Komu - 5 to 4 "Rhythm Roulette"

January 25, 2019 - 10:12

New track!
Little different approach than usual.
I decided to do my own “rhythm roulette”.
I went to crate digging and bought 4 records, and then sampled only sounds from those albums.
At first I only used 3 records, but then I decided to break the rules and sampled 2 other records!
So every sound you hear is from vinyl, 5 different records total.

https://choon.co/tracks/0ta39w8dci6/five-to-four/

All the samples that I found on those records:

Should I start “Komu’s Rhythm Roulette” monthly competition?

I want to display the currently selected track name in my controller gui. I’ve scoured through the applications and can seem to find any mapping for this.

Do I have to roll my own?

Not shy to do so, just some helpful pointers where

REAL Fasttracker 2 compatibility, using BASS.DLL

January 24, 2019 - 18:20

@sidwave wrote:

Hey

Fasttracker tunes sound wrong and dark (filtered) in Renoise.
I realize the complications of implementing real FT2 player (BASS.dll), in Renoise.
But my solution is to switth to FT2 mode, and Renoise can be somehow layered on top of this ?

This means, when working on loaded XM module, that you RENDER the XM samples to a buffer, and Renoise then operates on these renderings. I think my solution is good!

What you on this ??

Duplex and launchpad mk2 - expand it?

January 23, 2019 - 19:51

@Meef_Chaloin wrote:

I’ve been using a launchpad mk2 script from somewhere on this forum and it works well on the whole. But I recently did a live show using ableton and the Nativekontrol Arsenal script, and that treats the launchpad like layers of control and you can change what the layers are. It gives you a lot of control over many aspects and makes it simple and quick to change areas/layers.

This got me thinking about Duplex, I have set it up but mostly can’t be bothered to move it and set it up. So, in order to try to use my controller more I am thinking about using the states function to create a sort of shift button to toggle another set of mappings.

My plan is to use the mixer button as a momentary state button so when you press it the top left pad will be a record/edit pad ideally in red when enabled, there will be next and previous script pads maybe top right, and maybe a row of track mutes. So the state creates a navigation patch and quick place start recording or mute some tracks.

From reading the documentation it seems this is all fairly easily possible (although a massive challenge for me) and I think I understand how to do some of it at least but are there any other controller scripts that use states that I can have a look at? Any other thoughts on this approach?

Detachable mixer. Please

January 23, 2019 - 19:39

@Tumulte wrote:

If I had to select one easy improvment for the next version of renoise, this would be it :
A detachable mixer window.

For some reason, the sampler, the plugin, and the midi (??!!) windows are detachable, but what we all expect to have on a second screen is the mixer.

Pliz.

Thanks

(add to this, hi-dpi support, multi-track recording, MPE support, and unlimited vst folders and you got an actually fully featured modern DAW)

Console hangs/crashes when dumping some VST presetdata

January 23, 2019 - 16:31

@Ledger wrote:

When trying to print the active_preset_data on a loaded VSTi instrument, renoise will completely hang with no time-out, requiring user to manually crash.

To test, load a VSTi into the instrument list and run the following snippet in testpad:

local device = renoise.song().selected_instrument.plugin_properties.plugin_device print(device.active_preset_data)

Audio crackles when moving mouse over certain GUI elements

January 23, 2019 - 14:09

@Juno wrote:

Hello fellow Renoisers and Renoise Devs,

I have this issue on my previous and current studio computer.

Whenever I’m moving the mouse over the GUI, over certain elements, I have crackles in the audio. At first I thought they were random, but I noticed a pattern. It’s whenever the mouse moves over from van GUI region or element to another.

For example, when I move the mouse cursor from the scopes, over to the main tracker editor, when I crossover the border separating scopes and editor a crackle occurs. Likewise when I move towards the file browser, FX editor, the dragbar to the right of the main editor.

So it seems to be triggered by moving over a visual boundary.
Or is it still related to the audio driver somehow ?

I have this issue on two separated machines;

Specs old studio computer;

  • Intel Core i7-4770
  • nVidia Geforce GT 630 Silent video card 2GB VRAM
  • 8GB RAM
  • Sandisk 240 GB OS-Software SSD
  • 2 x WD Black 1TB hard drives
  • Windows 7

Specs new studio computer;

  • Intel Core i7-8700k
  • Intel UHD 630 integrated graphics
  • 32GB RAM
  • 500GB SSD for OS-software
  • 500GB SSD for VST-audio
  • 2TB Seagate hard drive (projects, audio)
  • Windows 10 Pro

Common on both machines

  • Firewire 400 PCIe addon card with texas instruments chipset (legacy driver)
  • 2 x Motu 828 MKII FW audio interfaces
  • Dual monitor 24" LG setup connected through HDMI

The Motu drivers used : MOTU Audio Installer v1.6.73220 (Release Date 2017-07-01) (latest available) and ASIO is used in Renoise.

