Twitch isn't having a good time with miedex

September 4, 2024 - 10:02

twitch has been plugging away at someone who noticed a few things but not getting anywhere fast, over time. the main problem we’re having here is a ‘tea drunk’ article posted, primarily, or received mainly by a communities.win patron known as casey content god. he spread the wonders of english tea stimulation around the html ceo circle and even helped get the message throughout the steam type game developers circumference of software businessmen. when they divert from me, who has endless stamina and can outwit several types of misdirection aimed at me, they will definitely think about making quick lunch of the rest of the visible audio-nerd communities which we can all name by memory even while in a terrifying bus crash.

Allow changing the Renoise Logo in Instrument Box

September 4, 2024 - 00:35
Renoise logo that can be changed

I try to hide the logos of the instruments and equipment I use by removing them or putting tape over them.
Otherwise, I can’t concentrate on my creations, and I get distracted by associating them with brands or corporate information. I don’t need to have the history of Steinberger’s founding in my mind when I am creating a song. Otherwise, if I don’t, I will have to think about the history of Sting or even Police, which used Steinberger.

For example, defining the Renoise logo in Instrument Selector or Lower Status Bar as a fixed file name such as logo_1.svg or logo_2.png in the configuration directory and I think it would be possible to do that by reading it out.
Then the user could customize the logo.
If you use the logo as a trademark for your team, you will feel more connected and important to Renoise and to yourself and your team…
Personally, I think that software does not necessarily have to display the logo.
If you want to know more about the software, you can refer to the “About” dialog, man command, --help, the README, the developer’s website, etc.
There is no need to explicitly recognize when you are creating music.

I know this is a very difficult subject, but I would be glad if you would consider it.

Save settings on Exit & Manually Saving Settings

September 2, 2024 - 15:42
Option: Save settings on exit

If Renoise crashes after making settings that are saved in Config.xml or KeyBindings.xml, the settings will be lost.
If you have multiple Renoise instances running, if you make important settings in Renoise instance A and then close Renoise instance B after closing Renoise instance A, those settings will be lost.
This is just an example, but I wondered if it could be solved by the following options.

  • Preferences: (checkbox) Save settings on exit
    • Default: Check
    • Uncheck the checkbox to not automatically save settings
  • Preferences: (button) Save Settings
  • Menu: File > Save Settings
  • Shortcut key: Save Settings
  • API: Save Settings

*“Save Settings” is an overwrite save to the settings file.

Renoise crash & fatal error with small buffer size when transposing down a sample in realtime in the sampler properties with beatsync time stretch texture mode activated

September 1, 2024 - 15:54

Description:

In the sampler window with a sample loaded : while playing and holding a note on the PC or midi keyboard and simultaneously transposing down the sample in Time Stretch Texture mode, Renoise crashes and closes after displaying the following error message:

Steps to reproduce look like this:

  1. Start Renoise with a buffer size < 128 samples. I’m using 96 samples in this example.
  2. Select the Sampler tab

  1. Load a sample preset from the library

  1. In the sample properties panel : activate the Beatsync option

  1. Select the Time Stretch Texture mode

  1. Play a note on the midi keyboard or computer keyboard and hold it

  2. While maintaining the note played, transpose the pitch down with the mouse beyond -29

  1. Renoise should crash & close after displaying the following error message :

  1. If not :change Beatsync mode to “repitch” and play a note

  2. And select back to “Texture mode” then play the note and vary down the transpose parameter again, trying reaching very low values beyond -29

Expected results:

it should be possible to transpose down the sample with the mouse in realtime while playing and holding the notes on the keyboard without Renoise suddenly crashing and closing with an error message.

Actual results:

Renoise crashes, stops playing any sound and displays an error message then closes.

I don’t reproduce this bug with buffer sizes > 96 samples or with other drivers like Directsound.

If you have difficulties reproducing, you really have to play with the different parameters, switching from pitch mode to texture mode, transposing, playing, holding and releasing the notes until Renoise crashes.

You will find the log file + a demo GIF attached to this message.

My Setup:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home (x64) Build 22631.4112 (23H2)

Motherboard: GIGABYTE B760M DS3H DDR4

CPU : Intel Core i5-13400F

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

RAM : 32GB (2x 16GB PC4-28700 DDR4 SDRAM Corsair)

SoundCard : RME Babyface Pro with drivers and Firmware up to date

Connected Midi devices : Midi Keyboard M-AUDIO Axiom 61 // AKAI APC Key 25 // BEHRINGER X-One Touch

Re-creating low-fidelity sounds from scratch?

September 1, 2024 - 07:00

I suspect the answer is “no”, but I’ll ask: does there exist some reliable technique to process an existing low-fidelity (as in 8-bit, often 22khz or less) sound sample into a higher-quality one that sounds as close to the original as possible, but with none of the nasty lo-fi artifacts? Alternately, does there exist software that can automatically do this?

Or perhaps is this a service that some (most?) professional sound engineers are capable of doing by hand – re-creating a sound from scratch on their own equipment as closely as possible to the “feel” of the original sound?

