Renoise blocks all other apps from using sound while open (Ubuntu Studio 21.10)
Apologies if this has been asked before, or if the title kinda sucks.
I’m using Renoise 3.3.2 on Ubuntu Studio 21.10. Whenever Renoise is open no other app seems to be allowed to use sound. I’ve tested this with a few programs; Audacity and YouTube won’t even play their media, and Discord voice chat goes silent. They start working once Renoise is closed.
I’m not sure what type of problem this is. I’d appreciate help if this is fixable.

How to attain soundscape like this (RE2)?
Does anyone know which vst synth could be capable for creating sounds like this? Preferably free and cpu-friendly. And for macOS! I know Omnisphere would definitely do it but it’s out of the question for me cus of the reasons mentioned above…

Im aiming at achieving this kind of soundscape for my ambient composings. All the tips are warmly appreciated.

Is there any way to get the Hex Visual Keyboard in Renoise?
I really like the hex keyboard from Redux when I’m using my laptop. I usually use a controller when composing but, I have been working out of town more lately. I recently started playing with redux just to check it out. (Purchased at launch to support the Devs but, I don’t use it as Renoise is my daily driver.) I would love to have the visual keyboard in Renoise as a reference since I usually don’t use the keyboard. Anyone know a way to add this to Renoise so it will show up in the main editor?
Thanks,

Beginnner/Intermediate with a few questions
I’ve got a few questions that have been nagging me for a while now so hoping someone can help me out.
- Sampler vs Synthesizer
So far I have been doing all of my sound design inside of the sampler using the stock waveforms. The other day I installed Vital synth and I couldn’t help but notice the difference in sound quality compared to synthesis in the sampler. In Vital everything sounded huge and rich whereas in the sampler, synths sound kind of thin and ‘wispy’.
Is this to be expected, and a limitation of using samplers for synthesis, or am I just not using the sampler to its full potential? Can anyone explain what is going on below the surface and the difference between the two.
It’s hard to put this question into words as I don’t know too much about synthesis but the way I see it is something like analog vs digital, with hardware synths supposedly sounding better than software synths, having a distinct ‘analog sound’, ‘sounding warm’ etc.
Is this the same when it comes to using the sampler compared to a vst for synthesis?
- Master track and Volume
What effects do you put on your master? and do you use those same effects for every track you make?
How about the gainer and maximizer, in what circumstance would you use these effects? Also there seems like a lot of ways to change the volume of instruments, tracks etc. I’m just wondering how you manage your volume and whether there is any benefit to the way you do it?
- Tuner
Can anyone recommend a good Tuner that is compatible with Linux?
- Different approaches to sound design in general
Finally I just wanted to know how you guys approach sound design. Whether you use Hardware, the sampler or vst’s?
There is a video on the Renoise YT page called ‘Using Plugins - Render To Samples’. This feature looks amazing and I might go down this route for sound design so I can use soft synths and use little CPU. Does anyone here do this?
Tried to keep this post as short as possible. I know there is a lot of questions so please just answer whatever you can. Thanks!

Expanded automatable per track groove controls
I’d love to see this added. Not just like the current Master Groove either, but per track Groove sliders with the ability to move the zero and one or the two and three individually before or after where they should land instead of moving 0/1 and 2/3 together for a generic “swing” groove. It’s been hell finding a replacement for what ACID Pro can do with their custom groove tool and how easy it is to create complex unique realistic sounding grooves with it.
Basically I’d like to see per track Groove controls like the current Master Groove but that let you move any line early or late and lets you affect every line based on the LPB or perhaps based on some determined length, like being able to select how many lines long the groove is and have it loop when you get past that number of lines.
Also be great if we could automate groove controls.

Renoise crashes when starting a new song, or loading an existing one
Hello there
So, the problem I’m having: Renoise halts when starting a new song or attempting to load an existing one. This started happening after I created a template for BBC Symphony Orchestra, which I did because it’s the instruments I use the most. However, now I’m unable to load any songs I’ve saved in the past, or create a new song, even with no template. It just hangs at “Creating new song” until Windows throws up an error saying that it’s not responding.
Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks!

