Creating Preferences for a Tool?

April 6, 2024 - 18:05

Hi. I wanna save the Preferences of a Tool. Namely, I now (finally, 13 years later…) have a GUI that lets me dynamically create shortcuts for the Native Devices.
But when I go to modify the script, or restart Renoise, they are, obviously, lost.

Now, if only there was some way of saving a preference with the enabled Shortcuts, and then recreating them at will.

Maybe this would mean that there’d be a way of initializing the LUA GUI from the Preferences, and showing which ones are already there in the preferences (= therefore already created as shortcuts).

but what I don’t know is what is the method for getting this action going.

LUA Crash with GUI buttons

April 6, 2024 - 16:48

this seems to cause a crash:

local action_buttons = vb:horizontal_aligner { mode = "distribute", width = "100%", vb:button { text = "Load Device(s)", width = "40%", notifier = function() loadSelectedNativeDevices() end }, vb:button { text = "Load Device(s) & Close", width = "60%", notifier = function() loadSelectedNativeDevices() if custom_dialog and custom_dialog.visible then custom_dialog:close() end end }, vb:button { text = "Cancel", width = "100%", notifier = function() if custom_dialog and custom_dialog.visible then custom_dialog:close() end end } }

am using macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and Renoise 3.4.3 (?) on Apple Silicon.

Flash Card Tips and Tricks

April 6, 2024 - 15:01

Thought maybe it was a good idea to start a thread on very simple tips and tricks that can be easily implemented, are quick and can be understood by anybody.Hopefully it works out…could be good…lets see.
Maybe put the tip in bold or something so anybody can quickly scan the thread.

I have a new rule i just started implementing and it seems to work really well.
Whenever i EQ something i will make a point to notch a frequency out as well, could be a large notch could be a tiny notch could be a lot of gain could be very little. The point is,

Whenever i EQ i will ALWAYS notch.

In the end, over multiple tracks and hundreds of samples, this rule makes a huge difference.

Renoise Visuals

April 6, 2024 - 14:12

I think it would be very cool if Renoise had a naitive visualizer that could be coded in LUA or something else.

Without being too lengthy maybe utilizing the ability to use an openGL script, puredata GEM, winamp video plug-in, or something similar to the scripts used for touchdesigner or wallpaper engine.

Not a shameless self promo but i use the stock Renoise spectogram for creating visuals often. This can be seen on my instagram. @.vifyrv.

Does anybody else have any thoughts on this? I am curious if anybody would be interested or excited in seeing something like this become available in the future?

Sample editor waveforms

April 5, 2024 - 17:59

Hi guys can anyone tell me why despite the sample editor showing this professionally mastered house track as completely clipped and maxed out. Yet when I play it renoise doesn’t clip (with track volume set to 0db).

I’m getting in to mastering more seriously atm and this is really bugging me as renoise seems to pushing us towards an unrealistically quiet (by 2024 standards) volume for our tracks. Not looking for a loudness wars discussion but any insights are appreciated, is renoise even the right tool for analysing tracks like this?

Cheers

Customize the names of notes in the pattern editor, and save them as presets (would be useful for microtonal music)

April 5, 2024 - 03:14

One basic feature that Renoise lacks that a lot of other trackers (e.g. FamiTracker and OpenMPT) have is the ability to toggle between sharps and flats.

I think an even better idea would be to have 3 modes: sharp, flat, and custom. The toggle to switch between them would be in the transport panel to the right of the octave selector. When you select custom, there will be a menu where you can select, create, edit, or load a preset.

Each preset would contain a 3-character string for the name of each note. Or, an alternative would be to specify how many notes per octave, and a 2-character string for each note in an octave. The preset would also be saved in the .xrns file.

The most useful use for this feature would be microtonal music. For example, for 31edo, you could rename the 17th note of the 5th octave to either ‘175’ or ‘H-5’, depending on what you think is easier to read.

