Best oscilloscope plugin, PsyScope Pro? (Windows only)
Just discovered this awesome multi-track oscilloscope plugin that I must share with you people. If you love diving into your waveforms you should take a look at this plugin, just insert it on the tracks you want to appear in the oscilloscope and work its magic.
There’s also a free version but I couldn’t get it set up properly in Renoise as I think you have to send sidechain to specific sidechain inputs of the plugin which I don’t think is possible in Renoise.
Do you know other oscilloscope plugins this good?

I did spread the word ;)
An article I wrote about the Renoise 3.4 release was published on the German site amazona.de!

Wishes for next releases
I know, I know, it is a bit early Please don’t get me wrong, very happy with 3.4, a real improvement for macos users. Thanks for that!
Lately though there came up some new ideas for improving Renoise:
- Sidechain having a color slider, just like in the convolver. This color slider of the convolver is very useful and the filters are just designed right IMO. So then you could attenuate your sidechain trigger signal. Middle should be 100% neutral, identical.
- A sidechain receiver device, as replacement for the MRatio workaround
- Note-off velocity support
- Dry/wet for all compressors
- Play/stop for Ableton link
And the usual suspects:
- Parallel container dsp device, also capable of mid/side, left/right splitting, including a sidechain-in
- Parallel VSTi instruments within the instrument section, so a system for passing note data thru the chains? Maybe there is an easier way, circumventing dsp lanes for midi…
- Routing a single track to multiple VSTis (might be solved with above point)
- 16 macros instead only 8
- dsp-really-disabled-mode (no pdc), maybe a different color of the checkbox, inverted or whatever
- Sidechain input for doofer
- Making quantize more nice in the advanced panel or some extra stuff here. Nice would be some kind of live preview
- macos: Support for appnap?, saving gpu load (read here)
LUA:
- Better drawing API for primitives
- Better mouse support, click on coordinate, on-click events with get-clicked-gui-element, dragging, etc. Maybe even dragging into GUI?
- Check for undo operations and/or vst_parameter.is_bubbling true/false or similar (topic here)
- Find_next_instrument_in_track() without changing the current track, moving the song position etc. Must be faast.
- Support for luarocks or similar. E.g. using sqlite.
- Real support for external dev tools, a.k.a. auto reloading on external save within the tool dir (e.g. using system’s directory watchers?). Maybe optional as a setting. Or even auto launching VSCode within the lua dir.
Please continue with your well thought ideas…

MacOS: Softube VST3 editor windows don't re-appear after closing
Running MacOS 12.3 and Renoise 3.4 on an Intel MBP.
I can open the editor window for a Softube VST3 effect once, but after I close the window, I can no longer re-open the editor window for that instance of the plug-in. Clicking the editor window button does nothing. If I remove and re-add the plug-in, the editor window again appears only the first time it’s opened.
Last week, Softube released a sweeping update to their plug-ins to add Metal and M1 support, so the problem might be related to their changes. The VST2 versions of the plug-ins behave correctly.
Here’s Renoise.log when I insert an instance of Softube Tape. After I opened the editor window and closed it, I clicked the “Ext. Editor” button a few more times, and the window did not appear.
Vst3Plugs: Instantiating: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Tape.vst3…

One-shot samples in main window
Another beginners question
Is it possible to trigger sliced loops (slices) as one-shot in the main pattern window? I know it can be done in the phrase editor, but it could be handy in the main pattern windows also.

Track comment device (mockup)
Hi, I have a feeling this have been suggested before, or maybe it was a tool of some sort back in the day… could not find it now. Anyway - I’d really love to have a (native, preferrably) device like this:
Yay?
EDIT: And I guess there would be no need for an enable/disable switch like in the mockup of course

Ableton Link transport sync problem
When attempting to Link Renoise and Pro Tools over the local network the link is recognized by both but the Renoise transport doesn’t engage when I engage the Pro Tools transport. If I engage the Renoise transport first the expected Link induced countoff happens but Pro Tools doesn’t budge.
I tried Renoise on a third computer in the network as a test and got the same result.
Investigating further, I opened Bitwig on one of the machines. Two Links appear in each of the three DAWs and Bitwig and Pro Tools engage with each other as expected, transports synced, but Renoise does not engage.
I feel like I’m probably missing a simple setting in Renoise? Any help is greatly appreciated!

macOS: Reason Rack Plugin interface unresponsive without Enable Keyboard
Hi,
Did anyone have this issue and find solution for this? RR plugin interface is not clickable with Enable Keyboard unchecked. Otherwise keyboard notes input doesn’t work.
This turns out to be quite annoying being unable use my computer keyboard and tweak Reason devices’ knobs simultaneously. Using macOS.
I’m trying to avoid using any additional midi gear/keyboards.
Cheers

