ReWire no longer showing up

Renoise Forum - May 8, 2020 - 11:05

Previously when I had Reaper running and I booted Renoise, Renoise would ask to become a ReWire Slave.

I said ‘no’ a couple of times cause I didn’t need at the time. But now I do need it is no longer shows up.

Renoise does not show up in Reaper’s ReWire list.

Did I offend it?

I’ve tried rebooting, reinstalling. Basically everything from this thread. I’m running the latest versions of Renoise and Reaper.

Any suggestions how to get it working again?

My specs:
Reaper v6.09 (x64)
Renoise v3.2.1 (x64)
Win7 sp2 64bit

Pop arrangement

Renoise Forum - May 8, 2020 - 07:20

Hi,

I am still here and still using renoise. Even if I am not on the forums a lot… I am sorry. Maybe I can participate more again. Here is my latest pop arrangement; no soundcloud because I’m working on a project with somebody, and I don’t want this flying all over the web. You can dl the mp3 from the link below

All renoise. A couple of VST synths.

LFO or Stepper to Phrase LBP

Renoise Forum - May 7, 2020 - 16:48

I was looking into this on the forum, and hadn’t found any possibilities (yet).

I had created a pattern and am able to set each note in a chord with its own 0YXX value. Sweet! Now I get random chord structure within my pattern.

Then I wanted to see if I could change the speed at which these chords are struck by affecting the LPB in the Phrases area, separate from the tempo of the rest of the song. This would be a GREAT feature in the Phrases section. That would create all sorts of melodic and rhythmic polyrhythms and/or allow notes to be ‘off tempo’ if desired. Another fancy feature to create even more generative music!

To reinforce my point. Not in the actual song area, but in the Phrases area.

If one was really dreaming big, the Timestretch function that was just added could be modulated by an LFO or Stepper to stretch audio loops. Would be fun! Probably CPU intensive.

Why do People go to Linux?

Renoise Forum - May 7, 2020 - 08:07

I have used Windows since 1995. I had an Apple Mac in 1997 but I have never used one since. I have been tinkering with Linux and dual booting it/virtual boxes since 2010. The first Linux that I installed for real on metal was Opensuse in 2011.

In October 2019 I left Windows for good and went totally Linux. I went to Ubuntu Studio and am still in it, soon to go to 20.04. This left a lot of expensive software useless because it does not run on Linux and I hate WINE. THat software has cost me money. But I still went all Linux. Why?

Because for all the sunk cost I was gaining two things: time and sanity. Windows used to be fun. When there was the XP search dog wagging his tail and you had nifty power toys. But now it is all pain; Windows 10 is the most atrocious excuse for an OS that I have ever seen. Apple Clarisworks in the 90’s was better. Every day in Windows 10 is a fight. Microsoft want one thing. They want you to log in with a hotmail account. Use Cortana! Your fifth and final chance to put off the update until it happens whether you like it or not; that sounds like a demand from The Godfather.

Then you fight back! You go to Britec’s videos [or someone else’s] on Youtube and you tweak away at the registry and become a skilled registry hacker. Or you grab some third party tool from goodness knows where to do it, like a guy in an alleyway whispering “I’m gonna keep you safe kid”. The game of ping pong begins! Microsoft to serve! It’s a Cortana volley! User defends into the open court! What a winner by Microsoft! They put Cortana where registry keys were greyed out! Next point…

Surely that is the definition of computer user insanity. To be fighting your OS every day to get what you want and need! How much time do people like Britec sink into all that tweaking! That is time that I save in Linux! It was a very, very hard decision. I looked exhaustively in all of 2019 at all options. I looked at any way that I could of still using Windows for my programs. I looked at React OS. I looked at Windows 10 Enterprise. But as a peasant who doesn’t use Volume Licenses I am not worthy of Enterprise 10! In this lifetime I must burn more Karma to be worthy!