Of course, Renoise would need the ability to load .scl files (another feature OpenMPT has) for this feature to be useful. Together, these 2 features would make Renoise the best DAW for composing microtonal music.

Another use case would be renaming the notes to use solfege (perhaps this could be included as a default option).

SAve dialogue of a vst after renoise clese

April 4, 2024 - 21:13

I am a big fan of the wonderfull vst synth called tranzistow .
In the latest update there is a bug that is beyond the scope of the developer
WHenever a new patch is loaded a save dialogue pops up for confirmation , but when ignoring this dialogue and closing renoise ,the dialogue closes with renoise but is still active , and thus windows desktop becomes unresponsive …here’s a quote from the developer about the issue

quote

Yes, weird, I agree. I noticed this with Renoise only - “Save Yes/No” dialog was hanging after closing the DAW for the reasons which are out of my scope (because I cannot debug the DAW). I reworked them to use standard Windows MessageBox function in the latest version and now Renoise just closes/ignores them on exit. Still weird but at least they are not hanging anymore.

Are you saying that you have the same problem with the latest version (2024-04-03) too?

How to get "warm sounding" saturation and reverb with the native effects?

April 3, 2024 - 23:53

I have my own ways of achieving this but it’s mostly by trial and error and doesn’t get the best results, so I was wondering what other people here do.

  1. How do I get a “warm” sounding saturation effect or tape saturation effect with the native effects? I try to use distortion for this (haven’t experimented with cabinet simulator that much) but for either of those two native effects which parameters should I avoid or use to get this effect? Or if there’s another way to do it easily in Renoise, let me know.

  2. Similarly, I find the native mpreverb is often too metallic, harsh, cold, or “ping”-y. How should I change the parameters to get a more warm reverb? I’m especially interested in the kind of warm, spacey, and long style of reverb that something like an Empress reverb pedal can produce.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Calling vV, or anyone who knows how to copy sample from Note-On Layer to Note-Off Layer?

April 3, 2024 - 15:07

Is there a way of copying a sample from the Note-On Layer to the Note-Off Layer using LUA API, or has that been misplaced by the API altogether?
I used to have a functioning script that would let me copy samples from note-on layer to note-off layer and even change the pitch, which was amazing. @vvoois wrote it i think. i tried to modify it to work with Renoise 3 but it doesn’t seem to.
here’s what i’m working with

--vV's wonderful sample keyzone noteon/noteoff copier + octave transposition for note-off: local NOTE_ON = renoise.Instrument.LAYER_NOTE_ON local NOTE_OFF = renoise.Instrument.LAYER_NOTE_OFF local function copy_note_layers(source_layer,target_layer,offset) local instrument = renoise.song().selected_instrument_index --delete target layers prior to copying (to prevent overlays) if #renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[target_layer] > 0 then --Note that when using the delete_sample_mapping, the index is changing on-the-fly --So you have to remove the mappings from the last to the first entry instead of vice versa. --Else you get errors half-way. for i = #renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[target_layer],1,-1 do renoise.song().instruments[instrument]:delete_sample_mapping_at(target_layer, i) end end for i = 1,#renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer] do local base_note = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].base_note local map_velocity_to_volume = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].map_velocity_to_volume local note_range = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].note_range local sample_index = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].sample -- local use_envelopes = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].use_envelopes local velocity_range = renoise.song().instruments[instrument].sample_mappings[source_layer][i].velocity_range local oct_base_note=nil oct_base_note=base_note+offset renoise.song().instruments[instrument]:insert_sample_mapping(target_layer, sample_index,oct_base_note,note_range,velocity_range) end end local function norm() copy_note_layers(NOTE_ON, NOTE_OFF, 0) end local function octdn() copy_note_layers(NOTE_ON, NOTE_OFF, 12) end local function octup() copy_note_layers(NOTE_ON, NOTE_OFF, -12) end local function octdntwo() copy_note_layers(NOTE_ON, NOTE_OFF, 24) end local function octuptwo() copy_note_layers(NOTE_ON, NOTE_OFF, -24) end renoise.tool():add_menu_entry{name="--Sample Mappings:Paketti..:Copy Note-On to Note-Off Layer +12", invoke = octup} renoise.tool():add_menu_entry{name="Sample Mappings:Paketti..:Copy Note-On to Note-Off Layer +24", invoke = octuptwo} renoise.tool():add_menu_entry{name="Sample Mappings:Paketti..:Copy Note-On to Note-Off Layer", invoke = norm}renoise.tool():add_menu_entry{name="Sample Mappings:Paketti..:Copy Note-On to Note-Off Layer -12", invoke = octdn} renoise.tool():add_menu_entry{name="Sample Mappings:Paketti..:Copy Note-On to Note-Off Layer -24", invoke = octdntwo}

