Drum roll ladies and gentlemen........Piano Roll please!

Renoise Forum - March 29, 2020 - 22:28

@Zooby wrote:

Hi Folks,

Please forgive me. I totally understand that this has been mentioned and talked about so many times before on the forum, but I just feel compelled to say this.

I’m also fully aware that Renoise is a tracker. However, for me (and I’m sure many more) a Piano Roll would be sooooo helpful. EDM has changed a lot in the last 10 years. It’s a lot more melodic and has more sophisticated chord progressions than it used to have. Renoise is without doubt my go-to DAW, always. Nothing can beat it for me. I’ve been with trackers since day one from the Amiga days and it’s how I work.

But for more complex chord progressions and melodies, I have to say…FL studio gets booted up. Sometimes I save the pattern in FL studio as midi and import it into Renoise. Sometimes I freeze the part in FL and rip the whole pattern as a sample into Renoise.

A piano roll would prevent the need for this. In fact, it would put FL Studio in the bin. Completely.

All my tracks are made with Renosie. Two have been released on Matrix Music Records. But I’ve had to use FL Studio for a lot of the chord and melody work. It’s just easier for me on a piano roll.

As mentioned at the start, I know that Renoise is a tracker, but a piano roll might open up the program to more users. How hard can a piano roll be to program? Isn’t it just a big table that you paint blocks onto? It can’t be hard to do? I’d do it myself if I even knew anything about Lua scripting.

Peace out

Zak

Sound Forge for beat slicing/processing

Renoise Forum - March 29, 2020 - 18:13

@kriyananda wrote:

Dear Friends,
after reading here and there on the forum about it, I wanted to try Sound Forge Audio Studio 12.5 to process beats, and do some mangling/slicing/rearranging.

I’m getting mad for I’ve read here on this forum that a few fellow Renoise users do employ SF to manipulate breaks and then throw them in our favourite tracker and manipulate them further with Sxx effect.

I’ve been trying to learn something about it, both by reading the manual, both by searching tutorial vids on YT.

But there’s is something that I absolutely don’t get.

Though I’ve learned how to slice samples, I’m having really a hard time to figure out how to rearrange them, also because the visual space you have just covers the whole sample you put in and you can’t zoom out any further.

As for the “open and append” function, things are not improving much, I really feel claustrophobic.

Yet, I’m sure this is a great software and I can see there are some very good and advanced features that, fair enough, are not present in our beloved tracker.

So I would be very grateful if somebody can provide some help.

I hope this is not considered OT and yes, I can see this is not a SF forum

Thank you soooo much

Simone

Step length per track

Renoise Forum - March 29, 2020 - 18:07

@podf wrote:

For really complex, evolving and well just weird polyrhytmic music - it would be awesomely amazing if each track could have individual step lengths! I imagine each track would loop by itself separately from the others in the same pattern.

I’m new to Renoise though, maybe something like this is possible already?

Polyend Tracker : RenoiseCAN open tracks made in the hardware!

Renoise Forum - March 29, 2020 - 12:39

@Tumulte wrote:

You know what I’ve always been missing in renoise : a good hardware solution
You know why I will not buy Polyend tracker ? It’s too limited… and I already got Renoise.

But, if, somehow, you two companies could hookup… now we have a match made in heaven.

Ideally if Polyend tracker could control Renoise, that’d be fantastic, but I think I’d be more realistic to ask for export capabities : drafting a track on the hardware, then finishing it up on Renoise.

If we are enough to politely ask… I’ve already shot a message at polyend

Yoshimi vst, another gem

Renoise Forum - March 28, 2020 - 21:29

@The_Traveler wrote:

Yoshimi: http://yoshimi.sourceforge.net/ is a fork off the zynaddsubfx code tree.

If you could have only one vst this might be the one. Yes, like it’s parent zynaddsubfx it’s a beast. However, for sheer sonic capabilities the two are hard to beat and well worth the learning curve. The feature listing on the Yoshimi homepage reveals more about it’s incredible array of features.

As a diehard linux user (ubuntu-based) I appreciate that the current version of Yoshimi can be installed using a package manager. There are tons of presets available (installable using the package manager as well). The developers also provide native install packages for practically every mainstream linux distro out there, .deb, .yum, .rpm, etc.

I found Yoshimi to have excellent sound quality, responsive controls and not too hard on the cpu. Complex presets can push up the cycles but nothing terrible. Like the YFM262 and YF2612 vsts I posted about earlier Yoshimi runs standalone and flawlessly in Renoise.

I hope you’ll check it out and may find it useful. Cheers.

A Sampler 'idea' I'm wondering about

Renoise Forum - March 28, 2020 - 15:25

@Neuro_No_Neuro wrote:

As many of you know, I’m fascinated with microsound techniques and audio motion within the confines of Renoise and its engine. Via @Raul, I’ve been able to do some great new tracks with the SMC Tool.

