I was trying to convert the SGM soundfont into xrni or sfz so I could use them easier. Couldn’t get either of the sf2 to xrni converters to work, so I used sforzando to convert them to sfz, which generated files but loading them into renoise gave me a message saying each individual instrument was in the gigabytes

and when I loaded one it actually took that much space in ram and crashed the program if it was too much.

I’m on linux, anyone else have this problem?

I just want to share some of my thoughts and my story about Renoise and trackers in general. Been using them for so long and it’s so in the blood.

My journey with trackers started in '90/91 at the age of 14. First was, if I remember right, Soundtracker on Atari ST. I did Techno and Trance (Hard Trance) with that setup. Then I moved to Amiga 500 a couple of years later and it had the Protracker. I tried to use Octamed too, but it never worked properly for me for some unknown reason.

In 1996 I moved to the PC world and my first software was a Scream Tracker. It was so amazing to have 16(?) tracks on it. I remember it was like there were no limits anymore, and now I can do anything I want.
Then I found Fasttracker 2 and oh boy, that was another big leap forward in music making. The first time can used a MIDI keyboard with a tracker and a few years later I got some hardware synths in my arsenal to send MIDI to them. Fasttracker didn’t have VST’s, so all effect processing was done externally, on synths or external effect units.
Oh well, at one time I did have 11 hardware synths in my studio. It went a little bit overkill. (Nowadays all external gear I have, is just a 3-octave MIDI keyboard and an audio interface).

Then in the year 2002, I found this ultimate tracker called Renoise and I’ve been very happy with it since then. Using it with various VST synths and effects. I must say that Kontakt has changed a lot my music in general. It has its quirks, but it has the best libraries for orchestral compositions and guitars and basses for every kind of music.
I’ve never had to use any other DAWS than tracker for my music making. Though have tried Fruity Loops, Reason, and Cubase, but I just hate those pianorolls…

I like the way in trackers, you can input notes and other stuff just with a keyboard and you can use it without a mouse if you want. With pianorolls is all about clicking with the mouse those tiny little boxes. When watching on Youtube when someone is using a pianoroll, I always think how slow and awkward that look. Those boxes are never in the right place and then they move them around like they don’t know what they’re looking for… Seems so weird to me. I like to play everything live first with a keyboard (most times just a computer’s own keyboard) before putting notes to a Renoise sequencer. Then tweaks can be done there just with a keyboard.

And this whole pianoroll thing is really bugging me. In here forum just all the time someone is whining “Why doesn’t Renoise have a pianoroll, blah, blah…”
IMHO, when every single DAW out there has a pianoroll, then why not just use one of those instead? I just don’t get it… Seriously people…
Renoise is a tracker. Period.

Then there was this, I don’t know how it is in other countries, but here in Finland has been a mentality that music that has been done on a tracker, is not a “real” deal. Maybe it’s from the Amiga era or something, I often hear people saying that trackers are just for a chiptune and other “low-quality” stuff. Not for a “real” music.
There are so many times when I’ve been defending Renoise and telling them that you can do everything in Renoise than every other DAW.
But no, people are always belittling and dissing trackers here.
Like: " Are you STILL using Renoise?"
My answer is: “Yes of course I use. What else tho? I can do with it everything I want.”
I don’t know a single thing that I can achieve on any other DAW that Renoise can’t do.

In 1995 one of my tracks was played on the radio and my music was on a couple of compilations here in Finland. My artist name was “Moonraver” then (I didn’t know then that there was another one with the same name in Germany).
In the early 00’s I got one of my remixes on a label, my project then was called “Finsane”. There was another bloke involved in it too.
2017- 2021 I had my own production company and I made many works for different clients, including a couple of soundtracks (all the music and sound effects) for a theatre and some video work (commercials, short films, etc). I did all the audio work with Renoise.
Nowadays I make music and videos just for a hobby.

Btw, really hope to get those audio tracks to Renoise someday.
I mean where you can see the waveform next to a track. That would be so awesome! It would make things so much easier.

Well, I really don’t know the meaning of this post, but just wanted to share some of the old boomer’s thoughts from all these decades using trackers. Maybe I’m having some kind of nostalgic trip to memory lane going on… Time flies.

I love this Renoise community. I haven’t posted much here, but been reading and learning so lot from here in these years.

Anyone else use the pc keyboard to jam and record like it was a piano or something? I’ll adjust the velocity later in the editor, I do it with the drums too.

I like the idea of being able to fully navigate, and adjust stuff like delay, and everything manually.

