OSX issues with 3.2
@dspasic wrote:
Hi guys, wanted to thank you for your effort and involvement but i’m considering to go to 3.1 for a while. as i’m having few issues:
- Loading projects from 3.1 doesn’t remember (FX plugins) nor instrument remember presets (VSTi) when opening in 3.2
- Sometimes it hangs, when opening projects (freezing, being unresponsive) after i wait a while, i just kill process, and i open renoise and it works great.
- Loading simple projects without plugins sometimes take a while, idk why
I’m interested in optimizing pc for it and i’m asking you guys to sum up some performance-related setup within renoise/os.
Thanks in advance!!

One of my VST's GUI is showing up blank in Renoise 3.2

The new Renoise 3.2 looks great! However, do you have any idea why after I loaded one of my previous version projects and opened one of the VSTs there is a black screen only (plugin is still working but without showing the control panel) ??

Renoise hangs when loading heavy things
@Tumulte wrote:
When I try to load a heavy VST, or track or whatever… renoise will “hang” and whenever I click, Windows 10 will prompt me to “Wait” or “close the program”.
After a normal loading time, it will work fine…
The problem here being that Windows thinks renoise’s stuck, while it’s actually just loading stuffs. Probably some kind of miscommunication between the software and the OS.
Users might think Renoise is broken when it’s not

Wet knob for parallel processing
@SlambertAnders wrote:
I could really use a wet knob, either on the doofers, or on all plugins inclussive third party. They have done this in Reaper and it’s really usefull. But I need it in renoise too as it’s my favorite DAW

A more ideal way of randomizing phase offset
@beatsgo wrote:
I’m a big fan doing automated things. One thing that’s been bugging me for the past years is how to do randomize phase offsets. With my research and scientific approach to this problem I figured out two methods that can work:
- Randomize phrases
- Randomize samples
(1) was discussed in a different topic but I have a different approach for the doofer which makes it more efficient and lowers CPU usage.
So that being said let’s hop into it:
(1) Randomize phrases
The approach as mentioned is similar as mentioned above. You have one/set of sample(s) that you want to execute at the same time per key press. What you do is recreate multiple phrases where each input shows as follows:
C-4 | S00
The next phrase the input will show as:
C-4 | S02
So why the jump to S02? You’re only allow to have up to 126 phrases.
In order to randomize the phrases within an instrument you’ll have to create a doofer that contains a key tracker that triggers the reset of an LFO. This LFO is using the “random” waveform. Previously I set the LFO to run at 1LPB but this is just absurd. It’s better to set the LPC to Infinity. From there the LFO attaches to a hydra dsp which is used to define specific phrase range on the instrument macro DSP.
The result shows as follow:
Of course why would I make you go through the effort of creating this when I can just give you the RANDOM OFFSET.xrni (7.4 KB) file?
(2) Randomize Samples
This IMO is more interesting to me and provides a new perspective on how Renoise instruments works. Let say you have a predefine set of samples that are the same tune waveform…but phased differently and want to use them in one instrument. What you can do is overlap all the audio samples and change this specific settings:
You officially have an RANDOM_SAMPLES.xrni (28.1 KB) instrument that can do random offsets.
…
Did I mention you can combine these two concepts and create even some crazier shit?

LPB line highlighting in phrases not redrawing completely
@4tey wrote:
Not a big issue, I don’t think the LPB line highlighting within the phrase pattern is refreshing enough in 3.2.
Should be relatively simple to see. Load in attached xrns. Contains 4 phrases in instrument 0. Each phrase has a different LPB setting. Just click around the phrase selector to change phrases and look at the line highlighting. Forcing a full refresh corrects the problem (i.e. min/max the Renoise window, switch away and then back again to Renoise, or switch to the pattern editor and back etc.)
phrases.xrns (3.9 KB)
Above showing a 4 lpb phrase from a 7 lpb phrase.
I think Redux 1.1 also suffers from a similar redrawing problem.

