Failed to initialize WASAPI device: Permission denied

September 17, 2024 - 10:01

Hello everyone. I’m struggling since a couple of days on an audio issue with Renoise latest version :

  1. I have reinstalled my laptop recently from scratch (Windows 10 Pro, latest version), reinstalled all my music software (renoise, mpc2, xmplay, vlc, standalone and vst plugins etc).

  2. All work okay with all that software, except Renoise that can’t open the audio device. When I start Renoise, or when I go to the Audio settings in renoise and try to select either DirectSound or Wasapi output, I get error messages such as this :

Renoise
Failed to initialize WASAPI device: Permission denied
WASAPI dailed to open. Trying to open DirectSound instead…
Failed to initalize audio buffers for device: ‘Primary Sound Device’. Audio is disabled. Please try to choose a different device or samplerate.

  1. When I use ASIO drivers (for example the MPC Asio, Zoom H5 Asio), I don’t have the issue and the audio works.

  2. All other audio software I have are able to open either the DirectSound or Wasapi outputs without complaining. Xmplay is able to precisely select the device and it works, for example.

  3. I followed the advice I found on the other posts in the forum that could be related, nothing changes. I uninstalled completely the

  4. The drivers and devices are based on a standard Realtek chip on the motherboard :

Device Manager / Audio inputs and outputs

  • Speakers (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
  • Microphone Array(Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
  • Headphones (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
  • Headset Microphone (Realtek High Definition audio(SST))
    Driver provider: Microsoft
    Driver date: 06.12.2019
    Driver version: 10.0.19041.1

Device Manager / Sound, video and game controllers

  • Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)
    Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp
    Driver date: 29.05.2020
    Driver version: 6.0.8958.4

I tried to Update those drivers, then Disable+Enable the devices, then Uninstall Device and Reboot (Windows reinstalled them at startup automatically), and finally Uninstall Driver too and rebooting (Windows reinstalled them at startup too).

  1. The samplerate is 48000Hz. I also tried to change the samplerate settings on Renoise without success.

  2. Finally, I completely uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled Renoise x64 3.4.4.

But the issue is still there (Permission Denied on. And I do not have those issues with any other software except Renoise.

Many thanky to everyone who could have a clue on why this is happening, and only with Renoise…

Best Regards from Switzerland,

Bruno

How to stop the knobs on MIDI keyboard from adjusting panning?

September 16, 2024 - 22:29

Hello, when I try to use the knobs on my MIDI keyboard to apply local effects in renoise, it properly sets the effects, but improperly changes panning, which causes the effect to not work. Even when setting effects unrelated to panning like Cxy and Dxx, it still adjusts the panning. Does anyone know how to get it to stop changing the panning??? Also the keyboard I am using is called midiplus minicontrol, in case that’s relevant.
I added an image of what happens when I try to set Cxy using my midi keyboard. The part circled is panning.

Windows: Renoise change your maximized size after auto off monitor

September 15, 2024 - 12:27

I have 3 image monitors:

  1. 3440x1440, 34" (main)
  2. 1920x1080, 24"
  3. 1920x1080, 14" tactile

Steps:

  1. I maximize Renoise on monitor 2.
  2. Windows automatically turns off the monitor after a few minutes according to its settings (screen saver).
  3. When automatically turning on the monitor by moving the mouse, the Renoise window size is not restored correctly with the maximized size of monitor 2.
  4. Maybe Renoise use in this case the size of monitor 1? The thing is that it appears with a much larger window size. It should retain the exact size after autoturn on the monitor.

In short, in these cases, it seems that Renoise does not handle the size of windows with different image monitors of different resolutions well. I think it probably happens with undocked windows (mixer/instrument) as well.

I think this issue is quite old…

To test these things you should have several image monitors with different resolutions and check what happens to the size of the Renoise windows, when turning monitors on/off, both manually and by auto-management, also testing pinned and unpinned windows…

Delayed sound issue

September 14, 2024 - 18:18

Currently I’m working on a song and I’m facing this behavior:

I can live with it, but nevertheless I wonder why it’s happening. As you can see the sound doesn’t start immediately after hitting play, instead it’s “shifted” by not less than 16 positions. “Picture and sound” don’t match. The CPU is at 46% according to Renoise while playing the song, so the CPU power is seemingly not the problem. So my question is: What could cause that delay of audible sound after hitting play?

Delete track DSP Automation/Envelopes with mouse click

September 14, 2024 - 16:37
Current behavior

To delete automation recorded on a track DSP, you must right-click to bring up a menu, or click to go to the Automation Editor window, right-click on the corresponding automation, and delete it.

https://0x0.st/Xxd2.mp4 Expected behavior

It would be useful to be able to remove automation using the following operation.

  • Alt+Click
    • Delete All Envelopes in Current Pattern
    • Delete All Pattern Commands in Current Pattern
  • Alt+Ctrl+Click
    • Delete All Envelopes in Song
    • Delete All Pattern Commands in Song
  • Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Click
    • Delete All Automation in Song

Please consider adding this feature.

Considering doing a cover of an old .mod file. It seems unlikely that I will be able to contact the original author for permission. Would it be bad to release it in an album?

September 14, 2024 - 11:20

There’s an old mod called “Klim’s Theme” that u4ia wrote in remembrance of a friend of his who died. I always remember listening to it and thinking “Wow, I wonder if I will lose a friend one day…”. Well, it’s finally happened.

I’m working on a 12 song album in dedication to her. 11 of the songs are original, but I had the idea to cover Klim’s Theme. I tried to dig around and see if I could find any contact information for u4ia, but I didn’t turn up much.

My cover wouldn’t include any samples or pattern data from the original song, just my own recreation/cover in a different style (most likely slower, with more of a synth lead instead of piano).