What I did was do a calculation of beats per second times 3.69369. 60 x 3.69369. 1 oscillation per second = 1 Hz, so the 3.69369 number I used is 3.69369 Hz. This would equal [221.616] BPM. Usually, the original pure Frenchcore BPM would almost always be 220 BPM. The 221.616 BPM tempo is very unstable energy-feeling-wise; I got the idea from Nikola Tesla’s quote. “If you knew the magnificence of 369, you would have a key to the universe." And another quote he made. “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration." I’d suggest you guys on the forum give this tempo a try. If you want to get crazier, use 9.63963. Or another two other ones: 3.96396 or 6.39639.

when i hit esc to go into edit mode, it starts running really quick, like it recording live into the pattern, while putting a note stop like continually after the play cursor.
i just installled, no tools or anything, its default, thx

In application preferences, I can set keybinds to, for example, show/focus the sample editor (global->view->focus/show sample editor).

Can I invoke this from the lua API? I’m unable to find it in the docs.

Works fine with VST 2 version but the plugins’ internal midi learn feature does not work at all using the VST3 versions (tried several from V collection)

I know I went on about some of my life like a weirdo in other posts, but I think I figured out what’s wrong with the life I’m living, or at least what I know as the truth so far. I think my “family” are inter-dimensional time travelers who can mind-read. When I tell them about how I feel about my life, they automatically “assume” I’m hallucinating, and “people” know who I already am without even having knowledge of who they are. I don’t know if you call it the “devil,” but “people” who may be aliens have been revolving around my life, monitoring me. “People” mimic my old self too to make me regress in life, and they try to make me like them a little too much. Now, when I try to contact them, they ignore me completely and put up images of how I’d die, basically because my health has been hijacked, and the pictures and dates they posted relate 100%. Anyway, when I was about six or seven years old, the original grey brick game boy I used to play with automatically had a perfect backlit black and white screen at one point in the 90s. As a kid, I thought this was completely normal. But when I lost the game boy and a few years later found it, the backlight was gone and the game boy wouldn’t work anymore. Also, at one time I also stared into a static, unworking channel on the TV, and for some reason it showed a small part of the drive-thru scene of the movie The Fifth Element when I was six years old, and this was years before the movie came out, then the screen went back to static after the part of the scene ended. Also, there was a mandela-effect experience I had with the TV show Kenan & Kel. The episode where Kel was in the bagging contest seemed way more innocent in a way, but the thing about it is that I was in a dreamy state when I think about it now compared to how I felt back then while watching it. When I downloaded all the Kenan & Kel episodes in 2021, I came across the episode I was just mentioning, and I was like, I remember this… But the episode was much crazier and not so innocent, especially the ending. I was like, What the heck is this? I do not remember it being that way. The thing about it is that I’m naturally innocent and too intelligent, so they have to brainwash me into being stupid. If I’m using my smarts, they call me dumb; when I’m dumb, they call me smart. I could have changed the world for the better when they didn’t brainwash me into not paying attention in school. I came across a few pages of these textbooks about health and biology in class, and I could see some lies being put into them when I think about how misleading this “knowledge” is. The only thing that’s even worth a damn is language and math. Hey, but even the English language can be so extremely word-bending and intentionally punny, like aliens created it to mess with a human’s mind. Even my picture that was taken, which I do not remember, is of me as a toddler crying on Santa Claus’s lap; he must’ve inserted feelings into my being or images into my mind. The picture was put in the living room, which I saw when I was like 4 or 5 years old. I had an experience of which they can do, like that one time a very clear picture of Guy Fawke’s mask popped into my head, and my “friend” the next day changed his Facebook picture to a Guy Fawke’s mask. And what’s the term I saw in a physics book? Negative acceleration when a car is going backwards? That makes no sense unless it’s in conflict with the position of either the north or south poles. In programming, putting a negative value on a vehicle will make it go backwards. Is that a way to make me think this is a simulation? Well, now my eyes are sensitive to light. What’s going on here? There is even color symbolism with the p!nk color. Also, my “family” knows what actions I’ll take before it even happens; am I being mind-controlled? Hardcore Weed makes me easily controlled by others. And one time I walked to my “sister’s” room and looked at the mattress, expecting to find something underneath it. I lifted it up and found Playboy magazines at 10 years old; at that time, I had never done drugs. My mom once said, Where’s your Playboy? instead of the word Game Boy, like she knew what I was already doing. I even knew a code for Tetris without having previous knowledge of it. I pressed down A and B and held them down while I turned on the system, waited until the title screen, released the buttons, and it made the game play faster. This is some MK-Ultra crap, is it? It feels like if I hadn’t been brainwashed and terrorized when I was young, I wouldn’t have been a mind-controlled puppet. It feels like time-traveling is in the mix too. I’m pretty sure some people here in the forum know the truth, but it’s better to hide the plans than expose them, is that right? Click

Sorry for the noob question, but where can I find a list of commands to insert into the tracker, for example, to slow down time or jump to a certain pattern, I know they exist but I don’t know what they are called, so doing a search is difficult for me. If you can give me a little push at least to clarify the initial things, thanks in advance.

