Notes in Renoise different than original (Depeche Mode - Stripped)
Hello everyone, this is my first post here
I have a question (probably a noob one, so sorry for that). I’ve downloaded Renoise few days ago and I’m just trying it out; I’ve chosen that tool because I grew up with trackers like ProTracker and FastTracker. Since I’m a Depeche Mode fan, I’m currently playing with some DM samples and I wanted to recreate their song “Stripped”.
So here is my question… as you can see in the video (if you don’t already know the song) the lead synth is starting at 1:25 -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XVBiRqvTCE … and the notes are following (as in the video):
C-4, D-4, G-4, G#4, B-4, E-4, B-4, E-4
… but B-4 and E-4 at the end sound totally wrong; This sounds far more correct:
C-4, D-4, G-4, G#4, A#4, D#4, A#4, D#4
First I thought there’s something wrong with the sample, but when I take one of the Renoise piano instruments, the result is the same. How this could be? And again, sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m a beginner.
Thanks you!

New Tool (3.2): The Deliverer
Effortless Deliverables
The Deliverer is a batch rendering and archival tool for collecting mixdowns, stems, Renoise instruments, and raw samples, with customizable destination folders, export formats, and flexible naming for stems and mixdowns.
Other render tools didn’t fit my workflow, so I created The Deliverer to fill those voids. It can batch render any combination of Master mixdown, individual track stems, and grouped track stems (submixes), with customizable filenames and destination folders for each.
I built it to just work, with reasonable defaults for most use cases. It doesn’t render selections, it doesn’t export patterns separately, it just renders the song and all its stems—it’s my replacement for Renoise’s default Render To Disk dialog.
It’s also capable of exporting all XRNI instruments, and even raw samples, with each output sample filename encoded with information to make rebuilding an instrument easier (in a far future, dystopian post-Renoise world).
I also added preset management to be able to recall per-client, per-use case, or per-project settings easily.

Progress indicators (current task and batch progress):
- Render mixdown with custom settings
- Render stems with basic naming convention
- Specify custom folder for stem output (default: “Stems/”)
- Specify custom folder for exported instruments (default: “XRNI/”)
- Specify custom folder for exported raw samples (default: “Samples/”)
- Export sliced samples separately
- Setting: Flac or Wav for exported samples
- Add support for custom naming scheme
- Add preset management
- Make sure selected base paths exist, create if not
- Automatically create a containing folder based on song name
- Fixed: If song is unsaved (new song), automagic file naming breaks
- Decouple factory presets from user presets for saving/loading separate XML files, to avoid missing out when updates to factory settings are pushed
- Untested on Windows (confidence: 80%)
- Untested on Linux (confidence: 100%)

Please give it a go and let me know if you run into any problems. Stay safe out there—and make adventurous music.

New Tool: Session Time Tracker
Hello again,
After having a burning desire to track how much time I actually spent on each of my songs, and reading a few requests for such a thing in the forum, I put a time tracker tool together.
It’s a totally automatic time tracker for monitoring time spent on each song. If you have the tool installed, it will just work in the background, without altering your workflow in any way. If you choose to open the tool’s dialog, you’ll see the tool window below update in realtime based on your usage.
Saving the file will save the tracking information for the time you spent. If you open a file, fiddle a bit, and close it without saving, no tracking data will be altered.
The tool classifies time spent based on activity, for insight into which tasks take the most time.
To do this, the tool will create 2 files alongside each of your opened XRNS song files:
- songname.xrns - Your Renoise song file
- songname.tracked_time.xml - XML file containing the tracking data collected for the song. Saving the song will also save the time tracking data into this file.
- songname.tracked_time.report.txt - A text file containing a human-readable report of how much time was spent on the song. Updates automatically whenever you save the song.
Renoise tool window:
Text report:
- Automatically works in the background, unobtrusively keeping time records
- Classifies time spent based on activity.
- Automatically carries over old time tracking data when “Save Song As…”
- Stops counting automatically when Renoise loses focus
- Correctly handles computer suspend / lid closed by restarting time on resume
- Writes out textual report on song save
- When renaming a song, you must rename the time tracking data file as well to ensure time tracking continues as expected
- Can only determine usage and time spent from the moment the tool is installed and data collection begins.
Download here:
com.dlt.SessionTimeTracker.v1.0.xrnx (5.2 KB)
I’m also finishing up another workflow tool that I’ll probably release in a couple of days, so keep an eye out.
Enjoy, and let me know how it goes!

I can't select any VSTi anymore
Hello. I’m trying to select a VSTi instrument to use in a song, but the “instrument” box in the Plugin tab is frozen to “No Plugin Loaded” and nothing happens when I click it.
My plugin folder is correctly set up in Preferences. As a proof of this: when I open an old song I made that uses a VSTi (Dexed), Dexed appears in Renoise and works fine. But if I try to change it to another instrument (still within that old song)… Nope. The instrument box is still frozen - this time frozen to “VST: Dexed”, and I can’t select any other VSTi instrument.
Do you know what might be happening ?

Pattern matrix background color
I think adding background colors to the columns in the pattern matrix would assists finding the track you are looking for a bit easier, especially when many columns are still empty and I know I’m looking for a “blue” track (bass). My song template is at 54 tracks so it require a bit of overview.

