Is someone using Traktor controllers with Renoise? And my other beginner questions

Renoise Forum - September 13, 2020 - 16:37

Hello fellow kids!
During the last two weeks I bought a Traktor F1, an X1 and a Z1 controller for my DJing.

I’m just getting into Renoise currently. Since I’m new to the production side of things for now my main focus is on creating remix set loops for Traktor (possibly stems too). I feel like that a goal that will lead to actual results instead of tons of unfinished “songs” and being overwhelmed by the learning curve. (I’m focusing on the genres of 80s electronic (library) music, and musically-not-boring “synthwave”. Recently discovering @mitch_murder’s completely Renoise-based work (and writing him on SoundCloud) really spurred my will to get creative in and with those genres. Renoise immediately, finally, looked like a tool I could actually like to use. So far it didn’t disappoint.)

So I was wondering whether those controllers could also be useful for working with Renoise. I don’t have any midi maps yet and only tried some extremely simple stuff. In fact I only started looking into the topic of setting up controllers yesterday, because I’m also trying to decide whether a really simple master keyboard (M-Audio Mini32 Mk3, #1 choice, laptop-sized vs. Akai MPK Mini Mk2, a bit larger but has some knobs and pads) could be enough, since I should be able to repurpose my three Traktor controllers, at least for now. (I’m currently using an inherited Behringer UMX40 keyboard, but it’s wayyy too big, the keys are loud(!), and the knobs are all sticky and yucky.)

I was very intrigued by a user’s mention of controlling the pattern sequencer with the X1. Unfortunately that post is 10 years old. @empolo, if you’re still here please raise your hand. I haven’t looked in-depth into the pattern sequencer yet, so it still is a bit of a mystery to me. Sounds like this setup might also possibly serve in a live situation? Other than that do people even use external controllers (except keyboards) with Renoise? And what for, maybe to record some automations?

In short, if someone has any midi maps to share for those controllers and if/how you use them with Renoise that could be very helpful for me (and hopefully others too). Also I’d appreciate some tips for my general scenario and choice of minimal master keyboard controller.

Be well, all of you. Thank you.

Remotely accessible repl?

Renoise Forum - September 12, 2020 - 20:53

I would like to be able to access a Renoise Lua repl from outside of Renoise (whether over TCP, a unix domain socket, or through some external text-only client running in a terminal), with the ultimate goal of using the repl to feed Renoise chunks of Lua code from inside Emacs and read responses back from Renoise.

I know it’s possible for Renoise to load and run Lua scripts that were edited in an external editor, but this requires manual interaction with the Renoise Scripting Editor that make me take round-trips from Emacs in to Renoise’s Scripting Editor and back, which slows down my development workflow, and in any event does not allow me to get Renoise’s responses back in to Emacs.

I have tried using Renoise’s remote debugging facilities, which kind of works, but the debugger freezes Renoise when it’s used, which prevents the interaction with Renoise that I find necessary for developing my script.

I have also tried the jeejah repl, but I am unable to get Renoise to allow me to interact with it while the repl is running either, as it just keeps asking me whether I want to interrupt the script. Besides, I’m not even sure jeejah works at all as a repl, since I didn’t even get far enough to bother trying to connect Emacs to it, which is the only way to test if it works.

Does anyone know of another working alternative or whether this is possible to do in Renoise at all?

Renoise V3.2.2 Caught an unhandled fatal exception (Thread: GUI)

Renoise Forum - September 12, 2020 - 14:07

After I ran a script which started a jeejah repl in the foreground, I clicked on the Renoise window and Renoise asked me if I wanted to interrupt the script, which I did. About a second later, without any further interaction on my part, it crashed with a message saying: “A fatal error or crash occurred (unhandled exception in thread: GUI).”

A full log can be seen here.

Problem API: open_url() fails in Mac Catalina?

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 23:55

On Mac OS X “Catalina” 10.15.6 (19G2021), it seems that renoise.app():open_url (url) is not able to open the file.

I have tried to open an HTML file or TXT file and it is not able to open it in Google Chrome (default internet browser). The url string is correct and the file exists.

Can anyone test it on their OS?

With the latest MAC updates is it possible that the open_url() API function will not work correctly?

Just executing the function does nothing. I have used the same code for Windows 10 and it works perfectly. I think it will work on Linux too.

Ignore Renoise Midi In when in Record Mode

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 23:31

I’m sending Midi Data from Ableton to Renoise via the Renoise Midi-IN on different Midi Channels to different Instruments in Renoise, but it’s really bothersome that as soon as you go into record mode all the Midi Data coming into Renoise Midi-In is dumped into the Tracker Grid.

Would really like a option to make that not happen, so I can trigger Midi clips in Ableton and have them play Instruments in Renoise, but still can work in the Renoise Grid in record mode.

update:
I’ve set all 4 Midi Master Keyboard Inputs to none, so I assumed that wouldn’t happen, since you can actually set the Master Keyboard to “Renoise Midi-In”, which I would assume would then make Renoise behave the way it always does… erm… so maybe a bug?

Is Renoise compensating External Midi Clock as well?

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 21:39

This isn’t explicitly stated in the menu, but I was quit suprised that Renoise is latency adjusting the Midi Clock if you choose to slave Renoise to an extern midi clock.

there’s another delay setting, but I’ve tried putting some lookahead comps into the project an it still doesn’t seem that out of sync.

anybody else noticed that?

Your history as a musician

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 20:13

When have you started creating music and why?
How did you compose your music and what style do you prefer?

