Automatic Designated Track Colours?

March 3, 2024 - 20:22

Hi all,

A bit of a odd question, and not exactly important, but simple curiosity etc…

I am currently enjoying a oldschool Sunday night nostalgic trip, and loading up tracker files from beloved Amiga games. I noticed the colour bar at the top of each individual track is not default, as I assumed it would be, but rather random. At least at first glance.

It wasn’t until I loaded up “Into The Wonderful”, a Bitmap Bro’ classic from the game, Gods, that I noticed all the track colour bars were slightly different shades/saturations of the same general colour. I tried other tunes and noticed different results.

This does not seem random (at least to me), but rather (possibly) based on some criteria… Loudness, density of notes or input commands? Am I mad, or is there something at work here? I will admit to having a few glasses of red, but not so much that my curiosity can be called into question.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Redux & MIDI instruments

March 3, 2024 - 16:12

As I’m using multitrack recording & renoise sequencing together, which is a rather complex workflow, I wanted to try how using Redux in a DAW would work out.

Now… Can I sequence my external synths with Redux through MIDI some way???
Or is it really completely restricted to samples?

(I hope it is not…)

If it is not restricted to samples, what am I not seeing to drive my external synth with redux?

2 versions of Renoise installed after update?

March 3, 2024 - 15:55

I don’t know why, but after I updated to version 3.4.3 (x64), for some reason version 3.4.2 is still installed, but there is no uninstall for that version. Only for 3.4.3…

I also needed to set up all settings again for renoise 3.4.3, where I would expect all settings & history would be transferred after an update.

Anyone who can help me solve this without having to flea out manually how and where to delete files, settings and possible registry settings.

(Running windows 11)

NewStyle AXS 3.0b4 Win32 Now Up on Archive.org>>>

March 3, 2024 - 02:49

Hello, been awhile as I can’t access here from any XP browser… However have a windows 10 machine soon to become XP again so figured I’d update on here while I can…

Just uploaded AXS onto archive.org today…App, skins I made, charts, manuals, fan wall & GIFs, song start templates, tunes I made, utilities, My custom synth bank, tutorial GIFs…etc…

Internet Archive AXS 3.0b4 Win32 Full Pack : NewStyle : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming :...

Hello... This is AXS 3.0b4 Tracker for Windows with 'Full Service' archive having many extra skins I made as well as manuals, charts, bonus helper utilities, ...

There are more of my old skins than new-

https://i.ibb.co/WVysttw/AXSskin-Final.gif(image larger than 4 MB)

I recently made some new one’s that I have changed the 2.03 to the correct 3.0

Certainly not for replacing anything I like it’s extreme stability (no crashing ever) & can handle most any kinda sample size matters not even saves large song files one I did was over 200 MB pretty good for a 460 KB Tracker… Has note velocity based filter modulation for samples & synth & ‘smart patterns’ which Arguru incorporated into NoiseTrekker 2 & are still there in current Protrekkr…

Great sidekick 16 tracks, multi-timbral subtractive synth that still sounds great… MIDI input works well too if you wanna use the synth as a sound generator…

Has a ‘unified’ stereo environment so no panning except for delay pan. But with the smart patterns one can export a track at a time then bring into multi-track… Have not done that yet as I like to be more what? A purist? A hoar tracker?

If you are not interested but are curious of the sound here is most recent, no post process-

Before is this one…I closed this soundcloud account about a year ago but they seem like they’ll never delete it. Soundcloud is the new facebook>>>

A 30 second jingle for those with little time or poor attention span-

I have more but I think that’s enough to get most running for the door…

LFO Reset issue-- Doofer effect commands ignored if value hasn't changed?

March 1, 2024 - 17:42

Maybe it’s not a bug but more of an inconsistency:

If I want to reset an LFO every pattern, I can put a reset command in the effects column: XX00
This works as expected

However, if I place that LFO inside a doofer, and assign one of the macro knobs to the LFO’s reset button, it appears that any pattern commands using that macro will be ignored unless there is a change in value. Since I’m always resetting the LFO to the start (00), it will always be ignored.

Currently I can work around this by placing a higher value in another FX column to the left.