Load xrni into instrument slot
Hello, does anyone know of a function that takes a filepath to a .xrni and loads it into the nth instrument slot? Or have an idea as to how to approximate this? I have a ton of instruments in xrni form and would like to load them programmatically.
Thanks,
Halley

About audio of Renoise preference
16 bit signed, 16 bit unsigned here
32 bit signed int, 32 bit unsigned int
What’s the difference?
Also does it have a change in sound?

Phuturetone GR-8
Hi,
I’m new to VST’s and recently I discovered Phuturetone GR8 and made an awesome melody. I created the melody in the digital audio workstation Renoise. However I want the melody to go silent at a certain point in my track. Usely with samples I use the OFF command in the note column to silence the sample so I don’t hear it anymore (in the next pattern). However with Phuturetone GR8 as a VST this does not work: the sound slowly fades away. However I want an immediately stop / silence. How can I achieve this in (combination with Renoise).
Thanks in advance.

Volca Drum Single Mode Test
I had some time left so I tried to connect Volca Drum in single midi mode. The control is a bit different than in split mode, but overall it works. They can’t find such creations as in split mode.
I haven’t figured out how to control velocity. It should be 9n V = 0-127 where n is the midi channel but nothing yet I also can’t figure out why this test sometimes freeze for while. midi speed ?
thanks for ideas.

Script editor - cant type a ~
Hi,
I’m not able to type a ~ inside the scripting editor in renoise (on windows 10). Probably due to swedish keyboard layout? I can do it the hard way ( pressing alt and typing 0126 on the numpad ) so it’s not a major issue.
The normal way to type a tilde, for me, is alt.gr (or ctrl+alt) and the key south west of backspace, then pressing space. See picture below.

Renoise 3.3 on Macbook pro (mid 2012)
Hi, im interested in buying Renoise 3.3. but just wandering if it would work properly on my laptop, Macbook Pro 13-inch (mid 2012. Does anyone here have experience about this?
My specs are:
2,5 Ghz Intel Core i5
4 Gt 1600 Mhz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1536 Mt
500 Gt SSD (SATA)
Im interested in how well vst plugins (like Korg Legacy, UVI’s Digital synsations etc) would perform in it… i would use probably like 2-3 vst’s simultaneously.

Recording to patterns
Will this functionality ever be added? It’d be very helpful to be able to record to patterns instead of just into the regular tracker so I can record sequences at different LPB in a song.

Project wont load
I have a project that won’t load. I can’t get a crash log to see if it’s a plugin I’m using because renoise wont actually crash, it just loads forever. I was trying some new plugins, but made sure to remove them from the plugin folders and still having the same problem. Really hope this project isn’t doomed because there’s lots of work in there. Not giving up defeat yet though.
I hit CTRL save all the time, is there a way for me to go back to a previous save state from before the crash?
I, unfortunately, didn’t have autosave on and recording versions.
Any ideas? I have a feeling this one can be figured out.

Redux disable keyboard input only for note input?
Hi,
is there a way to disable keyboard input (which triggers notes) in Redux? Other shortcuts should work (copy/paste, delete etc…)
why?
When using Redux in DAW, most likely DAW has virtual keyboard (which accepts keyboard input for midi notes) and it overlaps with redux. Sometimes this is very annoying.
Thanks

Split a wav. to fit pattern length?
So I do love renoise but one issue is that if I have a for example song wav or mp3 I have to carefully split it up to make it " fit " to my patterns or, not be able to hear it during editing further down in the song. So my question is… is there an EASY way to split a wav file up based on the length of my patterns? So I can just put a new marker at the start of each pattern for the song to continue?
It would be a lot easier if it was just song but this one has some instruments in it as well.
Suggestions?

Baby Audio's Spaced Out reverb plugin doesn't seem to work properly with sample instruments
I was loving Baby Audio’s Spaced Out reverb plugin when I discovered a weird issue in renoise. It works as expected with plugin instruments but when used with sample instruments the reverb only lasts the duration of the sample instead of continuously decaying like it should with long reverb decay settings. Both my version of renoise and spaced out are both the latest versions on windows 10.
edit: seems to only be an issue in the vst2 version, vst3 is working as expected.

Clone pattern stopped working - The operation would create more then 1000 patterns
Hi,
When I clone a pattern I get a message box that tells me:
I don’t want thousand patterns, one would be enough
Can somebody tell me how to fix this? I can’t clone a pattern anymore.
