"Render Selection" "Sample Record Pattern Mode" sizes do not match

Renoise Forum - January 16, 2025 - 07:25

on macOS, during 20ms latency with no sync offset, and with these settings:

If I have a 137 bpm LPB 4 speed 64 row pattern, and i select the whole track (0-64) and render, i get 336000 sample frames. if i use sample recorder with pattern mode, and record the pattern, the result is 336960.

now, i can compensate for this by resizing the sample to 336000. (i need the sample to be full pattern length, but no more, no extra padding).

now, my question is this, if i have a 128 row pattern or 256 row pattern, the numbers also seem to fluctuate, which is terribly tiresome. I need the sample to end at the last “tick” of the last row, so it will get retriggered. but is there a known thing that i can compensate with, or will this fluctuate depending on latency ms, maybe different platforms (macOS Windows Linux), etc?

I’ve tried to make it so that if the framesize is larger or smaller than 336000-336960, it removes 3500 frames from the end of the sample. but this doesn’t help with a “recorded 2 pattern lengths of 64 row each”.

i’m wondering, is this a known issue within Renoise that the sample frames recorded by sample editor don’t match the sample frames recorded by “selection in pattern from beginning to end of pattern”? is there an easy math that i can apply for this? i need the sample to stop at the end of the pattern, and i’m alright with trying to compensate for it with a script, but i’d prefer not to have to do that.

is this a known bug? surely the recordings should be of identical length. i can create some examples of this fluctuation with 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, this evening (render selection in pattern, record with pattern mode) and repost in this thread.

Note selection on Sample tab

Renoise Forum - January 15, 2025 - 20:02

Hello!

Once upon a time a used Renoise a lot, but there’s been updates since and I’m not sure how to achieve what I’m looking for, so perhaps somebody can help.

Anywho, my experience is mostly with 2.8 version and older. That said, I like to dabble in hiphop and I’ve used the sample editor to skim around a lof of samples (instruments). Play (with return/enter key) from whenever by selecting a point in the sample and playing on whatever note by controlling the note box with my mouse scroller.

Hoping that image will come through…

Now in 3.4 version, the sampling has changed a lot. And there’s no way to use my old workflow. I also searched the forum and there are some workaroundish ways, but these are far too slow for my liking. So wondering if anybody would have any suggestions on how to achieve this?
Perhaps there’s a user created plugin or something like that to fit my needs?

Hoping somebody will have some ideas.

Plugdata , gui ..audio interrupted when opening gui

Renoise Forum - January 14, 2025 - 15:12

While opening closing the gui of plugdata , the audio of renoise is interrupted
Plugdata is used to send midi to reaktor vst , and the only gui animation that is happening are some radiobuttons.
It would be great if we somehow had the option to make sure the audio is not interrupted

Filter modulation + ghost notes = popping?

Renoise Forum - January 13, 2025 - 18:24

Description:

Ghost notes create audible “pop” when filter modulation is enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Renoise.
  2. Load/create sample.
  3. Enable sampler filter modulation.
  4. In pattern editor: Create note-on (with instrument number), followed by ghost note.
  5. Play (you will hear a “pop” for each note-on event without an instrument number).

Expected results:

Note will play with filter applied at specified cutoff.

Actual results:

Note plays with filter applied, but with an unwanted very short-duration “pop” with a lot of high frequency (possibly low frequencies as well).

Misc. Notes:

Things that “enhance” the popping effect:

  • “Purer” samples without noise (unless cutoff is turned very low).
  • Cutoff below 1.0 but greater than 0.0.
  • Lower resonance.
  • Popping happens even if the ghost note volume is set to 00 (so there is no sound, just a pop).

Thanks for reading.

Is rewire dead for v3.4.4?

Renoise Forum - January 12, 2025 - 21:45

i’m wondering if rewire is completely dead in every incarnation of renoise v3.4.x?
i mean i could remove it from my tool, Paketti, if there’s no use for it anymore.

Sorry if it has been suggested before

I would like to be able to skip some patterns when composing
Here is how I see this

As an alternative I see this as different arrangements available to choose from
Here’s the mockup

The black patterns would be skipped, the grey one would be played

Repeater and recording the notes

Renoise Forum - January 11, 2025 - 08:45

Hi

This might be a really stupid question… I am using the repeater to manipulate a break and using the right hand mouse button to record what I am doing. When I play the song back do I have to turn the repeater on to hear the edits- at the exact time? This seems difficult. Also when I export the song will the edits be there? Sorry I am a newb and this is confusing me

Window frame of tool has the same dimensions in Win-MAC-Linux?

Renoise Forum - January 10, 2025 - 21:00

This is a bit of a weird question but I need to know if the floating tool window (:show_custom_dialog) has the same dimensions in the frame for the 3 operating systems Windows, MAC and Linux.

That is, if the top bar has the same height in pixels, or the side lines of the frame have the exact same thickness and if the bottom line also has the same thickness.

If we create a tool that needs to calculate the entire window surface and we use an operating system like Windows 11, we need to know if the calculations are going to be exactly the same for MAC and for Linux.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the necessary computers to test all 3 platforms.

I assume that all these dimensions are equal, but I have no way of verifying this.

Request for clarification on VST3 parameter automation update frequency

Renoise Forum - January 9, 2025 - 23:18

Hi!

I’ve noticed parameter automation in Renoise is not nearly as smooth as in other DAWs (tested Reaper, Bitwig and FLStudio).

Scenario is the following:

Load Surge XT into Renoise, create a single pattern of length 32, BPM 120, LPB 8, play a single C4 note from the start (Surge defaults to saw osci). Add an instrument automation control that varies Surge’s filter cutoff from 0 to max in those 32 lines. So +8 per line. The resulting changes in filter cutoff are audibly stepped. I am running at 48khz with the default 12-ticks-per-line, but varying any of those 2 doesnt seem to help much.
Is this expected behaviour? And if so, why? Reaper and Bitwig, on a similar simple demo, perform filter cutoff modulation absolutely smooth. Sorry if i’m missing something.

So really how often are automated vst3 parameter updates supposed to be sent to the plugin processor?

For some in-depth details: I’m developing my own VST3 plugin (just used Surge as an example because anyone can download it) and these are the results I’m getting when I am debugging automation events in my own synth:

  • Reaper with 160 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update per block, so 300 per second
  • Renoise with 480 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update each 8 (!) blocks, so only 12.5 per second
  • Renoise with 128 block size, 48kHz gives me 1 update each 20 (!) blocks, so only 18.75 per second

TBH i have not debugged Bitwig nor Fruity but they do sound smooth, so I am assuming loads of parameter updates in those, too.

Now I know all of this can in theory be solved with internal parameter update filtering in the plugin (actually tried that, sounds smooth with an 150ms or-so low-pass), but that’s an additional 150 ms of latency. Also surely it cannot be the case that a somewhat mainstream synth like Surge behaves so radically different in Renoise vs any other DAW just with default settings?

Any insights and/or clarification greatly appreciated. Or even better please just tell me that i’m wrong and i messed up somewhere:)

Still loving Renoise so thanks once more for a wonderful product.

Mutlitap delay , frequency shifter in feedback l0op

Renoise Forum - January 7, 2025 - 15:46

I use the multitap delay all the time because it just near perfect, simple to use and sounds amazing .
The only thing it misses is a frequency shifter in the feedback loop (not a pitch shifter ) , the dsp code for a frequency shifter is super easy and the mt delay already has a dropdown + frequency slider for the other filter types .
I’s a win- win scenario , when setting delay time to 0ms and no feedback we get a free frequency shifter as effect to
Do it ;0 !
And happy new year to everybody
