Midi channel selection per note column of track

April 24, 2025 - 17:39

Hi all, I am writing metal in renoise and one of the things I would like to see:

As you can see, I have 8 note columns for the guitar, keyswitch, string and then the 6 individual strings.

The VST I use (The Odin III) has a feature where a string can be selected by outputting notes on a certain channel:

It would be a very nice to have to be able to set the midi channel for a certain column inside a track.
(And yes, I realize I am likely the only person on the planet that needs it, so unlikely to happen, but I did want to at least put the idea out )

(Linux) Renoise extremely choppy after installing Linut Mint 22.1

April 23, 2025 - 18:17

I never had this problem with Renoise at all in Linux Mint 21.3 and prior.

But doing a clean install of 22.1 (not an “upgrade” from 21.3, but completely nuking the drives and installing from scratch)… Renoise now behaves in a completely unusable way. While it “plays” the songs, the audio is very choppy/skippy, and certain graphical elements such as the phase-view box animate like slideshows.

The flavor of Mint I installed was 22.1 Cinnamon edition.

Any ideas what might be going on?

Edit: an additional detail that might be useful is that when turning on the Metronome for a default blank song, it doesn’t sound 100% evenly-spaced like it ought to.

I used the Space Piano sample from renoise, and also added violin to it

April 22, 2025 - 23:24

Dear people

I am working on a piano number, I used the Space Piano sample from renoise, and also added violin to it, I don’t really know much about usable samples. Most of the ones that are available have already been played as a melody, I also see a lot of samples on the internet as junk, you can not use the notes abcdefgab to get a good melody that runs with the piano.
Does anyone know a solution or explanation for this. I would like to have the same sample as space piano but also in violin, if anyone knows something I would like to hear it, kindly consider

Missing warning for long sample recordings

April 22, 2025 - 01:45

Hi,

I just wanted to make a longer recording with the loopback function of my sound card (Focusrite 2i2 4th Gen).

After about 4 hours of recording without an error message, I stopped the recording (clicked on “Stop” and “Done”). The waveform that was subsequently displayed in the sample editor was only 46 minutes and 36 seconds long. The temporary file %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\Renoise-0-17240\Renoise_TmpPath-0-0\TempSampleRef1.wav was about 5 GB in size.

Maybe it has something to do with size limitations of WAV files, but it would be helpful if the maximum recording duration was displayed before recording or a warning message could be displayed as soon as the maximum is reached. Alternatively, perhaps the temporary WAV file could be distributed over several temporary files once the maximum size has been reached, so that longer recording times would be possible?

Best regards

Tool idea: Professor Dubler

April 21, 2025 - 11:08

Hi everyone!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on an idea for a simple tool designed to help musicians get past creative blocks while working on a track.

The idea isn’t to generate something from scratch, but to build on what’s already there — like one or two notes, a short phrase, or a pattern.

Think of it as a kind of creative support tool — it takes existing material and offers possible continuations based on simple, intuitive transformations: repeat, transpose, shift rhythm, insert a pause, and so on. Nothing overly complex — just enough to help get the flow going again.

What I’d love to hear from you is: what kinds of transformations or logic would you find useful in this kind of tool? What would help you personally when you’re stuck?

At the moment I am collecting information to formulate the technical task and how it could be implemented. I would be glad to hear any thoughts, even strange ones.

Have a great day!

Renoise Crash: GUI Thread Exception

April 20, 2025 - 02:09

Renoise 3.4.4, Windows 10 64-bit.

I have been getting frequent crashes with both Redux and Renoise in the past year or two. Usually they just close instantly without any error messages in the GUI or log file, but this one provided an error message and crash backup file.

It occurred as I pressed Ctrl+S to save the project. I took a screenshot to show the state of Renoise when the crash happened. SPAN was the only VST loaded and its GUI was not open.

Here is the log file:
Log.txt (1.4 MB)

Here is a link to the crash backup XRNS:

drive.google.com 250419 gTarPadShop_4_19_2025__18_40_crash.xrns

Google Drive file.

