New Tool (3.4) genpad

February 27, 2024 - 04:49
genpad

A future collection of helper popups that you can use to generate stuff. Currently only one pad is available. The idea here is to have some handy popups that can be controlled with a few keys (mostly just the arrows) to offer a sort of gamepad like control-scheme (although the tool doesn’t respond to actual gamepad inputs out-of-the-box).

Provides key-bindings in Pattern Editor / Tools and in Phrase Editor / Tools

  • genpad - euclidean

Similar entries can be found in the context menu of the pattern and the phrase editor.

euclidean

Generate euclidean rhythms from a set of notes in a pattern or a phrase.

usage
  • Have some notes in a pattern or a phrase
  • Launch the euclidean genpad.
  • Select parameters using the Up and Down arrow
  • Adjust them by pressing Left or Right (hold Ctrl/Command for bigger steps)
  • The pattern will be continuously changed while you are adjusting
  • Press Enter or bounce around when you are happy

You can start from a single note or multiple notes, you can even use chords or a mix of single notes and chords. These notes will be collected when you launch the genpad and will be used as a note-pool to fill your pulses. If there are less notes in the pool than pulses you picked, they will be repeated over and over.

You can select a range inside the pattern to only generate the rhythm there, if you haven’t selected anything or only selected a single line, the rhythm will be generated over the entire pattern.

parameters rhythm
  • pulses - the number of pulses to distribute over the selected steps
  • steps - how many steps to distribute the pulses over
  • rotate - rotate the generated pulse-rhythm across the steps
  • offset - rotate the resulting rhythm by a line offset in the pattern
notes
  • cycle - cycle the pattern of notes you have (if you only selected a single note or the same one multiple times, this parameter will have no effect on the output)
  • repeats - number of times to use each note from your note-pool, for example if you have notes C, E, B and set repeats to 2 the pattern will contain notes as C, C, E, E, B, B
swing
  • swing - the amount of swing to apply to pulses that fall into the swing-window
  • size - how many lines to repeat the swing pattern over, by default this should match your LPB
  • window - where to start applying the swing inside the size, for example if you have 4 lines-per-beat with a swing size of 4, a window of 2 will mean the swing amount will be applied to lines 3 and 4 in each beat
  • shift - shift the swing-window around to swing different parts of the beat
delay
  • delay - apply a uniform delay to every generated note
  • snap - by default the generated notes will be quantized to lines, if you want actual equal distribution of pulses you can switch this to none and have wonky rhythms

You can reset each parameter to the default value using Backspace.

Retrigger Velocity

February 25, 2024 - 20:43

Retrigger Velocity

I noticed something interesting about the velocity of retriggered notes - Rxy - when the x value is something other than 0 or 8. They transmit different versions depending on whether there’s an accompanying note or not.

PC Latency problem

February 25, 2024 - 08:36

So I really don’t know how to deal with it anymore.
After the total necessary reinstallation of Win, I am not able to render sound without having some sound artifacts. This is not only about Renoise, but in general, even when listening. I tried different drivers but still nothing. I tried the recommended things, turned off the services but still nothing
Any idea ?

Mystery Palace of Sauntersaus

February 24, 2024 - 03:21

"The Mystery Palace is the home of the antihegemon, flipping the pyramid scheme on its head. The polar inversion of hierarchy, play the Mystery Ticket and take the ride to new realities made manifest.

The Mystery Palace is the refuge of the antihierarch, embodiment of the movement from BELOW to ABOVE, the urging of uplift of all people from the cruel downpression pulling mankind to demise. Flip the pyramid on its head and make a polar inversion of hierarchy.
The polar inversion of all hierarchy, mr. rich come down! Your high horse is hereby overturned.

“Now I am at last relentless,
I declare that the social order is to be superseded by another social order.
I know the quality of your folly when you go about the streets looking in the dust of noisy oratory for the complete state.
I know very well that when the complete state appears it will be because you bring it to others, not because others bring it to you.
And I know that you will bring it, not as a burden upon your back, but as something unscrolled within.”

Hope you enjoy this new album!

New Tool: Interpolate Between Patterns

February 24, 2024 - 03:01

Hello, I have made another tool, similar structure to the last one. A new hotkey that interpolates between two step modulation points, the current step and the next to occur, across patterns. I often set modulation to occur across several patterns and I hate using graphical automation. Now I can define my start and end values and tie between them.

As is with the last one, please point out where I went wrong and I will fix it.

Since freetype supports subpixel rendering of fonts, maybe this can be exposed in Renoise? Or does it look less slick/oldschool/homogenous?

