April 9, 2025 - 09:09

I was working on this track every day starting at 5 am up to 6 am. It took me a few days to finish this track.
I hope you can feel this atmosphere.
Of course this track has been made in Renoise + VST instruments like Acid, Serum 2, etc…

Scaler 3....runs good

April 9, 2025 - 01:32

Scaler 3 works wonderfully in RENOISE.

Keep in mind that they’re still ironing out bugs… but you can do some cool things.

Here’s a mini orchestral example…

Midi connection with Mpc One (mpc3)

April 8, 2025 - 21:03

Hello everyone, i was wondering if someone can help with connecting (if possible) the Mpc One (running on mpc3 software) with Renoise? I cant get it working properly … no 2 way connection. Renoise can see the audio engine from the Mpc One. Is there a way i can get this working properly?

Thank you all in advance

Dragged effect isn't auto-selected unlike when double-clicked

April 6, 2025 - 10:13

Is there a reason why not? I’m curious because I have a tool that respond to this selection so it would be nice with consistency. Maybe there’s some sort of workflow reason behind it?

New Tool (3.4) Paketti REX / PTI import (.REX, not .RX2) (PTI = Polyend Tracker Instrument)

April 4, 2025 - 20:50

hi, here are two import hooks.
One is for .REX - the legacy ReCycle format (no, not .RX2). We used to have this made by @mxb working on v2.8 - but it did not remove the headers before the slices, leading to manual work.

One is for .PTI - the Polyend Tracker Instrument format.

so Before:

And After:

You can download this tool in it’s current form from

renoise.com Paketti PTIREX | Renoise

Renoise is a digital audio workstation. It lets you compose, edit and record production-quality audio using a music tracker-based approach. It features a wide range of built-in audio processors, alongside support for all commonly used virtual...

These two Import hooks are also a part of Paketti ( Paketti | Renoise ), fully integrated into the mix.

v1.03
  1. Support for Loopmode detection (off, forward, reverse, pingpong)
  2. PTIBreaks are now opened properly, i.e. if a wavefile has 50% audio and 50% silence - then the audio is clipped to half, and slices recalculated to match the actual wavefile content.
  3. Wavetable support - will detect what the wavetable position + window is, assign 00-7F volume for that, and also extract every single other wavetable into the instrument, but muted (Keymapping 00 Velocity) + retains the original full-length sample too.

Sending audio to vsti plugins inside renoise - a solution

April 2, 2025 - 13:27

Since Renoise doesn’t share the functionality of many daws that can use audio inputs on various instrument plugins - such as Arturia’s Vocoder V - I’ve found a fairly simple workaround.

Element by Kushview. Available for free as a slightly older version, no strings, or get the new one and support further development as well. This is a vst/vsti that can route various signals, audio and midi, inside itself, and spit out the result. The design is quite simple, a node based screen, recognizable to many.

How it works:

You have a track with audio that you want vocoded. Could be vocals, drums, anything. As long as it’s audio, and in one track.

Add Element FX as a vst to the track and open the Element FX editor window.

On an empty area in the large node layout window on the right, right click and scroll down to either “vsti developer > vsti of choice” or “unverified > vst/vst3 > vsti of choice”.

For example’s sake, let’s say we’re adding Arturia’s Vocoder V.

Now create connections from the “audio in” node to the vocoder’s audio inputs, as well as from the “midi in” node to the vocoder’s midi input. Then create a connection from the vocoder’s audio outputs to the “audio out” node.

Open the editor for Vocoder V, to do this - right click the small vocoder node and select “display > embed”… you may need to adjust the window size of Element FX before you do this to see all of the interface properly.

Select a preset and set it to “voice” instead of “sample”. Close out of Element FX.

In the instrument section top right add a new instrument set to the vst/vst3 alias of your Element FX instance.
This is now your midi controlling instrument for the vocoder.

Then the setup is done… track some notes (in any channel) with the alias instrument, hit play, and you should hear the vocoder using your notes vocoding your audio from the channel Element FX is active on.

You don’t need to set any midi channels, the alias will automatically be controlling the vsti instance inside with the “all channels” setting. That being said you could probably cc most of the settings in the vocoder the regular renoise way, haven’t tried it…

GLHF!

Strange behavior when looping midi back into renoise

April 2, 2025 - 04:39

I’ve encountered some strange behavior I don’t understand. I’m unsure if it’s a bug, or if I’m missing some subtlety about midi routing.
I’d like to control multiple instruments using a single midi track. To do this, I first set up an empty instrument, and set the output to a virtual midi port, like this:

I then set up target instruments to listen to a connected input port, like this:

The midi sent to the first instrument controls the second instrument, as expected. The oddity begins when i start playing.
In the below screenshot, I’ve positioned my cursor at the top of a blank pattern, and pressed “z” to insert a single c3 note. The c3 shows up as expected. However, a mysterious second note, an octave lower, also shows up, routed to the target instrument!

Now, I understand why a note shows up for the target instrument - from renoise’s perspective, I’ve just input a midi note via an external controller, and it’s dutifully recording it. An expected oddity. But why is it an octave lower? I’ve checked the midi monitor and confirmed that C-3 is received by the target instrument, however, I can also see the source instrument triggering both C-3 AND C-2 on the graphical keyboad, despite it not showing up in either the input or output midi log. When triggered this way, the target instrument will always play the note an octave lower, and never play the original note at all.
Midi Loopback is a pretty weird edge case so I’m not 100% convinced there’s a bug at play here. If anyone wants to try to reproduce this or if you have any input at all on how to work around it, i’d appreciate it.
Thanks!