Now, I am happy. I know that I made the right choice. I could have put off the inevitable and used my copy of Windows 8.1 . But what was the point? 2023 will soon come around. I have to go to Linux anyway. I cannot see any future for Microsoft in the consumer space. They are headed towards becoming another IBM, Even their Xbox they are trying to wreck by doing stupid things with the card slots. Nadella is a complete idiot. That clown could not run a girlie bar in an army base. Absolutely nothing excites me about their garbage anymore. I got to the stage where Windows was so depressing that I didn’t want to look at my computer.

I still have a renoise license. I had to uninstall it for various reasons. Nothing to do with Renoise itself. Might put it back on after I upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04. I am gone for good. The Microsoft universe is dead to me. I never want to ever see a Windows desktop or program ever again. Apple is dead as well. Pity. They make some nice computers. But their walled garden is a joke. Their quality of engineering has gone downhill; see the Louis Rossman channel on YouTube.

It was a big decision. Because I zonk myself out of many careers. You have to know Windows to work in computer security for instance. But I had to do it. Or just spend hours of wasted time on Windows nonsense.

Crackling at ~50% DSP load, but no xruns (with RT PREEMPT kernel) Part II

Renoise Forum - May 6, 2020 - 21:20

I was not aware that the topic really gets closed, so I just open another one

Old thread: Crackling at ~50% DSP load, but no xruns

Finally I found out that the crackling in Renoise (without showing any xruns) apprears only with the RT PREEMPT kernel.

When I play the project (which is a 16 line long loop) with the RT PREEMPT kernel booted I get constant crackling without any xruns.

When I use the stock Debian kernel I get xruns only during the first loop and then they disappear. So the DSP load is higher at the beginning and then goes down again.

Are usually unsing RT kernel when using Renoise in Linux? Officially it is recommended, but in my case it makes more problems.

Suggest a samplepack

Renoise Forum - May 6, 2020 - 15:49

I prefer working with samples, but I also like having a library of sounds.
I have been really happy with the Nostalgia pack, that I got from zero-g years ago. Still gets a lot of use.
I also have the digital sound factory soundfonts that I converted to sfz.

I am wondering if you have any “go-to” sample packs?

Cheers

Hopeless and Pointless

Renoise Forum - May 6, 2020 - 11:25

About five years ago, in late 2015, I knew nothing about music. I didn’t know what a note was. From then to now, with no support and self taught from books, I have worked myself to the ground to try to enjoy[?] making music.

But for all my efforts it’s been pointless; none of my music goes anywhere. It is unseen by anyone and unused by anybody. I say this with the most modest aims: I just want some of it to DO something. Anything. Other than vanish into the ether of nothingness.

I make music that nobody wants. I cannot sing. From the one composing competition that I entered awhile ago academics don’t get what I am trying to do. &*^ them. I have tried to learn how to make electronic music in FL Studio. But all my sincere attempts, including some paid sites like ADSR, got nowhere and I am no closer to understanding clipping than I am to being an astronaut.

I am good at one thing only: making music scores. I used to make them in Finale in Windows Seven. Now in Ubuntu Studio Linux I use Muse score. I have taught myself a lot of proper musical theory. I have my own ideas: the ideas that &*& academics hate. Over five years I have finished every score that I started. Today I made part of a score with a piano and xylophone using A Minor. I won’t explain my theory ideas beyond that. It would bore people. But every note that I make is like a voice shouting “this is pointless”.

Now I have got to the stage where I can compose easily and pretty quickly. Far quicker and better than I could ever compose in the piano roll of a DAW. I have been posting my scores on the Musescore site. My handle there is Pianogates. I release everything there under Creative Commons Attribution; you can do anything with them as long as you acknowledge e.g Pianogates. But I don’t expect anyone to do anything with them. They will be more dust wisps lost in the air. It would be great if someone did even if it was putting them in a DAW.

The Free Music Archive was a cynical outfit that didn’t want my free music. Then they sold their site to a Spam company.
Pro Collabs didn’t want to collab even though I worked myself stupid to try to.
Bandcamp, Soundcloud etc I just hate.