I ask because I have an absolute mountain of old unreleased tunes I made in FastTracker/ImpulseTracker/ModPlug circa 1998-2002 which I’ve been sitting on all these years. Most are crap, but a handful of them aren’t too bad, compositionally-speaking, and I’ve been pondering the idea of compiling the good ones, polishing them up in Renoise, and releasing them. It’s just that the sound quality of every individual instrument sample in these tunes is poor, so I’m brainstorming what to do about that.

(masking away the most high/low-end artifacts with filters only goes so far…)

More Sort Options in DiskBrowser

August 31, 2024 - 23:16
Disk Browser: Sort in reverse order

Currently, there is no reverse order when sorting by the following. It would be useful.

  • Name
  • Size
  • Date

Disk Browser: Sort Files → By Extension

Currently, when sorting by the following, the files are automatically sorted by extension.

  • Name
  • Size
  • Date
https://0x0.st/XvI7.mp4

When sorting by file name, it is not always necessary to sort by file extension at the same time.
It would be useful to have sort by extension as a separate option.

How do i reference / tie notifiers to a device that is within a doofer?

August 31, 2024 - 22:37

i need to hook up a notifier to a device inside a doofer.
this would be my workaround for naming the control i have.

meaning.

[doofer[*instr.automation]]

the doofer 8 macro knobs can be named → i’ll name them
i’ll automate the doofer 8 macro knobs, they will be auto-bound to the 8 instr automation parameters, which have notifiers routing the content to other places.

what i can’t figure out is … how to get from class AudioDevice - which can let me get to the Doofer, to “inside of Doofer”.

Specify the range of the automation display area

August 31, 2024 - 16:00
Specify the range of the automation display area

The current automation display area is the entire area that can be specified, so for example, if you are using only 80-180 in BPM, it is difficult to adjust BPM within the display area from 20-999.

https://0x0.st/Xvwh.mp4

It would be useful if this display area could be controlled.
I believe this could be made possible through the use of a UI, for example, a text box where minimum and maximum values could be entered.

Mystery volume/levels issues, maybe due to pipewire/jack?

August 31, 2024 - 02:40

I just upgraded to the latest Ubuntu (24.04.1) and did a fresh install, so I also reinstalled all my software, including Renoise. As part of the upgrade, the system now seems to be using pipewire for audio routing. There may be other updates to the Ubuntu Studio packages at issue here too.

My problem is intermittent: I open a song that was working perfectly fine, and it’s a crapshoot whether it will work or not. It seems like a levels issue, because when the song won’t play the meter at the top of the window is all the way at max and Renoise is probably clipping the sound. Adjusting the master volume doesn’t seem to fix it. My instrument 02 seems to be the issue–it’s a bass patch from Surge XT. When I test play a note on the keyboard, the levels for the track shoot up to clipping and stick, and all I hear is a click like unplugging a speaker jack. The levels stay there until I press a note in another track, and then the old track drops and the new track has a sticky, clipping note instead.

The mystery about it is that if I reopen the song, that might fix it, and the song and patch will play perfectly normally. Or it might not, and I might need to reopen it. It seems like there’s some kind of wacky thing going on with levels–previously I was getting very garbled playback, and it turned out the master volume was way up there and clipping constantly. Any ideas what might be going on? Why do these clipping levels keep sneaking back in? (I have saved the song with lower master volume level and auto level. Doesn’t solve it.) This was not an issue before the upgrade to the OS.

I know this might be a question for the Linux audio forum but I thought I’d try here first.

State of the tools page

August 30, 2024 - 22:29

When you go to Renoise Tools | Renoise and click Browse the complete Tool catalog

  • It defaults to Renoise 3.2
  • Renoise 3.4 doesn’t even exist in the dropdown
  • 3.3 is spammed up with multiple copies of … wordle (?)

These together make it look like tool development has stalled, only looking into the this forum reveals otherwise.

Rock Jacket - arcadessa

August 29, 2024 - 17:24

Rock Jacket is my side project, here’s a short cohesive little release.

https://rockjacket.bandcamp.com/album/arcadessa

‘pelimusa’ starts us off catchy and introduces the elements of the release - rapid drums with chiptune bleeps.

‘artefakti’ has some more musical exploration in the image of old arcade cabinets.

‘turbo’ revolves around distinguishable rhythmic patterns augmented with bass melodies.

‘vastus’, while having its own theme, features a medley of the other 3 tracks.

Instrument: Option for forcing VST-specific sampling rate

August 27, 2024 - 23:27

Once in a while I notice certain VSTs don’t account for the host software’s sampling rate, and calculate their oscillations/etc under a hard-coded assumption that the host software uses 44100hz – for example, older versions of ZynAddSubFX exhibited this problem. So if Renoise uses a different native sampling rate other than 44100hz, the VST produces off-key sounds.

For an individual Instrument which uses such VST plugins, an optional setting that would let the user select a forced VST-specific sampling rate, and then Renoise would natively upscale/downscale the outputted sound to transparently sound natural under Renoise’s native sampling rate, would be very helpful.
