Using track commands for a DSP parameter which falls outside of the hex limit using a static LFO (LFO Preset)

Renoise Forum - May 13, 2019 - 05:17

@EETTEE wrote:

I use FM8 FX a lot and it has a lot of parameters so it doesn’t let you use track commands for the plugin outside of a certain range. Instead of then resorting to automation you can:

  1. Bring up an LFO in the track
  2. Set the LFO to control the out of bounds parameter
  3. Set Amplitude to 100 and Offset to the center
  4. Hit the “custom” button and draw an env that is just a straight line in the middle (50)

Then you can control the parameter with the LFO’s offset slider.

Here is the LFO preset:

Zero-latency-limiter//Doofer

Renoise Forum - May 12, 2019 - 20:42

@Gilli wrote:

Hello everyone,
I happened to use Renoise in more live situations.
With a real-time-kernel and a good audio interface I can work with descent ~3ms on Linux.

To overcome the nature of added latency when using limiters or compressors, I thought it would be useful to have a 0-latency-limiter.

Signal path:

[SignalFollower] -> [Gainer] -> [Distortion]

What it basically does, is to apply a signal follower on a gainer. That alone wouldn’t really limit the signal in time unless we used the lookahead-feature, which in turn would introduce latency again. So we accept trade-off to have an initial clipping until the signal follower finally reduces the volume. The clipping is achieved through a distortion effect at the end of the chain. This way we get a zero-latency brickwall-limiting that only distorts in little (hopefully unnoticed) moments.

So what is it good for? Live processing (e.g. guitar, vocals or even a mix) where any added delay is not acceptable and you still want to avoid a lasting distortion caused by loud signals.

Ther doofer’s macro-knobs represent a basic limiter-funtionality: Input gain (pre-gainer), Threshold (Signal follower’s sensitivity), Release and Output (Distortion’s wet-volume).

ES-8 doesn't work in ASIO mode

Renoise Forum - May 12, 2019 - 15:15

@Medito wrote:

I have a problem with my ES-8 audio interface in Renoise.

It can never be initialized in ASIO mode, only in Direct Sound, which is useless to me since it only support two audio in and outs.
I Have three other DAWs I use (Reason 10, Bitwig 2.5 & 3b, FL Studio 20) and it works like a charm in every single one of them, even in Windows 10 as a Primary sound card, just not Renoise.
I tried various sample rates, reinstalling the driver but none of it helps.
Any ideas or am I just out of luck?

Tool idea: Render selection to sample & turn off trackdsp

Renoise Forum - May 12, 2019 - 08:43

@Jonas wrote:

Perhaps it already exists somewhere? But I’m looking for a tool (keyboard shortcut) which can render a pattern editor selection to sample, but turns off all trackdsp beforehand and turns them back on after rendering finishes.

Right now you have to manually do this, if you want to achieve a seamless sound, using the pattern renders back in the original track, not sounding like the fx are stacked.

I know I can use pattern renders in a new track which doesn`t have any fx, but sometimes you want to keep things in the same track for better oversight.

Would save a bunch of mouse clicks .

Setting Local FX via Lua API

Hello all! New to renoise and really enjoying it.

I am wondering how to set the local fx of a note column via the Lua API. The documentation covers setting a track’s master fx, but I can’t seem to find how to set local fx. Is this supported?

Thanks

Stupid question: Renoise is located in ~/rns_3_1_1_linux_x86_64 on my system. I can execute it with ./renoise while being in that path. But how can I execute it from everywhere with just the command renoise? I tried to include the folder in my path variables, but it doesn’t work.

now’s a good time to check it out!

STRiP-O-MAT (MultiFX//Doofer)

Strip-o-mat was moddelled after a discount plugin which i buyed cheap online and what didnt seem to special at all. It is pretty decent after I tried to recreate this in Renoise it turned out the limititations of renoise/doofer too.

Here the description of the idea-giver:

_
Space Strip is a multi-effect plugin featuring 6 modules: Contour, Vibe, Slapback, Ambience, Ensemble, and Stereo. The modules can be arranged in any combination by simple drag-n-drop. Space Strip will add depth and space to your sounds, especially synth and keyboards. The plugin is optimised to be lightweight on the CPU._

Here my new (simple vers.) Doofer:
#STRiP-O-MAT.xrdp (10.0 KB)

Also STRiPPED down to only 5 (makes more sense ins.Renoise) MODULS:

  • ViBE , stereo vibrato
  • SLAPi , short echo module
  • AMBi , short reverb module
  • ENSi , multi-voices chorus//flanger
  • STERi , stereo manipulation

Tool or Icons for raise / lower volume of selected part of sample?

Renoise Forum - May 9, 2019 - 23:14

@djnick wrote:

I really love Renoise Sample editor. In past few months I am using it daily for clearing vocals for videos, cartoons and composed songs and before I add compressor on whole sample track / song, I create all peaks to be nearly the same height.

