Rock Jacket - arcadessa
Rock Jacket is my side project, here’s a short cohesive little release.
https://rockjacket.bandcamp.com/album/arcadessa
‘pelimusa’ starts us off catchy and introduces the elements of the release - rapid drums with chiptune bleeps.
‘artefakti’ has some more musical exploration in the image of old arcade cabinets.
‘turbo’ revolves around distinguishable rhythmic patterns augmented with bass melodies.
‘vastus’, while having its own theme, features a medley of the other 3 tracks.

Can vb:switch have individual "slot" widths?
i’m about to modify my Wipe&Slice settings a bit by adding BeatSync “OFF” but I’d like to not increase the width of the vb:switch object. is there a way to set individual vb switch element widths?
so off could be width=20 but a longer text could be width=300 or sommat

Disabling tools removes their keybinding
A minor glitch. While trying to find a buggy tool I had to disable a few and noticed that by doing so it removes their keybindings, shouldn’t that only be happening on uninstall?

Instrument: Option for forcing VST-specific sampling rate
Once in a while I notice certain VSTs don’t account for the host software’s sampling rate, and calculate their oscillations/etc under a hard-coded assumption that the host software uses 44100hz – for example, older versions of ZynAddSubFX exhibited this problem. So if Renoise uses a different native sampling rate other than 44100hz, the VST produces off-key sounds.
For an individual Instrument which uses such VST plugins, an optional setting that would let the user select a forced VST-specific sampling rate, and then Renoise would natively upscale/downscale the outputted sound to transparently sound natural under Renoise’s native sampling rate, would be very helpful.

Convolver Reload Only Activates After Loading IR If Preset Is Not Init
Just as the title says. Also does the same thing after choosing a preset then selecting ‘Init’ again.

Modulation External Editor Doesn't Resize For Macros
In the Modulation section, insert an Envelope or Stepper device and hit the ‘Ext. Editor’ button. Now open the Macros panel. The External Editor will not shrink to make room. Likewise, opening the Macros panel before pressing the ‘Ext. Editor’ button and then closing Macros again will not expand the External Editor into the space available.

How do you do pitch bends and portamento in Redux?
I see that Redux has a pitch bend slider, which can be automated using MIDI pitch bend commands, but it doesn’t actually affect the note’s pitch.

Renoise Matrix + Magnifier Win11 issue
A small compatibility issue.
In the Renoise Matrix panel, using “CTRL + ALT + mouse wheel rotation” allows you to zoom horizontally of the Matrix.
If you use Windows 11 Magnifier, it seems that this control is stolen by Windows 11 Magnifier, so it doesn’t work, even if Renoise is in the foreground…

Track presets - idea
Maybe I’m getting lazy on my old days but hey…
We have all made the perfect track for some instrument and want to reuse it later, the device chain is obviously tailored to the instrument so wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to save a track with its devices and instruments used in the track and maybe just the currently selected pattern notes.
Maybe even save a whole group of tracks as a preset would be cool and then a nice way of organizing these presets… maybe we could make this as a tool but then it should be possible to save to disk?

Fast scrolling through patterns in Matrix stutters (Renoise 3.4.4)
Description:
Scrolling isn’t smooth in Renoise 3.4.4 but stutters and jags
Window 10, Nvidia RTX 2070 Super with latest drivers
32gb ram and 8 cores, Babyface Pro etc
Enough hardware for smooth scrolling
Steps to reproduce look like this:
- Launch Renoise 3.4.4
- Open any the song
- Click in the Pattern Matrix
- Press ctrl down
- Wait for acceleration
Expected results:
Smooth scrolling, straight down like it does in Renoise 3.3.1 for example.
Actual results:
It goes 2 lines up, one line down, 3 lines up, 2 lines down.
Jumps all over the place

How to apply FX Chain to each sample slice
Sorry if this has been posted before - but I was wondering if after I slice a sample, and lets say each slice I have linked to a different FX chain , so each sample has its own effects. Can I reneder each slice to then not require the effect chain , but the slices are still maintained so i can further manipulate each slice?
I thought the render slices destructively would do this but it seems to keep the FX chains intact, infact I do not know what the point of rendering slices destructively is if all it does is just maintain the original sample ?

More UI scaling options (Scale Levels)
I often work with many Renoise applications running simultaneously.
To display the disk browser, etc. on each of the many Renoise windows, Wayland (sway) on Linux can use a scaled-down view, but Renoise windows using the Xwayland process have a blurry display, making them less usable.
I am thinking that this might be solved by enabling a scaled-down view in the scaling settings of Renoise.
The increments of the setting value should be 90%-10% in 10% increments, etc. Ideally, the API should be used to specify the value.

