How do you rearrange the pattern matrix so you don't lose ideas you like?

Renoise Forum - November 9, 2024 - 18:56

Ok, here’s the scenario:

I often have songs where I like two or three ideas, but I don’t necessarily want to use them - I want to shelve them, but keep them in the arrangement, as they’re good ideas but perhaps not the best ideas. Maybe even they could be used in a remix or a different song.

For example, song 1 has a sequence of 1 - 30. I’m not sure if 10-30 is working, but I like the ideas. So I want the ideas to still exist in the arrangement, but I’ll create an alternative arrangement in 31 - 41 - then I want to be able to render the two different arrangements and get some feedback from others, or just listen in full for myself and decide.

A ‘skip to pattern xx’ command would have made perfect sense to me, but I’m aware this doesn’t exist.

The problem with the pattern matrix in this instance is you have to literally copy and paste and move the sequences around - move your original 10-30 down, move the alternative into its slot, then render the sequence (1-30), and then move it all back. It’s a bit of a laborious option and requires you to make notes so when you come to the song some time later you can remember what was going on.

I feel like I’m missing something on the pattern matrix, but I’ve done some research and can’t seem to find what I’m looking for.

Any tips?

Renoise DAW sync

Renoise Forum - November 9, 2024 - 18:27

Anyone have experiencing syncing Renoise w/ their main DAW? I use Cubase which dropped ReWire sometime back. But apparently you can syn applications w/ a virtual midi cable. Any resources I can look at for this?

I found this thread from 2008, does a setup like this still hold true:

Howto: Use Cubase And Renoise Together Tips & Tricks Hi Everybody. This is my first attempt of helping fellow Renoise users so I hope you all find it useful. I apologise if my use of jargon isn’t 100% but hey… Purpose: The purpose of this tutorial is to allow Cubase users to compose VST tracks using Renoise. Before you start you will need the following: Cubase SX - thats what I used Renoise 1.9.1 is what I have at the moment Midi Yoke (get this from http://www.midiox.com/)) If you manage to follow my tutorial successfully, you’ll be able to c…

Thanks y’all

What would you want AI to do in Renoise?

Renoise Forum - November 7, 2024 - 22:18

Generative AI is showing up in all kinds of apps now, how would you like to see it appear in Renoise?

I can see it adding value in the sample editor, suggesting precise chop locations, suggesting waveform tweaks, auto-normalizing and tuning samples, maybe suggesting automation options?

I can also see it generating patterns or phrases with interesting variations on rhythm, suggesting chord progressions.

I always struggle with the actual recording process itself, getting a good take at the right volume without clipping. I wonder if an AI could just be a general “soundgoodizer” to ensure you get optimal levels and sound quality at the recording stage?

I have also been using AI to teach me Lua while analyzing Renoise Tools, having it scan through existing plugin files and telling me what everything does and teaching me in plain english how I might extend the tool to make it do what I want.

IDK – what do you think? What would you want it to do?

Simple tool for changing tracks and sending a sysex message

Renoise Forum - November 7, 2024 - 21:26

hi everyone, I’m new to Renoise, and have very little (if any coding skills).

I’m trying to create a very simple tool to integrate my synth with Renoise. It would do the following:

If i press a key on the Numpad (let’s say 5) it switches to instrument 5. then it also switches to Track number 5, then sends a sysex message through the MIDI port, telling my Virus synth to switch to instrument patch Number 5.

I already managed to create a minimal synth definition with Guru that does switch between instrument patches on the Virus via a slider or a dropdown menu, and found theMatch instrument to Track name tool but then I got of stuck and figured I better write a tool that does just that.

I can probably painfully frankenstein those few lines of code, but if anyone could help me, it would save me from hours of trial and error:)

How to change selected automation parameter

Renoise Forum - November 6, 2024 - 21:55

so i tried this

>>> renoise.song().selected_automation_parameter=2

and got this

*** std::logic_error: 'passed argument is not a device parameter object'

what’s the correct method of identifying the device parameter object, please?

i need to quickly switch between any automated parameter in selected track.
because.

