Midi Out Clock Groove

November 12, 2023 - 20:25

Hi,

so I’m syncing a 303 via Midi Clock and noticed that global groove also swings the midi clock.
I mean it’s a very cool feature but in this case I’d like the 303 to play without swing but I can’t figure out how.
Is it possible?
Thanks!

2.8/2.9 layout for 3.0+

November 8, 2023 - 18:15

Hi,

Maybe an obvious question if it’s already easily possible?

But I just love the work flow of the arrangement on renoise 2.8/2.9, I really don’t get on with the new layout much, I can use it fine and have done allot of work on it but when I switch back to 2 everything just feels so much easier to work with for me personally.

Is there a way I can put the layout of 3+ back 2.8 etc? I want to be able to use the updated effects and advantages of the new versions but with the older layout.

The original layout is just proper Renoise to me, it’s alien to change it so much, avid Renoise user from the start…

Thanks.

REQUEST: DSP Chain - Combine Into Doofer WITH Macros

November 7, 2023 - 00:03

The Combine into Doofer feature is awesome, but it could be even more awesome if it took macros into account. Doofer’s do not seem to inherit any existing macros from the DSP Chain. We just lose them when combined.

Please consider this in a future update. Also, if added, please make it so that if there are more than 4 existing macros setup, the Doofer would also add the same number of them, so they don’t get cropped down to 4 (default number of doofer macros)

Slow, thumping breakcore/gabba (re)composed in renoise

November 4, 2023 - 15:58

Hi Folks,

Been hard at work making this:

chc08rm.net Templates - [LOG_CRASHDUMP]

Templates, is a Felix Helix EP comprised of studio versions of tracks written for live performance, broadcasting the Felix Helix sound.

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

It started life as loops for an RS7000, played live and then I sequenced everything into a studio version using Renoise and mixed down in REAPER. Let me know what you think.

Especially keen on seeing what you all make of Template 3, my first deliberate attempt at breakcore.

If you like any of this stuff, I can shunt you the XRNS’s, just message/reply.

Enjoy!

The WIP thread - work In progress

November 3, 2023 - 17:25

I’ve seen a lot of WIPs in this forum, so why not put them into an own thread?
You’ve got a WIP? You’re unsure about your composition or your mix? Post it here and you’ll maybe get some more inspiration or a solution or just a nice conversation or whatever.

I’ve never ever posted a WIP anywhere, so this is a premiere. I’m kinda stuck composition-wise, at 1:37 I wanted to have a guitar “solo” or something similar that provides a new melody, but I couldn’t find a proper one yet and I have to have another muscial break to regain some more creativity I guess. There’s A LOT of workl to do. And of course the mix is not finished yet, I’m pretty sure you can hear that.

Here’s my WIP:

What do you think?

Vsti phrase - automation

November 2, 2023 - 14:10

Trying renoise again,

Did this:

  1. Added phaseplant as a vsti instrument
  2. Created some silly notes in a phrase
  3. Added notes in edit track to play the phrase (so far so good)
  4. Wanted to control a parameter in phaseplant (mod wheel in this instance) so i:
    a) added an instrument automation to the track
    b) did a curve in the automation graph for the value

Result: Nothing, i.e. the parameter does not reach the plugin.

If I instead use the the track and enter notes directly (instead of using a phrase), it does work.

I have looked for workarounds, but, the tips seems to be aimed at controlling sample instruments through the macro knobs.

Is it possible to modify plugin vsti parameters from the automation “lane” when the instrument is only playing a phrase in the track?

Renoise 3.4.3 | 64bit Raspberry Pi (Bookworm) | Window manager issue

November 2, 2023 - 14:00

Description:

Renoise 3.4.3 on Pi OS 64bit Bookworm (latest release, fully updated at time of writing) doesn’t appear in the native window manager and am unable to move the window containing Renoise around the screen. It is locked to the top bar.

You can full screen, minimise, and you can drag to increase size of the Renoise window, but you can’t unstick the window from the top of the screen and move it around, and Renoise doesn’t appear to be windowed in the native window style (you can see the expected native window style if you look at the Jack window in the screenshots below).

Renoise operates as normal otherwise. Small bit of speculation, the recent release of Pi OS has moved default window manager from X11 to Wayland.

Steps to reproduce look like this:

Launch Renoise That's it. …

Screenshots:

Initial window state

Drag corner to resize

Unable to use UVI Drum Designer

October 31, 2023 - 03:51

Brief description:

I cannot get Renoise to play a drum loop preset from UVI’s Drum Designer. (In Abelton, this was accomplished by putting a midi note with a long duration in the piano roll, often C-4.)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Assign UVI Workstation to the track. Select Drum Designer within UVI Workstation. Select a preset within Drum Designer.

