Mutant Breaks Competition #16: Save The Space
Time for another Mutant Break Competition? Why not, life is short and they are fun!
Save The Space:
Back in the day computer memory and storage space were at a premium. It has been said that limitation breeds creativity. Let’s put that to the test and make a track with limited sample memory available. In honor of the mighty floppy disk HD, that limit has been set at 147456.000 bytes. Use Martblek free Low Resource Tool to measure your sample usage. See both the rules and instructions down below for more details.
Competition starts: Saturday January 6th, 2024 Hawaii Standard Time.
Competition ends: Sunday February 4th, 2024 Hawaii Standard Time.
Voting starts: Monday February 5th, 2024 Hawaii Standard Time.
Voting ends: Monday February 19th, 2024 Hawaii Standard Time.
Prizes:
Free custom t-shirt for the winner. Shipped wherever it can be legally shipped to, free of charge. Winner is responsible for any import duties and custom fees.
Design to be confirmed.
Rules:
- Use Martblek’s free Low Resource Tool to measure your sample usage.
- Set your sample limit to 147456.000 bytes.
- No external effects. If you want that sound, bake into your sample.
- Samples only, no VST instruments. Yes, you are allowed sample VSTs or external gear.
- Must be between 3 and 6 minutes long.
- Your XRNS file must be shared publicly.
Your sample usages cannot exceed more than 100% of 147456.000 bytes as measured by Marblek’s Low Resource tool. That tool’s measurement is judge, jury & executioner.
Judging Criteria:
Will be announced January 6th, 2024.
Instructions:
Download Martblek’s free Low Resource Tool here.
Install it by dragging and dropping into Renoise. It should then be available in the Tools menu.
Once opened, set the limit in bytes to: 1474560.000
Use the toggle button to display your current sample usage. Shown in the left hand corner, next to the Hide/Show Track DSP pane and Hide/Show Track automation editor pane.
Special thanks:
@martblek for making the low resource tool. Without it this competition would not be possible.
@onyme your thread sparked the idea for this competition.
@slujr for the encouragement to set up this competition.

MIDI Clock PPQN adjust
The manual reads: “The MIDI Clock master sends a series of 24 ppqn (pulses per quarter note) beat clock messages to all slaves.”
But one of my slaves can only be set at settings between 48 and 960 PPQN.
What is the problem?
My triplets are not triplets anymore but something irregular.
Is there a reason there is no way to manually set the PPQN for the Renoise MIDI Clock master?
Or is it just not implemented (yet)?
I’m not sure the problem would be solved, if it could be set so both have the same PPQN, but I wonder why it is a fixed PPQN, knowing that a mismatch can cause problems.

Play more than one instrument with one note
Hello,
So I have two sliced up breaks in two individual instruments.
I have one drum pattern in a track and I want to trigger both instruments. I need the exact same notes for both instruments, because the slices are the same timing wise, the second break is a layer.
The only solution I found right now is to make another track, copy paste the notes and then swap the notes to the new instrument using advanced edit… This seems redundant. Is there a way to trigger more than one instrument with one note?

How can I implement memory limitation for a project on loading samples?
I really like the memory limitation on my polyend tracker, I would like to have such limitation in renoise, can it be organized through scripts or some other way?
It’s very inspiring and disciplining to use less samples.

A.I. Sample Generation
What’s up Renoise Gang!! Just wanting to know everyone’s opinion on A.I for sample generation. I’m pretty big on the vocals and whatnot and Output has a pretty cool A.I. for other instruments as well.
I was thinking maybe a tool(I’m a Renoise Tool enthusiast too ) that could access an online A.I. and chuck those samples in the Renoise Sampler(which is the best thing since sliced bread btw)
Here’s a pretty neat vid by DJ Pain1 covering a few things.
I’m pretty intrigued by this new wave of A.I. But what do you guys think?

Instrument/song not rendering properly
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to export a whole song but I noticed that the tonality of one of my instrument changes completely when it’s rendered, both in the .wav file and during playback in the renoise session. If I reload the instrument the instrument I retrieve my original sound but each time I render the song or the instrument the sound is again altered.
It is supposed to be a soft and mellow pad sound before switching to a much harsher sound which doesn’t fit my track…
I did some experimentation on a new and blank session and the problem is still here. I even tried to record the original sound straight from Renoise just after loading the instrument with third party plugin such as Silverspike TapeIt but again this doesn’t work…
I uploaded the instrument on wetransfer, if it’s any help and if someone can test it and tell me if they find the same problem as me : WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free
Thanks for your help

The holidays are coming up, you’ve already rewatched your favourites and nothing new looks any good. So here’s five lesser known movies all completely different from each other, covering a wide variety of genres, and hopefully you’ll find something that sparks your interest. If time investment is an issue don’t worry cos, unlike a lot of films these days, they’re all only 90 mins long.

Do not copy pattern section row when duplicating one or more patterns right underneath
Currently, when a pattern that is right after a pattern section row is duplicated, Renoise not only creates a duplicate of the pattern but also the pattern section row above it.
Duplicating a block of patterns also does this but only if the top pattern in the block is right under a pattern section row.
On the other hand, duplicating a pattern that is under a pattern section row, but it’s not right after it, duplicates the pattern without duplicating the pattern section row.
The duplication of sections like this is really confusing. If I duplicate a block of patterns and see a bunch of sections duplicated as well, it makes me have to review what I did because seeing all those new sections makes it look like nothing happened. It’s hard to explain.
That said, the ideal situation is to allow sections to be selectable rows. If a user wants copy/paste or duplicate a section row, they should be allowed to do so by selecting it and performing the function, instead of Renoise deciding when to do so.

Screen resolution requirement - Linux
Hi, longtime Renoise user here, looking for help with a pretty simple question.
I’m looking to build a small Raspberry Pi machine, solely to run Renoise as an external sequencer to send program changes to my Keystep Pro. This would be much cheaper and easier for me than purchasing and learning how to use another external sequencer. It needs to be small enough to fit on my synth board, so my laptop won’t work for this, and I’m planning to purchase a very small touchscreen monitor for the Raspberry Pi.
My (latest) concern is screen resolution. The devices that seem to best fit my needs have pretty low resolution, 800x480. Elsewhere on the Renoise website, the screen resolution requirements are listed for Linux as: “min 1024x768 pixels”.
Am I correct in understanding that Renoise will not even boot on a Linux device with resolution lower than 1024x768?
Or, will it boot up and run, but I will be unable to see the full GUI at any given time? Just being able to boot and run would meet my needs as I will have no need to see the entire GUI on the Raspberry Pi.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I appreciate any help with this or with other issues I could run into with this project. Pete

Trigger note once every x pattern repeats?
Is it possible to use an effect like Yxx to trigger a note, but instead of it being probabilistic it definitely triggers the note every x number of pattern repeats?
For example, say I have a pattern that’s 10 steps in length and I put a crash cymbal sample at the top of the pattern. How can I get it to trigger the sample on the first iteration, and then wait 3 more loops before it triggers that note again?
Thanks in advance!