I was never been a music lover

February 23, 2024 - 07:14

I have never been a music lover since my childhood, and that can be so weird for so many as well. I am 20 right now, I went on my trip to London last month. I saw a group of blind people singing and using ancient musical instruments so beautifully in the street. I looked at them for about 4 to 5 hours, sitting there and enjoying my coffee. And then I realized that music is an art. I’m rehearsing myself, and to be precise, I am all about old 90s music. Last month I got myself an old kind of turntable from Angels Horn Coupons and love it. I am looking for an old classic harmonium. Does anyone has any idea where I can get that at a discounted price?

How to render each track thru master into a separate file?

February 22, 2024 - 15:25

Hey crew!

I like to render my tunes into wav tracks after I’ve finished them. I often have a gainer, eq or some other plugins on the master track so I want my tracks to be bounced thru master. I’ve done it by soloing each track and rendered the song track by track to get each track’s signal thru master track. But is there an easier way to do this? I mean, can I somehow choose individual track signals to go thru master track while rendering all the tracks into separate files at once?

Total Headless operation possible?

February 21, 2024 - 19:45

First, thanks for keeping the 90’s alive for me with Renoise! Computers stopped being fun after my A500 days, but Renoise helps a lot.

Ok, this is probably an odd question, and I have been all over the manual and other forum posts.
What I am trying to do is run Renoise completely headless on a dedicated PC placed inside some custom hardware (already built).

I need Renoise to do only the following…

  • Load up to 256 samples into PC RAM. Samples up to 16 seconds in length, most much shorter.
  • Trigger up to 8 (prefer 16) of those samples via midi or the OSC option. Low lag needed.

So really, I just need it to replace the 16 channel sample player I built using a lot of hardware a few years back. 16 dedicated 12 bit dacs, each on its own custom phase accumulator circuit. Much like a Fairlight.

The PC (good spec) will be running windoze and have everything stripped to the minimum for max performance. The PC will boot, launch Renoise and then listen on the USB port for external commands from my custom hardware through a driver I have already written.

Since I wrote the hardware interface, I can have it control Renoise via midi or OSC (whatever seems most logical). I even considered using a mouse and keyboard control hack if needed. Since the PC will do nothing else, I have total control to make this work.

So, what do you think? Can Renoise be made into a headless sample player?
My other option is to spend 2 years learning how to write a dedicated WASAPI player, but I am not really wanting to spend that much time.

Cheers!

Convolver Color - what EQ is applied?

February 19, 2024 - 16:28

On certain IRs the color slider sounds fantastic, and I wish I could print that setting to the impulse response so I could use it elsewhere - do we know exactly what the colour slider does so I could replicate it?

Thanks!

New tool: Parameter Lock

February 18, 2024 - 17:13

I really liked working on the digitakt and digitone when I had them. I would abuse Plocks, I found them to be an easy way to modulate without ruining my original sound, which is the problem I often run into when trying to automate parameters in DAWs.

I have crafted a crude tool to simulate this functionality. You will find two hotkeys, one for “short” and one for “long” parameter locks. It works like this:

  1. type in your effect column parameter automation the parameter you want to “lock”
  2. activate the hotkey
  3. the “short” hotkey will place the original (read: currently set) values before and after your plock. This means that your sound is only changed for that step. The “long” version of the hotkey moves the “after” original value to the next note. This means your sound is changed for the entire note.

It’s important to consider that renoise actively adjusts the parameters based on their last played automation, so it’s important to be diligent when using this that the parameter you want to lock is set to the settings you like it at. I would advise you use this while renoise is paused. Other than that, it is pretty straightforward.

I’m not a programmer so I expect this to break under lots of use cases, but hopefully not. I don’t have a ton of time to test it right now and it seems to be working so I thought I would share it. Please feel free to let me know if it doesn’t work and I will have a go at fixing it.

Different Fonts for Patterncolums?

February 18, 2024 - 14:53

Hello, i am currently working on a Renoise color theme based on Fasttracker II’s “Blues” color theme.
I also recreated the “Future”-Font from ft2 as a TrueTypeFont and i am in the process to do so with the other bitmap fonts.

Is there by chance any way to change the fonts in the patterneditor individually,
so that delay/pan/volume or effects would be given a separate font as it used to be in ft2?
Or is this just one fixed font for all of the patterneditor?

Since there are XML tags in Config.xml for different fontstyles throughout the UI, i was wondering, if there might be a way to style the individual columns via PatternConfig.xml that might not be documented, since now it’s only used to define different fontsizes for the patterneditor to be selected from the configurationdialog.

Here is a screenshot of my work in progress:

And a Screenshot of Ft2 Clone for comparison:

Greetings and happy tracking