Q: Triggering random phase at pattern start
Hello,
I’ve been playing with the settings for playing random phase instruments at the beginning of the pattern for a while. I’m trying a key-tracker with hydra, LFO and others but no progress. changes are also triggered in phase, which is logical when using a key-tracker. I play with keyzones and overlapping zones, but I still can’t do what I need. is there any simple procedure? what about Y00?
Thanks.

MBCR #12.1
TOPIC SKETCH
###:::Rules:::###
* No rules! * General rules: * Remix one or more songs from MBC#12 = to get voted in the best of the remixes * Track owners from MBC#12 must give their consent to remix their tune * answer in this thread if you will share your track from MBC#12 for everybody to Remix * Dont remix without permission!!! * A bunch of more rules. * Everybody from the forums can vote or participate as a late contestant; if you still make a tune for #MBC12 people can make remix of your tune. * You can make as many remixes as you wish but you can vote only for top three * If the artist shares an XRNS of the remix, their total votes are multiplied x 3 * Participants must post their track as a link in this thread. * Compo starts 1st of August 2020 and ends 1st of September, when after the voting starts * The top track is randomly selected among the 8 most voted remixes, during somekind of realtime online live stream radio broadcast * You can remix either the xrns project file or remix chop hack slice n slash the final rendered audio file* --- for example some tunes have lots of plugins/VSTs or U are on a different operating system than the song was written on, so it could be easier to just remix the wav/mp3 file::: Extra points :::

Daed - Irregular Expressionism
Hi friends!
I have released a new EP: ‘Irregular Expressionism’ on Defunkt Records!
It was made entirely in Renoise, so I figured it was relevant. I hope you all enjoy

What is the difference between "Master Track" volume level and Master level in "Mix"?
In the picture, the channel on the far right is the Master channel in the “Mix” section, while the one below is the “Master Track” DSP panel.
The question is: What is the difference between the volume sliders in these two? Even though I get it down to -6.500 dB in one of the sliders, the peak is above -6.500 dB (as seen in the picture).
Why is it like this? Why do I have to bring both the track AND the mixer volume to -6.500 dB in order to have the peak below or around -6.500 dB?

What's your setup to record midi events?
Hi,
I don’t know if this message is suited for this category… Feel free to displace it (or I’ll do it if needed).
I’m looking for a pleasant way to record midi in real-time in renoise, because sometimes I like to play things as I imagine them instead of analyzing and passing them step by step (this is what midi recording is made for I presume)…
Given I’m terrible at piano (I’m working on that, but the progress is kind of slow), it can take me dozens of retries to get the thing up to my expectations, and I have issues with renoise’s way to handle midi recording.
Indeed, as I do when I record instruments in samples, I’d like to have a way to set a loop through my patterns and retry my recording as long as I don’t get it the way I want it, but with renoise, if you set this loop and begin to play, when you get back at the start of the loop, what you previously played also start to replay (as expected I should say), and there’s no way to retry but stop everything, delete, and retry…
Is there any trick to handle that type of recording ? I thought that recording to phrases that pops for each loop could record every attempt into separate phrases and I would be able to cherry pick every things I find useful, would that be possible with a external tool ? (even if it’s not already existing, I could try a little lua script for this POC)
By the way, are you happy with renoise midi recording, and if not, how do you handle it ? Do you use external tools a little more handy ?
Regards,
Christophe.

Silly question about 3.2.1
I’m new to 3.2.1 and enjoying it thoroughly thus far, but one silly thing is bugging me. Where are the song groove settings now? I want to put a swing on my track.

How to stop Renoise from capturing special mouse buttons?
Hi, I have some xtra mouse buttons on my mouse. I use them to control Keyboard Maestro and run macros + tasks + scripts.
Unfortunately, Renoise wants to get in on the action, and captures the extra mouse buttons and does stuff with them. I don’t want that to happen.
How do I stop Renoise capturing the special mouse buttons?

Linuxmusic.rocks - software/plugins database
Hello,
I would like to show you mine ongoing project of creating linux music software/plugins database - http://linuxmusic.rocks.
Project is still in development, i think i covered most of paid software and big amount of free/open source ones.
Each software have picture of its interface or controls visible in ardour, there is placeholder for description and i hope to add it in near future :), or at least copy one provided by developer, if allowed.
Some software/plugins might be in wrong categories, for example tool category in effects was placeholder for everything i couldnt fit, and maybe at some point i decided to create dedicated category and forgot to move something from there.
I would appreciate any feedback.

Renoise crashing when opening projects
Latest Renoise version is randomly crashing a lot when opening songs. The error message says "unhandled exception in thread: GUI. It doesn’t matter if song uses external plugins or just built it devices, it crashes even when opening the tutorials that come bundled with Renose.
I’ve tried to disable all plugins and uninstalled the tools, but no difference.
I have attached the log file (it’s fresh). First project opened ok, after that I immediately opened a second project, which caused a crash.

Renoise and Reason 11 Intro
Just bought Reason 11 Intro in hope that it works with Renoise, as i used an older Demo (ver. 10) of Reason and it was possible to rewire with Renoise. Now, i can’t rewire because i dont see the reason device… any hints? I heard that Reason 11 lost the Rewire-Support, is that true? I think the only thing else i could do is to use something like an “internal” Midi-Loop-Back than, right? …but using Rewire would be the best solution, for recording i guess