My system specs:

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 19045) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406) Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz Memory: 8192MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 12 User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DirectX Database Version: 1.0.8 Graphics: Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 Display Memory: 2160 MB Dedicated Memory: 112 MB Shared Memory: 2048 MB Current Mode: 1366 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)

PS: A crash that I reported previously has some similarities to this one. They both have a GUI Exception and this crash also involves note-off layers (used in instrument 00):

Sampler note-off layer crash Help, Support & Bugs In the “Samples” area of the Sampler (with the “Samples” area in focus/selected): Renoise crashes when I attempt to paste samples into a “note-off layer” or “note-on layer”. GUI effects and animations

April 19, 2025 - 18:07

I always wondered what exactly GUI effects is doing when being enabled. I don’t see any difference with GUI effects being turned on or off:

from the manual:

GUI effects & animations: When enabled, animations will be used in some parts of the interface, e.g. smooth scrolling, fading of menus, transparency etc. Disable this option if you dislike them or are using a very slow computer.

Maybe it does not work on Linux?

Cubase noobidoob questions

April 19, 2025 - 10:16

Hello, I am trying Cubase a bit… But there are questions. Last time I used Cubase was with SX2 or so, maybe 10+ years ago?

Some (also annoying) stuff seems to be still the same, but I wonder if there are new features, also I completely forgot how to properly configure Cubase.

So I have a bunch of questions, maybe you know how to solve these?

  1. I would like the position cursor to jump back to the position where I started, once I am stopping playback. So far I only found some wonky solution, pressing 0 of the numpad… Doesn’t work properly though.
  2. Is there a way to make the midi clips in the arranger a bit transparent, so I can actually see the gridlines though it?
  3. So weird, there does not seem to be any pinch-to-zoom support. This just feels completely wrong, but is there maybe a hidden-in-the-menus way?
  4. Any idea how to export projects so the will properly load in Studio One?
  5. Can I somehow non-destructively transpose whole tracks? I remember this was possible back in the days…
  6. Can I set the pianoroll to auto-perfectly-zoom-in the selected midi-clip? Or even better, show four bars always or so.
  7. How do I macos-fullscreen Cubase, so it will be opened on a second virtual desktop?

So far I don’t really get why somebody should use Cubase over Studio One… Maybe it’s the MIDI part of Cubase?

The onboard channel dsp though sounds quite good, and quickly leads to good-enough results.

Thanks for any insights.

Reason for empty space on the pattern editor

Combined mode, filled+curve for analyzer + visuality improvements

April 18, 2025 - 08:32

Simply an additional mode in which the back layer in the analyzer is filled, but the the front layer only is curve/outline drawn. I think this would quite a lot improve readability. The front layer however sould be drawn more fatty, and maybe be red always?

I don’t think colors of the tracks / the rainbow make a lot of sense in outline drawing mode at all… Especially when using retina / hidpi, it is then often barely visible at all.

So an option “fatten and redden the outline mode”, too.

What about a “monochromic” drawing in this combined mode, background layer is filled with track color, and the front layer is invert-masked on top, so black on the background layer, but the same color on black? And then quite fat?

btw. happy Easter!

Interface Optimization Ideas for Renoise – Towards a More Intuitive and Efficient Workflow

April 17, 2025 - 11:14

Hey Folks!

I’m creating this thread as a living collection of ideas and suggestions aimed at improving the Renoise interface. Over years of use, I’ve developed certain workflows, as well as run into recurring friction points that often require workarounds or extra attention.

The focus here isn’t on radical redesigns, but rather on targeted enhancements that could make the interface clearer, faster, and more comfortable — without compromising the tracker philosophy.

I’ll be posting thoughts and mockups as they come. Anyone is welcome to join in — feel free to share your own observations or expand on the ideas below.

my first 5 cent

  1. Optimized Effect/Processor Selection

The idea is to streamline the effect/processor selection interface: more compact, visually clear, and faster to use.

  1. Combined Automation + Oscilloscope View

This concept integrates the automation editor with an oscilloscope — something I have wished for in Renoise for a long time.

The goal is to visually align automation changes with the actual waveform , in real-time.

This would be especially useful for working with short percussive elements, filter modulations, or any parameter-sensitive material — allowing for more accurate keyframe placement and easier fine-tuning of behavior.

It bridges the gap between what we “draw” and what we “hear”, making sound shaping more precise and intuitive.

any things!? ))

Sonic Charge Microtonic VST3: Some parameters are sometimes missing in *Instrument Automation Device

April 17, 2025 - 09:46

Greetings!

I found a strange bug with the VST3 version of the plugin when trying to bind parameters in the new version of the Instrument Automation plugin. Some parameters of the first MIDI channel of the microtonic are missing from the list. In other versions, everything works fine. I also checked in Bitwig, maybe this is a plugin error, but everything is fine there.

UPD
I tried with the same settings in bitwig, there is also such a problem. Probably it is a microtonic error