EDIT: sorry the image previews don’t appear to be working, but if you click through you will see screenshots. I"ve tested this in both mac and linux, same behavior.

EDIT 2: The spurious note is not always an octave lower, it’s fairly inconsistent. Sometimes it’s two octaves lower, sometimes one.

EDIT 3: Another interesting observation: If I open two instances of renoise, and route midi from one instance to another via virtual port, The note will be wrong. Inconsistently, it will be the wrong octave. I triple checked to make sure the virtual input wasn’t set as master clock or as master keyboard.
Routing midi from Reaper to renoise doesn’t do this, the note is correct. I haven’t tried this using hardware midi ports yet. Here’s a screenshot. You can see the correct midi data being sent and received, and the wrong note triggered on the vitual keyboard below.

EDIT 4: I found another thread talking about how renoise treats octaves differently from many other DAWS, but I don’t believe that’s the issue here. Setting an octave offset does not work - the offset is not consistent and will change as a sequence plays.

Mid/side send device

March 31, 2025 - 21:47

Just as there is a multiband send, I thought it might be a cool idea to have a M/S send…where you can, for instance only send the sides to one channel.

This was just a random idea that popped up and figured it was worth dumping here.

Stop processing when vst is not being used

March 28, 2025 - 13:19

I think I may have brought this up before but renoise does not remember to stop processing plugins when not being used sometimes.I come across this quite often. When ticked it will behave as normal but if I reopen the file, renoise does not remember the settings,so upon opening the CPU spikes to high levels.Lots of plugins this seems to happen but the two that affects me most personally is,Replika xt and 3d expanse both Vst3.

Pitch bend limitations

March 27, 2025 - 22:56

Apologies in advance if it’s been discussed plenty before, but I couldn’t find any definitive answers to my questions upon looking around.

I’m currently writing a conversion tool for a sequence format similar to standard MIDI and an accompanying proprietary instrument-format. My goal is to convert the original songs to XRNS files. However, I’ve stumbled upon a couple of hurdles in the process. Namely, the original format, from early 2000s, appears to be more flexible in a couple regards related to pitch bending:

  1. An instrument can have more than one active pitch via pitch-bend (track-specific)
  2. The maximum pitch (bend) range is -/+127.0 semitones

Whereas, in Renoise, it appears that pitch bends (at least “M1” pitch-bends) are applied to all tracks that use the same instrument. And the maximum pitch bend range is 96.0 semitones.

Is there any good approach to get around these limitations in Renoise? I have thought of a couple of ideas so far, but find them somewhat cumbersome and perhaps not optimal:

Possible solution for issue #1: Make a separate copy of each instrument for each track. Drawbacks with this is that it adds to the XRNS filesize, adds clutter, and complicates the conversion process (instrument numbers/indexes would have to be changed in a lot of places, as well as respective modulation sets, etc.).

Possible solution for issue #2: Since it appears that there is never actually any pitch-bend command in the original files that goes above 96.0 semitones, this can probably be solved with a range conversion formula. Two songs do use a pitch-bend range of 127.0 though, so a potential drawback here is that it might not be a fully lossless conversion in these cases.

A few minor bugs found

March 27, 2025 - 18:21

Renoise 3.4x, Windows 10x, ASIO mode (NI Komplete audio 6 interface). Dual monitor, one vertical the other horizontal.

  1. ASIO, first minor issue. Almost every start up of ReNoise the NI driver complains of not being able to initialize. Reinitiating after reselection of ASIO type fixes this almost always.

  2. Vertical monitor, if I leave ReNoise up and come back after say power management turns off monitors, the 2nd screen on the vertical monitor become unclickable, until reseting layout presets.

While these 2 are not major bugs they can be annoying mostly.

I just wanted to report these 2, with the new version up coming just in case

2a) One other annoyance is if say you want to keep SPAN up if it is then trying to use something like enter to disable any other fx (even vsts) this won’t work until you close SPAN, for example. Keeping this up can be useful & prevent the annoyance of having to close external plugins displaying before you can disable it or others.

Additionally, I would really like a bit more window control than just the few popuot options. Ideally I would like the main pattern sequencer on the vertical monitor for obvious reasons for pattern input and horizontal screen for mixing/sample areas. Since both seem intuitive in such aspects.

Lastly I have lost some unsaved work due to crashes that I had just started on for instance. I try to save as much as possible & even have 2 backups option enabled. However there has been times that I would of thought reloading Renoise would of caught the exception & saved the song before or after the crash. It has caught this a few times but hasn’t always been the case.

Overall, I am a long time ReNoise user & advocate. Looking forward to the next release. These bugs mentioned are hardly show stoppers!

Cheers ReNoise team & users.

Can't write efx in the efx column

March 25, 2025 - 15:59

Hi there, so I recently switched from Mac to Windows. When I go to write an efx command (say for instance D70 for pitch down) I cant actually move the cursor into the second column to put the letter there. I can only put letters in the first column, which just says unknown effect. Please advise, thanks
