Where did the notion that Renoise is "bad at mixing and mastering" come from?

May 9, 2019 - 05:26

@EETTEE wrote:

I always see this mentioned in forum posts, but I’ve never really understood it. The only non native mix/mastering plugins I use and Neutron and Ozone Elements from iZotope and when I started using Renoise my mixes were no better or worse than my Logic mixes.

Does it have any specific mixing weaknesses?

Rendering song - separate OUTPUTS are getting recorded

May 8, 2019 - 19:36

@The_Otter_Years wrote:

Hi,

I’m using Renoise to send out clock to my modular. I’m using an audio interface with 8 outputs. When I render my song, the outputs sending clock are getting rendered along with my master channel. I thought they would be treated as separate and not included. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

@joule wrote:

A small request about a detail: When entering multiple lines into column or track names, the GUI object seem to render the text vertically centered, meaning that the middle line is shown (if uneven amount of numbers) or two half lines are shown (if even amount of lines).

It would be nice if the top line was always rendered, making it possible to decide what is being presented to the user when the multiline “feature” is being exploited.

Controlling what's focused on

May 8, 2019 - 06:56

@Dry_Eyes wrote:

I want to post a little about controlling what part of the song the audience should focus on. Now, of course, you could say that control is bad. We don’t need control. Down with the controllers. BUT, when you want to lead the audience from one part of a song to another in a way that’s cohesive and doesn’t just sound like a mish-mash of sound, there are tricks.

I have to admit to using one that I’m putting up for consideration. Basically, you selectively drown out other tracks with whatever you’re trying to put the focus on.

Yes, you drown out the sound. It turns the background tracks into kind of an ambient wash. This is actually exclusively how I compose. Some tracks come in, and they sort of drown out other tracks. I don’t low-pass anything or hi-pass or bandpass anything, I just make sure what comes in sounds good and holds the attention, and let it drown out what’s not supposed to hold the atttention. Then when I silence certain tracks it causes other tracks to stand out, and so on.

I know that this could be considered a cheap trick, amateurish, but dammit I come from a DIY background originally and cheap production is the name of the game in genres influenced by that ethos. Not so much in electronic music though…

ALTHOUGH, when I compose I do tend to keep different octaves separate, like I don’t practice “close” harmony, I tend to put the harmonizing note on another octave. So there is that…

What do other producers think of this technique/idea?

Very Slow Loading Songs in x64 Renoise Windows 10 2019

May 8, 2019 - 05:39

@djnick wrote:

Hello

I see only similar posts from 10 years ago, so I decided to ask question:

  • I have latest Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 17763) with:
  • i7 (older processor, I think I’ve bought it 3 years ago, 6 cores,12 CPUs)
  • 32 GB Ram
  • VIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (with 8GB)
  • 4k system resolution
  • SSD disks
  • Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 usb connected sound-card (set all to 48 khz)
  • Latest Renoise (3.1.1) x64 and x32 version and all latest drivers…

… and - weird problem (that never happened before, on Win7 for example) and it is - SLOW SONG LOADING. Whatever song size I try to load, I have to wait over 40 seconds to Renoise “initialise” and then I will see fast loading samples and VSTs (in less than a second).

The same is with x32 version (but a bit faster) so I guess: Windows? Drivers? Something else?

Renoise (still) works fantastic, but slow loading is a bit annoying.

Here are snapshots of loading the same song on Renoise x64 and below is Renoise x32 version (4 times faster but still slow if compare with Windows7 and last years of work):

SlowRenoiseLoading-x64.jpg

SlowRenoiseLoading-x32.jpg

In Renoise icons long time ago I put “Run As Administrator” (I forgot what problems I had and why I put it, to be honest).