  2. I record C-4 for the duration that the loop preset will play by holding it down and releasing it.

Expected results: I expect to hear a disco beat for the duration of the note

Actual results: Both during recording as well as during playback, I hear nothing.

Otherwise, I’m having a good time learning Renoise. Thanks.

Plugivery has completed the first set of Ports of Nomad Factory Plugins!

October 30, 2023 - 18:40

Not sure if anyone else here in the forums was or is a fan of the Nomad Factory plugins, but Plugivery (the company that took over the plug-ins after the original developer passed away) have finished porting the Pulse-Tec and All-Tec (PULTEC and ALTEC emus) EQs. They look and sound great!

Nomad Factory Retro EQs Bundle v2

The Retro EQs Bundle is a faithful emulation of the legendary Pultec & Altec passive analog equalizers range from the 50’s. The hardware has been heard on countless records and are still being used today. The Retro EQs Bundle v2 adds adjustable...

Looks like they’re on promo for like $40 USD as a bundle. I highly recommend them if you don’t already have some passive EQ emulations in your collection (or even if you do; I’m a plugin hoarder). If you have a valid license for a previous version of either, then this is actually a free update!

Just thought I’d share, as I have been following the ports since I bought into the Nomad Factory and Plug&Mix collections and am quite excited to see it moving along.

New tools for working with frequencies directly

October 30, 2023 - 09:59

Hello, I’m fairly new to coding and have made a few tools personal use which I’m looking to share with the community.

I like working with frequencies, for example building instruments where each note is a specific frequency not necessary related to the other notes in a traditional way, just whatever feels good to me… or setting BPM and device parameters derived from a frequency value.

I’ve made a frequency calculator that can perform various calculations on hz values and automatically set a chosen parameter in Renoise, like the interval between two frequencies in cents and can update chosen sample transpose / finetune values accordingly, or multiplying a frequency by a ratio like ‘4:3’ or decimal. Other calculations include hz to BPM, hz to LPC (for LFO), hz to milliseconds.

It also features a separate notepad style gui for storing results or anything else you wish, supports opening and saving .txt files.

For now I’d like to know if this tool would be useful to others and if there’s other utility they think it could provide? If so I can share the latest version in the forum for feedback before submitting the tool.

Later I will cover my instrument creator that builds instruments based on a list of frequencies, by generating single cycle waveforms of each frequency, setting appropriate looping and mapping options so it’s instantly playable across keyboard. User has many preferences including interval / harmonic option for layering frequencies, mapping to white keys only and inserting modulation sets. Additionally I have a separate scale creator to generate intervals from a base value which are easily transferred to the instrument creator.

Thank you!

SFZ Envelopes & LFOs

October 29, 2023 - 23:00

When dealing with SFZ files in Renoise, I’m disappointed that some data isn’t imported or exported, such as:

  • Envelopes (Amplitude, Pitch & Filter)
  • LFOs (Amplitude, Pitch & Filter)

I’m sure there’s more missing, but those are the main ones I really miss. Many soundfonts use single-cycle waveforms and rely on the envelopes and LFOs to give the sound its character.

Here’s a short list of features included in SFZ V1.0.
Here’s a huge list of the features that have been included in the the SFZ format over the years.

Renoise being (ingeniously) designed around sample-based instruments, there’s so much potential when working with soundfonts (VEL, PAN, FX columns/commands).

Rather than relying on a tool, it makes more sense for Renoise to provide better support for this file format natively, considering Renoise already added support for SFZ import/export in 3.1. Creating a tool at this point would largely be reinventing the wheel.

I’m curious if anyone else has missed these features and would be excited for SFZ support to be further developed!

Cacophony Is An Open-Source MIDI Sequencer By Subaltern Games

October 27, 2023 - 19:20

Interesting write-up and video about a simple tracker-like instrument designed for the QWERTY and piano keyboard (no mouse). I haven’t tested it yet but plan to, as it embodies a lot of the things I like about Renoise.

Bedroom Producers Blog – 27 Oct 23 Cacophony Is An Open-Source MIDI Sequencer By Subaltern Games

Subaltern Games has released an open-source MIDI sequencer called Cacophony, and it’s free if you want to compile the program for yourself. The developer wanted its strength to be its minimalist and ergonomic design, which is why the software looks...