FX Chain Stepper from LFO
Tonight I will bring you an effects device chain meta modulation stepper patch, working with the custom graphical LFO points! It was a real fun little hack to do, and I think some people here might be happy about it, because I have seen such a feature requested now and then!
It works quite well to my understanding so far. Just when you trigger multiple notes at the same time, it will only advance one step…unlike the modulation stepper it only works monophonic. Also when the song speed and tickrate are very low, for each note played there can be a short delay until it will register a new note and step on.
How to use it?
To work with it, drag & drop the preset file into an effect chain, or right click the effect chain and select “Device Chain”->“Load…” and select the “fxstepper.xrnt” file. Take care, loading the preset will overwrite any existing FX chain in that track, so if you do not want to replace, you might want to create a new track/device chain for it, load the patch into it, and then you can drag&drop the devices around to where it suits you.
Then when you got it ready, the first thing you might want to do is to choose an instrument/sample for the “Velocity Tracker” device. This instrument/sample will trigger the stepper on every note played.
The next thing you might want to do, is to edit some values in the code field of the “Step Formula” device. The following values can be edited to have effect on the action:
- “ntaps” should exactly match the number of points of the “Step Table” LFO device for the hack to work properly. (Due to a bug max 256 values)
- “step” is the number of steps skipped in the table for each note played. It can be a positive value, or a negative value. It can even be a fractional value, for example “0.5” will skip a line every 2 notes. If you set it to zero “0”, the stepper will choose a random point for each note played.
- “start” will set the starting point that the stepper selects when it is loaded and when a reset is triggered. It can be a fractional number as well.
The next thing you might want to do is edit the LFO “Step Table”. As said, it should be set to have the same number of points as selected in the formula device. Then you can just enter the data points, and you can also use the “Ext. Editor” functionality in all it’s glory to fine tune your data points.
Then you will want to set up the “Mod Targets” Hydra device, linking it to the effect parameters that you want the stepper to modulate.
Lastly, the “Step Formula” device has a first parameter called “RESET”. This will automatically return to zero when you change it. However whenever you set it to a nonzero value somehow, for example by moving it, or by right clicking it to write a value to the pattern FX column or to point automation, at that point the Stepper will reset to the position declared with the “start” parameter, so you can sequence repetitive modulations.
So that is all about it so far I think. I hope you people have some fun with it. If you find anything quirky about it, have ideas on how to improve, want to give some feedback etc, feel free to write here, I can try to fix it.
But please keep in mind that it is a pretty freaky hack, and not everything will be possible to fix for me. Shouts out to @slujr for suggesting this hack to be done.
Download the patch:
(EDIT: V1.1 makes start wrap around so you can use negative numbers to count from the right side)

New tool: Chord progression tool
Here is a tool to generate chord progressions out of some random chords.
It is a way to kick-start a new track when out of ideas. Or… That was the idea when creating it
Renoise is a digital audio workstation. It lets you compose, edit and record production-quality audio using a music tracker-based approach. It features a wide range of built-in audio processors, alongside support for all commonly used virtual...
Since it’s my first tool, and also my first encounter with LUA, it probably has more bugs than lines of code. It do work on my computer though, of course.
It writes to the current pattern. Screenshot of gui below:
More info on the tool page.

Stepper-like behavior with meta devices in FX chains?
Hey all, looking for an assist here…
I’d like to be able to emulate the stepper modulation device’s behavior in the instrument or track fx section using currently available native meta devices. I’ve been able to achieve some stepwise motion using a couple of different approaches…
First, using an odd combo of a key tracker, hydra, and lfo and some destination splitting and feedback, but the movement was not regular, and the desired looping behavior wasn’t achieved. I also used a signal follower and a very short trigger sound tied to lfo frequency to step through a series of values. Satisfactory movement, with some fiddling, but same issue with a lack of cyclical movement.
I’m a dunce when it comes to the formula device, but I wonder if there is some way to utilize this (or some other combination of meta devices) to replicate the utility of the stepper device in fx chains.
Love to hear your ingenious solutions if you’ve got em!
eternal gratitude if so!

A Signal-following Stereo Doofer
Similar to the iZotope Ozone Imager. This rudimentary Doofer allows for the stereo signal to be triggered at or above 5kHz (or other frequency ranges) with further adjustment of the the “HP Freq” knob. Dest Min/Max adjust for how much of the signal affects the Sensitivity. The lower the Sensitivity, the more ‘touchy’ the effect is, which really allows for an active stereo expansion. The initial setting is a nice upper-mid mastering setting - a lively, moving stereo spreader without affecting the low-end. Keeps panning activity exciting, yet less of an ‘on/off jarring’ feel.