Is there a reason Doofers work like this? I don’t know of any other native effect or plugin that behaves this way

Lua recursive operations

March 1, 2024 - 15:39

Lately I’ve been using pure data to make some single cycle waveforms .
For that I use an uzi object , which is bassically a recursive operation that fills a table object .
Connecting the cooefficients -variables to the trigger input of the uzi object ( which is blazingly fast ) we get a really fast gui update .
My question is , is lua capable of doing that , iow trigger a recursive operation exampel 2pi rad sin *sin pow^2 etc…and write that into an audio table (audio table = renoise sampler ) ?
This would explain the multiple audio tools for renoise , and I might consider learning the language .

I set my midi controller as midi in. And it works with makros on other devices. But how can i map knops of my vst with my controller?
The knobs of the vst are not light up in the learn mode.

Better search feature for the Disk Browser

March 1, 2024 - 02:53

In the Disk Browser, it would be really useful if you could search and see results from within all subfolders. So, if you search “string” it would show “String Section.sfz” “STRINGS/01.WAV” etc.

I’ve noticed that the Instrument Presets list has a search bar:

but it’s not very useful for me since it only shows .xrni and .xi files, and it can only search in the Renoise library folders.

Formula Device AMA

March 1, 2024 - 00:41

Sorry to spam the formula device today, but I was thinking…

I’ve tried a number of approaches to helping other users better use the formula meta device to achieve their renoise dreams, but I haven’t really felt that helpful with any of them. It’s a totally under-utilized part of renoise, as far as I see from the anecdotal evidence of the forum.

So I’m starting this topic as a place where you can ask me anything about the formula device, and I can try to help you understand / do whatever you think you want to do with it via a more conversational approach, cuz I use it a fair amount so I’ve figured some stuff out, and I have the perception that there are things that people want to do within renoise that could actually only (or sometimes most efficiently) be achieved with the formula device. Most of the real programmers of the forum seem to put their time into tools (understandably), but my interest in cybernetics has led to be more interested in merely what control-signals can be achieved.

I’ll share a couple of super simple presets that people can look at for consideration:

playing_value_on_off.xrdp (671 Bytes)

This just allows you to set a value with input A, and then will output either that value or 0, depending on if the playhead is stopped or playing, respectively.

pattern_ramp.xrdp (675 Bytes)

This preset just outputs a “ramp waveform” that starts at 0 at the beginning of the pattern, and rises to 1 (full value) by the end.

You could use the output to control the reset of an LFO like the following device chain, so you can use different waveforms instead of an ascending ramp (note, LINE was changed to LINEF, with the former increasing per line, and the latter increasing at the same overall rate, but with tick-fraction values, so it’s “smoother”).

pattern_length_lfo.xrnt (6.0 KB)

Start including some more meta-devices before you send your “control signals” to their eventual destinations and hoo boy, you’ve got a pretty complex signal chain!

Last note for now, in case you haven’t been told:
The formula device cannot control any parameter that the hydra (for instance) cannot control, and it can only change values as fast as your project’s tick rate
(so no audio-rate fm, grainscanning, etc. Only “tick rate” modulation can be achieved on exposed parameters)

Okay hope I can be of help, lmk if there’s something you’d like to do and we can have some fun

Formula Device Error

February 29, 2024 - 23:53

In the formula device, you will sometimes get an error that reads:

attempt to call a number value

I was able to figure out that it has to do with user variable names (excuse the example).
The code provided is completely legitimate, and the workaround that I use is to add a +0 to the end like so:

which can then be removed to achieve the originally desired behavior:

I’m not sure if this has something to do with Lua evaluation outside of @taktik 's control, or if the way evaluation is implemented can be changed. But I think you see the problem and it actually comes up for me quite often. I’m not sure if other formula-heads have ran into it but I haven’t heard of it.

Bug(?): LFOs never stop

February 28, 2024 - 23:23

Description:
As soon as you add an LFO device it starts running, even if the song is not playing, and it doesn’t stop when the song is stopped. This is problematic when editing patches on hardware as 1) it can interfere with editing and sending patch data due to clogging up midi processing/bandwidth 2) is changing the values you wanted to edit constantly until you disable the LFO or midi device.