Modulation envelopes not activating 3.2
@Snares wrote:
Hey so if I make a panning or volume envelope on a sample in the modulation section, it works fine in there but as soon as I go into the edit screen and sequence the sound, it ignores what I’ve done. Is this a bug or is there some new way to engage what you’ve done as far as modulation?

Pulseaudio/jack/alsa and Renoise
@zklaus wrote:
Looking over some of the threads I see it’s an issue for some but I couldn’t find a solid solution for it…maybe I overlooked it, idk…this is a similar to an issue I had on Windows with the ASIO driver. It locks up the sound card…My solution on Windows was just abandon ASIO and use Direct Sound. I’m a hobbyist so for my purposes it worked fine and I never missed ASIO.
But how do I do this on Linux? I need to be able to listen to other audio apps w/o closing Renoise.

Zoom R8 fader Midi mapping
@pastulla wrote:
Hello everyone,
my name is Nicola, I am new to renoise and also new to Midi mapping.
I am trying to use a zoom R8 controller as a midi input device. I read the article about midi mapping and tried to follow the instructions.
It was quite easy to map the buttons on the R8, but it seems impossible to map any faders. Whenever I try to assign a fader nothing happens: I click on the value to be mapped, move the corresponding fader on the R8, nada.
If I switch to the midi in/output view in renoise, I can see the pitch bending signals send by the faders on the R8, so the device must be connected correctly to renoise.
Can anyone please explain to me how to map the faders? Do I have to change the fader signals to something else?
Many thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Nicola

Note off doesn't seem to work?
@Evda wrote:
Hi.
Im in the process of learning how to use Renoise, and im having trouble with note-off commands not working when using a VST, and i can’t seem to figure out why that is right now.
All columns have a note off command at the end of the pattern, but they keep on playing in the next pattern anyway. When i open a new song and put in a note of the same VST, and a note off command, it does work, so there must be something going on im not seeing.
I took a picture with my phone, because i also don’t know how to take screenshot in renoise yet.
Anyone got any idea’s? Maybe it has something to do with the effect commands in the last column? (I haven’t figured out what these are yet, but they appear when i use the pedal while recording with my digital piano)

How to polyrhythm
@Tumulte wrote:
polyrythm.xrns (42.5 KB)
Hi,
on another topic, some people asked about how to achieve polyrhythm (like TRUE polyrhythm, not polymeters). Which means having any type of tuplets over a straight 4/4
Which means that when a straight plays 4 quarter notes, you can have 3, 5, 7, 11 23 or any number of beats evenly distributed during the same bar
It gives a weird feeling of being on time and completely off.
It’s very easily done in renoise by creating a phrase and setting the LPB (line per beat) parameter to the desired subdivision. Be careful : the LPB is located right above the modwheel/pitchwheel of the virtual keyboard, NOT TO BE CONFUSED with “step length” on the lower left corner.
On my example:
Track 1 plays a straight 4/4 (to contrast with the polyrhythm)
Track 2 has 5 phrases :
1 : 3/4 (3:4 over 4:4 is extremely common in pop music, can be achieved with any DAW),
2 : 5:4,
3 : 7:4
4: 11:4
5: 21:4 (yeah, that means that when a standard bar plays 4 quarter notes… this one plays 21 even notes)
Of course, this works exactly the same in redux
Have fun

Snappy Adjustment for Drums for samples within Renoise
@Logical_Impulse wrote:
It is my understanding that the “snappy” adjustment on drum machines represents the adjustments present on an actual snare drum. I see this adjustment on all drum machines. I am in the process of building some drum machine instruments within Renoise and am wondering if anybody has any ideas as how to recreate this within Renoise. or is snappy even a feture that needt to be included. I am looking forward to see other’s thoughts on this. Has anybody else created drum machine style instruments? If so what are your must includes.
Many Thanks to all Renoisers!