In this case, I’m looking at the ‘draw’ option of the Sampler.

Let’s say I want to make a ‘ticking’ sound at 10 samples in length. This is how I do it:

  1. Go to a blank sample screen
  2. Create a new sample
  3. Choose a length of 10 samples
  4. Make sure it’s not set to ‘loop’
  5. Draw the click’s ‘shape’.
  6. Modulate the sample via the sequencer for volume/delay/FX

Is there any way, with LUA perhaps, to create a randomized sample shape device that one could set to an LFO?

I know the easy way to do this is to just generate a bunch of 10 sample-length samples by hand, and dump 'em all in a sampler and set it to round-robin.

I can imagine this would be a texture-generator of sorts, where the ticking sound would change in tonality only very slightly, as it’s only 10 samples in length. It’s REALLY short. Using my imagination, if the sample were longer, it would provide a more audible variation.

If this were set to loop, then one would have a constantly changing wave-shape.

The question is: Are these variables available within Renoise to modulate the sample’s shape via LUA? Could this be turned into a device that anybody could use?

Ignoring the term ‘real time’ (meaning, immediately after pressing the space bar to start the sequencer), is this a possibility? Could it happen after a second or two?

I am not a programmer, I do not know what LUA can or cannot modulate, I cannot read the code. I only know that there are people programming in LUA that know how to modulate a ton of stuff via the code.

Playback Issue *URGENT*

Renoise Forum - March 28, 2020 - 14:06

@Chezwa wrote:

Hey guys, so i’m new to Renoise and I’ve been remaking my own Amen Breaks by using the original Amen break sample and chopping it up etc, having so much fun. But, for some unknown reason, renoise has started playing my samples back in a choppy way… And i’ve stupidly overwritten the old project file and it won’t play back normally now… i’ve even bounced it out and the bounce is still choppy.

Heres an example of what it USED to sound like (named “Amens Temporary”) and the edited version that has now started playing back funny. (named “Broken”).:-

wetransfer.com Amens - Temporary.wav and 1 more file

This is for a uni project due very soon so its kinda urgent! Not sure what button I have pressed for it to do this? It was all running so smoothly

Hope you guys can help!

Kindest Regards, Happy quarantine!

YFM262 and YF2612 vsts

Renoise Forum - March 28, 2020 - 02:51

@The_Traveler wrote:

Looking for some FM retro for your mix? I stumbled across these 2 little gems the other day: https://github.com/jpcima/ADLplug

I use a ubuntu-based setup so I downloaded the .deb files for each and installed them without any problems. The interfaces are super clean and controls quick and responsive. They both come with gm-oriented preset banks and some “collections” but if you scroll down to the “Useful links” on the page, there are links to “Bank Editor Software”. I downloaded both and found additional presets in the zip files (some duplication).

The Bank Editor software looks interesting but I haven’t compiled either version for linux yet. There are executable versions for Win and Mac though. Looks like they will convert a large number of chip formats.

The vsts need jack to run and if you use qjackctl: https://qjackctl.sourceforge.io/ you can start up jack and then either vst will run standalone or in a rack. I fired up Renoise 3.2.1 which starts jack on my system automatically and both vsts scanned in and worked perfectly.

The sound quality is excellent and the cpu hits are minimal. It would be easy to run several in a single song instance.

Anyway, you may find them useful. Cheers.

Hi there!

Okay it’s isolation time for lot of us… But maybe because I’m doing some dance at home now, I paid attention to latin rythms and finaly made a short track with.

TIP: Then, as I’m a latin-music newbie, I first picked a piano sample sequence, and completely re-sequenced it by ear to play this sequence with various notes and synths.

Renoise EQ crackling

Just found a strange thing with the Renoise EQ. In the attached files there’s only a kick on track 1 and one EQ and a dip at 100 Hz.
When you loop the beat for a while you will hear some crackling noise that comes and goes. I assume it’s caused by the EQ which phase shifts the signal which leads to some kind of beat frequency. I tried another EQ from Overtone and with this I can’t hear it. Anyone ever stumbled over this?

Renoise Forum - March 27, 2020 - 22:58

@Raul wrote:

ModFXRender. Description

ModFXRender is a massive sample rendering tool. It can take advantage of sample modulation sets, sample effect sets, phrases or track DSP effects to return rendered samples with these features. It also allows working with the initial and final silences of each sample, normalize and extend samples.

Keyboard Commands
  • [SPACE] render/cancel.
  • [CTRL Z] undo
  • [CTRL Y] redo
Access
  • Renoise: Tools/ ~ModFXRender…
  • Renoise: Waveform: Right clic: ~ModFXRender (Auto-Render)…

The “Auto-Render” shortcut will work with the last set configuration. ModFXRender saves all preferences automatically for new sessions.

The screenshot is descriptive enough. Take a look at its capabilities:

This tool was built during the Covid-19 Pandemic (March 2020), programmed by ulneiz (Spain).
