Symbolic Links and Directories Can Create Pseudo Tag Expressions in Disk Browser
Since Samples in Disk Browser can display symbolic links, I found that if I put a symbolic link of the target sample in a directory, I can use that directory as a tag.
https://0x0.st/X3WC.mp4This is useful because it allows a single file to have multiple meanings.
This is necessary because there are some sounds that are in between kick and tom, for example, or crash cymbal and ride cymbal.
At least on Linux, the above method would work.
It might be possible to do it with macOS symlinks or Windows shortcut files, but I don’t know.
I hope this helps you.

Renoise doesn't find vst 'Alpha Forever '
It’s a modular software synth but the developer has choosen to retract the demo from it’s site
Anyway, he granted me acces to the Alpha forever discord server so I can testdrive it but renoise doesn’t see it.
I did a few rescans …no luck
Studio one finds it

Redux won't recall my default settings
Hi there,
I recently purchased Redux and I’m having trouble getting it to remember my default settings. It’s failing to recall the theme, sample and instrument bookmarks and other sampler settings even if I save them as a preset. What’s going on? Am I doing something wrong?
OS: Windows 10 Pro 22H2
Redux Build: Redux V1.3.5
DAW: Reaper V7.22 and Bitwig 5.0.11

How do I tell what instrument is being used on a note?
in this example the two notes circled in red are playing two different sounds, in famitracker for example there is an instrument number for each note. I cant see such a thing on renoise but there must be since it does remember which sounds to play

Renoise rounding decimals
hello peepz,
back on renoise after a while and very happy for it.
i’m trying to understand smth that’s quite crucial to me (though probably pointless for others), is there anyway to have 4 decimal precision in renoise from the interface?
meaning what happens in the rounding.
i see that it’s all rounded to 3 but i generally use a lot of exact 0.5 / 0.25/ etc amplitude scale for which to work properly, i need 4decimals in db. (ie 0.5= -6.0206 / 0.25= -12.0412 etc
any insights welcome
be well all.

[SOLVED] Keyboard doing weird things?
Alright I’m going insane over this shit, why did my keyboard change colors and for some reason when I play some notes it plays others and some notes just can’t be played anymore?! There are no options for this? I can’t find anything in settings and it just “happened” out of the blue… wtf is this?
It’s ONLY on my vocal instrument too. What is this for and how do I change it back?

Beginner quesiton : Choosing a DAW Controller - Icon P1-Nano
Hello guys,
I use Renoise since a long time, and hooked an Arturia Keystep for the keyboard. I know it is possible to control most (all?) of Renoise settings by mapping MIDI to commands and buttons, but I never did that before.
In order to improve my setup, I’d love to acquire a DAW Controller. I found the ICON P1-Nano along with its D5 Oled screen that seems to suit, as it is very compact, has lots of features according to the manual.
It is said it supports 3 DAWs simultaneously, and comes with a list of supported ones mentioned in the user manual. As you guessed, there is no mention of Renoise. I just see on their manual that the P1-Nano is Mackie Protocol compliant, and also obviously able to send MIDI messages.
● Supports Universal Mackie Control and HUI protocols for seamless integration
with compatible music production software.
● Supports Ability, Audition, Ableton Live, Bitwig, Cakewalk, Cubase/Nuendo,
Digital Performer, FL Studio, Mixbus 32C, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Reaper, Reason,
Samplitude, Studio One and Tracktion Waveform.
I didn’t find a clear mention of how to interface easily the P1-Nano to Renoise, even on this forum. There seem to be at least one Renoise Tool that can handle this Mackie Protocol (Duplex Duplex - is it dead? - Renoise Tools - Renoise Forums), but I know nothing about this protocol as I never had such a controller before.
My questions are probably simple for some of you, and would help take my decision:
-
Is it possible to use such a controller to control Renoise (Probably yes, I guess) ?
-
Would any VST plugin parameters that I would load into Renoise be also assignable ? I’m using some Korg and Air VSTi and VSTfx.
-
Is Renoise able to send back status and values of the parameters to the P1-Nano, as it has a motorized fader, but also many screens to feedback information such as channel volume and pan, and others. I guess that is related to the Mackie Protocol but maybe it’s also possible using MIDI messages.
-
Am I doing wrong by looking at this P1-Nano, there are so many DAW controllers. My criteria are clearly compact size, rich features and ease of use once configured.
I’d like to know if I’m doing right before ordering the P1-Nano, so all your answers are welcome. Meanwhile I’ll continue to read about the Mackie Protocol and try to understand how the Duplex tool works.
Best regards,
Bruno

Failed to initialize WASAPI device: Permission denied
Hello everyone. I’m struggling since a couple of days on an audio issue with Renoise latest version :
-
I have reinstalled my laptop recently from scratch (Windows 10 Pro, latest version), reinstalled all my music software (renoise, mpc2, xmplay, vlc, standalone and vst plugins etc).
-
All work okay with all that software, except Renoise that can’t open the audio device. When I start Renoise, or when I go to the Audio settings in renoise and try to select either DirectSound or Wasapi output, I get error messages such as this :
Renoise
Failed to initialize WASAPI device: Permission denied
WASAPI dailed to open. Trying to open DirectSound instead…
Failed to initalize audio buffers for device: ‘Primary Sound Device’. Audio is disabled. Please try to choose a different device or samplerate.
-
When I use ASIO drivers (for example the MPC Asio, Zoom H5 Asio), I don’t have the issue and the audio works.
-
All other audio software I have are able to open either the DirectSound or Wasapi outputs without complaining. Xmplay is able to precisely select the device and it works, for example.
-
I followed the advice I found on the other posts in the forum that could be related, nothing changes. I uninstalled completely the

