck and I made a Breakcore EP 100% in Renoise, that i released last May.

Here’s the first track off of it (If you like it theres links to the project file / other songs etc. in youtube description)

Similarly I have started doing weekly Renoise streams on my twitch channel (twitch.tv/chuckb) to open the floor to Q&A about my composition / production process.

Would love to chat with you all about writing weird / new music with renoise.

Cheers

Bug / timing imprecision in LFO and formula device

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 17:16

The LFO and the formula device delay the input signal by some milliseconds, even if the LFO is using a line as transfer function and the formula device is using y=A.

Both devices should introduce the exact PDC instead.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Use a hydra to control two signals/parameters of a later effect device, using the same settings.
  • Now insert a LFO and later the formula device into the signal chain of the second signal
  • The second slider now is a bit delayed.

Correct behaviour:

Unwrapping doofer

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 15:50

Hi,

I’ve made a doofer which is some kind of dynamics module. It uses a signal follower which controls a bus compressor. Now I would like to get the signal followers input from another track/sidechain instead. So I have to move the signal follower out of the doofer, or maybe even unwrap all chidren modules to the parent layer.

I am already using all 8 doofer knob slots, so I also can’t send the signal followers output into a macro knob… Any idea for quickly resolve this problem? Thanks.

EDIT: Oh damn, I also cannot target the master track from a send track…

Will it be the exact same signal, if I move the signal follower to the parent level, and then use a marco knob for the sf’s output? Or are the macro knob somehow more limited in time frame resolution?

How do I link Wave Alchemy Bassynth as a plugin?

Renoise Forum - April 24, 2021 - 04:09

I’m a total noob when it comes to renoise and music production for the most part and I’ve never used plugins. I’m making hardcore/breakcore and I would like to make hard hitting kicks for my songs. I would like to know how to use a VST with renoise basically, in case I use other synth VSTs. Plz help

Some hard Questions... Difficult to Categorize

Renoise Forum - April 23, 2021 - 13:17

Hello Folks,

is there any possibility ( Option or plugin) for Renoise to see what Note is Played when tip with mouse on Renoise virtuall Keyboard???

The background is, my Style of Record. I try some melody with mouse on virtual keyboard and then i switch from SampleEdit Window to track/colums Window to record. (where i no see the virtual Keyboard. Then my record stuck because of searching the right note/key for the Tip on the virtual Keyboard in Samplewindow.

Good Solution would be an undock floating Virtual Keyboard, which i can see in trackwindow as overlay for instance. Or at least see the note Value when tipping a virtual key in samplewindow which i can memory.

Hope i explain my wants/needs clearly. Any Advices are welcome.

happy tracking

MKLBST Spotify albums

Renoise Forum - April 22, 2021 - 16:56

I have collected songs old and new into two releases on Spotify after being pestered to do so by friends.

Escapism was written, recorded and compiled about 18 months ago, but never released as an album because I didn’t have a distributor (using Distrokid now, but I don’t know if it’s any better or worse than other distributors). All these songs are also on Soundcloud.

Spotify Escapism

MKLBST · Album · 2021 · 11 songs.

The more recent album consists of songs made during lockdown, as the title suggests. I guess these songs are on Soundcloud too, but I have made some alterations to them, for a variety of reasons.

Spotify Melancoma

MKLBST · Album · 2021 · 11 songs.

Calm Razor - Davidxon

Renoise Forum - April 22, 2021 - 15:09

I don’t know where I get these weird names from but this one of the last songs made before making the plunge into quitting dope (I was high). That day I was finishing it up I woke up on the floor with tourniquet still on my arm and a needle in my hand. That was a relapse. I felt fine that day because I tapered off in a very smooth controlled way. I ruined it and made myself feel more sick 2 days later then I any other day. The song was inspired by all the fighting, suicidal depression, the stupid girl I was involved in who first let me have a threesome with her and her other friend and ended with her putting a knife to my throat after she once again extorted money out of my stupid ass and I threatened to crash the car and kill both of us if she didn’t give me my money back. I realized most people who I thought were friends were there to just use me… It’s amazing how clear the world looks now. So much detail. Everything was a low-rez blur past year or so.

