Auto Select Track By Instrument

Renoise Forum - August 2, 2023 - 17:53

So there is a tool that auto selects an instrument based on the first note here:

New Tool (3.0): Autocapture From First Note Renoise Tools renoise [3.01] BETA; TESTING WELCOMED Tool Version 1.1 Removed a lot of the unecessary status updates, only empty track is notified by the autocapture 3 new Shortcuts: "`ACF` Add Or Go To Empty Instrument Slot" Takes you to the first unused instrument slot in the instrument list (empty slot is tested/counts here as an instrument with no name) "`ACF` Go To First Empty Track" Takes you to the first empty track, if none are present a new track is created called “NEW TRACK” "`ACF` Go To Fir…

I’m looking for something that does the exact opposite:

I would like to scroll through my instruments and have a track auto selected rather than scrolling through tracks and having the instrument selected.

Ideally this is useful for a one to one type of setup where one instrument per track is sufficient.

However, going back and forth between pattern editor/mixer to select a track and record then back to the sampler to edit can be a bit cumbersome when you have loads of tracks(My default is 128)

Being able to scroll the instruments and know that when you’re ready to record it will be on a preassigned track would be great.

As always I’m willing to shell out some cash for this one. Workflow is my top priority here.

The correct way for loading 16 samples directly

Renoise Forum - August 1, 2023 - 22:55

so, i have 16 files in a folder.
i want to load them with one click.
i.e. if renoise has 16 slots in the instrument box, those 16 samples should be loaded one per instrument box slot.
what’s the correct way of doing this?
i already know how to load one onto “current slot”, but i’d obviously prefer to be able to load all 16 at one go, without overwriting any pre-existing samples.
so “add instrument” instead of “instrument appears to whichever instrumentbox slot you’re on”.
please help?

exec open -a /Applications/Renoise.app/Contents/MacOS/Renoise /tmp/plom_renoise_$1.wav

will load one sample. but i need to load multiple samples. what’s the right way?

selecting 6 files and throwing them into renoise just results in the last sample being opened in the instrument box slot that’s selected.

Multi-core audio optimizations

Renoise Forum - August 1, 2023 - 18:06

@taktik thanks for the bug fixes!

sorry to bother, but do you think multicore optimization would be feasible in the future? What feature are you hoping for in upcoming Renoise releases? - #636 by neopan

Mutant Breaks Competition #15: Mix it up and make some friends!

Renoise Forum - August 1, 2023 - 10:00

Another Mutant Breaks is here!

This time it’s about collaborating and mixing up genres. Getting out of your comfort zone and making new friends.

You’ll be randomly paired with another MBC#15 participant. You’ll have the month of September to make a track together, combining two different genres that don’t obviously go together. More on that later.

How you work together is up to you. But I highly recommend you have a video call. Get to know each other a bit and talk about it. Share files, and don’t rely too much on external instruments and effects. Renoise seems like the obvious choice as DAW. But you can of course do anything you want. Use any software or hardware you like. Though you may have to render it to audio in case your partner doesn’t have the same software on their system.

When?

Sign up now!
Registration closes Tuesday August 29th.

Pairing announcement: September 1st.

Competition start: September 1st
Deadline: September 30th.

All dates are in your local time zone.

About combining genres
It’s all about making something new and fresh. Something you wouldn’t normally make. The idea is to go for bold choices, not safe ones.

Some examples:
Electro + Synthwave = meh, too similar.
Electro + Heavy Metal = Yeah, go nuts!

Heavy Metal + Classical music = meh, HM borrows a lot from it.
Heavy Metal + Techno = That could be interesting!

Genre suggestions
Here are some suggestions of genre combinations. But feel free to pick your own.

Berlin School + Classical
Berlin School + Breakcore
Berlin School + Rap
Black Metal + Breakcore
Black Metal + HipHop
Breakcore + Ambient
Breakcore + Classical
Chiptune + Ambient
Electro + Mathcore
Electro + (14th century) medieval music
Electro + Blues
Gabber + Ambient
Happy Hardcore + Classical
HipHop + Ambient
Psytrance + Ambient
Psytrance + Mathcore
Psytrance + Rap
Psytrance + Ska
Techno + Heavy Metal
Techno + (14th century) medieval music
Techno + Mathcore

This is by no means an exhaustive list. So feel free to combine whatever genres you like. Just remember to pair unlikely ones so you get something new and unexpected. And please, suggest combinations for the list.

Prizes
None…?
I don’t like the idea of music being something ‘you win at’. For me it’s all about having fun making something. But if people feel different and have something to offer, by all means.

Ps.
I’m blatantly stealing the collaboration idea from SynthForum.nl’s CollApril, so kudos to them.

Possibility of future Windows 7 support

Renoise Forum - July 31, 2023 - 17:35

Ok, Windows 7 is already out of scope of main-stream support.
microsoft supports only embedded devices and POS machines till October 2024.
The most stubborn ones use these updates on generic desktop computers.
Renoise system requirements still contain Windows 7 line, but think that such occurrence is not for a long time.

Creating this topic, just because i can and bet that neat quantity of people would like to ask the same question. So, here is a quick poll to research possibility of Windows 7 support.

Please insert your five coins.

PS Please don’t begin “this OS is obsolete” routine, to prevent unneeded conversations and to keep thread clean. Just believe me that plethora of people are using Windows 7 for a good reason. As for Linux and Mac users, please, stay calm too.