Btw, in Renoise settings device type is “ASIO” and device is set to “Focusrite USB ASIO” with samplerate “48000”

When open “ASIO control panel” I can see 48khz and buffer set to 1024 and Multi CPUs is set to 12, Limite to stereo in/out and Dithering are set to ON, Automatic PDC is set to on and CPU overload is set to 90%, 500ms…

I rarely use MIDI (lazy, mostly compose music on keyboard) and have ReWire bought (but used it few times)…

In Device Type I can only select ASIO while Direct Sound does not work (fails to reinitialise “Focusrite USB audio”)…

Any ideas?

Thanks

I set Copy to F1, Paste to F2, Cut to F3, and Undo to F4

May 8, 2019 - 04:49

@EETTEE wrote:

I haven’t actually worked with this setup yet (set it up a minute ago), but I don’t see the downsides.

I shifted all of the view functions over by 4 and they take up the rest of the function keys. Redo is now shift + F4. I might end up switching Undo and Redo (to “childproof” Undo) but I can’t tell which would be a worse misclick. Guess we’ll find out? Anybody else want to partake in this idiocy?

Replacement VST for BUS COMPRESSOR

May 8, 2019 - 00:24

@ffx wrote:

Hi,

I am looking for a replacement VST for the Renoise Bus Compressor. I like this device very much and would die for a VST version of it, but you can’t have everything you want.

So far I tried fabfilter, mcomp, ozone dyn 1 band, tb… It never sounds the same, the Renoise bcomp nicely also captures even early transients, maybe the attack curve is bent or so. I now found a replacement for the standard compressor, but the bus compressor works differently. I also tried to bend the release curve, still not the same.

Any experience or tips here?

Finally, I finished my first song. I’m not sure if it’s any good though.

The plan was to speak a poem (it’s German but language doesn’t matter here) and to add some electronic music. Quite surprisingly, it sounds more like a rock song in some parts but anyway. Here you go:

The zoom window image work correctly?

May 7, 2019 - 13:11

@Raul wrote:

It seems that the forums do not have the ability to click on an image uploaded or copied directly into the message so that it can be seen in a floating window with the full / actual size of the image.

Is it possible that something is malfunctioning that causes images not to be correctly deciphered?

For example:

  1. go to: New Tool (3.1.1): KangarooX120 v1.1 build 030
  2. right click of the mouse in the image and
  3. click in: open the image in a new tab.

The image will appear in a new window in full size… I think I saw the images appear in a black frame with the ability to zoom to see full size from the same tab.

Redux in FL Studio 20

May 6, 2019 - 07:15

@david77 wrote:

Hello everyone,

Has anyone got recording to work in FL Studio 20? I’ve been trying just about everything I can think of, but it seems like FL Studio just can’t detect the inputs.

I’d like to be able to record from a live input straight into Redux to be able to sample. Others have managed to get Redux in as an effect, but I’ve found that even when I try to use the Plugin Manager to switch it from a synth to an effect, it just changes it back to synth the second that I hit apply. Dragging it to the effects rack on the mixer just causes the DAW to add it as a generator rather than adding it to the effects chain.

I’m out of ideas, and it’s strange that others have found that FL Studio detects the inputs and immediately assumes it’s an effect. For me, it only ever detects it as a generator and refuses to let me use it as an effect, even in Patcher.

Those who got it to work on the Image Line forums used the demo to test it, but I find that the same thing happens with both the demo and the paid version.

Thank you!

MAGGGi (OneKnobMagic//Doofer)

My Girlfriend was checkin out my Doofer skillz and wanted to know what they do. She did like the Flattermann Wobbler & the Dirtydelay one but also said it was like they are way too complicated and kind of hard to figure out. It was the most complex Doofer for me until now - so I refused to show her the MAGiC happening inside the box She already loves this:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Here’s the latest track from my Vocal House/EDM collection.
It features @FarishaMusic, you can find her on Facebook, Instagram, SoundCloud, YouTube, Looperman.
The Acapella sample in this track is one of many superb ones that she has on the Looperman website.
The track was solely created in Renoise with a mixture of samples and VST’s.
If you do have a listen, then thank you… it’s always appreciated