The drivers and devices are based on a standard Realtek chip on the motherboard :
Device Manager / Audio inputs and outputs
- Speakers (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
- Microphone Array(Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
- Headphones (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
- Headset Microphone (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
Driver provider: Microsoft
Driver date: 06.12.2019
Driver version: 10.0.19041.1
Device Manager / Sound, video and game controllers
- Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)
Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp
Driver date: 29.05.2020
Driver version: 6.0.8958.4
I tried to Update those drivers, then Disable+Enable the devices, then Uninstall Device and Reboot (Windows reinstalled them at startup automatically), and finally Uninstall Driver too and rebooting (Windows reinstalled them at startup too).
-
The samplerate is 48000Hz. I also tried to change the samplerate settings on Renoise without success.
-
Finally, I completely uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled Renoise x64 3.4.4.
But the issue is still there (Permission Denied on. And I do not have those issues with any other software except Renoise.
Many thanky to everyone who could have a clue on why this is happening, and only with Renoise…
Best Regards from Switzerland,
Bruno

How to stop the knobs on MIDI keyboard from adjusting panning?
Hello, when I try to use the knobs on my MIDI keyboard to apply local effects in renoise, it properly sets the effects, but improperly changes panning, which causes the effect to not work. Even when setting effects unrelated to panning like Cxy and Dxx, it still adjusts the panning. Does anyone know how to get it to stop changing the panning??? Also the keyboard I am using is called midiplus minicontrol, in case that’s relevant.
I added an image of what happens when I try to set Cxy using my midi keyboard. The part circled is panning.

Windows: Renoise change your maximized size after auto off monitor
I have 3 image monitors:
- 3440x1440, 34" (main)
- 1920x1080, 24"
- 1920x1080, 14" tactile
Steps:
- I maximize Renoise on monitor 2.
- Windows automatically turns off the monitor after a few minutes according to its settings (screen saver).
- When automatically turning on the monitor by moving the mouse, the Renoise window size is not restored correctly with the maximized size of monitor 2.
- Maybe Renoise use in this case the size of monitor 1? The thing is that it appears with a much larger window size. It should retain the exact size after autoturn on the monitor.
In short, in these cases, it seems that Renoise does not handle the size of windows with different image monitors of different resolutions well. I think it probably happens with undocked windows (mixer/instrument) as well.
I think this issue is quite old…
To test these things you should have several image monitors with different resolutions and check what happens to the size of the Renoise windows, when turning monitors on/off, both manually and by auto-management, also testing pinned and unpinned windows…

Delayed sound issue
Currently I’m working on a song and I’m facing this behavior:
I can live with it, but nevertheless I wonder why it’s happening. As you can see the sound doesn’t start immediately after hitting play, instead it’s “shifted” by not less than 16 positions. “Picture and sound” don’t match. The CPU is at 46% according to Renoise while playing the song, so the CPU power is seemingly not the problem. So my question is: What could cause that delay of audible sound after hitting play?

Delete track DSP Automation/Envelopes with mouse click
To delete automation recorded on a track DSP, you must right-click to bring up a menu, or click to go to the Automation Editor window, right-click on the corresponding automation, and delete it.
https://0x0.st/Xxd2.mp4 Expected behaviorIt would be useful to be able to remove automation using the following operation.
- Alt+Click
- Delete All Envelopes in Current Pattern
- Delete All Pattern Commands in Current Pattern
- Alt+Ctrl+Click
- Delete All Envelopes in Song
- Delete All Pattern Commands in Song

Considering doing a cover of an old .mod file. It seems unlikely that I will be able to contact the original author for permission. Would it be bad to release it in an album?
There’s an old mod called “Klim’s Theme” that u4ia wrote in remembrance of a friend of his who died. I always remember listening to it and thinking “Wow, I wonder if I will lose a friend one day…”. Well, it’s finally happened.
I’m working on a 12 song album in dedication to her. 11 of the songs are original, but I had the idea to cover Klim’s Theme. I tried to dig around and see if I could find any contact information for u4ia, but I didn’t turn up much.
My cover wouldn’t include any samples or pattern data from the original song, just my own recreation/cover in a different style (most likely slower, with more of a synth lead instead of piano).
I can’t decide whether it would be ethically OK to include this in the album if I end up i.e. putting it on Spotify or something. I may end up just doing an “internal use” only version, and omitting it from any published album.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It’s not like I’m a big name artist, so honestly if I hadn’t mentioned it, I’m sure I could “get away with it” and nobody would ever notice or care. But, I do want to properly respect the art and intellectual property of other musicians.
Thanks for any input.

Difference between load_track_device_chain and load_track_device_preset?
hi, what is the difference between
renoise.app():load_track_device_chain(filename) -> [boolean] renoise.app():load_track_device_preset(filename) -> [boolean]i have a .xrnt and it loads with device chain
i have a xrdp, and it doesn’t seem to load with device preset loader. what’s going on here?
also, this seems to be destructive! meaning, if there’s content on the trackdsp and you load a track device chain, it is not appended, instead overwritten.

Failed to start audio device
Hi
What ever audio device I select, I get this (screenshot) error message. It is the same for headphones, etc.
Changing device or samplerate does not make a difference.
It used to work with my plain standard notebook speakers ?!
What am I missing?

Emergence granular cannot be scanned
I just spent 20 dollars on a VST called Emergence which is a granular, and i read through the installation instructions and added it to the required directory and renoise refuses to scan it. I have tried 4 hours trying to fix it and i’m at my wits end thinking about requesting a refund from the website