In case of acceptable results this poll can help Renoise developers to understand ability of commercial effectiveness of such project.

Please recommend me a lightweight Audio Multitrack Recording software for Win 10, and possibly Linux

Renoise Forum - July 31, 2023 - 16:39

I’m looking for multitrack audio recording software. Lightweight. Nothing too fancy. Preferably multiplatform, but Win10 is fine.

For simply recording external instruments with efx.

Audacity is too minimal, but other commercial software seems me just too much.

Something that sort of emulates cassette 4tracker workflow feel.

Thanks!

⮚ Renoise 3.4.3 and Redux 1.3.3 beta released

Renoise Forum - July 31, 2023 - 15:32

A long overdue bugfix release for Renoise and Redux is now available for registered users.

There are some “hairy” fixes in there - VST2/3 plugin compatibility changes, which are hard to test - so this build is marked as beta for now. If there are no major issues with the build, it will be released as a stable version next week.

Download as usual from
https://backstage.renoise.com

The betas are currently only available to registered Renoise users only: Demo versions will be uploaded as soon as the release goes stable.

Changes from Renoise 3.4.3 to 3.4.3 and Redux 1.3.2 to 1.3.3 Redux: Renoise:

Changes/Enhancements:

  • Slightly larger font sizes in 125%, 150%, 175% GUI scaling modes.

  • Windows: Smoother scrolling with touchpads.

  • Windows: HiDPI auto-scaling is now disabled by default for all plugins, but can still be enabled manually in the plugin compatibility settings.

Most newer plugins work well or well enough on HiDPI screens nowadays. The auto-scaling option there often caused broken UIs, especially when plugins use OpenGL, so disabling the auto-scaling seems like a better default.

When your older plugins now initially render incorrectly on your HiDPI screens (resulting in too small GUIs), try enabling auto-scaling, but check first if the plugin has a custom UI scaling setting to enlarge it.

If you have any problems with the new builds, please report them here, directly in this forum topic.

Noob question about sampling and Octave change

Renoise Forum - July 29, 2023 - 23:42

Hello!

Well this question has been bugging me for long time and I would like to get some info.

So lets say I record a sample in Note C and then insert it in Renoise pattern writing the original semi note lets say “C-3” But what happen if I change to D, C# etc? How can it be a D or E if the original sample was a note C?

If you have original instruments in Renoise or VST this “problem” will not occur because the notes coming straight from the instrument but not when sampling. How do people here work it out?

Maybe there is a sheet for this?

Cheers!

Just got a new MacBook Pro since my previous laptop died. Does somebody knows how to switch Fn keys on by default only when using Renoise in macOS Ventura? This was much easier with the Touch Bar version macbooks

Cheers!

Glitching with oversampling on effects within instrument

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2023 - 14:42

Hello!

I’ve stumbled across a bug which I’ve managed to reproduce reliably on my setup with the attached XRNS file. I suspect it may have something to do with renoise instruments that have multiple internal effects chains with oversampling switched on.

The instrument in this file has two drum samples over two keygroups, one with an effects chain (containing a Digital Filter) and the other without. I get very noticeable sample playback glitches, which also seem to sneak into rendered output. I can see the glitches appearing on phase view during playback.

Curiously the glitching occurs regardless of whether the Digital Filter is bypassed or active. Switching oversampling to OFF resolves the glitching.

Does this happen for anyone else? Could this be an issue with oversampling within instruments that have multiple effects chains on different samples?

Renoise file here
glitch.xrns (83.0 KB)

Setup:

  • Renoise 3.4.2
  • Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (1st Gen) Firmware 608 ASIO driver v.4.65.5
  • 48000 kHz Sample Rate at 512 buffer
  • CPU usage for this file approximately 01.5%

This can all be avoided by not using multiple effects chains within instruments or just switching Oversampling off, but just letting Renoise developers know in the interests of improving my beloved DAW of so many years

Working with 16 Lines x 4 Bar blocks

Renoise Forum - July 28, 2023 - 10:37

I am influenced by drum-machines like Korg ER and ESX. This somewhat recreates that workflow feel for me.

Put a small 4 line pattern in front to get all stuff synced up and initiated properly, or have some necessary commands there, like jump to pattern etc.

Let me talk to you about my Lord and Saviour - Kilohearts Snap Heap

Renoise Forum - July 26, 2023 - 13:45

Since I bought this plugin, which isn’t expensive:

Snap Heap, Snap Heap plugin, buy Snap Heap, download Snap Heap trial, (pluginboutique.com)

It has revolutionised using Renoise for me, as somebody who has really wanted parallel processing natively inside Renoise for as long as I’ve been using it really. In terms of electronic music production (which is my focus) it has made sound design so much fun and really helps get creative. It’s effectively a six slot FX processor, with heavy modulation possibilities. In terms of parallel processing, you can tie slots together and make them process in parallel rather than serial - if you leave one slot free (i.e. uneffected) and then put FX in the other slot set to fully wet, you can then blend them back together with the built in per-slot volumes.

Another benefit is the free “snaps” can be used as VST3 FX and because they’re all relatively simple, they look very much like Native FX in the track FX slots. I can’t recommend it enough, I will probably go on to buy some of the paid Snap-ins but haven’t done so yet. It’s very, very good (and no, I’m not sponsored lol).

Just wanted to share, I know a lot of people want this and until we get it natively, it’s an inexpensive way to plug one of Renoise’s (IMO) major gaps.