The crackles occur always, no matter if buffer is set at 128 samples or 1024. Also happens when CPU load is really low, for example using a simple VST plugin which only uses 4% CPU as displayed withing Renoise.

I’m a bit clueless, this computer is a beast of a machine. Even the integrated graphics is more than adequate for my usage. But even with the previous machine with a discrete graphics card I had the issue.

It only happens in Renoise. When I’m using Reaper for example or Sound Forge I don’t have this issue.

Is it something that is triggered because of the way that Renoise renders graphics ?
Still audio(driver) related ?
Thus I have to buy new audio interfaces ?

I already tried playing with the settings in Renoise regarding the GUI, but no difference (more compatible gfx setting, FPS setting, …)

It would be a big investment to buy new audio interfaces, and I would hate to have the same issue after buying new interfaces. I don’t have any spare external interface lying around (with different connection type than firewire and different brand/drivers) so I can’t rule this out at the moment.

I’m a bit clueless right now. And it’s sometimes really annoying. It sounds like the audio is clipping sometimes, but it’s just related to this movement over elements. But certainly annoying when mixing / mastering, where you move around a lot.

Any ideas or pointers are really appreciated!

Play long sample, but insert silence trigger notes

January 23, 2019 - 13:01

@creme wrote:

Hi everyone,

Can anyone suggest the best way to play a sample but insert silence throughout please? The effect I’m looking for would almost be an arpeggiator, but rather than retriggering the note each time, it inserts arpeggiated silence. Is it simply the volume command?

Eg
Without

0--------------16---------------32
SAAAMMMMPPLLLEEEEE

With
0--------------16---------------32
SAA M M M P LL L E EEE

Does that make any sense?

Cheers!

way to enter Note Off besides caps lock ??

January 16, 2019 - 03:31

I'm having a total brainfart -- I swear there was an alternate method of inputting a Note Off into the tracker from the keyboard, besides the Caps Lock key.

Right? What am I forgetting ??

I really hate using capslock since it toggles that on and off every time....

Thanks!

Layering drums - phase cancellation

January 15, 2019 - 18:05

I wonder how you layer drums, e.g. by adding a sine wave for the low end on top of an other sample. It would be cool if it would be possible to show two samples at the same time to adjust the phase, etc.. Is this possible with Renoise or how do you do that?

What happens exactly while a Renoise midi reset?

January 15, 2019 - 12:12

Hi,

what exactly will happen if I double-left-click the Renoise stop button, esp. regarding VSTs? There will be send a midi reset message (what is this exactly), and what happens additionally? And will this reset always automatically done before a rendering?

Background: In UVI Falcon, one commercial preset will be almost destroyed, as soon as I do a reset, or a render. The support was so kind to analyze this issue and they told me, it is because Renoise uses MIDI CC120 while resetting, so lot of the parts of the sounds are muted or something. So I should unlearn midi cc 120.

Why I personally hate the whole idea of remixing.

January 15, 2019 - 01:29

Many young electronic music producers of today, especially young EDM producers, tend to make countless remixes of the latest tracks and trends, including other people's tracks. I just deeply suspect that a really major part of that is to make it commercially satisfactory, especially in the clubs.

To me, this is totally on the verge of disgusting. As an artistic composer, I really, really detest and despise the whole idea of remixing; it completely spoils the originality, blemishes the creativity, and totally contaminates the artistic integrity of the original track in the first place.

I've learned from experience to never let anybody remix my composition pieces ever again, no matter how much they offer, beg, plead, reason, pressure, or even threaten. Many times, many users on Soundcloud have remixed some of my pieces, and unfortunately those remixes seemed to have gotten more popular than the original pieces I composed. It just feels stupid. It is depressing and I wish I'd never let them remix my tracks.

If any artist, group, DJ or even record company offered to remix the pieces I composed over the years, I would promptly turn down their offers because I personally DO NOT trust those people who want to make remixes of other people's tracks. I personally hate remixing. It's very distasteful to the artistic music composer, and I'm sorry to say that many young people today do not want to understand the meaning or enjoyment of being an artistic music composer at all. Furthermore, I personally am more influenced by composers like Pierre Schaeffer, Ludwig van Beethoven, Bernard Herrmann and Karlheinz Stockhausen instead of young modern producers like Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Eric Prydz and Nicky Romero.

To be honest, these days I feel very, very sorry for the deceased Avicii because he wasn't the kind of boring commercial product I thought he was after all; he was instead a sensitive and fragile artistic soul who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight, and he was NOT made for the music business machine he found himself in. If I only understood his case much earlier before his unexpected death. My gratitude and respect goes to Avicii, a struggling artistic music-painter in the whole cut-throat music industry that finally did him in. It's all the music industry's fault.

This goes to prove that all too often many artistic musicians are being weighed down by the commercial of what sells and what's popular, and to me that is highly demoralising and downright demonising against the artistic musician. A true, quintessential artist should have the freedom and liberty to just create music, or any medium of art, that they personally love, and hopefully someone's going to like it.

That is all.