Steps to reproduce look like this:

  1. Launch Renoise
  2. Make a new song
  3. Add an LFO to one track (note that it is already running when the track is stopped here)
  4. press play
  5. press stop
  6. press stop again

Expected results:
an LFO doesn’t start when added if the song is not playing, and stops when song is stopped

Actual results:
LFO starts when added and never stops

New Tool (3.4) genpad

February 27, 2024 - 04:49
genpad

A future collection of helper popups that you can use to generate stuff. Currently only one pad is available. The idea here is to have some handy popups that can be controlled with a few keys (mostly just the arrows) to offer a sort of gamepad like control-scheme (although the tool doesn’t respond to actual gamepad inputs out-of-the-box).

Provides key-bindings in Pattern Editor / Tools and in Phrase Editor / Tools

  • genpad - euclidean

Similar entries can be found in the context menu of the pattern and the phrase editor.

euclidean

Generate euclidean rhythms from a set of notes in a pattern or a phrase.

usage
  • Have some notes in a pattern or a phrase
  • Launch the euclidean genpad.
  • Select parameters using the Up and Down arrow
  • Adjust them by pressing Left or Right (hold Ctrl/Command for bigger steps)
  • The pattern will be continuously changed while you are adjusting
  • Press Enter or bounce around when you are happy

You can start from a single note or multiple notes, you can even use chords or a mix of single notes and chords. These notes will be collected when you launch the genpad and will be used as a note-pool to fill your pulses. If there are less notes in the pool than pulses you picked, they will be repeated over and over.

You can select a range inside the pattern to only generate the rhythm there, if you haven’t selected anything or only selected a single line, the rhythm will be generated over the entire pattern.

parameters rhythm
  • pulses - the number of pulses to distribute over the selected steps
  • steps - how many steps to distribute the pulses over
  • rotate - rotate the generated pulse-rhythm across the steps
  • offset - rotate the resulting rhythm by a line offset in the pattern
notes
  • cycle - cycle the pattern of notes you have (if you only selected a single note or the same one multiple times, this parameter will have no effect on the output)
  • repeats - number of times to use each note from your note-pool, for example if you have notes C, E, B and set repeats to 2 the pattern will contain notes as C, C, E, E, B, B
swing
  • swing - the amount of swing to apply to pulses that fall into the swing-window
  • size - how many lines to repeat the swing pattern over, by default this should match your LPB
  • window - where to start applying the swing inside the size, for example if you have 4 lines-per-beat with a swing size of 4, a window of 2 will mean the swing amount will be applied to lines 3 and 4 in each beat
  • shift - shift the swing-window around to swing different parts of the beat
delay
  • delay - apply a uniform delay to every generated note
  • snap - by default the generated notes will be quantized to lines, if you want actual equal distribution of pulses you can switch this to none and have wonky rhythms

You can reset each parameter to the default value using Backspace.

Retrigger Velocity

February 25, 2024 - 20:43

Retrigger Velocity

I noticed something interesting about the velocity of retriggered notes - Rxy - when the x value is something other than 0 or 8. They transmit different versions depending on whether there’s an accompanying note or not.

PC Latency problem

February 25, 2024 - 08:36

So I really don’t know how to deal with it anymore.
After the total necessary reinstallation of Win, I am not able to render sound without having some sound artifacts. This is not only about Renoise, but in general, even when listening. I tried different drivers but still nothing. I tried the recommended things, turned off the services but still nothing
Any idea ?

Mystery Palace of Sauntersaus

February 24, 2024 - 03:21

"The Mystery Palace is the home of the antihegemon, flipping the pyramid scheme on its head. The polar inversion of hierarchy, play the Mystery Ticket and take the ride to new realities made manifest.

The Mystery Palace is the refuge of the antihierarch, embodiment of the movement from BELOW to ABOVE, the urging of uplift of all people from the cruel downpression pulling mankind to demise. Flip the pyramid on its head and make a polar inversion of hierarchy.
The polar inversion of all hierarchy, mr. rich come down! Your high horse is hereby overturned.

“Now I am at last relentless,
I declare that the social order is to be superseded by another social order.
I know the quality of your folly when you go about the streets looking in the dust of noisy oratory for the complete state.
I know very well that when the complete state appears it will be because you bring it to others, not because others bring it to you.
And I know that you will bring it, not as a burden upon your back, but as something unscrolled within.”
-Traubel"

Hope you enjoy this new album!
