4x4 switch matrix, ´hard cut´ issue solved, I guess
so i was playing around with this switch matrix idea I had from the modular world and stumbled across an unwanted noise when switching the receiver on a #send on a send track sending to another send track.
so I wrote taktik. he told me to get in here.
you can see in the file what I’m doing and I kind of made a track from the idea, (with compression and everything)
Maybe I little more explaining?
When sending a signal from a track ModMatrix4x4-0.3smoothGen.xrns (39.3 KB) with the #send is fine. You can automate the receiver as you will and no problem, no noise, pops n crackles. BUT when sending it again, from the send track a, to another send track, with the #send, and switching the receiver, then it gets unpleasant. No anything major, but enough for me to not want that, not in this particular project anyway.
So yeah, I did this instead, to get around it. You can see it on the master. It is essentially one hydra reseting four fully stopped LFO´s simultaneously while each of the four custom LFO´s are sending to four different send tracks gain. And then there are some other instruments that has nothing to do with the original idea but just thrown in there for fun.
So, it is, track 01 called DC to switch, sending to send track S01-04 and S01-04 sending to S05-08 called mod01-04.
Maybe I should post this in Renoise song also?
Oh yeah, and its 3.2 only Renoise effects bla… blah…a blalalha…a.alallbla

Changing BPM of pre-sliced breaks
Hi, basically I think I might be missing something really simple that would speed my workflow up a bit…
I’ve been using the awesome “200 Breakbeats Instruments” xrni pack by Ripley that’s floating about, and I think the way I am adapting the breaks to fit the BPM of my track might be a bit convoluted…
Basically my workflow is:
- load the xrni break instrument onto a track
- select thew first slice in the Samples panel and hit beatsync, then hit “t” to get the transpose/finetune values
- selecting all of the other slices and copying the transpose/finetune values over from the first slice to get them all to the same pitch.
Is there a quicker way of doing this? It seems a bit roundabout and I thought there might be something I’m missing! Now I’ve written it down it doesn’t seem like such a long process but I just thought I’d check!
Thanks in advance!

Missing In Docs: sample_modulation_sets[]:insert_device_at()
There seems to be a missing parameter in the API docs for:
sample_modulation_sets[]:insert_device_at (device_path , missing param ,index)
The docs say:
– Insert a new device at the given position. “device_path” must be one of
– renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[].available_devices.
.
.
renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:insert_device_at(device_path, index)
-> [returns new renoise.SampleModulationDevice object]
But in order to inset the device in a specific lane you need to put in an extra int so it becomes:
:insert_device_at(device_path, lane_index ,index)
Where lane_index is one of the following:
VOLUME = 1
PANNING = 2
PITCH = 3
CUTOFF = 4
RESONANCE = 5
Just Double checked here to make sure I didn’t have out of date docs but it looks to be the same:
github.com renoise/xrnx/blob/master/Documentation/Renoise.Song.API.lua#L2095- -- Reset all chain back to default initial state. Removing all devices too.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:init()
- -- Copy all devices from another SampleModulationSet object.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:copy_from(
- other renoise.SampleModulationSet object)
- -- Insert a new device at the given position. "device_path" must be one of
- -- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[].available_devices.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:insert_device_at(device_path, index)
- -> [returns new renoise.SampleModulationDevice object]
- -- Delete a device at the given index.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:delete_device_at(index)
- -- Access a single device by index.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:device(index)
- -> [renoise.SampleModulationDevice object]
- -- upgrade filter type to the latest version. Tries to find a somewhat matching
- -- filter in the new version, but things quite likely won't sound the same.
- renoise.song().instruments[].sample_modulation_sets[]:upgrade_filter_version()

Renoise mixer scale
Im not quite sure how to phrase this question.
But what kind of scale does the renoise mixer use?
Is there a way to set it to dbfs?

Is there a lua call to toggle "override window manager shortcuts"?
Hello everyone,
Just wondering if there’s a function in the API (or maybe even a key binding?) to do this, it would be really helpful.
Thanks!

Linux: still dropping notes on plugins playing chords
Renoise 3.2.1 x64 on Linux Mint 19.3 using JACK. Still getting dropped notes when the same track is playing several notes with a VST/DSSI/etc. plugin. Randomizing the note delays seems to “help” reduce the number of notes dropped, but still not a perfect workaround.

Modulation Sets
Hi,
I’ve made a few lanes of modulation sets on a sample - is it possible to control them in other ways than clicking them? Can they be automated or attached to a macro?
Thanks!