-- Selected parameter in the automation editor. Can be nil. -- When setting a new parameter, parameter must be automateable and -- must be one of the currently selected track device chain. renoise.song().selected_automation_parameter, _observable -> [renoise.DeviceParameter object or nil]

i don’t understand what this is or how i can give it a deviceparameter object. or what a deviceparameter object is.

MIDI master keyboard setting

Renoise Forum - November 6, 2024 - 07:42

In MIDI preferences you can set up to four devices as the “master keyboard”. What does this setting actually do?

In the manual it only says: " MIDI Master Keyboard / Mapping: Connect your external MIDI master keyboard or MIDI controller to Renoise".

What does it mean if I have all A, B, C, and D devices set as master keyboards?

Native Instruments Razor

Renoise Forum - November 5, 2024 - 01:10

Thinking of using additive synthesis to get some new & different sounds into my tracks and Razor seems to be the most accessible.

Slightly put off by how old it is, but I guess that Reaktor is pretty rock solid as it’s been around forever

Anyone using this synth?

What do you miss from other trackers?

Renoise Forum - November 4, 2024 - 19:52

Hi, there seem to be a bunch of people coming in from MadTracker, ModPlugTracker, OctaMED etc.

But, what is it that you specifically miss from your other, non-Renoise trackers, in Renoise? I’d be interested in detailed descriptions of what you miss, as I’m observing features from ImpulseTracker, OctaMED, ModPlugTracker, MadTracker, PollyTracker/JohnPlayer/Quantum SoundTracker and PlayerPro and trying to make ported versions of these features.

But I don’t know all the trackers in the world. What are your power moves from other trackers, I’d be really interested in finding out.

Do you use videos for your tracks on YouTube?

Renoise Forum - November 4, 2024 - 18:54

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask about the release of your tracks:
What platforms do you generally release your music on?

How important is Youtube to you?
Do you use your own videos for your music on YouTube?
Do you just use pictures?
Would suitable animations for your tracks be interesting?
Do you think animations and fancy thumbnails would help to increase your reach?

Personally, I’m planning to create my own animations and have already animated a few things because I believe that this has a positive effect on the music and the reach, be it YouTube, Instagram or TikTok.

Now I wanted to ask you, what do you think?
How do you add visuals to your tracks or covers?

Instrument comb filter does not work with short impulse , no tone

Renoise Forum - November 4, 2024 - 18:36

For some reason , the combfilter in the instrument section does not work when the sample is a short implulse ( example 336 samples ) set to non looping , the combfilter is set to 100 feedback .
It seems that processing of the actual filter is dependent on sample size , thus only 336 samples long , hence why there is no steady tone

When using the combfilter as an effect it does work with short impulses

R doesn't see my midi keys after update

Renoise Forum - November 3, 2024 - 11:07

Hello,

Updated from 2.2 to the latest version today and my M-Audio keyboard ceased to be visible by Renoise.
Any tips in such a situation?
I think maybe delete preference files but no idea where they are? I installed in a new directory anyway but maybe some dll is not overwritten?

Win10, Ryzen 5600 / 32GB RAM, Realtek sound card.

Thanx

Universal Cleaner - Gigapixels + Microplastics (17min ep)

Renoise Forum - November 3, 2024 - 10:47

Hello, I realised an EP on halloween, 17 minutes of sci-fi horror IDM breaks.

For fans of Aphex twin, Venetian Snares, Skinny puppy.

Made entirely in Renoise of course. I have been using it for about 2 years now and still learning its secrets. Easily the most unusual and most powerful music making program I have experienced.

Thanks for listening!

Manually MIDI map without MIDI controller

Renoise Forum - November 2, 2024 - 13:28

Instead of turning a knob on a controller I want to manually select a MIDI CC and a channel to modulate a parameter inside Renoise. Is this possible?
The reason is: I want to control parameters by a midi input from another program. But it’s not easy (or not possible) to send just one midi signal that i want to the “learn mode” in Renoise

Plugin ignores note starts and note-off

Renoise Forum - November 1, 2024 - 22:40

The plugin (Microtonic multi-out) starts with the spacebar and stops with the spacebar. It doesn’t care about waiting for the first pattern / note or stop with a note-off.
What am I missing?