Maybe the best approach for parallel kind of routing would be to use the current instrument structure. The automation device could be also a generator placeholder, so at this position, the audio was generated. Similar as dragging the generator itself to the position.

Benefits:

• Already accessible thru LUA API, no breaking changes
• Redux wouldn’t be affected, since Redux has no automation device
• We could use the parallel chains in the instrument section for various routings
• The whole VSTi setup would be saveable and easily swappable, for example in multiple projects (e.g. setting up a guitar with proper distortion fx)
• Layering of generators would be possible
• Makes the instrument preset system much more attractive to use

Drawbacks:

• Effect routing is always bound to the instrument

Effort:

• Refactoring of the automation device
• Make midi / pattern input available in each chain of the instrument structure

If you have any ideas how to implement parallel containers from a technical perspective, please continue…

M1 Macbook Pro Sonoma - Renoise 3.4.3

When working in the sample keyzone editor, I noticed that I was not unable to “undo” deleting samples when focused on the keyzone editor. Attempting to do so yields a message at the bottom of the screen reading “Change PlaybackMode” was undone.

Continuing to hold cmd-z results in the “Nothing to Undo” message (with no prior actions being reversed), even when I have a long history of prior actions. Repressing cmd-z yields the same playbackmode message, with no samples being recovered. Making further changes (i.e. adding to the undo-queue) allows you undo those actions, but this list “stops” at where one has deleted samples in the keyzone editor.

This does not happen if you are on the keyzone tab but focused on the sample list (left hand sidebar). Deleting samples in the sample list and “undoing” behaves normally.

This is unfortunate because I have lost some good takes this way that I can’t recover! I use more caution now, but I don’t believe this is at all intended behavior.

I picked up an old unfinished track from a good few years back and did a new version.
Lyrics were written by my friend Dan McEvoy, the music and ‘singing’ by me. I kept the same simple format of the unfinished version, so there’s not a huge amount of variety…but I still like it.

The rendering of sample DSP into waveform is really slow. Track DSP as well.
Takes few seconds for short sample (168 values). Which slows down whole workflow.
Linux with Ryzen 5700G. No VSTs used, only native FX like distortion.

The problem with most recent version (3.4.3), checked 3.4.1 as well - same problem.

I don’t think this is by design, as these sampler FX are played in realtime.
Can you please fix it?

Hi all, first timer here in the Renoise forums. I just dived back into Renoise after a hiatus and just realized something that always bugged me: the grey bar that follows the little orange cursor when moving up and down the pattern editor.

I’m not sure if others have felt the same, but it makes it a lot harder to create patterns. I use the static grey bars to identify quarter notes. Because of the moving grey bar (and that orange one that appears wherever I stopped my last play through), it’s hard to immediately glance and identify a particular given beat because those extra colors act as distractions.

I assume these were added to be helpful (in identifying what row your cursor is in and in identifying where you last stopped the playback). However, I would love to be able to remove them, as that would make Renoise a game changer for me.

I tried looking in the GUI preference section and couldn’t find anything of relevance. Is there a way to turn these colors off, or is this sadly a feature request that I would simply have to hope for?

Hello!

I’m trying to use instrument automation to recreate Elektron style parameter locks with vsts set up as drum synths.

Currently I’m experimenting with Zebra, I have a patch set up with the XY performance parameters mapped to the instrument automation meta device.

The problem I’m facing is that the switch between one parameter value and the next is not instant and has a “shwoopy” effect for lack of a better term. Currently I’m controlling a filter cutoff and if I have two notes that have the same cutoff value, the first one slides into it during the beginning of the note and the second one comes out the way I actually wanted.

I’ve tried putting the parameter value changes in a different column and setting the delay of each column so that the parameters should theoretically change a little bit ahead of the actual note but to no avail. If I put the parameter change a step early it changes the tail end of the preceding note.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? I’m not the biggest fan of using static samples for percussion and I’m trying to keep myself in the box. I could just use Logic’s Ultrabeat to get a similar effect but programming drums in Renoise feels a million times better.

Hello

Is there a way to record a sider / knob in automation without midi controller or forcing right mouse button?

Today I made some funny experiment - Line input that goes to singal follower, which controls instrument plugin on second channel and you can move knobs like filter etc. using your own voice.

Is nice, because whole channel with line input / signal follower is muted at the end and the only you can hear is how knobs are moving and changing sound in realtime (filters, eq, detune etc.).

But there is no option to save anywhere renoise sliders movements. It can be done if I’m using MIDI, but not when they move using singal follower or other internal effect. Or maybe there is some possibility to record knob/slider parameter without MIDI or right mouse button interaction?
