Bristol (free) synths (for linux)

Renoise Forum - January 20, 2021 - 12:05

Hi everyone!
I just stumbled upon this (free) suite of synths.

bristol.sourceforge.net Bristol Audio Onepager
Since i’m not on linux, can anyone give me an overview of how they sound/behave under Renoise/Ardour?
i’m excited, because the library of synths is huge + it’s free…

edit: ok i see now that some plugins are ‘not operable’ from the page (mixer), but looking at the homepage and the list looks so damn awesome:)

Thanks

Recording a note OFF delay in the pattern editor

Renoise Forum - January 19, 2021 - 19:53

Hi,
I’d like to record a Note OFF at the same line as a note trigger, but with a delay, in order to have a shorter-than-one-line trigger.
Is it possible to do that without cranking up the LPB to 8, 16, 32 or even higher for very short notes?
Note that I don’t want a volume cut (as is obtained with the CXX sample command) but a note OFF with the same behaviour as any other note-OFF

Offtopic talk from "I would like to hear your music made with Renoise and other Daws"

Renoise Forum - January 19, 2021 - 19:19

I spent a lot of time browsing and listening to music from this topic and I am broken.

Is it really (with few exceptions) everything what people made now? Noisy modern techno-like styles or chillout-ambient background music without any content? Almost without any melody (riffs / themes / whatever you call it) so safe that it may be play on three keys? It’s like listening Reggae, Rock or Metal with one riff that repeats over and over.

No, really, instead of spending 4 hours of finding good instrument and preset that plays nice by itself, most of people here should spend that time to learn how to come up with some interesting. It may be crazy jazz theme, synthwave theme solo using three octaves or more, aggressive unusual theme, rock riff that is unique etc.

Less pomposity in searching for majestic sounds, more composing! Sometimes people want to just listen something interesting, not just testing expensive headphones .

It’s just my personal opinion. Nobody must agree with that.

PS. I’m just listening that “Welcome Home” song and it’s surprisingly nice and fresh, even if mixing/mastering is probably much worse than other songs here.

Best Drum Pad Sp1200/MPC style controller?

Renoise Forum - January 19, 2021 - 17:22

Hope you all good.

I am looking for a basic (basically not Maschine or anything over $200) drum pad sequencer that I can use with Renoise. I understand that any controller will work but I am looking for sth that I can throw a few samples into using my PC and then turn off the screen and make some simple hip hop style beats. The ability to control pitch/volume and play/record is pretty much all I want.

I am not looking to ‘replace’ Renoise with this, I just want to be able to come up with some basic rhythms that I can then work on properly (meaning turn monitor back on) and craft the rhythms more with VSTs etc.

I was thinking about IRIG Pads or AKAI MPD, or even sth a little more obscure like this https://www.musicexpress.pl/pl/product/17466,dna-m-pad-przenosny-interfejs-kontroler-midi-usb

Forgive my description of needs, hope it is understandable.

Thanks in advance.

Heavy on Me (Takao Remix)

Renoise Forum - January 19, 2021 - 13:38

Hi folks,

Just had a new remix come out of Arnie Wrong’s Heavy on Me. One for the summer, hopefully when we can start dancing at festivals again!

You can have a listen here on Soundcloud:

Or on Spotify here:

Spotify Heavy on Me - Takao Remix

Heavy on Me - Takao Remix, a song by Arnie Wrong, Takao on Spotify

It’d be interesting to know where you guys listen to music now? I was exclusively soundcloud but have found myself on a combination of Bandcamp and Spotify more and more (YouTube as well but I find I get distracted there).

What are your top Renoise tools?

Renoise Forum - January 19, 2021 - 13:28

So many tools have been vital for me in making music on renoise.

I’d have to say the following are ESSENTIAL to me:

Convert Instrument Number https://www.renoise.com/tools/convert-instrument-number
SimpleSlicer https://www.renoise.com/tools/simpleslicer or SampleSlicer https://www.renoise.com/tools/sample-slicer or Chop Sample https://www.renoise.com/tools/chop-sample
Easytune (nasty but quick - sometimes works) https://www.renoise.com/tools/easy-tune
MultiVolumes https://www.renoise.com/tools/multi-volumes
ZeroCrossings https://www.renoise.com/tools/zerocrossings
Copy Automation https://www.renoise.com/tools/copy-automation

I think there was one for randomisation of fx values, but I can’t find it! Anyone know?

Honorable mention:
Guru https://www.renoise.com/tools/guru

What do you use??

MIDI / Sample chase possible?

Renoise Forum - January 18, 2021 - 19:12

Hi Everyone,

I have a query…

Is it possible to have midi/sample chase in Renoise.