Can i not layer 120 samples?
hi, i wanna load 120 snares.
i have a script that lets me use a midiknob for setting volume to 0.0dB for selected sample and -INF dB for the rest of them.
but when i load 120 snares, and click “Layer”, only the last 12 of them actually play, the rest don’t.
is there a limitation for “how many samples can play in layered mode”?

Increasing lifespan of your macos ssds
Hi,
macos notoriously writes lot of data to your ssd. Most extreme system services here are 1. logd and 2. spotlight / mds
For example, leaving macos 14.5 like 1 day in use, the logd process often already wrote several tenth of gigabytes.
A usual ssd will last like 250-1000TBW (terabytes written). The crucial part for an ssd lifespan is the amount of written data. You can get these infos about your ssd using a SMART tool, e.g. smartmontools.
While Windows might be even worse in constantly writing data, macos isn’t good at all either. In my opinion, they could easily reduce the amount of data write by a lot, simply adding configuration possibilities and having a better default config.
On my mbp pro 16 m1pro, which I use since middle 2021, the total data written is 18TB. But I also don’t use a lot of spotlight, or installing system updates, which would increase the number. On the other system, my hackintosh running 10.14.6, I already have a reduced logging and disabled a lot of spotlight, there the total written data is like 4TB, this after over 5 years.
For 1.), the logd, you can drastically reduce the data written by yourself. For this, you need to edit the /etc/asl.conf file in a text editor. This is the configuration for the log daemons. Make sure to backup the original file first.
Here is my current config:
## # configuration file for syslogd and aslmanager ## # aslmanager logs > /var/log/asl/Logs/aslmanager external style=lcl-b ttl=2 # authpriv messages are root/admin readable ? [= Facility authpriv] access 0 80 # remoteauth critical, alert, and emergency messages are root/admin readable ? [= Facility remoteauth] [<= Level critical] access 0 80 # broadcast emergency messages ? [= Level emergency] broadcast # save kernel [PID 0] and launchd [PID 1] messages #? [<= PID 1] store # ignore "internal" facility ? [= Facility internal] ignore # save everything from emergency to notice #? [<= Level notice] store ? [<= Level error] store ? [= Level activity] ignore ? [= Level default] ignore # Rules for /var/log/system.log > system.log mode=0640 format=bsd rotate=seq compress file_max=5M all_max=50M #? [= Sender kernel] file system.log #? [<= Level notice] file system.log #? [= Facility auth] [<= Level info] file system.log #? [= Facility authpriv] [<= Level info] file system.log ? [= Sender kernel] [<= Level error] file system.log ? [<= Level error] file system.log ? [= Facility auth] [<= Level info] file system.log ? [= Facility authpriv] [<= Level info] file system.log # Facility com.apple.alf.logging gets saved in appfirewall.log #? [= Facility com.apple.alf.logging] file appfirewall.log file_max=5M all_max=50M ? [= Facility com.apple.alf.logging] ignore # restart: sudo killall -HUP syslogdThe changes seem to prevent writing of any event happening. Instead, only essential logs like errors and logins will be written from now on. Keep in mind that all other stuff still seems to be logged, but not written anymore, instead kept in a memory buffer or similar.
You can look at the log entries by entering “sudo log show --last 1m” in terminal. The amount of log entries is immense. No wonder that it quickly can fill your ssd with repeating writes.
For 2), spotlight, the story is quite more difficult now.
macos prior to Big Sur allowed to modify the system partition easily. That’s why you could disable a lot of Spotlight plugins which are located in /System/Library/Spotlight, simply by moving out most of those plugins to a backup dir. For example, I don’t need archive or pdf neither coremedia scanning. By moving out these plugins, the amount of written data by spotlight while indexing is reduced heavily. Note that disabling PDFs in the spotlight options does not seem to reduce anything. I assume that still everything will be scanned then, but filtered out, so Apple still gets your full contents.
The ideal approach would be:
- Disabling not required spotlight pliugins/mdimporters
- Only leaving spotlight for third party, Mail and simple application search
- Using a much better search tool additionally like Quicksilver
I also looked for a way to disable mdimporters using launchctl or similar, but seems to be impossible… Maybe I should make a apfs snapshot of the system partition, then make it temporarily writable, remove those files, and enable write lock again? But this will be removed as soon there is a system update. I also do not know how macos likes custom snapshots of the system partition…
Any idea here?
P.S. Sadly you can’t simply disable Spotlight services completely, because even some system apps rely on it, e.g. search in Mail.app or search in System Preferences.app.