I can’t decide whether it would be ethically OK to include this in the album if I end up i.e. putting it on Spotify or something. I may end up just doing an “internal use” only version, and omitting it from any published album.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It’s not like I’m a big name artist, so honestly if I hadn’t mentioned it, I’m sure I could “get away with it” and nobody would ever notice or care. But, I do want to properly respect the art and intellectual property of other musicians.

Thanks for any input.

Difference between load_track_device_chain and load_track_device_preset?

September 14, 2024 - 07:35

hi, what is the difference between

renoise.app():load_track_device_chain(filename) -> [boolean] renoise.app():load_track_device_preset(filename) -> [boolean]

i have a .xrnt and it loads with device chain
i have a xrdp, and it doesn’t seem to load with device preset loader. what’s going on here?

also, this seems to be destructive! meaning, if there’s content on the trackdsp and you load a track device chain, it is not appended, instead overwritten.

Failed to start audio device

September 13, 2024 - 15:11

Hi
What ever audio device I select, I get this (screenshot) error message. It is the same for headphones, etc.

Changing device or samplerate does not make a difference.
It used to work with my plain standard notebook speakers ?!
What am I missing?

September 13, 2024 - 11:22

[API] Import of Keybindings.xml

September 13, 2024 - 03:49
Summary

This API allows Renoise to operate at the speed of thought.

While keyboard-centric operation is convenient in Renoise, the current challenge is that key bindings are quickly depleted due to assignments to numerous functions.
This can be solved by simply creating an API function that reads an arbitrary file path to Keybindings.xml as an argument.
It would be best if the XML in the Tools archive could be specified.

I posted a proposal for this function below, but I thought it was worth posting as a dedicated thread since it is a pretty game changer for what seems to be a relatively simple implementation.

The Api Wishlist Thread Renoise Tool Development Import of Keybindings.xml Importing Keybindings.xml is a standard feature. It would actually be very helpful if this could be done with the API. The only argument required might be the file path. [image] Renoise has a problem that the key operation system tends to be complex. For example, if it were possible to import Keybindings.xml by key bindings, it would be possible to change the key bindings set at the same time as switching to the pattern editor, mixer, sample editor, etc., like vim… How would this be useful?

It would allow for modal handling of the keyboard system, allowing for virtually unlimited key bindings.
For example z,x,c,v… Each of these keys can have its own key layer, and on top of each key layer, an infinite number of additional key layers can be created.

Example 1: Toggle keys on the piano keyboard layer

The F key can be assigned as an enable/disable toggle key on the piano keyboard.
This way, 37 keys from Z to = on ANSI keyboards and about 40 keys on ISO and JIS keyboards can be assigned to other functions.

Example 2: VIM mode

Modal key bindings in the form of vim are possible. Use h,j,k,l to move the cursor keys. Enter edit mode with i or a, use macro functions, etc. for quick editing, and return to normal mode with esc when you are done.
https://openvim.com/

request

You can’t immediately imagine how much more efficient this will make your work.
Of course, this is only if you properly implement Renoise Tools with this API, but it is very important to note that it is possible in principle.

Please consider implementing this API.

Individual Pattern - Not Phrase - Length & Tempo Adjustment

September 12, 2024 - 21:59

Have seen multiple forum requests for this, thought I’d toss my hat in the ring. For those of us who are looking to create different length patterns and loops within Renoise, this would be another stunning feature. Pattern adjustment would be ideal since we can then transport each pattern separately if we wanted ‘loops’.

For example, I use loops in my SP404. Renoise is a beautiful way to create very wonderful Max/MSP-sounding sines and other sounds without having to learn how to program. With pattern options that allow for different length/tempi, the regular export function wouldn’t need to change. We’d just have a bunch of different loops at their specific settings. Dump’em into your hardware or software and there 'ya go.

Out of the Box Most Common Arp Patterns?

September 12, 2024 - 21:49

Although there are some arp patterns that come default in the phrase editor, I still think it ought to have a more robust selection of usable phrases out-of-the-box the way most synths just come with that now.

I feel like there’s probably a set of 20+ most-commonly-used arp patterns in electronic music, and it’s not the same set as come in the phrase editor. I end up opening phrases and wasting time when what I really want is just a standard plug-and-play arp pattern to throw on a track.

Anybody interested in putting our heads together to think out what common arp rhythms would be most useful in there?

Redux error: no phrase

September 11, 2024 - 01:09

I just tried to open a song from 2015. All 4 instruments were Redux VST.

I have Redux installed and working. Maybe it was still in beta that time? I really hope I can repair this. I liked that one quite a lot.
Somebody got any ideas?

I really like the phrase he made start from 8:52 to 9:02.

Some repeater-plugin? Or just fancy midi in Renoise?
How would you make it?

Thanks for any tips, I’m new on this daw-concept

First Renoise song, lots of Surge XT

September 10, 2024 - 15:49

I know this song features Surge’s capabilities a lot more prominently than Renoise’s, but it would not have been possible without Renoise! Just found this software and I’m lovin it. Anyway, this is some humble hero worship of Miles Davis and Fela Kuti. Thank you to the Renoise community for making this possible.

EDIT: The percussion is built up from samples, mostly those included with Renoise. Every other instrument is a patch in Surge XT.

Copy all FX automation in whole song with dragging in Mixer

September 10, 2024 - 10:21

After 13 years in Renoise and a year break, I realized that when I drag an effect in the mixer interface to another track, it doesn’t copy the automations with it. It’s logical, but if Renoise (or some tool) could do that, it would make my job a lot easier.

Now I have to copy the effect, then in pattern matrix copy the pattern and paste it into a new track. Then only I can delete the effect in the original track.