Meaning being able to hear/start a note either from a midi instrument or sample in the middle of its’ length.
It’s an extremely useful setting, that prevents you from also having to play from the beginning (huge time saver!). Also if you are making longer ambient or drone things, it would make it so much more possible in Renoise

Because of the tracker interface, I’m not even sure if it is possible - if it is though, how can I engage the setting?

If it does not exist yet and it is possible, perhaps a feature request?

Thanks!

The problem with more frequent releases ! (not really, I'd just love permanent settings ;)

Renoise Forum - January 18, 2021 - 10:33

It is really brilliant that Renoise is updated more often, the only downside is that (on mac at least) the settings are reset to default (midi map, themes…)

The best possible solution would be a built in updater with in-app update notification…

The less best option would be that stuffs remain the way they are after install

Glitchy GUI and crashes (again) with Vember Surge (latest version)

Renoise Forum - January 17, 2021 - 19:50

Just loaded the latest Vember Surge version (Latest Release: 1.8.0 (2021-01-17 )) in the latest Renoise version (3.3.1) and the glitchy GUI (together with crashes) is back. This was fixed, but they seem to change / break something.

This is on Ubuntustudio 20.04 with XFCE.

Sending note off triggers note (Odin) istead of switching off VST

Renoise Forum - January 17, 2021 - 19:42

Don’t know what wrong here, mute sending note off to all instruments triggers notes in Odin and it’s not possbile to stop it. I order the track has to be started (that Odin is playing) and stopped. After that sending note off to all VSTs triggers notes.

This happens on Ubuntustudio 20.04 but is likely platform independent.
Used Odin version 2.2.4

What are you even doing on my w e b s i t e for offline practice and when I am dead

Renoise Forum - January 17, 2021 - 18:08

I am making my websites snapshot backup for when I am dead or mad or ill in 2000 years.
For now, it would require me to pay $5 per month for the .exe and .zip downloads to be enabled. (software, XM_EatMe_-_Break_Top.zip, ChordLord.xrnx)
Buuut all the pages and music downloads and plays and visuals are running regardless of this…

please test the backup and let me know what does not work yet!
I already know the presskit link is not working.

original site: http://eatme.pro
backup: http://ietmie.neocities.org for when I am no longer available…

I also need (infinite financing) of $5 per month.

How to make a Phrase Swapper like Redux's Sample Swapper?

Renoise Forum - January 17, 2021 - 13:15

Hi,

I like the “Sample Swapper Tutorial Song” on Redux and I wonder if there is a way to swap between phrases in the same way, using the macros panel? I would like to swap by using an external controller.

Or maybe there is a way to map the Zxx command with a midi controller?

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Best regards.

New tool (3.3.0) Automated Sample Recording From MIDI Enabled Hardware

Renoise Forum - January 16, 2021 - 22:40

Automated Sample Recording From Hardware Description

This tool is to help automate the process of creating a Renoise instrument directly from sounds from a piece of MIDI capable hardware, such as as a synthesizer.

For example, I have a Korg Volca FM, which can make some interesting sounds. To make a Renoise instrument from these sounds, I have to record samples at various notes/octaves, normalize the sample volume, remove leading silence, and map the sample to a key zone.

This tool does all of that for you automatically and hands free. It starts recording a sample, sends a MIDI signal to your device to have it play a note, and processes the sample. Repeat for as many octaves and/or notes as you want.

Demo Download

Get it here: https://github.com/verdog/renoise-hardware-sampler/releases

This is a beta relase. Everything works from my perspective, but I would appreciate any reports of things that don’t work or are confusing. Thanks!

ReWire Input Routing for Renoise as secondary (slave) audio

Renoise Forum - January 16, 2021 - 22:18

I use Renoise as rewire secondary (slave) in Reaper, and use Reaper to send recorded midi events to it. This workflow is really great for me for lots of reasons, basically I prefer the DAW-like interface to the tracker for entering notes, but love the flexibility of Renoise sampling capabilities.

What I sometimes do though is record a live audio track into Reaper to go along with the midi events that are being synthesized by Renoise. Everything works, but I can’t mix the live audio track in Renoise, because the ReWire Input only works when Renoise is the ReWire primary (master). Instead, I have to use Reaper plugins/etc. to mix the live audio track, while everything else I mix in Renoise.

If this routing plugin could work with Renoise as the ReWire secondary, then I could send audio to it from any live tracks I record in Reaper. This (I think) would let me do all my mixing and track effects in Renoise, which would really help keep things cohesive.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Side note to the devs: absolutely love Renoise! In my teens and 20s I did a ton of music in ST3 and IT but the tracker note entry interface for me just never really gelled as a way to make music. Sample based music OTOH-- that part I always loved and found so inspiring. Reanoise has so many wonderful, creative features for working with samples and is so incredibly rock solid as a piece of software art. So for me, being able to use a DAW to record midi notes while having a tracker-like sound engine to play with has been so much fun. Adding live recording on top of that is a really fun prospect.