Hello good people!

I’m picking up my old Renoise addiction and all that misses is a good midi keyboard (with extra pads would be nice).
Any suggestions? Budget doesn’t matter to much.

Drop your knowledge and experiences.

Excl hiphop beat needed

Renoise Forum - April 21, 2021 - 12:26

Hi guys!

I’m recording a hiphop album with some friends for fun and would love to have a Renoise built track on it. Also to learn how to make hiphop in Renoise in the future. I started out using trackers and Renoise in the early 2000’s for hardstyle mostly but want to pick it up again. If someone can make me (or has) a great hiphop beat I would love to buy it!. Name a price! I would like the xrns file so I can learn and adjust things while making the song. I would like a old skool type beat (bit jazzy or funky is nice as well). I’m not lazy but just out of the producing game for a while and don’t want to go to the regular websites for a track.

Hope someone can help!

GLOBAL INPUT - MONO / POLY - option missing?

Renoise Forum - April 21, 2021 - 10:29

MONO / POLY INPUT A GLOBAL CONTROL.

Is there a solution ,

how come this is not an option ?

plenty of space on the transport bar to fit the controls options:

Mono / on off .

Poly / on off . toggle ^

and 0 to 8 - up down . i.e restrict Mono Poly to No change 0 , 1 lane to 8 lanes aka notes to be played / recorded.

Fixes most of the issues , using a midi keyboards / computer keyboard while recording notes, monophonic lines or chords. or chords limited to an amount of lanes or polyphonic notes . 2 or 3 etc.
If this is not an option in 2021 , can someone forward it to the bods upstairs .

dont tell me theres a plugin to do this??

——————————

From the manuals WITH EDITS ,

Polyphonic vs. Monophonic Recording

Sequential (monophonic) recording can often be better when recording drums or monophonic instruments. The Mono button allows you to toggle between recording a single note at a time or multiple notes simultaneously (chords). This is located in the Instrument Properties panel, found at the top right of the interface in Redux and near the top right while in the Sampler, Plugin and MIDI tabs of Renoise.

Entering Chords with the Computer Keyboard

When entering notes step by step with the computer keyboard, they will by default be placed sequentially. If you want to quickly insert chords without live recording, you can do this by holding down “Left Shift” *WHY WHY WHY CRAZY LOL * …. while entering the notes. This will automatically create new note columns to the right and enter the new notes there. THE MONO POLY BUTTON WOULD FIX THAT Holding shift why why why…

Note that MIDI keyboards will always record chords when pressing more than one key at a time. <— REALLY!! To quote " (monophonic) recording can often be better when recording drums or “ , then why is there no MONO / POLY option globally ??

^^^ exactly why there needs to be a GLOBAL CONTROL FOR MONO POLY INPUT .

Tip , put it in the transport bar.

PLEASE

Hard drive filled with log file

Renoise Forum - April 21, 2021 - 01:48

I came back to my computer after leaving Renoise open for a few days and the Log.txt file had bloated to 60GB and filled up the rest of my hard drive space. It seems Renoise had been writing the following error message over and over:

MIDI-IO: Failed to flush the ALSA sequencer event queue (error: Resource temporarily unavailable)!!

I would expect there to be some guard to stop a repeating error message from filling up all hard drive space.

Formula Device: How To Learn To Write Formulas

Renoise Forum - April 20, 2021 - 12:35

I want to experiment with the Formula Device but I don’t know how to begin.

I understand the premise of the device. It’s take inputs, runs formulas, and generates an output based on those formulas that can be mapped to a desired location. No problems there.

My issue is with the actual creation of the formulas themselves. I have no idea how to write them or how to get started writing them. I’ve read the “help” menu details in the device with all the listed “variables” “math constants” “musical variables” & “functions” and I can grasp their purpose in that they are what is used to create the formulas, but again, I have no idea how to actually write my own formulas using them.

What do I need to study so I can get started with this?

Do I need to learn a specific type of math used for DSP math like trigonometry? Do I need to learn the LUA programming language to write formulas? And if so there any specific resources like websites, books, etc, that I should refer to learn from?

Thanks