To make “non-clickable” volumes, I enable “snap” icon and then select sample, part by part and each time I raise or lower volume by hitting “F10” key which will bring me “Adjust Volume” window where I either RAISE or LOWER sample selection for + or - 0,500 or 1 dB.

I’ve also configured CTRL + SPACE to “Silence Selection” (much faster than previously: hit F10, set volume to -INF dB and hit enter for process)

I have question:

1 - Is there easier way to adjust volume for default 1 dB without need to hit and oper F10 window? It would be fantastic if there will be buttons to + or - sample selection directly in Sample editor. Maybe it would be possible to create (and add short-cut key) macro or script that would speed up working with samples a lot?

2 - I have one more question: when I zoom sample (with middle mouse button wheel), would it be possible to set “middle mouse button” key to act as “hand tool” (or “Alt” + “Middle Mouse Button” for scrolling zoomed sample left/right? The only way (that I know) is - zoom sample and watch it left/right by holding “LEFT ALT” and “mouse wheel”?

3 - Is there possibility to enable helping “guide lines” in background of the Sample instead pure black background, as seen, for example, in old WaveLab software. Those guide lines are 50% below and 50% above sample’s central line (which represents “0” / Zero. Above is +100%, below is -100%. Guide lines are on 50% and would help a lot for clearing and fixing samples volumes - matching guide lines height, for example.

4 - And finally - Are there possibility to open “Modulation” tab OVER “Waveform” tab so we can easily make for example - volumes on samples (that would be non-destructive), as seen in WaveLab or Adobe Premiere (where you can see wave below video in time-line where you can add volume, reverb, compressor and many other basic effects)? If yes - how?

Modulation tab is not very useful as you work on “what you hear” instead - “what you see” (as expected), for more precise work. I guess - there is some “hidden” button to show sample in the background of “Modulation” tab

Cheers!

Arturia CMI V VST does not show up in the plugin list

Renoise Forum - May 9, 2019 - 23:02

@svenfux wrote:

Hi!

I’m having a bit of trouble getting the Arturia CMI V VST to work with Renoise.
it USED to work, but I suddenly got an error-message when trying to load it.

The Renoise log tells me the following:

VstPlugs: Trying to instantiate C:\Program Files\VstPlugins\CMI V.dll
VstPlugs: Instantiate FAILED (caught structured exception) !!!

Audio Plugins: Failed to open plug VST: CMI V

Exception: Failed to initialize the plugin ‘VST: Arturia: CMI V’.

Error Message: Failed to initialize the plugin ‘VST: Arturia: CMI V’

  • I uninstalled the plugin through Arturia’s Software Center and did a fresh install (The version that is installed now is a newer version that the one I had installed previously).
  • I reopened Renoise and Rescanned previously failed plugins, but now it disappeared from the list of Plugins.
  • I double checked that the DLL was indeed in the installed location (the location that is scanned by Renoise).
  • I renamed CachedFailedVSTs_x64.db and CachedVSTs_x64.db and they were rebuilt, but the VST is still missing from the list after restarting (and rescanning) Renoise.
  • I tried, as a test, to load the VST throught Ableton Live 9 and it works perfectly fine. It also works to run it as a standalone.

The weird thing is that it’s only this VST that doesn’t load. All the other Arturia V collection VST’s load without any issues.

I’m using Renoise 3.1 64bit with Windows 10.
The VST is question is also 64bit (32bit version does not exist).

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Does it have any specific mixing weaknesses?

A small request about a detail: When entering multiple lines into column or track names, the GUI object seem to render the text vertically centered, meaning that the middle line is shown (if uneven amount of numbers) or two half lines are shown (if even amount of lines).

It would be nice if the top line was always rendered, making it possible to decide what is being presented to the user when the multiline “feature” is being exploited.

Controlling what's focused on

Renoise Forum - May 8, 2019 - 06:56

@Dry_Eyes wrote:

I want to post a little about controlling what part of the song the audience should focus on. Now, of course, you could say that control is bad. We don’t need control. Down with the controllers. BUT, when you want to lead the audience from one part of a song to another in a way that’s cohesive and doesn’t just sound like a mish-mash of sound, there are tricks.

I have to admit to using one that I’m putting up for consideration. Basically, you selectively drown out other tracks with whatever you’re trying to put the focus on.

Yes, you drown out the sound. It turns the background tracks into kind of an ambient wash. This is actually exclusively how I compose. Some tracks come in, and they sort of drown out other tracks. I don’t low-pass anything or hi-pass or bandpass anything, I just make sure what comes in sounds good and holds the attention, and let it drown out what’s not supposed to hold the atttention. Then when I silence certain tracks it causes other tracks to stand out, and so on.

I know that this could be considered a cheap trick, amateurish, but dammit I come from a DIY background originally and cheap production is the name of the game in genres influenced by that ethos. Not so much in electronic music though…

ALTHOUGH, when I compose I do tend to keep different octaves separate, like I don’t practice “close” harmony, I tend to put the harmonizing note on another octave. So there is that…

What do other producers think of this technique/idea?