My story:
I the year 1991 my best friend introduced a program called Soundtracker to me at the age of 12. I was addicted to electronic music since the age of 4, and I was always a creative mind, so I started playing around with sounds on Soundtracker. Soundtracker was the first known tracker on the Amiga 500, which was the best computer back then. That was the time when Commodore, the manufactorer of C16, C64 and Amiga, was really big before it disappeared and was being replaced by PC. After a whle there was a successor of Soundtracker called Noisetracker, and shortly after that another successor appeared, called Protracker. That was my DAW for years until 1997. And it wasn’t bad, I almost signed a contract with A&R FAX Records at the age of 14 and got invited in their studio, but it never happened because I wasn’t persistend enough for getting this contract. I thought the lack of sound quality would always be there as long as I create music on Amiga, otherwise I would have had signed for sure. By the way, the music I made back then was primarely Techno. Meanwhile I tried Cubase and using Hardware gear in a musician’s workshop on Atari ST, but that was absolutely not the way I would like to create music. It’s way too awkward working with it. So in 1997 I finally switched to PC, because Commodore wasn’t anymore and I didn’t want to continue creating music in a limited sound quality with only 4 tracks. Luckily there was a successor on PC called Fasttracker, which was my DAW for exactly 6 weeks. It was exactly the same like Protracker on Amiga, but without the limitation of 4 tracks. Suddenly even a single instrument took much more memory space than a whole song made with Protracker. But finally I was able to work with the number of tracks I needed. The reason why I only worked about 6 weeks with Fasttracker was because my PC only worked for 6 weeks, then one part after another fell apart, nothing worked right anymore, so I gave up and didn’t want to be a PC user anymore. I didn’t like PCs anyway, I was a Commodore user. I was that frustrated when it comes to my PC, that I completely stopped creating music.I couldn’t imagine going back to Protracker with only 4 tracks and a limited sound quality. 11 years later in the year 2008 my relationship to my girl back then has ended and I needed something for distraction, so a friend of mine introduced Skaletracker to me, which was an unfinished freeware Fasttracker clone, so I started creating something with it. Time went by and I wanted to get better in every aspect, but Skaletracker had too many limitations. You couldn’t use VSTs and many functions weren’t working, because Skaletracker was unfinished. Luckily at this point Renoise was recommended to me, that was in the year 2011 (In the thread “How did you meet Renoise?” I wrote 2012, but I guess that’s wrong, because I’ve found some tracks on my hard disk from 2011 which obviously were made in 2011 with Renoise). Since then I’m a happy Renoise user and finally everything I’ve always wanted is there. Now I can use VSTs, I can use as many tracks as I need and I can drop a beat as fast as before, because Renoise is a tracker with advanced possibilities. And a tracker is much more intuitive than anything else, it’s very easy to handle. But not only the DAW changed, my music style, too. Since 10 years I prefer creating Elektro and since round about one year I also create Synthwave. Thanks to Renoise (yes, and a little bit to my skills, too) I even have got an official release on a french Elektro label called Ukonx Recordings. And I’m absolutely not a pro! There’s absolutely not enough time to even think about becoming more professional. From 2013 until 2018 I also had to stop creating music because there was no time (self-employment isn’t easy). Music is just a hobby and will ever be, but a big one.

So that’s my story. What about you?

A bit of sound design with Renoise

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 13:16

Hi, all. This is my first post on forum.

I am an amateur sound designer from Moscow.

As well I am a professional DevOps Engineer and sounds is just my hobby.
I was familiar with old trackers (Scream, Fast and Impulse) so Renoise fits me comepletely.

This thing I made then tested a licensed Renoise 3.2.2 (have using a sample from distribution pack).

Used soft:
Renoise 3.2.2
Slate Digital FG-MU multiband compressor
Infected Mushroom Wider

I hope you will enjoy it.

Unable to use Rubberband or time stretch a sample

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 04:03

Hi There,

I am new to Renoise, but not to music on computers…

I am having a tricky time with stretching a sample. Rubberband, though installed is not working. So I follow the directions and go to Homebrew, but my MAC terminal app won’t allow the script to run. Additionally, when I try to time stretch from the other option available, I get an error message talking about issues with installation or that what I am trying to do is too much for my system (which is not the case)…

Any ideas as to what is going on/ what I can do?

Thanks so much

Renoise Automation questions

Renoise Forum - September 11, 2020 - 03:35

I was thinking about getting back into Renoise from Buzz tracker just for a change in workflow, but I can’t see living without 2 things that last I checked Renoise didn’t have:

  1. Send midi note value to VST effect (assuming effect can do anything with it)

  2. 16 bit precision (numbers up to 32767, don’t know the actual name) for VST parameter automation. Not internally for curves, but precise input values.

Is there a “meta” device or something that I may be missing out on that accomplishes these things? Yeah I realize I’m a dork for being such a stickler about these things, but I really love the FT2 style of Renoise!

Show contents of all sub folders in Disk Browser (like Bitwig does)

Renoise Forum - September 10, 2020 - 12:52

I’d add the behavior of browser to match like bitwig in the following aspect:
when you select one folder, in the bottom pane you can see every file within that folder and all subfolders altogether. Here are some pictures:

This would be ideal way to browse through multiple multi-sampled drum kit libraries to find the ‘perfect’ snare - just an example… I do not have to go manually thru like 4 subfolders in order to get snare, and repeat same for next kit and for next and so on…

would this be a huge effort to implement or not?
Thank you @taktik

and ability to modify gui/theme more in-depth than possible right now. This would be so awesome - but not something that we cannot go on without