Some pre sales questions I wanted to ask and some advice on moving forward
Hi guys and gals,
So just a brief history I used Impulse Tracker back in the mid 90’s, was the beginning of my journey with composing music and by far the best experience of my mid to late teens. I had the pleasure of communicating with Jeffrey Lim a couple of times in those days.
Impulse Tracker opened up doors for me to the point of being one of the very few who took a PC to rave parties in Sydney and played live with Impulse Tracker. LOL… I will never forget those days.
That was about 20 years ago…Due to circumstances in those times, composing became a second hobby and soon was not something I could dedicate time to anymore.
Here I am 43 years old, 2 kids, beautiful wife, living the dream…
The dream of getting back in writing music has been haunting me for 20 years now and I feel I am now ready again.
So I initially thought something like Ableton was the go to product and not only did I buy a license for it which cost a pretty penny, I invested in an external soundcard a Native Instruments Komplete 6, an Akai MPK Mini as well.
I have not really invested too much time in Ableton at the moment, but my roots are really with Trackers, that is what I know and remember.
So I found Renoise, Schism Tracker as options for modern day tracking.
Sorry for the long winded intro, here are my questions.
-
When I play my Impuse Tracker original tracks they do not sound as good as playing them thru Schism Tracker, why is this ?
-
Is Renoise, really the best option for me, if I want to utilize my external Midi equipment like my MPK Mini as a Synth to play notes, or samples etc…etc… Is this even possible to configure it with Renoise ?
-
In personal or professional opinions is something like Renoise inferior, superior to software like Ableton when it comes to composing music, what are the pros and cons of each. The last thing I want to do is choose one then move onto the next.
-
Is it possible to load up sample banks other than sample files eg WAV files, any way to import Ableton sample packs into Renoise?
I think that’s about it for now… too many questions.
A big shout out to the developers of this software, just the fact that your keeping the tracking scene alive with software like this deserves a big pat on the back.
Mitch.

New Tool: (3.2) Drum Layers (July 2020)
New Alpha: Drum Layers
-
Note this version will always keep a minimum of three empty sample slots on any instrument that is chosen while it is open. Shouldn’t be a big deal but worth knowing.
-
Being an early alpha keep eye out for bugs. i did manage to crash renoise once when I had one of the envelopes detached in renoise and navigated elsewhere. Couldn’t track it down again but do report it here if you run into it so we can try and get a proper report to taktik.
Drum Layers
Designed to take drudgery out of layering drums or other samples.
Keyboard Shortcut: Drum Layers
Best place to start is with an empty instrument slot. Press Wav button on the leftmost slot and drag a sample into the sampler. You can now tweak with the other controls and navigate around the sampler. Repeat for slots 2 and 3.
Also:
- Each sample layer has its own modulation and fx lanes pre-routed
- You can Solo and Mute each layer. The tool uses specially named gainers in the fx lanes to do this.
Should be fairly self explanatory if you are familiar with the sampler functions. I’ll update more details later. More features planned too.

Renoise spectrum analyzer is AMAZING to improve your singing skills
Okay, can we agree that the Renoise spectrum is the most beautiful of its kind?
I’m starting to learn how to sing. It has been only two weeks and I already know/learned:
- My vocal range (tenor).
- Exactly at which note my chest voice breaks into head voice.
- Better breath support,
- Singing the exact note I want (placing the cursor first) and keeping it stable.
It has also helped me to start developing my timbre, I have gathered different acapellas I like as references and I noticed that my voice sounds kinda weak because I was lacking 2nd - 4th order harmonics, so using different techniques I’m learning to make them stand out. It’s really fun monitoring your mic, looking at the spectrum and watching your voice follow the acapella, I’ve hit notes I didn’t even thought possible.
- Don’t forget to set the block size to 8192!
- Remember A5 is actually A4.

Click individual note to hear?
Hi. I have been writing some chord harmonies and I was finding myself wondering if there is a way to somehow click on an individual note to hear what pitch it has? I can’t recall if this is a feature I may have used in the past, or if I’m just imagining things? I am aware that you can ctrl-click a note to select that instrument (very useful!) In googling for an answer to this question I also just learned that I can hit enter to hear the notes on a given line, which is also really useful, but I haven’t been able to find a way to hear each individual note.
If this is not a feature that exists, I’d really like to propose this as a future enhancement. When writing chord harmonies, I’m sometimes not sure which voice I’ve entered incorrectly. It would be amazingly convenient to be able to click (maybe alt-click?) an individual note to hear it. It would basically function the same as hitting Enter to hear the current line, but only play the clicked note. (Actually, the same behaviour could be triggered by something like ctrl+enter for a keyboard-driven version of the input.)
Thanks