How do I make Renoise send a wavefile (selected_sample_index) to an external app? I know how to boot up os.execute("appname") and i could send it a path to a sample, but how does one create a stable sample path?

April 3, 2024 - 15:05

How do I make Renoise send a wavefile (selected_sample_index) to an external app? I know how to boot up os.execute(“appname”) and i could send it a path to a sample, but how does one create a stable sample path?

So I wanna make Renoise send a sample directly to Ableton Live by referencing file with something? does the Renoise LUA API allow for referencing the selected_sample_index and delivering it as a wavefile “safely” (not talkin /tmp/blaablaa.wav - which would then consistently keep getting overwritten)

How to load a Device preset by name instead of number slot?

April 3, 2024 - 15:02

this is also about XRNT…
So I have this stuff

>>> rprint (renoise.song().selected_track.devices[2].presets) [1] => Init [2] => #SendPakettiInit [3] => Init [4] => Init2 >>> renoise.song().selected_track.devices[2].active_preset = 2

and i’d like to load the #SendPakettiInit of this #send device. but i don’t want to load it by saying “2”, because maybe the slot “2” is not that at all.

How do i make sure that instead of loading “some” preset that happens to be in preset slot, i always load “#SendPakettiInit”, please?

also, how can I load a XRNT? I have no way of changing the Send device settings since i can’t control “Keep Source” / “Mute Source”, only the Amount, Panning and Receiver. Need better control. my solution was to create a preset, but i need to be able to load it. but answering both quetsions would be amazing.

Dr4 Instruments

April 2, 2024 - 12:02

Renewing my apologies to the forum for the misunderstandings, I make a proposal for the future, it’s just a proposal, feel free to ignore it.
Why rather than creating continuous discussions for each instrument we create, which will then get lost in the labyrinth of the forum (and those with slow brains like mine take a while to understand the situation) let’s not start creating a sort of "user topic "?
For example I’ll open Dr4 Instruments and post all my instruments here.
I think of people like @slujr who create a lot of things, but for months I only saw the ReGranulizer, only now I’m finding everything else, if something like Zensphere Instruments existed, everything would be easier to find.

Let’s move on to the instruments.

Taking inspiration from “303 Clone-ish” and making a few changes to my taste, I tried to recreate a “perfect” emulation that is not perfect, of the TB-303.

The Accent control is something of a strange thing, not having figured out how to replicate it really faithfully, I replicated it quite creatively. The Decay is simply replicated to my taste. The rest should be faithful enough. To use the instrument you need to download NA Black
Obviously nothing prevents you from using the native distortion, but you won’t get the same result (and nothing stops you from replacing the pedal with your favorite one, if you have it)

Furthermore, nothing stops you from making changes and sharing again, in fact, I would be rather curious to see where a tool starts and where it ends up.

RE-303_Saw.xrni (28.7 KB)
RE-303_Square.xrni (26.7 KB)
RE-303_Triangle.xrni (15.3 KB) (experiment)

*Since I have a disease of naming things, my tools will be called RE-something, when external plugins are included, RN when is totally native. (REnoise / Renoise Native)