A lot of the time when I made electronic music I burnt myself out and my music lost creativity.

Meanwhile my finite life span ticks away. The only thing that stops me from giving up music is that I don’t have any other creative outlet. That and my numerous other failures to find an outlet. I don’t sing. I don’t play any instrument. As for painting or drawing, I don’t think that any normal method could ride that learning curve. My other interest is Linux and I don’t know what creativity is in that. If I did stop making scores I might grab some books on computer programming.

In all this nobody has ever played any of my piano scores. That raises the vicious circle that if I knew that someone was going to play them I would make them more playable. There is no point seeking a music teacher. I have tried that; if you are over 18 they don’t want to know you. They only care about the kids;’ market. So if I gave up now nobody would have ever played a single score that I worked my guts out to make.

Hopeless. Pointless.

Beginner questions (Mac issue, keyboard issue, and selecting multiple)

Renoise Forum - May 5, 2020 - 18:44

Hi. Very early days user here, been using it for about a day, and watching the video tutorials, which are great! Very cool program!

  1. I’m on Mac OS X 10.14 (Catalina) and the Print button for keyboard shortcuts opens Safari on a blank page. I suspect it’s not seeing or using the XSLT stylesheet. Not entirely sure what to do about it, maybe someone could post the default one?

  2. Is a discontinuous selection possible? I like that you can set the offset or skip to 4 (say) to get quarter notes, but is it possible to select every 4th row or every 2nd row or whatever, and do the same operation on them?

  3. I’m a Dvorak keyboard user—is that going to be an issue? I noticed that I had to press Cmd+’ for me rather than Cmd+Q to quit the app, because ’ in Dvorak is Q on Qwerty.

Thanks for your help!

Mininova doesn't give any sound in Renoise

Renoise Forum - May 5, 2020 - 14:24

I cannot get any sounds out of my Mininova. I have all the drivers installed. When I put a headphone directly in the Mininova, I can hear everything, but when I use USB on my laptop as USB/MIDI output, while having the Mininova selected as input device, I hear nothing. Even when I select the VST Mininova, it gives me the message: “This plugin does not output audio”.

I also tried a MIDI cable output towards my audio interface (Tascam US-16x8) and two rear panel jack sockets (output left & right) to the input of it, but still no sound.

Can anyone help me out please?

Focusrite latency compensation problem on recording

Renoise Forum - May 5, 2020 - 13:36

With latest drivers update (4.63.24.564) the input latency (11.6 ms for 512 buffer for ex.) compensation is not applied anymore in Renoise when recording samples. With previous drivers everything is fine.
Anyone experiencing that?

Manipulator and Renoise 3.2

Renoise Forum - May 5, 2020 - 02:39

Hello there good people.
I was wondering if anyone could give me an educated guess, wether this plugin could be setup to work within Renoise?

Polyverse Music Manipulator - Polyverse Music

Extreme vocal transformer Now for only149$ 1279

The manual states several other hosts, to-do on how to bind a midi channel to the audio input.
For renoise I guess that is either Line IN, or a sample being played back on the channel with this plugin on.

However, I am not sure I understand how to route the midi channel into the Manipulator to get the polyfonicøs going, playing choords and hear it transplant to the vocal channel.

Does anyone have any knowledge wether this is possible in renoise or not?

Thanks in advance!

New Tool: RubberBand-Aid

Renoise Forum - May 4, 2020 - 20:51

Hello all,

After grappling with the legacy Rubberband tool (which worked great for whole samples), I wanted to have access to some of the experimental options in Rubber Band, in addition to the ability to work on sample selections. I came up with this:
https://www.renoise.com/tools/rubberband-aid-timeshift-pitch-correction-and-multisample-builder

It works great for my own needs, and I wanted to let it out into the community. Please give it a try and let me know if anything horribly breaks. Lua’s not my first language, but I’ve tried to make the tool as robust and flexible as possible.

Have fun and make adventurous music!
